Abstract:Some mathematical models are proposed to accurately describe the frequency-dependent series conductance and susceptance of the discontinuities in various finite-ground capacitive series-connected coplanar waveguides (FGCPWs). These models can predict the wideband self-resonance characteristics in the air gap regions. Also, it is pointed out that the Heinrich's equation is applicable to compute the per-unit-length parameters of the uniform FGCPWs, though it was rarely used in the past 10 years. It is shown that Heinrich's equation can be used to capture the frequency-dependent distributed resistance and inductance in a real chip environment. Using our proposed models with Heinrich's equation, numerical calculations are performed to show the effects of metallization surface conductivity and thickness of both capacitive and inductive series-connected FGCPW geometries on their frequency-dependent series resistances, series inductances and shunt capacitances. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Metal contacts play an important role in nanowire devices and are expected to exhibit qualitatively different properties from those of planar contacts due to small contact cross sections. We numerically investigate certain unique properties of nanowire-metal contacts and demonstrate that contact resistivity increases as nanowire radius shrinks. This increase is more significant for nanowire-three-dimensional metal contacts than for nanowire-one-dimensional metal contacts. The underlying cause for this size effect is identified as the strong fringing field effects, which become more significant as temperature decreases. Our simulation provides a more complete understanding of the size effects on nanowire-metal contacts.
Resonance Frequencies of a Slab with Subwavelength Slits: a Fourier-transformation Approach

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel, rigorous and simple Fourier-transformation approach to study resonances in a perfectly conducting slab with finite number of subwavelength slits of width $h\ll 1$. Since regions outside the slits are variable separated, by Fourier transforming the governing equation, we could express field in the outer regions in terms of field derivatives on the aperture. Next, in each slit where variable separation is still available, wave field could be expressed as a Fourier series in terms of a countable basis functions with unknown Fourier coefficients. Finally, by matching field on the aperture, we establish a linear system of infinite number of equations governing the countable Fourier coefficients. By carefully asymptotic analysis of each entry of the coefficient matrix, we rigorously show that, by removing only a finite number of rows and columns, the resulting principle sub-matrix is diagonally dominant so that the infinite dimensional linear system can be reduced to a finite dimensional linear system. Resonance frequencies are exactly those frequencies making the linear system rank-deficient. This in turn provides a simple, asymptotic formula describing resonance frequencies with accuracy ${\cal O}(h^3\log h)$. We emphasize that such a formula is more accurate than all existing results and is the first accurate result especially for slits of number more than two to our best knowledge. Moreover, this asymptotic formula rigorously confirms a fact that the imaginary part of resonance frequencies is always ${\cal O}(h)$ no matter how we place the slits as long as they are spaced by distances independent of width $h$.

Abstract:Strong resonant transmission of microwave radiation through a very narrow (much less than the radiation wavelength) metallic slit is recorded. The results show that a set of resonant self-coupled surface plasmons are excited within the small gap, giving a Fabry-Pérot-like behavior in accord with analytical results published earlier [Y. Takakura, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5601 (2001)]. The metallic slit, formed by two thick metal plates spaced apart by tens of microns, is inserted in a wavelength-sized aperture. On resonance the transmissivity through the metal slit is more than 2 orders of magnitude greater than the radiation impinging on the slit area.

Abstract:This paper proposes a simple and rigorous Fourier-matching method to study transverse-magnetic-polarized electro-magnetic resonances by a perfectly conducting slab with a finite number of subwavelength slits of width h << 1. Abstract:We describe a formulation for near field heat transfer for a finite size system so that the heat conductance can be expressed as sums of contributions from the resonances of the combined structure of the "receiver" and the "source". Our work opens the door to investigating near field heat transfer between finite systems and in particular metamaterials whose resonances have been well studied. We illustrated our results with an analytically tractable example of energy transfer between two split ring resonantors separated by a distance d on top of each other. When the cuts of the two rings are opposite each other, the heat conductance is smaller than when the cuts of the two rings are on top of each other. Abstract:We demonstrate through both experiment and theory that in the microwave regime one can have high transmittance through narrow fractal-patterned slits in thick metallic plates, whereby the aperture is subwavelength in all cross sectional dimensions. In contrast to the recently discovered extraordinary transmissions via surface plasmon excitations and Fabry-Perot-like resonances, the transmission in the present case is independent of the incident angle, plate thickness, or array periodicity. We show the physics to be governed by the transversal shape resonance localized in the metallic fractal slots. In particular, for the lowest transmission mode the EM field experiences no phase change when transmitting through the metallic plate. Simulation demonstrates the viability of the observed phenomenon as a subwavelength $k=0$ waveguide mode, where $k$ is the axial wave number.

