Abstract:This letter proposes a novel hybrid finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method, which combines the full-wave FDTD (2, 4) method with a thin-wire model, a transmission-line equation, the Kirchhoff's law, and a two-port equivalent-circuit FDTD model, where antenna-cable coupling model and modified nodal analysismethod are also implemented through a set of proper boundary conditions. In our method, both coaxial cable and thinwire antenna are treated together without geometric meshing for full-wave simulation, and all the coupling processes among fields, transmission line equations, and circuit loads are carried out at the same time step. Such hybrid method is verified by comparing with both PSPICE and traditional FDTD method, and good agreements are obtained. Further, the proposed method is successfully applied to predict the transient electromagnetic responses of some complex transmission line networks in a vehicle-based metallic shelter.

Abstract:In a recent comment, M. Akbari-Moghanjoughi [Phys. Plasmas 17, 114701 (2010)] (whom we will refer to as A.M.) pointed out that in the quantum hydrodynamics plasma model the parameters p (the fractional positron to ion number density) and σ (the relative positron to electron Fermi temperature) are not independent quantum plasma parameters which has important consequences on the graphical interpretations presented in our article. We agree with A.M. that the phase shift cannot be plotted in a σ-p plane and the value of p=0.2 does not correspond to σ=0.02. However, the main results given by formulas and the conclusion in our paper [S.-C. Li, Phys. Plasmas 17, 082307 (2010)] are independent of the figures and remain valid. To understand and interpret the results obtained in our previous article correctly, in this response, we will show some new figures and make some discusses.

ANSYS HFSS as a new numerical tool to study wave propagation inside anisotropic magnetized plasmas in the Ion Cylotron Range of Frequencies

Abstract:The paper demonstrates the possibility to use ANSYS HFSS as a versatile simulating tool for antennas facing inhomogeneous anisotropic magnetized plasmas in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF). The methodology used throughout the paper is first illustrated with a uniform plasma case. We then extend this method to 1D plasma density profiles where we perform a first benchmark against the ANTITER II code. The possibility to include more complex phenomena relevant to the ICRF field in future works like the lower hybrid resonance, the edge propagation of slow waves, sheaths and ponderomotive forces is also discussed. We finally present a 3D case for WEST and compare the radiation resistance calculated by the code to the experimental data. The main result of this paper - the implementation of a cold plasma medium in HFSS - is general and we hope it will also benefit to research fields besides controlled fusion.

Asymptotics of the meta-atom: plane wave scattering by a single Helmholtz resonator

Abstract:Using a combination of multipole methods and the method of matched asymptotic expansions, we present a solution procedure for acoustic plane wave scattering by a single Helmholtz resonator in two dimensions. Closed-form representations for the multipole scattering coefficients of the resonator are derived, valid at low frequencies, with three fundamental configurations examined in detail: the thin-walled, moderately thick-walled and extremely thick-walled limits. Additionally, we examine the impact of dissipation for extremely thick-walled resonators, and also numerically evaluate the scattering, absorption and extinction cross-sections (efficiencies) for representative resonators in all three wall thickness regimes. In general, we observe strong enhancement in both the scattered fields and cross-sections at the Helmholtz resonance frequencies. As expected, dissipation is shown to shift the resonance frequency, reduce the amplitude of the field, and reduce the extinction efficiency at the fundamental Helmholtz resonance. Finally, we confirm results in the literature on Willis-like coupling effects for this resonator design, and connect these findings to earlier works by several of the authors on two-dimensional arrays of resonators, deducing that depolarizability effects (off-diagonal terms) for a single resonator do not ensure the existence of Willis coupling effects (bianisotropy) in bulk.

Abstract:Radio interferometry most commonly involves antennas or antenna arrays of identical design. The identical antenna assumption leads to a convenient and useful mathematical simplification resulting in a scalar problem. An interesting variant to this is a “hybrid” interferometer involving two designs. We encounter this in the characterization of low-frequency antenna/array prototypes using a homogenous low-frequency array telescope such as the Murchison Widefield Array. In this paper, we present an interferometry equation that applies to hybrid antennas. The resulting equation involves vector inner products rather than scalar multiplications. We discuss physical interpretation and useful applications of this concept in the areas of sensitivity measurement and calibration of an antenna/array under test using a compact calibrator source.

Abstract:In their comment <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9710285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9710285">cond-mat/9710285</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5024 (1998)] den Hartog and van Wees (HW) raise objections against our analysis of the experimental data presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9708162" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9708162">cond-mat/9708162</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1547 (1997)]. According to HW, we did not account for the quantum phase incoherence introduced by the Niobium compounds of the investigated Nb/Au hybrid samples. Here we show that and why this criticism is not justified. Some difficulties associated with a precise determination of the coherence lengths are discussed. It is discussed why these uncertainties do not have a qualitative impact on the results reported in our paper.

Abstract:We are often grateful to electromagnetic reciprocity for allowing us to stick to only one half of the antenna story by deriving methods and assessments for radiating antennas and then obtaining all corresponding characterizations for the device used in receiving mode. If you feel this is somehow unfair and discriminatory with regard to receiving antennas, we are about to do some justice in this issue of the magazine The nice contribution from Diao, Liu, and Warnick [A1] is, in fact, entirely devoted to receiving antennas analysis. The authors focus on dipole antennas and show how the Poynting streamline method can be successfully used for analyzing antennas in receiving mode. After a rich introduction, the main features of Poynting streamline techniques are delineated, and the authors show how this method can be used to characterize several antenna parameters and figures of merit. The article then closes with insightful conclusions summarizing the contribution.

Abstract:We have reviewed the Comment of Geyer et al. [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0708.1548" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0708.1548">arXiv:0708.1548</a>] concerning our recent work [Phys. Rev. A 75, 060102 (R) (2007)], and while we disagree with their criticisms, we acknowledge them for giving us the opportunity to add interesting addition material and a more detailed description of our experiment. We describe further our calculation and explain why a more sophisticated model is not warranted. We also present detailed experiments on the effects of electrostatic forces in our measurements and show that the contribution due to work function differences is small and that the residual electrostatic force is dominated by trapped charges and external fields. Finally, we estimate the effect of double layer interactions. These additional calculations and measurements support our original conclusion that the experimental results are consistent with the Lifshitz theory.

Abstract:We present a mathematical study of two-dimensional electrostatic and electromagnetic shielding by a cage of conducting wires (the so-called `Faraday cage effect'). Taking the limit as the number of wires in the cage tends to infinity we use the asymptotic method of multiple scales to derive continuum models for the shielding, involving homogenized boundary conditions on an effective cage boundary. We show how the resulting models depend on key cage parameters such as the size and shape of the wires, and, in the electromagnetic case, on the frequency and polarisation of the incident field. In the electromagnetic case there are resonance effects, whereby at frequencies close to the natural frequencies of the equivalent solid shell, the presence of the cage actually amplifies the incident field, rather than shielding it. By appropriately modifying the continuum model we calculate the modified resonant frequencies, and their associated peak amplitudes. We discuss applications to radiation containment in microwave ovens and acoustic scattering by perforated shells.
