Abstract:In this paper, we describe the formation of mononuclear Zn+ cations in the silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieve with a chabazite structure (SAPO-CHA). Metallic zinc reacts with the protons present in the cages of microporous SAPO-CHA, leading to the formation of rnononuclear univalent zinc. The prepared host-guest compound was characterized by spectroscopic and magnetic techiques such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron spin resonance (ESR), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis and magnetic property measurement. The ESR spectra show that there are unpaired electrons in the host-guest compound, and antiferromagnetic ordering has also been observed for the material at a temperature of about 4 K.

Abstract:Continuous b-oriented zeolite MFI monolayer films (<0.4 pm thick) were prepared by in situ crystallization on metal substrates (stainless steel and aluminum alloy) using a synthesis solution 0.32TPAOH:TEOS:165H(2)O (TPAOH: tetra-propylammonium hydroxide, TEOS: tetraethylorthosilicate). Effects of crystallization temperature and time, surface roughness, position and chemical nature of the substrate, and aging time of the synthesis solution were investigated and a mechanism for the b-oriented monolayer thin film formation was discussed. The supported films were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Polishing of the film with a normal lab polisher leads to a continuous ultrathin zeolite film with a surface roughness less than 0.05 mum. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The first bulk homogeneous nanocrystalline Zr60Al15Ni10Co15 (at. %) alloy prepared by melt casting without the amorphous matrix is reported. In this work, the complete grain refinement directly by solidification processing, when qualitatively compared to the previously reported nanocrystallization by postdevitrification of amorphous alloy solid precursors, produces nanograins that have a relatively narrower size range (7.4 nm in average) and are randomly oriented. The total inhomogeneous chemical affinity of the multicomponent alloy was proposed to thermodynamically favor the three-dimensional nanoscale nucleation from alloy melts. Clustering of different atoms in the ZrAlNiCo alloy occurs while the material is still in the molten state. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Variations in the microporous structure and non-framework aluminum (AlNF) distribution of HZSM-5 zeolite with a crystal size less than 100 nm dealuminated by thermal and hydrothermal treatment have been investigated by xenon adsorption and 129Xe NMR spectroscopy. The secondary pores in the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite are observed directly via 129Xe NMR spectroscopy. As evidenced by 129Xe NMR and XPS, for the calcined microsized HZSM-5, most of the AlNF may deposit on its external surface, a small amount of AlNF may be located in its channels. However, for the calcined nanosized HZSM-5, most of the AlNF may be located in the channels, while a small amount of AlNF may be located on the external surface. After hydrothermal treatment at lower temperature, the distribution of AlNF in dealuminated nanosized HZSM-5 is heterogeneous. It is not only present in the channels and on the external surface as in the case of microsized HZSM-5, but also near the pore entrances at the outer edge of the crystallites. However, at higher steaming temperatures, more AlNF in both the microsized and the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites will migrate to their external surface.

Abstract:This work presents a facile method for synthesizing monolithic ZSM-5 nanoparticle aggregates (ZNA) by directly converting the ordered mesoporous material Al-SBA-15 under low solvent content conditions. The effects of crystallization temperature, time, and the structure-directing agents (SDAs) content on the textural properties and on the crystallinity of the final product were investigated. The crystal growth was physically confined to a nano-scale space surrounded by chemically inert units previously formed through the controllable decomposition of P123 micelles. The resulting nanoparticles exhibit uniform size in the range of 20-40 nm. Moreover, ZNA has a monolithic morphology of several micrometers in size, closely resembling that of raw Al-SBA-15, allowing the avoidance of a high-speed centrifugal separation process. The location of nanoparticles inside ZNA bulk particles can be mainly restricted to replicating the Al-SBA-15 walls by slowing down the inorganic species consumption process, and consequently, forming a visibly ordered mesostructure. Abstract:Colloidal zoned MFI crystals, i.e., continuous crystals with a compositional gradient resulting in a ZSM-5 core covered with a silicalite-1 shell, were synthesized by the addition of ZSM-5 seeds to a silicalite-1 synthesis solution. The effect of the surface aluminum content of the ZSM-5 crystals on the synthesis of the zoned MFI crystals was investigated using SEM, TEM, XPS and XRD. An acid treatment of the ZSM-5 seeds, which removed some of the aluminum at the surface, proved favorable for the synthesis of zoned MFI crystals.

Abstract:Aluminosilica monoliths with bicontinuous macropores and interconnected mesopores were successfully prepared by a double-template technique. The influence on monolithic pore structures and acidic properties based on aluminum variety was studied in detail, which demonstrated that aluminum addition and water amount in starting compositions had great effects on the formation of hierarchical pore system with bicontinuous macropores and interconnected mesopores. In addition to bicontinuous macropores and plenty of mesopores, the obtained aluminosilica monoliths also possessed considerable acid sites for catalysis. And such aluminosilica monolith with proper acidity and good diffusion showed best performance on catalytic reaction of large molecules such as the cracking 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene compared with other aluminosilica monolith.

