Abstract:CeO2 hollow nanospheres were synthesized by a low-cost and environmentally benign one-pot hydrothermal route. Templates, surfactants, or other auxiliaries were not used in the route. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements were used to characterize the products. The average diameter of hollow spheres, with shells of approximately 30 nm, was about 300 nm. The formation of these hollow spheres involved a transformation from Ce(OH)CO3 solid spheres to CeO2 hollow nanospheres. The CeO2 hollow nanospheres exhibited a higher catalytic activity on CO oxidation than CeO2 nano-octahedrons.

Abstract:Novel single-crystalline-like CeO2 hollow nanocubes were synthesized through a solvothermal method using peroxyacetic acid (PAA) as the oxidant in the absence of any templates. The structure and morphology of CeO2 hollow nanocubes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The hollow nanocubes have an average edge length of 120 nm and shell thickness of 30 nm. TEM analyses demonstrate the formation of CeO2 hollow nanocubes is ascribed to the combination of oriented attachment and Ostwald ripening. At the beginning, a well-defined cube-like geometrical structure is formed through oriented attachment of small nanocrystallites. Then, solid evacuation in the central part via Ostwald ripening leads to single-crystalline-like hollow nanocubes. It was found that both peroxide (CH3COOOH or H2O2) and solution acidity are critical factors in determining the final morphology of the products. Compared to bulky CeO2 powders, the prepared CeO2 hollow nanocubes exhibited a higher catalytic activity toward CO oxidation.

Abstract:Mono-dispersed CeO2 hollow nanospheres with the size in the 50–200nm range were fabricated at room temperature by a facile etching approach based on the redox reaction between CeO2 solid nanospheres of certain size (as self-template) and FeSO4 (as etching agent). The internal diameter of the CeO2 hollow nanostructure gradually increases with extending reaction time. The obtained CeO2 materials are morphologically uniform, with well-defined hollow structure and large surface area of 61m2/g (the solid counterpart is 18m2/g). A redox mechanism was proposed to explain the evolution of CeO2 hollow nanospheres from the solid precursors. The present methodology is thought to be versatile for preparing hollow nanostructures of other oxides.
Facile Synthesis of Well-Defined CeO2 Hollow Spheres with a Tunable Pore Structure

Abstract:Herein, SiO2@CeO2 composite microspheres were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal assisted layer-by-layer self-assembly method employing colloid SiO2 as the template, which was fabricated by a typical Stöber method. Monodispersed CeO2 hollow spheres with a narrow size distribution were achieved after etching colloid SiO2 templates through NaOH. The resultant samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier translation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isothermal. Specifically, the shell thickness and the mesoporous structure of the hollow sphere can be easily controlled by changing the concentration of cerium source.

Abstract:The almost monodisperse three dimensional (3D) porous CeO2 hollow nanospheres with a diameter of about 200–500 nm and rough surface have been synthesized by a facile template-free hydrothermal route. It was found that each hollow spherical nanostructure is composed of numerous nubbly nano-particles with several decade nanometers in diameter as the building blocks, which are randomly assembled with lower density to form a 3D porous structure. Many characterization means have been employed to study the CeO2 hollow nanospheres, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and ultraviolet–visible spectrum. The 3D CeO2 hollow nanospheres own a cubic fluorite structure and many Ce3+ ions and oxygen vacancies exist in their surface. The morphology structure of samples, size of building blocks, and the oxygen vacancies may be the reason for the red-shifted in band gap of the 3D CeO2 hollow nanospheres.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.

