Abstract:In this paper the influence of mineral admixtures on early shrinkage of ordinary concrete with the same water-binder ratio is studied by self-made equipment and CABR-NES deformation instrument developed by China Academy of Building Research institute. All concrete specimens are cured with one surface exposed to air and others are covered with plastic film. The replacement ratio of mineral admixtures is 10%, 20% and 30%, respectively, and a mixture of a combination of both fly ash and slag is also studied. The results indicate fly ash reducing the early shrinkage of ordinary concrete, and the shrinkage decreases with the increasing of replacement ratio, but the effect is not so significant when the replacement ratio is above 20%. Slag also reduces the early shrinkage of ordinary concrete, and the shrinkage decreases with the increasing of replacement ratio, but the effect is not so significant when the replacement ratio is below 20%. Mixture with a combination of both fly ash and slag has lower shrinkage than mixture with fly ash.

Abstract:For quite a long period, the shrinkage and crack of concrete have greatly shorted the life of structure and increased the cost of maintaining. Restraining the shrinkage and crack of concrete by using of expansive agent has been an effective controlling method since the setting of shrinkage-compensating theory. As the performances of modern concrete being influenced by the construction requests as well as varieties of cementing materials and admixtures, temperature shrinkage and self-shrinkage are main reasons to the cracking of concrete structure. With the changing of clinker minerals, the minishing of fineness of cement products and the increasing of early strength of cement, the early strength of concrete increases faster with relative changes of the parameters such as elastic modulus, creep relaxation etc, as a result, the crack trend boosts. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to promote anti-crack capability of concrete.

Abstract:Effects of different strengths of concretes with shrinkage retarder, whether or not with addition of fly ash ormineral powder on early self-shrinking of concretes were studied by means of early self-shrinking testing plant self designedand manufactured for concrete. Testing results indicated that shrinkage retarder could effectively reduce early self-shrinkingof concrete, its shrinking retardation would increase along with increase of concrete strength. Shrinkage retarder would alsoexert excellent early shrinkage retardation effects on concretes containing fly ash or mineral powder. Fly ash and mineralpowder could reduce early shrinkage of concrete to a certain extent which would be beneficial to reduction of early stageshrinkage crack of concrete, shrinkage ratio of the concrete even though with addition of shrinkage retarder would still bemore than that of the concrete without addition of water reducer, therefore for concrete admixed with water reducer stressshould be in particular put on early stage curing.

Abstract:Based on the project requirement of a nuclear power plant, using the method of free shrinkage test and ring cracking test, shrinkage cracking resistance property of grade C35 and C50 self-compacting concrete (SCC) with the optimized mix proportion was studied. The test results between SCC and ordinary vibrated concrete afforded by nuclear power plant project with the same grade were compared. The results indicated that the shrinkage cracking resistance property of SCC is prior to the ordinary vibrated concrete with the same strength grade. This kind of SCC can satisfy the nuclear power plant project, also the test results can be a reference of SCC design theory.

Abstract:The shrinkage-reducing-waterproofing agent is an admixture that can decrease the early-age shrinkage,reduce cracking risk and improve the waterproof property of concrete significantly.The effects of this admixture on early-age shrinkage properties of concrete and cement mortar strength were investigated in this paper.The test results show that the shrinkage-reducing-waterproofing admixture can effectively reduce the early-age drying shrinkage and decrease the cracking risk of concrete.And its effect on concrete strength is limited.It is of great importance and has great potential application to improve the engineering quality.

Abstract:Concrete durability is one of the most important considerations in the design of new structures in aggressive environments. It generally depends on the quality of the concrete surface and the cracks of concrete. In this paper, the rebound numbers of concrete cast using controlled permeability formwork (CPF) and ordinary steel formwork were determined. And the early age shrinkages of concrete cured in dry environment of 20+/-2 degrees C, 75+/-5% RH, in sealed condition with plastic film and in covered condition with CPF liner were measured. Testing results indicated that CPF could improve the concrete surface hardness and reduce the early age shrinkage of concrete. So CPF can enhance concrete durability and prolong its life-span.

Abstract:Drying shrinkage is one of the most important inducements to concrete cracking in long structures. To investigate the phenomenon of non-uniform shrinkage and the influence of concrete mix proportion on drying shrinkage, the theory of non-linear moisture diffusion was applied to model shrinkage in the long reinforced concrete structure with the original mix proportion and the optimised one. The three-dimensional numerical simulation was implemented based on the thermal-structural coupled analysis by ANSYS, considering the solution analogy between the moisture field and the temperature field. The moisture field and shrinkage induced stress field in concrete were calculated. The results show that the minimum relative humidity is greater, and the maximum humidity gradient is smaller in the structure with the optimised mix proportion than that in the structure with the original one due to the slower moisture diffusion. Consequently, the optimisation of mix proportion improves the cracking resistance prominently, for the cracking time and crack propagation are delayed significantly.

