Abstract:A simple and an efficient synthesis route, solvent mediated milling of NaH and Al with 2 mol% of the dopant precursor, Ti(OBu)(4) followed by hydrogenation, has been developed and employed to synthesize Ti-doped NaAlH4. The long-term hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, up to 100 cycles were carried out systematically. Reversibility of about 3.4 wt.% hydrogen release was obtained during the first dehydrogenation (160 degreesC) run after the initial hydrogenation of Ti-doped (NaH + Al) at 150 degreesC; similar to 11.4 MPa H-2 for 12 h. In the subsequent cycles, the storage capacity increased, reaching an optimum of 4.0 wt.%. This capacity was retained for 40 cycles with the dehydrogenation kinetic curves showing remarkable reproducibility. Comparison of the X-ray diffraction profiles of Ti-doped (NaH + Al) from initial and final stages of the cycling study reveals a growing resistance to the hydrogenation of Na3AlH6 to NaAlH4. Remarkable Hydrogen Absorption/desorption Behaviors and Mechanism of Sodium Alanates In-Situ Doped with Ti-based 2D MXene

Abstract:MXene has proven to be an excellent catalyst for the energy storage materials. By doping MXene, the hydrogen absorption and desorption performances and cycling stability of NaAlH4 can be significantly improved. However, the preparation and doping of MXene still have a great influence on its catalytic performance. In this work, Ti3C2 with great morphology and high purity was prepared by MILD method (using HCl and fluoride salt instead of using HF). The as-synthesized MXene were in-situ doped into NaH/Al to prepare the Ti3C2-doped NaH/Al composite. At the temperature of 110 degrees C, the Ti3C2-doped NaH/Al composite uptakes 4.2 wt% H-2 within 4.5 min. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of Ti3C2-doped NaH/Al composite is reduced to 76 degrees C, which is one of the lowest dehydrogenation temperatures of the reported Ti-doped sodium alanate. Ti3C2-doped NaH/Al composite possesses much lower active energy (92.5 kJ/mol for the first step and 58.1 kJ/mol for the second step), compared with the as-milled NaAlH4. Ti3C2-doped NaH/Al composite also has an extraordinary cycling hydrogen absorption and desorption properties, 99% of initial capacity can be maintained after 10 cycles. After microstructure analysis, It can be found that after ball milling, Ti3C2 decomposed into Ti and TiFx nanoclusters, which uniformly distributed on the surface of NaH/Al particles. These active titanium acts as a fast channel for hydrogen absorption and desorption. Moreover, Ti3C2-doped NaH/Al composite has a higher content of high-valence Ti compared with Ti3C2-doped NaAlH4, which may explain why its hydrogen storage properties are better than that of Ti3C2-doped NaAlH4.

Abstract:NaAlH 4 is a reversible hydrogen storage material and has attracted great attention recently. However, the application of NaAlH 4 in hydrogen storage still has great difficulties. In this study, 2D MXene Ti 2 C-doped NaAlH 4 samples were prepared in -situ by reaction ball milling of NaH under moderate condition. TPD measurement results show that all the as -prepared samples exhibit good thermodynamic performance except for the sample doped with 1 wt% Ti 2 C. And DSC analysis results show that at the heating rate of 5 K/min, the first and second dehydrogenation peak temperatures of the sample doped with 7 wt% Ti 2 C were 127.1 degrees C and 150.6 degrees C respectively, which are 57.4 degrees C and 123.6 degrees C lower than those of pure NaAlH 4 (after ball milling), respectively. Meanwhile, NaH/Al-7 wt.% Ti 2 C sample displays a superior kinetics behavior. Isothermal hydrogen evolution curves show that NaH/Al-7 wt.%Ti 2 C released 5.21 wt% H 2 within 30 min at 150 degrees C and then absorbs 5.2 wt% H 2 in 90 s at 120 degrees C. Even at a lower temperature of 80 degrees C, the sample still absorbed 4.71 wt% H 2 within 60 min. In addition, almost no release capacity attenuation was observed for NaH/Al-7 wt.%Ti 2 C after 10 hydrogen absorption/desorption cycles. The improvement of the hydrogen storage properties can be ascribed to the high reactivity of NaAlH 4 produced in situ and catalysis of lamellar Ti 3 +/-/0 species formed by the reduction of high valent Ti in Ti 2 C during ball milling.