Abstract:In their comment <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9710285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9710285">cond-mat/9710285</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5024 (1998)] den Hartog and van Wees (HW) raise objections against our analysis of the experimental data presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9708162" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9708162">cond-mat/9708162</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1547 (1997)]. According to HW, we did not account for the quantum phase incoherence introduced by the Niobium compounds of the investigated Nb/Au hybrid samples. Here we show that and why this criticism is not justified. Some difficulties associated with a precise determination of the coherence lengths are discussed. It is discussed why these uncertainties do not have a qualitative impact on the results reported in our paper.

Anti-resonance and the “0.7 Anomaly” in Conductance Through a Quantum Point Contact

Abstract:We investigate the transmission of electrons through a quantum point contact by using a quasi-one-dimensional model with an extra local bound state staying below the band bottom. While the complete transmission in lower channels gives rise to plateaus of conductance at multiples of 2e2/h, the electrons in the lowest channel are scattered by the local bound state when it is singly occupied. This scattering produces a wide anti-resonant zero-transmittance for singlet formed by tunneling and local electrons, and has no effect on triplets, leading to an exact 0.75(2e2/h) shoulder prior to the first 2e2/h plateau. While at low temperature, the formation of Kondo cloud screens magnetic moment of the local bound state and reduces the scattering to the singlet channel, complementing the shoulder from 0.75 to 1.
Electronic conductance via atomic wires: a phase field matching theory approach

Abstract:A model is presented for the quantum transport of electrons, across finite atomic wire nanojunctions between electric leads, at zero bias limit. In order to derive the appropriate transmission and reflection spectra, familiar in the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, we develop the algebraic phase field matching theory (PFMT). In particular, we apply our model calculations to determine the electronic conductance for freely suspended monatomic linear sodium wires (MLNaW) between leads of the same element, and for the diatomic copper-cobalt wires (DLCuCoW) between copper leads on a Cu(111) substrate. Calculations for the MLNaW system confirm the correctness and functionality of our PFMT approach. We present novel transmission spectra for this system, and show that its transport properties exhibit the conductance oscillations for the odd- and even-number wires in agreement with previously reported first-principle results. The numerical calculations for the DLCuCoW wire nanojunctions are motivated by the stability of these systems at low temperatures. Our results for the transmission spectra yield for this system, at its Fermi energy, a monotonic exponential decay of the conductance with increasing wire length of the Cu-Co pairs. This is a cumulative effect which is discussed in detail in the present work, and may prove useful for applications in nanocircuits. Furthermore, our PFMT formalism can be considered as a compact and efficient tool for the study of the electronic quantum transport for a wide range of nanomaterial wire systems. It provides a trade-off in computational efficiency and predictive capability as compared to slower first-principle based methods, and has the potential to treat the conductance properties of more complex molecular nanojunctions.

Deep Subwavelength Electromagnetic Transparency through Dual Metallic Gratings with Ultranarrow Slits

Abstract:In this Letter, we study the transmission response of microwaves through two identical metallic plates machined with ultranarrow slit arrays. The measured and calculated transmission spectra consistently display a striking transmission peak at wavelength much larger than any characteristic length of the structure (e.g., about twenty-fold of the lattice period), which can not be directly explained by the existing mechanisms. Both the LC-circuit-based microscopic picture and the effective-medium-based macroscopic model are established to capture the essential physics behind such unexpected resonance at the deep subwavelength scale. Prospective applications of this novel transmission property can be anticipated, considering the merits of compact and excellent immunity to structural imperfections.

Abstract:The measurement of conductance through a narrow channel interrupted by two controlled potential barriers has been reported recently. Reproducible periodic oscillations of the conductance as a function of the gate voltage were observed. By including the change in resonant levels with chemical potential, we have used a tunnelling mechanism through localized changing levels in a modified Coulomb blockade model to explain this effect. In order to get rid of any unknown model parameters so as to justify our modified Coulomb blockade model, instead of the direct comparison of the period of conductance oscillations, we directly compare the box capacitances both from our calculation and from the value derived from the experiment.
Sizable Electromagnetic Forces in Parallel-Plate Metallic Cavity

