Abstract:CeO2 hollow nanospheres were synthesized by a low-cost and environmentally benign one-pot hydrothermal route. Templates, surfactants, or other auxiliaries were not used in the route. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements were used to characterize the products. The average diameter of hollow spheres, with shells of approximately 30 nm, was about 300 nm. The formation of these hollow spheres involved a transformation from Ce(OH)CO3 solid spheres to CeO2 hollow nanospheres. The CeO2 hollow nanospheres exhibited a higher catalytic activity on CO oxidation than CeO2 nano-octahedrons.

Abstract:Mono-dispersed CeO2 hollow nanospheres with the size in the 50–200nm range were fabricated at room temperature by a facile etching approach based on the redox reaction between CeO2 solid nanospheres of certain size (as self-template) and FeSO4 (as etching agent). The internal diameter of the CeO2 hollow nanostructure gradually increases with extending reaction time. The obtained CeO2 materials are morphologically uniform, with well-defined hollow structure and large surface area of 61m2/g (the solid counterpart is 18m2/g). A redox mechanism was proposed to explain the evolution of CeO2 hollow nanospheres from the solid precursors. The present methodology is thought to be versatile for preparing hollow nanostructures of other oxides.

Abstract:Herein, SiO2@CeO2 composite microspheres were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal assisted layer-by-layer self-assembly method employing colloid SiO2 as the template, which was fabricated by a typical Stöber method. Monodispersed CeO2 hollow spheres with a narrow size distribution were achieved after etching colloid SiO2 templates through NaOH. The resultant samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier translation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isothermal. Specifically, the shell thickness and the mesoporous structure of the hollow sphere can be easily controlled by changing the concentration of cerium source.

Abstract:Novel single-crystalline-like CeO2 hollow nanocubes were synthesized through a solvothermal method using peroxyacetic acid (PAA) as the oxidant in the absence of any templates. The structure and morphology of CeO2 hollow nanocubes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The hollow nanocubes have an average edge length of 120 nm and shell thickness of 30 nm. TEM analyses demonstrate the formation of CeO2 hollow nanocubes is ascribed to the combination of oriented attachment and Ostwald ripening. At the beginning, a well-defined cube-like geometrical structure is formed through oriented attachment of small nanocrystallites. Then, solid evacuation in the central part via Ostwald ripening leads to single-crystalline-like hollow nanocubes. It was found that both peroxide (CH3COOOH or H2O2) and solution acidity are critical factors in determining the final morphology of the products. Compared to bulky CeO2 powders, the prepared CeO2 hollow nanocubes exhibited a higher catalytic activity toward CO oxidation.

Abstract:Cubic-like CeO2 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized through an improved-toluene solvothermal process using hexadecylamine (HAD) as a capping agent and CeCl3·7H2O as a precursor at 180°C for 24h. These nanocubes are about 10nm in size, and have a tendency to assemble into 2D superstructure. The obtained samples were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the water content, the concentration of ligand and kinds of aliphatic amine played important roles in the formation of the novel morphology. A possible formation mechanism was proposed based on the controlling reaction parameters. The electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of the as-synthesized samples exhibited the size/shape-dependent properties and potential applications.

Abstract:The almost monodisperse three dimensional (3D) porous CeO2 hollow nanospheres with a diameter of about 200–500 nm and rough surface have been synthesized by a facile template-free hydrothermal route. It was found that each hollow spherical nanostructure is composed of numerous nubbly nano-particles with several decade nanometers in diameter as the building blocks, which are randomly assembled with lower density to form a 3D porous structure. Many characterization means have been employed to study the CeO2 hollow nanospheres, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and ultraviolet–visible spectrum. The 3D CeO2 hollow nanospheres own a cubic fluorite structure and many Ce3+ ions and oxygen vacancies exist in their surface. The morphology structure of samples, size of building blocks, and the oxygen vacancies may be the reason for the red-shifted in band gap of the 3D CeO2 hollow nanospheres.

Abstract:Submicrometer-sized hollow Eu2O3 spheres with a shell thickness of about 75 nm and inner diameter about 690 nm have been synthesized through a sol–gel method using PS/PE microspheres as templates. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy have been used for the characterization of the obtained hollow Eu2O3 spheres. The PL peak is obviously broadened compared with that of bulk Eu2O3. The mechanism of the formation of the hollow Eu2O3 spheres was discussed.

