Abstract:The phenomenon of the extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength hole arrays has enormous application potential in photonic devices. When an electron bunch passes through a subwavelength hole array with inner tunnels, the SPR radiation in terahertz band with the above phenomenon will be obtained if the transmission peak locates in the SPR band. Due to the enhanced transmission peak, the spectrum of SPR becomes narrow with an obvious peak.

Abstract:In the paper we show that under the excitation of a line current, a dielectric medium loading in the lower half-space of the sub-wavelength holes array brings surprising changes to the diffraction radiation. In the lower half-space, the surface wave becomes a radiation wave. The fundamental space harmonic is transformed into Cherenkov radiation with unique characteristics and the first negative space harmonic is converted into a radiation wave with the angle of Smith-Purcell radiation. Consequently, in the lower half-space interference happens due to these two kinds of diffraction radiation.

Abstract:Quadrate hole array is explored to study the influence of unsymmetrical periodicity on extraordinary optical transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength holes. It is found that the transmission efficiency of light and the ratio between transmission efficiencies of horizontal and vertical polarized light can be continuously tuned by rotating the quadrate hole array. The authors can calculate out the transmission spectra (including the heights and locations of peaks) for any rotation angle θ with a simple theoretical model.

Abstract:. Superenhanced light transmission through subwavelength rectangular hole arrays have been reported and some investigations have been made into the physical origin of this phenomenon [K.J. Klein Koerkamp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 , 183901 (2004)]. In our current work, by performing FDTD (finite difference in the time domain) numerical simulations, we demonstrate that mechanism that is different from surface plasmon polaritons set up by the periodicity at the in-plane metal surfaces may account for this superenhanced light transmission. We suggest that for arrays of rectangular holes with small enough width in comparison to the wavelength of the incident light, standing electromagnetic fields can be set up inside the cavity by the surface plasmons on the hole walls with its intensity being substantially enhanced inside the cavity. So resonant cavity-enhanced light transmission is predominant and responsible for its superenhanced light transmission. Rectangular holes behave as Fabry-Pérot resonance cavities except that the frequency of their fundamental modes is restricted by their TM cutoff frequency. However we believe that both localized surface plasmon modes and surface plasmon polaritons set up by the periodicity at the in-plane metal surfaces have their shares in extraordinary optical transmission of rectangular hole arrays especially when the width of the rectangular hole is not small enough and the metal film is not thick enough.

Abstract:We report the observation of enhanced optical transmission through the metal subwavelength hole arrays with nanoparticle inside the hole, and demonstrate the transmission enhancement and the suppression due to the excitation of the localized surface plasmon (LSP). We interpret this phenomenon with the Fano theory considering the real and imaginary parts of the polarizability of the LSP.

Abstract:Based on the finite-difference time-domain method, we demonstrate multiple enhanced transmission bands through subwavelength compound periodic array of rectangular holes by adjusting the cutoff wavelength of each hole. The results show that the transmission spectrum of this structure is almost a compound of that of the corresponding periodic hole arrays with simple cell, when the holes are arranged appropriately. It is also found that the surface plasmon resonance peak and the localized resonance peak exhibit different behaviors as the symmetry of compound periodic structure varies. The proposed method provides an effective way to achieve enhanced transmission simultaneously at different selected wavelengths in the visible and infrared regions.

Abstract:We show that a metallic waveguide behaves as an electric (magnetic) plasma for transverse-electric (transverse-magnetic) polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves at frequencies below cut-off value. Inserting anisotropic resonance structures of either electric or magnetic type into a waveguide, we find extraordinary transmissions of EM waves with different polarizations through the waveguide at frequencies well below the waveguidepsilas cut-off value, following two different mechanisms. Microwave experiments, in excellent agreements with finite-different-time-domain simulations, are performed to successfully demonstrate all theoretical predictions. We then perform a systematic study based on tight-binding approximation to understand the underlying physics behind such unusual behaviors.

Abstract:We investigate the extraordinary behavior of periodic photonic structures within radiation continuum from the perspective of interfering resonance. The coupled-channel equations of both TE-like and TM-like polarizations are reformulated into the similar forms of the quantum-defect theory that describes the interference of resonances belonging to different Coulombic quantum channels. The concepts of closed-channel, open-channel, coupling potential, and eigenvalues are well interpreted. Some iteration techniques, i.e., field-iteration and k-iteration, are proposed to obtain self-consistent solution of the coupled-channel equations. The iterations are important to guarantee quantitative accuracy for high-index-contrast structure, in which the strength of wave interactions is significantly enhanced compared with its low-index-contrast counterpart. The semianalytical results of resonance wavelength, transmissivity/reflectivity spectrum, and band structure agree well with the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, confirming the accuracy of the iterations. The interfering resonance provides a clear and consistent picture to understand the periodic photonic structure within radiation continuum, and also reveals the intrinsic similarities between the photonic and quantum systems.