Abstract:This work investigates the impact of alloy composition on the microstructure and phase distribution of rapidly solidified Al–Zn alloys. The results demonstrate that the size and distribution of α -Al grains vary with the Zn content, and a Zn-rich phase precipitates along the grain boundaries with Zn content over 15 at%. Furthermore, the alloy composition of the Al–Zn precursors significantly influences the formation, microstructure, crack appearance and length scale of ligaments in nanoporous zinc (NP-Zn) prepared by dealloying. Additionally, the activity and selectivity of NP-Zn in CO 2 electroreduction were explored in an aqueous KHCO 3 electrolyte. The results indicate that a smaller ligament size of NP-Zn is more conducive to enhancing the catalytic performance. The research underscores the potential for adjusting the nanostructure of NP-Zn by controlling the composition of precursor alloys, providing valuable insights for designing efficient Zn-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The amorphous wall structure of Al-SBA-15 was converted in-situ to uniform ZMS-5 nanocrystal aggregates. Si/Al ratio in resulting ZSM-5 nanocrystal aggregates is close to that of raw Al-SBA-15. The ZSM-5 aggregates exhibits a monolithic morphology, a replica of the shape of raw Al-SBA-15, which significantly allows the avoidance of a high-speed centrifugal separation process. The incompletely decomposed structure-directing template of Al-SBA-15 works as inert units inserting in the mesopores of Al-SBA-15 materials. The nucleation and growth of zeolite were physically confined inside a nano-scale space surrounded by the chemically inert units that were generated from the controlled decomposition of the surfactant.

Abstract:The corrosion resistance of Zr alloys tightly connects to the oxide films on Zr alloys. We use first-principles computational tensile test to perform a systematical investigation on the tensile strain–stress behaviors of monoclinic zirconia, and reveal the formation mechanism of initial pores and cracks in the oxide films. Based on calculated results, we propose a new mechanism of initiation of pores in the oxide films, which has solved the puzzle of pore formation at oxide/metal (O/M) interface of pure Zr. Moreover, our results are also well consistent with many previous microstructure characterization results of Zr alloys.

Abstract:Three-dimensional transition metal hydroxide monoliths were facilely fabricated by a sol-gel process accompanied by phase separation in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and propylene oxide (PO). In the typical ZnCl2-PAA-PO system, PAA is used as a phase separation inducer as well as a framework former to control the phase separation and the formation of macrostructures, whereas PO works as a proton scavenger to initiate the gelation of the system and freeze the macrostructures. Appropriate amount of PAA, PO and solvents allow the formation of zinc (Zn) hydroxide monolith with cocontinuous skeletons and interconnected macropores, and the construction mechanism and characteristics of macrostructure are also investigated. The resultant dried gels are amorphous Zn hydroxide monolith with a narrow macropore size distribution (~1 μm). This approach is further used to successfully prepare macroporous single or binary composite transition metal hydroxide monoliths.

Abstract:In this study, detailed investigations about a novel dissolution-crystallization synthetic route for the fabrication of hierarchically macro/microporous ZSM-5 single crystals were conducted. During the fabrication, pre-prepared mesoporous aluminosilicate spheres (MASS) acted not only as raw materials but also as quasi scaffold templates simultaneously to construct additional macropores. Factors like the amount of alkali sodium hydroxide (NaOH), crystallization temperature and Si/Al ratios of MASS could affect the successful fabrication of such hierarchical zeolites via varying either the dissolution behaviors of precursors or the crystallization of zeolite crystals. Generally, only with suitable amounts of alkali NaOH that matched the Si/Al ratios of precursors and at appropriate crystallization temperature could the balance between the dissolution and crystallization of MASS precursors be achieved and thus the intracrystalline macropores be constructed. Owing to the introduction of rich intracrystalline macropores, the diffusional properties of the hierarchical ZSM-5 crystals were significantly enhanced, which has also been well proved through the toluene adsorption experiment with an intelligent gravimetric analyzer. Thus, with a similar Zn-modification, all the three hierarchical samples with different Si/Al ratios exhibited a much longer lifetime and higher aromatics selectivity in the MTA reactions than the conventional microporous sample.

Abstract:The synthesis of hierarchical nanosized zeolite materials without growth modifiers and mesoporogens remains a substantial challenge. Herein, we report a general synthetic approach to produce hierarchical nanosized single-crystal aluminophosphate molecular sieves by preparing highly homogeneous and concentrated precursors and heating at elevated temperatures. Accordingly, aluminophosphate zeotypes of LTA (8-rings), AEL (10-rings), AFI (12-rings), and -CLO (20-rings) topologies, ranging from small to extra-large pores, were synthesized. These materials show exceptional properties, including small crystallites (30-150 nm), good monodispersity, abundant mesopores, and excellent thermal stability. A time-dependent study revealed a non-classical crystallization pathway by particle attachment. This work opens a new avenue for the development of hierarchical nanosized zeolite materials and understanding their crystallization mechanism.

Abstract:An investigation was carried out concerning mullite formation in reaction sintering of ZrSiO4/α-Al2O3 mixtures using XRD, TEM and SEM techniques. It was demonstrated that mullite might nucleate within the Al2O3-rich amorphous matrix, which was formed from the solid state reaction between α-Al2O3 and ZrSiO4. The formation of Al2O3-rich mullite and amorphous phase may imply that dissolution of Al2O3 is easier than dissociation of ZrSiO4 in the present system, and that dissociation of ZrSiO4 is a rate-limiting step in mullite grain growth at low temperatures, although the exact mechanism is still unclear. Available evidences indicate that, at final stage of mullization, Al3+ or Si4+ diffusion process through mullite layer might control mullite grain growth.