Abstract:Relying on the Wanzhou Xintian Yangtze River Bridge project and taking the amount of fiber and whether the specimen is sealed or not as the changing parameters, the shrinkage of light weight ultra-high performance concrete (LUHPC) was studied. The results show that as the volume ratio of steel fiber increases, the shrinkage of LUHPC gradually decreases. As the amount of expansion agent increases, the shrinkage of LUHPC decreases, and the effect of incorporating high pedormance calcium sulpho aluminate(HCSA) expansion agent with calcium sulfo aluminate and calcium oxide as dual expansion sources is better. Covering with plastic film at an early age to retain water has a beneficial effect on inhibiting concrete shrinkage, and its shrinkage is 44.9% less than the blank control group. Furthermore, the internal curing effect of the pre-wet fine light aggregate can significantly alleviate the “water competition” between the expansion agent and the gelling material, and give full play to the expansion effect of the expansion agent, which significantly reduce the shrinkage of LUHPC.

Abstract:A large number of binder ingredients such as cement and active mineral admixtures are used in the preparation of high-strength concrete, and the water:binder ratio is extremely low. This leads to a large amount of shrinkage of concrete at the early stage of curing, which poses a great threat to the safety and durability of the structure. To solve the cracking problem of high-strength concrete induced by high shrinkage, we choose to change the admixture to solve it. In this study, a high-performance expansion agent (HPEA) and shrinkage-reducing agent, which are currently studied in a small number, were selected by changing the way of admixture, and their effects on the strength and shrinkage of high-strength concrete were compared and analyzed. The results show that the addition of a HPEA is beneficial to the compressive strength of concrete and sufficient expansion can be obtained by using a high amount of HPEA, but there is an excessive and delayed expansion to produce cracks in the later stage. A shrinkage-reducing agent plays an adverse role in the development of concrete strength, but it performs better in inhibiting shrinkage. The combination of a HPEA and shrinkage reducing agent can largely avoid the formation of cracks, and the two have a certain synergy. The main reason is that a HPEA compensates for some of the negative effects of a shrinkage-reducing agent on concrete strength, and the shrinkage-reducing agent further strengthens the inhibition effect of a HPEA on concrete shrinkage, and to some extent avoids the risk of cracks caused by delayed expansion caused by admixture problems.

Abstract:This study aimed to the problem of durability and hydration of high performance concrete .In this paper , axial compression , electric flux , and thermal of concrete were tested , and high performance concrete which incorporated inhibitor and mineral admixture with different gradation were studied .The results showed that: With optimization design , 28 d strength of concrete specimens has increased by incorporation of mineral admixtures and migrating inhibitor , and the electrochemical property of the steel bar were with the further promoted .Meanwhile , Resistance to chloride ion penetration of concrete is 39％lower than reference concrete and hydration heat of cementious material decreased by 37％than reference sample .While increasing incorporation of fly ash and mineral powder , performance of resistance to chloride ions and strength of concrete improved , and peak of hydration heat was also reduced .When mineral admixture content reached 22％, it is possible to achieve the best performance of concrete .The electric flux dropped significantly while mineral admixtures and migrating corrosion inhibitor were incorporated , and mineral admixtures and inhibitor have synergistic effect on durability of concrete and control of hydration heat .

Abstract:It is forbidden to use concrete perforated brick(CPB)wall at early ages for its big shringkage and high water content,Nevertheless,there are still many applications in engineering practice due to various reasons.Engineers should recognize their characteristics,then decide how to repair the walls.Experimental investigation is carried out in this study including bricks and walls.Firstly bricks are tested with water content,compressive strength,and etc;then whole walls at diffirent ages are tested with walls' end deformations and instantaneous strains;at last analysis and estimations are done and engineering restrictions are proposed.It is concluded that some early-age CPB bricks have wet inflations,whereas CPB walls have wet inflation and dry shrinkage circulations.Its shinkage rate is about 1.6~2.0×10-4.Walls' instantaneous strains show a pressure characreristic at beginning and then to tensile,and tend to be stable at last.Relationship between instantaneous strain and time(age)has an exponential decay trend.Results obtained in this study help engineers to control cracks and repair walls,It reflects the basic characteristics of walls at different ages,and thus has relevant engineering significance.

Abstract:Hydration and expansion properties of shrinkage-compensating composite cementitious materials were studied. The results show that sulfoaluminate as calcium expansive agent will result in a larger expansion and a greater expansion speed in early ages, so it is more suitable for the preparation of high strength shrinkage-compensating concrete. During the hydration process, when the water is sufficient, expansive agent and cement promote the hydration in early ages. While the water is in shortage, promotion changes to restraint. The effect of expansive agent for the hydration process is greater than the cement, so it grabbed the water firstly. In the case of the low water-cement ratio, expansive agent will also generate many ettringite and produce appropriate expansion. When the content of expansive agent is fixed, the effectiveness of expansion performance is closely related to the microstructure of hardened binder pastes.
Influences of Water-binder Ratio and Dosage of Fly Ash on Autogeneous Shrinkage of Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete

Abstract:The autogeneous shrinkage of concrete with and without calcium sulphoaluminate hydrate-calcium hydroxide expansive agent was measured,and the compensating effect of expansive agent on the autogeneous shrinkage of concrete and its compensating efficiency affected by water-binder ratio and fly ash dosage were investigated.The results show that the expansive agent does not compensate the shrinkage within 20 h due to a lack of restrict.After that the expansive agent could be used to reduce the autogeneous shrinkage of concrete.The elevated water-binder ratio and fly ash dosage could improve the compensating efficiency.The appropriate amount of the expansive agent(6%) could generate a sufficient expansion to compensate all the autogeneous shrinkage of concrete with water-binder ratio of 0.34 and fly ash content of 45%,and could keep it swelling constantly after 30 h.

