Abstract:Drying shrinkage is one of the most important inducements to concrete cracking in long structures. To investigate the phenomenon of non-uniform shrinkage and the influence of concrete mix proportion on drying shrinkage, the theory of non-linear moisture diffusion was applied to model shrinkage in the long reinforced concrete structure with the original mix proportion and the optimised one. The three-dimensional numerical simulation was implemented based on the thermal-structural coupled analysis by ANSYS, considering the solution analogy between the moisture field and the temperature field. The moisture field and shrinkage induced stress field in concrete were calculated. The results show that the minimum relative humidity is greater, and the maximum humidity gradient is smaller in the structure with the optimised mix proportion than that in the structure with the original one due to the slower moisture diffusion. Consequently, the optimisation of mix proportion improves the cracking resistance prominently, for the cracking time and crack propagation are delayed significantly.

Abstract:The purpose is to study the temperature stress of an overlength basement concrete structure in Shenyang,to point out the effective anti-cracking measures and to achieve the jointless design of the basement.Concrete expansion,hydration heat,shrinks and environment temperature changes were calculated through correlation theories.By analyzing basement structure under the overall difference in temperature by finite computing software ABAQUS,the characteristics of temperature stress of the base board,floor and exterior wall in setting and not setting the post-pouring strengthening band were studied.The results show that the temperature stress of the basement of construction of stage 1 without the post-pouring strengthening band was larger,the stress of the basement with the post-pouring strengthening band decreased obviously;the stress of the corner,the cave-side and the local narrower parts between the holes was the largest.The conclusion shows that the expansion joint may not be set in an overlength basement by setting the post-pouring strengthening band and temperature reinforced reasonably,adopting the shrinkage-compensating concrete along with doing a good job in temperature difference,materials,production technology of concrete and construction.

Abstract:This paper presents recent advances in the calculation of shrinkage stress in concrete structures, especially focus on the effect of internal curing. In the modeling, an integrative model for autogenous and drying shrinkage predictions of concrete under drying environments is introduced first. Second, a model taking both cement hydration and moisture diffusion into account synchronously is used to calculate the distribution of internal relative humidity in concrete. Using the above two models, along with the shrinkage stress model for concrete pavement under nonlinear strain along the slab thickness, the development of shrinkage stress in concrete pavements since casting made by low, middle and high strength concrete respectively is calculated. In particular, the effects of internal curing with pre-wetted lightweight aggregates on the progress of shrinkage stress are investigated and discussed. Based on the present study, the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) the progress of shrinkage stress in concrete pavements obeys two-stage mode since concrete casting, a small stress stage (close to zero) in the moisture saturated period and a gradual increasing stage with the relative humidity gradually decreasing in the concrete; (2) the closer to the drying face, the higher the shrinkage stresses; (3) the shrinkage stress is greater in high strength slab than that in low or middle strength slab; (4) internal curing with pre-wetted lightweight aggregate can greatly reduce shrinkage stress in concrete pavement, either in low strength slab or high strength slab.

Abstract:Based on degenerated three-dimension solid virtual laminated element theory,the influence of effective prestress on ultimate bearing capacity for large-span prestressed concrete bridge is explored.According to various level of effective prestress,the ultimate bearing capacity for a classical prestressed concrete continuous rigid frame bridge is spatial analyzed and discussed by three-dimension detailed finite element model.Analysis results show the influence of effective prestress on ultimate bearing capacity for large-span prestressed concrete bridge is great.Among them,the ratio of the effective prestress of longitudinal prestressing reinforcement and vertical prestressing reinforcement is the important factor that affect the ultimate bearing capacity of bridge.The structure design of large-span prestressed concrete bridge should think highly of the influence.

Abstract:This paper evaluates the shrinkage performance of concrete under complex internal constraint environments comprising steel plates, studs, and reinforcement to investigate their respective influence laws on the shrinkage performance of concrete. An early shrinkage model of concrete under complex internal constraints was established based on the theory of capillary tension, and the effects of steel plate, nails, and steel reinforcement on the shrinkage performance of concrete were theoretically analyzed. Six sets of concrete-constrained shrinkage tests and pore structure tests were then performed under different internal constraint conditions with the steel plate thickness, reinforcement diameter, and stud-related parameters (stud diameter, height, and spacing) as research variables. The test results demonstrate that the pore structure of concrete increases with the increase in the constraint coefficient, and that the increase in the pore structure will cause a decrease in the capillary pore stress, which is the driving force of concrete shrinkage. Its decrease will inevitably lead to a decrease in concrete shrinkage. By comparing the calculated values of the shrinkage model with the measured values, it is found that the average value of the prediction error is less than 15%, which reveals that the predicted values of shrinkage are in good agreement with the measured values and proves that the model can effectively predict the shrinkage of concrete that is restrained by steel plates, pins, and reinforcing bars.