Abstract:Nano-crystalline particles of CeO2 have been synthesized via a low temperature hydrothermal synthesis process. Two types of precursors were studied—cerium hydroxide and ceria acetate. The precursors were adjusted to a basic (pH 10) and acidic (pH 4) medium before hydrothermal treatment at various durations of 6, 12, 18, and 24h at 250°C using a Teflon-lined hydrothermal bomb. The synthesized samples were characterized using DTA/TGA, XRD and TEM. Based on the characterization results, both precursor systems produced crystalline ceria nano-particles after 6h of hydrothermal synthesis at 250°C. The average crystallite sizes were 6 and 15nm for the hydroxide and acetate system, respectively. The acetate precursor system appeared to produce better particles in terms of crystallinity and morphology. Based on the DTA/TGA analysis, hydrothermal synthesis had been effective in reducing the amount of intermediate products. With increasing hydrothermal treatment duration of up to 24h, the samples did not exhibit a remarkable improvement in properties. The synthesized nano-particles were subsequently heat treated at 500 and 1000°C for 2h. After the heat treatment, enhanced crystallinity and growth in crystallite size was observed, but particles appeared more agglomerated.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodisperse CeO2 mesoporous hollow nanospheres composed of ceria nanocrystals were synthesized via a template-free and surfactant-assisted benign hydrothermal route. On the basis of a time-dependent experiment, the precipitation–dissolution–renucleation–assembly and Ostwald ripening processes mechanism is proposed for the formation of the CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres. Poly(vinyl-pyrrolidone) (PVP) was applied as a surfactant to facilitate the reassembly of the CeO2 nanoparticles and the formation of the mesoporous shell of the hollow nanospheres. By increasing the amount of PVP, the mesoporous shell of the hollow spheres could be fabricated and became more apparent. Meanwhile, altering the amounts of H2O2 could control the size of the primary nanocrystals via affecting the nucleation/growth process of them, which is another key factor in the formation of the hollow structure and the uniform, monodispersed nanoparticles. The catalytic test results show that the as-obtained CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres exhibited desirable CO catalytic properties. The synthesized Au–CeO2 nanospheres demonstrate a higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than pure ceria nanospheres.

Mesoscale organization of nearly monodisperse flowerlike ceria microspheres.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse flowerlike CeO2 microspheres were synthesized via a simultaneous polymerization-precipitate reaction, metamorphic reconstruction, and mineralization under hydrothermal condition as well as subsequent calcination. The obtained CeO2 microsphere consists of 20-30 nm thick nanosheets as petals. It has an open three-dimensional (3D) porous and hollow structure and possesses high surface area, large pore volume, and marked hydrothermal stability. It can be doped easily after synthesis, and the initial 3D texture is maintained. The controlling factors and a possible formation mechanism are discussed in detail. This novel material can be used as a support for catalysts with various purposes. With CuO loaded on flowerlike CeO2, the catalytic activities and hydrothermal stability of Cu/CeO2 for ethanol stream reforming were examined. At 300 degrees C, the H-2 selectivity reached a maximum value of 74.9 mol %, while CO was not detected within the precision of the gas chromatogram. It produced a hydrogen-rich gas mixture in the wide temperature range (300-500 degrees C) and showed excellent hydrothermal stability at high temperature (550 degrees C), which is a good choice for ethanol processors for hydrogen fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Solid-state reactions have the potential for direct preparation of ceramic powders and offer a low-temperature and low-cost alternative to conventional techniques for production of oxide powders. This paper describes a simple and effective mechanochemical method based on solid-state reactions during ball milling for synthesis of nanoscaled ceria (CeO2) particles. By using an organic base instead of an inorganic base, metal-ion-free nanoscaled CeO2 can also be made. The effects of annealing temperature on particle sizes and lattice strain are investigated. The results show that the average particle sizes of the particles increases and the average crystal lattice distortion decreases with the annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy examinations demonstrate that the CeO2 particles synthesised by this method are near-spherical shaped.

