Abstract:It will be shown that the comment [1] contains numerous errors, misconceptions, inaccuracies, false assumptions, misunderstandings and unjustified claims. The analysis of the comment is built on a false assumption that the terminal current of an antenna fed by a waveguide is independent of frequency. This false assumption arises from the misunderstandings on the basic theory of transmission lines and misconceptions of normalization for a linear system. As a result, all the equations obtained from the assumption in the comment are incorrect, and the related discussions are untruthful. The delta gap source modeling has been abused in the comment, and this is reflected in the numerical results in the comment that give rise to negative stored energy. The main results of the commented paper have been misinterpreted by the authors of the comment, and the related analysis is established on illogical reasoning. The comment fails to pinpoint any errors in the commented paper. Instead, it reveals that the main results obtained by the authors of the comment in their previous publication [2] are incorrect.

Abstract:The calculation of antenna Q has been an interesting and a controversial topic for years. We first give a rigorous study of antenna Q by introducing a complete description of the complex power balance relation for an antenna system. Using the complex Poynting theorem, we have shown that the antenna is essentially equivalent to a one port lossy network. The Foster reactance theorem is usually stated for a lossless network. The main purpose of this paper is to determine whether the Foster reactance theorem holds for antennas. By making use of a complex frequency domain version of the Poynting theorem, we have shown that the Foster reactance theorem is valid for an antenna. Finally, the Foster reactance theorem for the antenna has been applied to demonstrate the widely held assumption Q/spl ap/1/B, provided Q/spl Gt/1, where B stands for the fractional bandwidth of an arbitrary antenna.

On the Impact of the Mutual Reactance on the Radiated Power and on the Achievable Rates

Abstract:In this brief, we consider the mutual reactance of hypothetical isotropic radiators and the influence of the mutual reactance on antenna arrays with zero mutual resistance. We compute the mutual reactance of hypothetical isotropic radiators using passivity, which has not been considered in wireless communications literature. We show that when an antenna array with zero mutual resistance is excited by ideal current sources, the mutual reactance does not have any influence on the radiated power. However, practical radio frequency amplifiers are not ideal current sources, but can often be modeled as linear sources. Then the radiated power depends on the mutual reactance. Furthermore in receive mode, the mutual reactance introduces noise correlations between the antennas. Numerical results show the impact of neglecting the mutual reactance on the radiated power and on the ergodic up- and downlink rates in an independent and identically distributed channel for a base station using a uniform linear array consisting of hypothetical isotropic radiators spaced by lambda/2, or a uniform circular array consisting of 3 lambda/2-dipoles.

Abstract:For original paper see Tsai et al. (IEEE Commun. Lett., vol.6, p.178-80, 2002 May). This comment points out three inaccurate formulae and the problems in results of the numerical simulations. The correct formulae and results of the voltage correlation coefficients are provided. Our simulations have shown the simulation results exhibit good agreement with the analytical results as long as the items of the series expansion long enough.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:We respond to a Comment on our paper [Physical Review A 80, 023823 (2009)], which appears to have stemmed from a misunderstanding of the various energy-momentum tensors of classical electrodynamics. It is shown that each stress tensor, when used in conjunction with the corresponding force-density and momentum-density expressions, yields results that are consistent with Maxwell's equations and with the conservation laws.