Abstract:Based on the microstructure of concrete,the time dependent temperature behavior of normal and high-performance concrete during construction was investigated,along with the in-depth research on the continuously changing physical and mechanical properties of concrete at early age.Considering material and microstructure characteristics of concrete,the mechanism,analytical method and control of early age cracking of concrete structures were studied.A method to predict and control concrete cracking was proposed.The damage modeling of the crack propagation was established.Based on the theoretical and experiment research,the development of cement hydration,temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical and fracture properties of concrete at early age were systematically evaluated.With considering the influence of shrinkage,temperature,creep,ultimate tensile strain and elastic modulus on early age cracking of concrete,an incremental method was established to calculate the stress development in concrete structures.The analytical results agree well with both the laboratory test results and the observations from actual construction projects.The research results show that the analysis of early age cracking of concrete should be based on a dynamic and systematic investigation on the temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical properties and structure characteristics of concrete.The proposed early age cracking analysis model of concrete fits well with the experiment results.The application of theoretical model and numerical simulation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis.

Abstract:Concrete durability is one of the most important considerations in the design of new structures in aggressive environments. It generally depends on the quality of the concrete surface and the cracks of concrete. In this paper, the rebound numbers of concrete cast using controlled permeability formwork (CPF) and ordinary steel formwork were determined. And the early age shrinkages of concrete cured in dry environment of 20+/-2 degrees C, 75+/-5% RH, in sealed condition with plastic film and in covered condition with CPF liner were measured. Testing results indicated that CPF could improve the concrete surface hardness and reduce the early age shrinkage of concrete. So CPF can enhance concrete durability and prolong its life-span.
Analytical Prediction and Experimental Research on Shrinkage Cracking of Restrained Early-Age Concrete

Abstract:The early-age mechanical properties and drying shrinkage of high performance concrete added with fiber were studied to investigate the development of stress in restrained concrete and predict the cracking age of concrete more precisely.An incremental representation of stress of restrained concrete ring was established based on elasticity theory in considering creep and restraint degree. Then the maximum tension stress theory was introduced to predict the cracking age of restrained concrete ring.Experimental and theoretical analysis showed that fiber addition reduced the drying shrinkage for about 2% to 20% at different ages,and the reduction decreased with age.Fiber addition also postponed the cracking age of concrete ring and narrowed the crack width.In theory,the cracking ages of the high performance concrete with and without fiber were 28 and 22 d respectively,which were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:An approach for simulating damage process of prestressed reinforced concrete structures under impact load by applying the discrete element method is presented. An element model that can simulate the reinforced concrete and the method to simulate the prestressed concrete are brought forward. The method to select the damp coefficient is also discussed in this paper. The result of numerical simulation indicates that the method brought forward in this paper is reasonable and available.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the simulation of shrinkage stress in concrete structures under dry–wet environments. In the modeling, an integrative model for autogenous and drying shrinkage predictions of concrete under dry–wet cycles is introduced first. Second, a model taking both cement hydration and moisture diffusion into account synchronously is used to calculate the distribution of interior humidity in concrete. Using the above two models, the distributions of shrinkage strain and stress in concrete columns made by normal and high strength concrete respectively under dry–wet cycles are calculated. The model results show that shrinkage gradient along the radial direction of the column from the center to outer surface increases with age as the outer circumference suffers to dry. The maximum and minimum shrinkage occur at the outer surface and the center of the column, respectively, under drying condition. As wetting starts, the shrinkage strain decreases with increase of interior humidity. The closer to the wetting face, the higher the humidity and the lower the shrinkage strain, as well as the lower the shrinkage stress. As results of the dry–wet cycles acting on the outer circumference of the column, cyclic stress status is developed within the area close to the outer surface of the column. The depth of the influencing zone of dry–wet cyclic action is influenced by concrete strength and dry–wet regime. For low strength concrete, relatively deeper influencing zone is expected compared with that of high strength concrete. The models are verified by concrete-steel composite ring tests and a good agreement between model and test results is found.

Abstract:<p>Shrinkage of concrete needs to be dealt with carefully in the design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures as it creates dimensional instability and could induce excessive tensile stress in restrained member that impacts durability. To mitigate concrete shrinkage, the critical factors such as water-to-cementitious material (W/CM) ratio, dosage of superplasticizer (SP), concrete strength and cementitious paste volume (CPV) needs to be considered in the concrete design mix. While the effects of concrete strength on shrinkage are straightforward, those of CPV, W/CM and SP are more complicated because they also affect the pore size and distribution that influence the moisture movement. In a previous study, the authors proposed to use wet packing density (WPD), which can relate the volume of voids in fresh concrete to the capillary pores in hardened concrete, to account for the combined effect of W/CM and SP on concrete shrinkage. It was proven that the shrinkage of concrete can be correlated negatively to the WPD and positively to CPV. In this paper, the shrinkage test results obtained in the authors' previous test is converted into a shrinkage design model taking into account the effect of CPV and WPD for real application in concrete mix design. The model can better predict the shrinkage of concrete at different ages up to 91 days than that in the Australian Code AS3600.</p>