Abstract:Single-crystalline and uniform nanopolyhedra, nanorods, and nanocubes of cubic CeO2 were selectively prepared by a hydrothermal method at temperatures in the range of 100-180 degrees C under different NaOH concentrations, using Ce(NO3)3 as the cerium source. According to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, they have different exposed crystal planes: {111} and {100} for polyhedra, {110} and {100} for rods, and {100} for cubes. During the synthesis, the formation of hexagonal Ce(OH)3 intermediate species and their transformation into CeO2 at elevated temperature, together with the base concentration, have been demonstrated as the key factors responsible for the shape evolution. Oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurements at 400 degrees C revealed that the oxygen storage takes place both at the surface and in the bulk for the as-obtained CeO2 nanorods and nanocubes, but is restricted at the surface for the nanopolyhedra just like the bulk one, because the {100}/{110}-dominated surface structures are more reactive for CO oxidation than the {111}-dominated one. This result suggests that high OSC materials might be designed and obtained by shape-selective synthetic strategy.
Study of the Preparation and Properties of CeO2single/multiwall Hollow Microspheres

Abstract:Novel slight yellow CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres were synthesized by the hydrothermal method without any surfactant and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and x-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The results showed that the products were CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres, the shells of which were composed of CeO2nanoparticles with a mean size of 70 nm. The effect of the preparation conditions, the reaction temperature, the reaction time, and the molar ratios of urea to Ce(NO3)3·6H2O on the morphology of the products, was investigated. The optimal preparation conditions are determined as follows: the reaction temperature of 230 °C, the reaction time of 6 to 10 h, and the molar ratios of urea to Ce(NO3)3·6H2O of 3:1 to 6:1. The formation mechanism of CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres was proposed. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) diffuse reflectance spectra of the samples were measured. The results showed that the absorption edges of the samples were red-shifted compared with that of bulk CeO2, and that the red-shift of the absorption edges and the yellow of the samples enhanced with increasing the yield of CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres. The catalytic activity and the recycling performance of the sample on CO oxidation were tested and theT100%(the temperature at which CO 100% conversion) was 230 °C in the first run and decreased by 270 and 205 °C compared with that of bulk CeO2and CeO2nanocrystal, respectively.

Abstract:This article reports a novel preparation of nearly monodisperse spherical aggregates of CeO2 nanocrystals by using ionic liquid (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, C(16)MimBr) as both template and solvent. The products were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and N-2 adsorption-desorption methods. The spherical aggregates, with average diameter of 100 - 150 nm, are composed of ca. 3.5 nm CeO2 nanocrystals as building units, giving rise to three-dimensional (313) open porous structures with high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 119 m(2).g(-1). Mesoporous CeO2 with surface area up to 227 m(2).g(-1) was prepared by simply tuning the amount of the ionic liquids. Loaded with 5 wt% CuO, both the spherical aggregates and the mesoporous CeO2 exhibit high catalytic activities for CO conversion with 100% conversion rates at low temperature of 150 degrees C, suggesting potential applications in preferential oxidation (PROX) and water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). This sustainable and facile method may be extended to the preparation of other metal oxide nanoarchitectures and provides guidance for structure-controlled synthesis.

Abstract:CeO2 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method at different temperatures, using Ce(NO3)3 · 6H2O as the cerium source and CO(NH2)2 as the precipitant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and magnetization measurements were used to characterize the samples. The results show that with the increase in synthesis temperatures, the crystallite size increases and the dislocation density decreases. XPS and Raman spectra reflect the presence of oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ ions. All the samples indicate a high UV–Vis light absorption. The photocatalytic activity decreases with the increase in synthesis temperatures, which can be attributed to the energy gap and grain size of the nanoparticles. Magnetization measurements revealed that all the samples show room temperature ferromagnetism (RTMF) which can be attributed to the effects of the oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ ions.
Spontaneous Organization of Uniform CeO2 Nanoflowers by 3D Oriented Attachment in Hot Surfactant Solutions Monitored with an in Situ Electrical Conductance Technique