Abstract:Nano-crystalline particles of CeO2 have been synthesized via a low temperature hydrothermal synthesis process. Two types of precursors were studied—cerium hydroxide and ceria acetate. The precursors were adjusted to a basic (pH 10) and acidic (pH 4) medium before hydrothermal treatment at various durations of 6, 12, 18, and 24h at 250°C using a Teflon-lined hydrothermal bomb. The synthesized samples were characterized using DTA/TGA, XRD and TEM. Based on the characterization results, both precursor systems produced crystalline ceria nano-particles after 6h of hydrothermal synthesis at 250°C. The average crystallite sizes were 6 and 15nm for the hydroxide and acetate system, respectively. The acetate precursor system appeared to produce better particles in terms of crystallinity and morphology. Based on the DTA/TGA analysis, hydrothermal synthesis had been effective in reducing the amount of intermediate products. With increasing hydrothermal treatment duration of up to 24h, the samples did not exhibit a remarkable improvement in properties. The synthesized nano-particles were subsequently heat treated at 500 and 1000°C for 2h. After the heat treatment, enhanced crystallinity and growth in crystallite size was observed, but particles appeared more agglomerated.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.
Mesoporous-shelled CeO2 hollow nanospheres synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal route and their catalytic performance

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodisperse CeO2 mesoporous hollow nanospheres composed of ceria nanocrystals were synthesized via a template-free and surfactant-assisted benign hydrothermal route. On the basis of a time-dependent experiment, the precipitation–dissolution–renucleation–assembly and Ostwald ripening processes mechanism is proposed for the formation of the CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres. Poly(vinyl-pyrrolidone) (PVP) was applied as a surfactant to facilitate the reassembly of the CeO2 nanoparticles and the formation of the mesoporous shell of the hollow nanospheres. By increasing the amount of PVP, the mesoporous shell of the hollow spheres could be fabricated and became more apparent. Meanwhile, altering the amounts of H2O2 could control the size of the primary nanocrystals via affecting the nucleation/growth process of them, which is another key factor in the formation of the hollow structure and the uniform, monodispersed nanoparticles. The catalytic test results show that the as-obtained CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres exhibited desirable CO catalytic properties. The synthesized Au–CeO2 nanospheres demonstrate a higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than pure ceria nanospheres.

Abstract:Ceria materials with sphere, rod, and prism morphologies were synthesized via the hydrolysis of solutions containing Ce(NO3)3 and urea under hydrothermal conditions. By carefully adjusting the synthesis conditions (salt concentration, temperature and synthesis time), spheres with a diameter of about 200 nm, rods of about 6 nm in width and 60 nm in length and prisms with an edge length of about 600 nm were synthesized. XRD and TEM indicate that the grain size of these samples is in the range of 7–10 nm after calcination at 450 °C. These ceria materials exhibit a higher catalytic activity in the oxidation of CO than conventionally prepared CeO2.
Preparation of CeO2 Nanocrystals by Solvothermal Routes

Abstract:CeO2 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a simple alcohol-water solvothermal method using PVP as a capping agent and Ce(NO3)3·6H2O as a precursor.The shape and size of the products could be effectively tuned by controlling the reaction conditions,such as reaction time and the molar ratio of Ce3+to PVP.X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the phase of the particles was CeO2 of cubic system,and their structures and size were characterized by SEM and TEM.The results of photoluminescence(PL) spectra showed that the fluorescence peak corresponds to different luminescence centers,and the fluorescence of Eu3+∶CeO2 nanomaterials have excellent photoluminescence.

Abstract:CeO2 hollow microspheres were prepared through a facile method by using yeast cells as bio-templates. The yeast provided a solid frame for the deposition of cerium hydroxide to form the hybrid Ce(OH)3@yeast precursor. The resulting CeO2 hollow microspheres were obtained by calcining the precursor. The products were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption/desorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) and H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR). It was found that the products fully retained the morphology of the yeast cells and the size of the hollow microspheres was about 1.5–2 μm. The catalytic test results showed that the as-obtained hollow CeO2 microspheres possessed a higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than the commercial CeO2, which attributed to their higher surface area, hollow structure and superior reducibility. This study provided a promising route for the preparation of a variety of other inorganic hollow microspheres.