Abstract:With extensive use of prestressing force,the stress state of bridge structure becomes more complex,and it is necessary to analyze the bridge structure with three-dimensioned method.But for prestressed reinforcement's number and its shape, it is difficult to simulate the spatial effect of prestressing force.Based on prestressing force's mechanism,it was proposed that equivalent node load was used to simulate its spatial effect during tensing,and that degenerated solid element was employed to take prestressed reinforcement as a part of structure and to analyze structure after grouting.The method discussed in the paper was confirmed by two examples.The result of analysis shows that this method can really simulate the spatial effect of prestressing force,and can be used to three-dimensioned analysis of prestressed concrete bridge.
Simulation and analysis of infilled-wall cracks' development by shrinkage using semi-discrete and whole type model

Abstract:For computational efficiency, numerical simulation analysis of cracks' development by dry shrinkage effect has been carried out on a practical meeting two-storey and single span wall-infilled frame structure. FEM models are used as semi-discrete type and whole type. Different column rigidity, opening sizes, and connection rigidity are described with deformation, stress, crack development results. The crack morphology and width can be comparable with practice. Gravity and vertical loads should be considered in model. Shrinkage causes large deformation near openings. Different column rigidity, opening sizes and connection rigidity cause different crack development and deformation. The uniform construction detailing is not enough for all. Primary crack of non-constructional detailing wall-infilled frame may happen at -5°C equivalent temperature, and the ultimate crack width can exceed usage permission. At last wall crack width by dry shrinkage is assessed, and some proposals are given.

Abstract:Early-age shrinkage of concrete can initiate pre-mature cracking, which can compromise the durability of concrete structures. Monitoring capillary pressure, the leading cause of concrete shrinkage, and understanding its evolution is crucial for the performance-based design of concrete, particularly at early-stages when it is more prone to cracking. This study deploys an innovative multi-scale experimental program using high-capacity tensiometers to monitor the capillary pressure up to 2000 kPa. This allowed investigating the effects of key design parameters, including the water-to-cement ratio, GGBS, SRA, and measurement depth, on the capillary pressure evolution in concrete. A new robust deep neural network model was developed to conduct extensive numerical experiments to predict the capillary pressure evolution of diverse mixtures. The net effect of multi-parameters on the capillary pressure can be investigated with this model, providing insights into the optimum design of more durable concrete mixtures with the lowest capillary pressure evolution, and guiding the implementation of appropriate cost-effective shrinkage-mitigating strategies.

Abstract:At the early age, the microstructure formation of concrete is very sensitive to the environmental conditions. A slight variation of temperature and humidity at early age will have significant influence on the macro properties of mature concrete. So the long-term service performance of concrete structure is highly related with the environmental conditions during construction. And at the same time, for concrete, the whole construction procedure, such as casting, form removal, and curing, can be also taken as a series of changes of environmental conditions and loads. As environmental conditions and construction procedure are all time dependent, so the construction will influence the service performance of concrete structure dynamically. Although the environmental conditions during construction can not be changed, while the construction procedure can be optimized accordingly to adapt to the varying environmental conditions to improve the service performance of concrete structure. As a result, a quantitative analysis and optimization on concrete structure construction will have extensive impact on civil engineering. In this research, a new method was proposed to design and optimize the construction procedure of concrete structure. Through a monitoring system, the early-age temperature and humidity during the construction process, inside and outside the concrete structure, were recorded. In considering the influence of construction procedure on the service performance of concrete structure, the casting, form removal, and curing were all quantified as the time-dependant environmental parameters applied on concrete structure. Based on the hydration theory of cementitous materials, the long-term service performance of concrete structure was evaluated and predicted. Then the influence of construction program on the service performance of concrete structure was analyzed utilizing this evaluation system, and fed back to optimize the construction procedure. And an engineering project was also provided to verify the application value of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of pavement material properties as well as slab–base interfacial characteristics on the shrinkage-induced stresses in concrete pavements is investigated by application of an analytical shrinkage stress model. The model is based on the interfacial friction stress transmitted between slab and base when concrete shrinks. A bilinear model describing the frictional stress-slippage behaviour of a slab–base interface is adopted in the modelling. By model calculations, the influences of the time-dependent material parameters, such as shrinkage strain, elastic modulus and strength of concrete, as well as the time-independent parameters such as slab–base interfacial characteristics and slab length, on the development of shrinkage-induced stresses in concrete pavements are analysed. The closed-form expression of the minimum slab length or transverse crack spacing based on the assumption that the maximum shrinkage stress in the slab falls below the tensile strength of concrete under a given concrete tensile strength and shrinkage strain is obtained. The minimum shrinkage strain and the minimum slab length required to crack the concrete pavements are provided.

Abstract:Creep and shrinkage of the concrete in composite steel-concrete beams causes variations in stresses, internal forces and displacements. A model for calculating the creep and shrinkage effects on composite beams is presented and solved by using a step-by-step method. For beams under negative bending moment, an analytical model considering stress relaxation and tension stiffening is proposed. The results of an example calculation indicate that there are cases in which the constant modular ratio adopted in the current design code is not valid, and that adoption of creep influence factor in accordance with different loading conditions may improve the validity of the transform section method.