Abstract:Uniform CeO(2) nanoflowers were synthesized by rapid thermolysis of (NH(4))(2)Ce(NO(3))(6) in oleic acid (OA)/oleylamine (OM), by a unique 3D oriented-attachment mechanism. CeO(2) nanoflowers with controlled shape (cubic, four-petaled, and starlike) and tunable size (10-40 nm) were obtained by adjusting the reaction conditions including solvent composition, precursor concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time. The nanoflower growth mechanism was investigated by in situ electrical conductance measurements, transmission electron microscopy, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The CeO(2) nanoflowers are likely formed in two major steps, that is, initial formation of ceria cluster particles capped with various ligands (e.g., OA, OM, and NO(3) (-)) via hydrolysis of (NH(4))(2)Ce(NO(3))(6) at temperatures in the range 140-220 degrees C, and subsequent spontaneous organization of the primary particles into nanoflowers by 3D oriented attachment, due to a rapid decrease in surface ligand coverage caused by sudden decomposition of the precursor at temperatures above 220 degrees C in a strong redox reaction. After calcination at 400 degrees C for 4 h the 33.8 nm CeO(2) nanoflowers have a specific surface area as large as 156 m(2) g(-1) with high porosity, and they are highly active for conversion of CO to CO(2) in the low temperature range of 200-400 degrees C. The present approach has also been extended to the preparation of other transition metal oxide (CoO, NiO, and CuO(x)) nanoflowers.
Controllable synthesis of spherical cerium oxide particles

Abstract:Spherical CeO2 submicron particles were synthesized by a facile PVP-assisted hydrothermal method. By the analysis of XRD, FESEM, TEM and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), we confirmed that the as-obtained spherical CeO2 particles were formed by the oriented aggregation of fluorite CeO2 nanocrystals. The formation mechanism was discussed by varying synthetic parameters such as reaction temperature, and the concentration of cerium salt. In our synthetic process, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O was first hydrolyzed to rod-like organic cerium salt by the assistance of PVP, then the organic cerium salt was decomposed into CeO2 nanocrystals. Finally, spherical CeO2 particles were formed by the oriented aggregation of these CeO2 nanocrystals through the interaction between the same crystal planes of different nanocrystals and the assistance of PVP.

Abstract:Uniform Ce1−xZrxO2 (x=0.2–0.8) nanocrystals with ultra-small size were synthesized through a thermolysis process, facilitated by the initial formation of precursor (hydrated (Ce,Zr)-hydroxides) at low temperature. TEM, XRD, EDAX, and Raman spectra were employed to study the formation of the solid solutions with various Ce/Zr ratios. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra showed that the ratios of Ce3+ to Ce4+ in both surface and bulk for the as-prepared Ce1−xZrxO2 nanocrystals increased with the zirconium content x. The well-distributed Zr and Ce in the hydrated (Ce,Zr)-hydroxides before their thermolysis became the crucial factor for the structural homogeneity of the products. In addition, this strategy was extended to the synthesis of Ce1−xGdxO1−x/2, Ce1−xSmxO1−x/2, and Ce1−xSnxO2 solid solutions. Catalytic measurements indicated that the ceria-based catalysts were active for CO oxidation at temperatures beyond 250°C and the sequence of catalytic activity was Ce0.5Zr0.5O2>Ce0.8Zr0.2O2>Ce0.2Zr0.8O2>Ce0.5Sm0.5O1.75.
Low-temperature facile template synthesis of crystalline inorganic composite hollow spheres

Abstract:This report presents a facile approach for the low-temperature synthesis of crystalline inorganic-oxide composite hollow spheres by employing the bulk controlled synthesis of inorganic-oxide nanocrystals with polymer spheres as templates. The sulfonated polystyrene gel layer can adsorb the target precursor and induce inorganic nanocrystals to grow on the template in situ. The crystalline phase and morphology of the composite shell is tunable. By simply adjusting the acidity of the titania sol, crystalline titania composite hollow spheres with tunable crystalline phases of anatase, rutile, or a mixture of both were achieved. The approach is general and has been extended to synthesize the representative perovskite oxide (barium and strontium titanate) composite hollow spheres. The traditional thermal treatment for crystallite transformation is not required, thus intact shells can be guaranteed. The combination of oxide properties such as high refractive index, high dielectric constant, and catalytic ability with the cavity of the hollow spheres is promising for applications such as opacifiers, photonic crystals, high-kappa-gate dielectrics, and photocatalysis.