Abstract:Using a boundary element method to calculate the electromagnetic fields and the Maxwell stress tensor method to compute the electromagnetic forces, we investigate electromagnetic wave induced forces acting on a pair of identical metal plates that forms an electromagnetic resonance cavity. Different frequency regimes are considered, from infrared frequencies with micron scale structures down to the microwave regime which involves millimeter scale structures. We found that at both length scales, the electromagnetic wave induced forces can be significantly stronger than the usual photon pressure exerted by a laser beam if the cavity is excited at resonance although the mechanisms that underlie the strong force are different at different length scales. In the infrared frequency regime, the strong force is induced by field penetration into the metal, whereas in the microwave regime, the electromagnetic force is induced by the leakage of electric field at the edges. At both frequency scales, we compare the results we obtained for Au metal plates with fictitious perfect electric conductor plates so as to understand the effect of field penetration. We also showed that a transmission line model can give simple expressions that can capture the essence of the physics. The effect of surface corrugation and surface roughness is also investigated, and we find that corrugation/roughness generally induces attraction between the plates.

Abstract:Conductivity in a multiband system can be divided into intra- and interband contributions, and the latter further into symmetric and antisymmetric parts. In a flat band, intraband conductivity vanishes and the antisymmetric interband contribution, proportional to the Berry curvature, corresponds to the anomalous Hall effect. We investigate whether the symmetric interband conductivity, related to the quantum metric, can be finite in the zero frequency and flat band limit. Starting from the Kubo-Greenwood formula with a finite scattering rate η , we show that the DC conductivity is zero in a flat band when taking the clean limit (η→0) . If commonly used approximations involving derivatives of the Fermi distribution are used, finite conductivity appears at zero temperature T=0 ; we show however that this is an artifact due to the lack of Fermi surfaces in a (partially) flat band. We then analyze the DC conductivity using the Kubo-Streda formula, and note similar problems at T=0 . The predictions of the Kubo-Greenwood formula (without the approximation) and the Kubo-Streda formula differ significantly at low temperatures. We illustrate the results within the Su-Schrieffer-Heger model where one expects vanishing DC conductivity in the dimerized limit as the unit cells are disconnected. We discuss the implications of our results to previous work which has proposed the possibility of finite flat band DC conductivity proportional to the quantum metric. Our results also highlight that care should be taken when applying established transport and linear response approaches in the flat band context, since many of them utilize the existence of a Fermi surface and assume scattering to be weak compared to kinetic energy. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.108.155108 ©2023 American Physical Society

Microwave Conductance in Random Waveguides in the Cross-over to Anderson Localization and Single-Parameter Scaling.

Abstract:The nature of transport of electrons and classical waves in disordered systems depends upon the proximity to the Anderson localization transition between freely diffusing and localized waves. The suppression of average transport and the enhancement of relative fluctuations in conductance in one-dimensional samples with lengths greatly exceeding the localization length, L>>ξ, are related in the single-parameter scaling (SPS) theory of localization. However, the difficulty of producing an ensemble of statistically equivalent samples in which the electron wave function is temporally coherent has so-far precluded the experimental demonstration of SPS. Here we demonstrate SPS in random multichannel systems for the transmittance T of microwave radiation, which is the analog of the dimensionless conductance. We show that for L∼4ξ, a single eigenvalue of the transmission matrix (TM) dominates transmission, and the distribution of the T is Gaussian with a variance equal to the average of −ln T, as conjectured by SPS. For samples in the cross-over to localization, L∼ξ, we find a one-sided distribution for T. This anomalous distribution is explained in terms of a charge model for the eigenvalues of the TM τ in which the Coulomb interaction between charges mimics the repulsion between the eigenvalues of TM. We show in the localization limit that the joint distribution of T and the effective number of transmission eigenvalues determines the probability distributions of intensity and total transmission for a single-incident channel.
An Experiment Study of Gold Nano-Film'S Conductivity at Microwave and Terahertz Frequencies

Abstract:We measured the complex conductivity of gold nano-films in microwave X-, Ka-band and terahertz band. The results obtained from the open-terminal method and spectroscopy technique are in good agreement with the reported ones. Different from the bulk metal, the nano-film's conductivity has some deviation from the Drude model though it may be suitable in narrow frequency range. We find film's surface morphology has a strong effect not only on the magnitude and frequency dependence of the alternating current conductivity but also on the corresponding parameters, i.e. the plasma frequency and the scattering rate.

Abstract:In this paper the macroscopic condition for dissipationless current in conductors is investigated and a set of improved electromagnetic equations are proposed. With these equations we show that the dissipation is particularly relative to free volume charges in conductors that originate from self-Hall-effect. The steadily normal current coexists with free volume charges and the steadily superconducting current doesn't. Zero Hall coefficient is a candidate condition for nonexistence of free volume charges in conductors and a possible mechanism is exciton conduction or electron-hole pairing.