Abstract:This paper discussed how to scientifically using expansive agents to control cracks of concrete structure. Using shrinkage compensating concrete mixed with expansive agents is an effective method to control structure cracking, the performance of shrinkage compensating concrete should be tested based on interior condition, according to which the proportion ratio should be design, and process control should be noted. The theory study of expansive agents has trailed the project application. There are two reasons for criticizing the using of expansive agents: one is from the market side, the other is from the technical side. For over thickness mass structure, we suggest concrete of high proportion fly ash should be chosen, but not the shrinkage compensating concrete mixed with expansive agents.

Abstract:The compensation effect of calcium sulfoaluminate based-expansive agent on autogenous shrinkage of three types of concrete containing different binders prepared with/without fly ash or slag were studied. The heat of hydration and non-evaporable water content of various binders were also examined. The results show that hydration reactions in all pastes are enhanced at early ages (the first two days of hydration) and reduced except slag cement pastes at late ages when expansive agent is added. It also indicates that expansive agent with 8% (in mass) dosage has compensation effect to some extent for autogenous shrinkage of ordinary Portland cement concrete and fly ash concrete; but enhances autogenous shrinkage of slag concrete.

Abstract:In the present study, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with 28 days compressive strength of 110 MPa was fabricated. Its workability, hydration heat evolution, chloride penetration resistance, and mechanical properties were analyzed. To enhance its volume stability, shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA) and super-absorbent polymer (SAP) were used, and their effect on autogenous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, and strength of the concrete were evaluated. The results indicate that high-strength SCC can be achieved using a carefully designed ternary binder system (made with cement, fly ash, and silica fume), water-reducing admixture, and low water-to-binder ratio (W/B = 0.20). Addition of SRA and SAP into the concrete significantly reduced autogenous shrinkage and slightly reduced drying shrinkage. SAP is more effective in reducing autogenous shrinkage at later age, and the effect of SRA is better than that of SAP for drying shrinkage reduction.

Abstract:Cracking of concrete structures during hydration often occurs during construction. This study investigated the expansive property of concrete with an unstrained expansive agent to reduce cracking. Laboratory tests, field measurement, and numerical simulations on deformation during hydration were investigated. The test results of the unstrained specimen indicated that the expansive ratio reached a peak in the first 14 h for the water–binder ( w/b ) ratios of 0.43 and 0.6. However, when w/b=0.3 , the expansion ratio needed a long time to reach the peak (30 h). The expansion ratio remained unchanged after the peak. The amount of the expansive agent and the water–binder ratio show a significant correlation with the expansive capacity. The relative favorable content of the expansive agent and w/b ratio of concrete with the expansive agent were 10% and 0.43, respectively. A concrete floor with the expansive agent showed an overall compressed state, which indicates that concrete shrinkage was fully compensated by the addition of the expansive agent.

Abstract:The concrete cracks in an underground structure which usually result in serious water leakage are generally treated by grouting repair. However, the widely used cement-sodium silicate (C-S) grouting material for treatment has drawbacks. One is that the gelation time is so short that the grouted slurry will be likely to plug the grouting pipe; the other is that the C-S material has low corrosion resistance against water so the strength of the C-S material will decrease sharply after interaction with the underground water. By considering the disadvantages of the traditional C-S material, this study improves the C-S material with ultrafine fly ash (UFA) and Na<sub>2</sub>HPO<sub>4</sub> and obtains its proper proportion by testing. In addition, a new grouting technology for concrete crack treatment is proposed for underground concrete structure. The modified C-S material and the repair technology have been successfully applied in a typical underground project suffering from serious water leakage, and it shows excellent repair effect. This study can provide theoretical and empirical reference for similar underground engineering.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The demand for self-compacting concrete grows continuously due to investments in new infrastructure, upgrades, or replacement of old infrastructure. This type of concrete can mold itself into the spaces intended for it on its own and fill them without the need for any vibration or external compaction. It must achieve three main properties: fluidity, passing ability, and resistance to segregation. Monitoring these properties, the quality, and the increase in the performance of concrete structures is essential to keep up with this growth. In this work, we explore the effect of adding a commercial over calcined calcium oxide-based compound, as a shrinkage-compensating admixture, on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete, particularly on the shrinkage and curing of self-compacting concrete specimens (SCC). Also, an experimental protocol is proposed for the electrical impedance analysis of concrete samples. Fluidity, compression, shrinkage, elastic modulus, and impedance spectroscopy tests were performed, in addition to scanning electron microscopy images. The additive slightly modifies the concrete properties in the fresh state. In hardened concrete, the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity increase, in addition to a reduction in shrinkage with 2.8% of the additive.