Abstract:The light transmission through a square array of circular holes in a metal film has been studied theoretically, taking into account the diffraction modes and the surface plasmons. The calculations are in good agreement with experimental results. By studying the dependence of the transmission spectrum on the structural parameters of the hole array, we show that the transmission peaks are strongly correlated with the waveguide modes inside the cylindrical holes. Associated with the propagation characteristics (propagating or evanescent) of the waveguide modes, Fabry-Perot resonance in the circular holes or extended surface resonance on the metal films would give rise to the transmission peaks.
The Role of Localized Surface Plasmon in the Thz Transmission of Metallic Rectangular Hole Arrays

Abstract:We report on transmission enhancement and suppression in rectangular aperture arrays at terahertz range. Experiments and simulations reveal that transmission maxima and minima of metal film perforated with rectangular apertures arrays are caused by the shape resonance and the interference between surface waves respectively. To further investigate the relative contributions of shape resonance and interference between SPPs, we have examined the density of electrons whose distribution property is identified to the normal component of E-filed which clearly shows that transmission resonance stems from excitation of shape resonance at the edge of the hole. This resonance dominated by cutoff function is responsible for resonance peak at transmitted spectrum. The interference of SPPs originated at surface further enhances the resonances and gives a set of minima in the transmittance spectrum. This study contributes a better understanding of fundamental physics behind the extraordinary transmission of aperture arrays at THz range and provides a simple method for the design of THz devices.
Mathematical Theory for Electromagnetic Scattering Resonances and Field Enhancement in a Subwavelength Annular Gap

Abstract:This work presents a mathematical theory for electromagnetic scattering resonances in a subwavelength annular hole embedded in a metallic slab, with the annulus width h << 1. The model is representative among many 3D subwavelength hole structures, which are able to induce resonant scattering of electromagnetic wave and the so-called extraordinary optical transmission. We develop a multiscale framework for the underlying scattering problem based upon a combination of the integral equation in the exterior domain and the waveguide mode expansion inside the tiny hole. The matching of the electromagnetic field over the hole aperture leads to a sequence of decoupled infinite systems, which are used to set up the resonance conditions for the scattering problem. By performing rigorous analysis for the infinite systems and the resonance conditions, we characterize all the resonances in a bounded domain over the complex plane. It is shown that the resonances are associated with the transverse electric (TE) and transverse electromagnetic (TEM) waveguide modes in the annular hole, and they are close to the real axis with the imaginary parts of order Omicron (h). We also investigate resonant scattering when an incident wave is present. It is proved that the electromagnetic field is amplified with order Omicron (1/h) at the resonant frequencies that are associated with the TE modes in the annular hole. On the other hand, one particular resonance associated with the TEM mode cannot be excited by a plane wave but can be excited with a near-field electric dipole source, leading to field enhancement of order Omicron(1/h).

Abstract:We present a novel theoretical approach for modeling the resonant properties of transmission through subwavelength apertures penetrating metal films. We show that cavity mode theory applies to an effective resonant cavity whose dimensions are determined by the aperture's geometry and the evanescent decay lengths of the associated diffracted waves. This method suggests a concrete physical mechanism for the enhanced transmission observed in periodic aperture arrays, namely it is the evanescently scattered light, localized in the near field of metal surface, which couples into the apertures. Furthermore, it analytically predicts the frequencies of peaks in enhanced transmission, the quality factor of the peaks, and explains their dependence on variation in the hole radius, periodicity, and the film thickness over a wide range of geometries. This model demonstrates strong correlation to simulation and existing results with a high degree of accuracy.

Abstract:We investigated the transmission enhancement and the suppression in rectangular holes array at terahertz range. Experiments and simulations verified that the metal film perforated with rectangular holes array had the shape resonance and the Wood-Rayleigh anomalies. With the development of previously reported theory, we explored the contribution of the shape of single hole and the periodicity of array. The shape resonance caused by the geometry of structure leaded to the location of the resonance peak. The periodicity of array enhanced the peak and provided the minima in spectrum in the condition of the incident E-field parallel the direction of periodicity. This study contributed a better understanding of fundamental physics behind the extraordinary transmission of periodic arrays at THz range and provided a simple method for the THz devices designing.

Abstract:We present a new explanation of the extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength hole array in metal films. By using the classical coupled-wave theory, we analyzed the coupling process between light and the surface plasmons wave on metal films with hole array. The analysis shows clearly the physical mechanism of extraordinary optical transmission. The calculation demonstrates that, instead of energy flux directly passing through the holes, the electromagnetic modes could exchange energy by overlapping the evanescent fields under the assistance of hole array. The periodicity of the array provides the momentum-matching condition to present the transmission peaks. The theory exhibits a good agreement with the experimental results reported in every detail.

Abstract:We fabricated trimer arrays consisting of three identical rectangular holes in each unit in silver films and measured the transmission spectra in the near-infrared region. Both the simulation using the finite difference time domain method and the experiment measurement show that the unit configuration plays a crucial role in the degeneracy of the transmission peak, which arises from the scattering of electromagnetic wave between adjacent units and electromagnetic coupling among holes in each unit. The field distribution suggests that the role an individual hole plays in the transmission resonance depends on the position of each hole and the surface plasmon polaritons' propagation direction. The results provide an additional way to tune the degeneracy of the transmission resonance peak in subwavelength metallic structures, which may find applications such as in filter devices, sensing, and the related nanophotonic components.

Abstract:In this paper, we have demonstrated a kind of extraordinary transmission in the photonic first pass band of two-dimensional terahertz metallic photonic crystals: in the regime of low-middle metal filling radio, resonances among the metallic cylinders lead to sharp and high resonance peaks of Lorentz type, layer dependency of the peak numbers. The effect of positional disorders of metallic cylinders has been investigated as well. Based on a simple model proposed in this paper, we can intuitively understand the extraordinary transmission and roughly estimate resonance frequencies. Our results agree qualitatively with the experimental data reported in Appl. Phys. Lett. 65, 645.

Abstract:The letter explores the physics of the diffraction radiation of a subwavelength holes array. We show when a line current is uniformly moving above the array, a novel diffraction radiation array is discovered, in which each hole emits its own radiation in both sides of the array as a radiation cell, and all these cells together organize a distinct diffraction radiation array. Therefore, under the excitation of a line current, the subwavelength holes array becomes a radiation array. Making use of the integral equation method, analytical theory for such a novel diffraction radiation is built up. The results of the calculations of this theory agree with that by the computer simulation. The discovery and the theory of the novel diffraction radiation array are of great significance of the subwavelength holes array physics and optics.