Abstract:Single-crystalline and uniform nanopolyhedra, nanorods, and nanocubes of cubic CeO2 were selectively prepared by a hydrothermal method at temperatures in the range of 100-180 degrees C under different NaOH concentrations, using Ce(NO3)3 as the cerium source. According to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, they have different exposed crystal planes: {111} and {100} for polyhedra, {110} and {100} for rods, and {100} for cubes. During the synthesis, the formation of hexagonal Ce(OH)3 intermediate species and their transformation into CeO2 at elevated temperature, together with the base concentration, have been demonstrated as the key factors responsible for the shape evolution. Oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurements at 400 degrees C revealed that the oxygen storage takes place both at the surface and in the bulk for the as-obtained CeO2 nanorods and nanocubes, but is restricted at the surface for the nanopolyhedra just like the bulk one, because the {100}/{110}-dominated surface structures are more reactive for CO oxidation than the {111}-dominated one. This result suggests that high OSC materials might be designed and obtained by shape-selective synthetic strategy.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) possesses a distinctive redox property due to a reversible conversion to its nonstoichiometric oxide and has been considered as a promising catalyst in the oxidative coupling of methane. Since a heterogeneously catalytic process usually takes place only on the surface of catalysts, it is reasonably expected that the performance of a catalyst, such as CeO2, highly relies on its size- and shape-dependent surface structure. We report our recent progress in achieving exclusive crystal facet-terminated CeO2 nanocrystals using a shape-controlled synthesis protocol in a one-pot colloidal system. We modified a two-phase solvothermal approach to fabricate cubic and truncated octahedral CeO2 nanocrystals with a size-control. During the two-phase solvothermal process, we propose that the Ce-precursors transfer from the aqueous layer to the interface of the organic phase, promoted by the capping ligands (as known as phase-transfer catalysts), for the oxidation and nucleation, and subsequently form CeO2 nanocrystals in the organic layer. As different capping ligands favor binding on diverse crystal facets, tuning the composition of the capping ligand with a precise control could generate nanocrystals that are dominated by a single type of facets with a relatively narrow size distribution.

Abstract:Solid-state reactions have the potential for direct preparation of ceramic powders and offer a low-temperature and low-cost alternative to conventional techniques for production of oxide powders. This paper describes a simple and effective mechanochemical method based on solid-state reactions during ball milling for synthesis of nanoscaled ceria (CeO2) particles. By using an organic base instead of an inorganic base, metal-ion-free nanoscaled CeO2 can also be made. The effects of annealing temperature on particle sizes and lattice strain are investigated. The results show that the average particle sizes of the particles increases and the average crystal lattice distortion decreases with the annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy examinations demonstrate that the CeO2 particles synthesised by this method are near-spherical shaped.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse flowerlike CeO2 microspheres were synthesized via a simultaneous polymerization-precipitate reaction, metamorphic reconstruction, and mineralization under hydrothermal condition as well as subsequent calcination. The obtained CeO2 microsphere consists of 20-30 nm thick nanosheets as petals. It has an open three-dimensional (3D) porous and hollow structure and possesses high surface area, large pore volume, and marked hydrothermal stability. It can be doped easily after synthesis, and the initial 3D texture is maintained. The controlling factors and a possible formation mechanism are discussed in detail. This novel material can be used as a support for catalysts with various purposes. With CuO loaded on flowerlike CeO2, the catalytic activities and hydrothermal stability of Cu/CeO2 for ethanol stream reforming were examined. At 300 degrees C, the H-2 selectivity reached a maximum value of 74.9 mol %, while CO was not detected within the precision of the gas chromatogram. It produced a hydrogen-rich gas mixture in the wide temperature range (300-500 degrees C) and showed excellent hydrothermal stability at high temperature (550 degrees C), which is a good choice for ethanol processors for hydrogen fuel cell applications.

Abstract:CeO2 ultrafine particles were prepared by solid‐state reactions at room temperature. These particles were found to have very fine particle sizes (∼3 nm) with a fluorite structure (a= 5.42 Å). BET measurements showed that the surface area of the particles was 96.2 m2/g. The use of two different precursors was found to affect the size of the CeO2 particles. We discuss the effect of calcination at different temperatures on the morphology, size, and BET surface area of CeO2 particles. A salt byproduct coating prevented agglomeration of the CeO2 particles.