Abstract:The hydrogen storage properties and microstructures of Ti-doped NaAlH4 complex hydrides prepared by hydrogenation of ball-milled NaH/Al mixture with xmol% Ti powder (x=0,4,6,10) were investigated. It is found that hydrogen as ball-milling atmosphere is better than argon. The reversible hydrogen storage properties improve with increasing Ti content. As the milling time (t) extends from 1 to 24h, the hydrogen desorption capacity increases first and then decreases, and reaches a maximum capacity of 4.25wt% at t=16. The catalytic mechanism for hydrogen storage behavior of Ti-doped NaAlH4 is attributed to the presence of active small TiH1.924 and TiAl particles, which are scattered on the surface of much larger NaAlH4 (NaH/Al) globelets, acting as the catalytic active sites for the complex compound and playing an important catalytic role in the hydriding-dehydriding process.

Abstract:A Ti-doped sodium aluminum hydride was prepared by ball-milling NaH/Al mixture with 10mol% Ti powder under hydrogen for 12h. The hydriding/dehydriding behaviors of the ball-milled sample under different temperatures (85–160°C) and hydrogen pressures (7.5–13.5MPa) were investigated. The results show that the hydriding/dehydriding temperature and hydrogen pressure affect the hydrogen storage behavior noticeably. During hydriding, under 13.5MPa hydrogen pressure, as the hydriding temperature increases from 85 to 140°C, the hydrogen absorption rate increases first and then decreases, and reaches the highest value at 120°C. And the hydrogen absorption rate increases with the increase of hydrogen pressure all the way from 7.5 to 13.5MPa. Moreover, the hydrogen desorption rate over the hydrogen pressure of 0.1MPa increases noticeably with increasing dehydriding temperature. On cycling, the hydriding/dehydriding capacity increases first and then decreases, reaching a maximum value at the fourth cycle. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses show that the hydrogen storage process of the system is governed by the slow reaction kinetics and incomplete reaction of Na3AlH6 in the hydriding/dehydriding processes.
Preparation and hydrogen storage characteristics of Ti-NaAlH4 complex hydride

Abstract:Ti-doped NaAlH4, complex hydride can be prepared by hydrogenation of the ball-milled (NaH/Al+Ti) composite using NaH and pre-treated Al powder as raw materials, and Ti powder as a dopant. The influence of preparation parameters (ball-milling atmosphere, milling time, and hydrogenation pressure) on its hydrogen storage characteristic has been investigated. It is found that the hydrogen storage properties are affected greatly by the preparation methods. The hydrogen storage properties of the composite ball-milled under hydrogen atmosphere are better than that of the composite ball-milled under argon atmosphere. With extending the milling time from 6 h to 24 h under hydrogen atmosphere, the hydrogen absorption capacity and rate increase first and then decrease, and the maximum values are obtained at 12 h, while the hydrogen desorption capacity and speed increase gradually. The particles of the composite will agglomerate when prolonging the milling-time over 12 h, which deteriorates the hydrogen absorption properties. As the hydrogenation pressure increases from 7.5 MPa to 13.5 MPa, the hydrogen absorption storage capacity (mass fraction) increases from 2.83% to 4.21%. The appearance of intermediate Na3AlH6 hydride phase in the ball-milled composite indicates that the Ti-doped (NaH/Al) composites ball-milled under hydrogen atmosphere can catalyze the hydrogenation reaction of NaH and Al. © Editorial office of Acta Physico-Chimica Sinica.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction patterns of NaAlH4 doped with up to 10 mol.% of either titanium or zirconium do not contain Bragg peaks for the bulk metals or their aluminum alloys. Instead the hydride lattice parameters a and c undergo significant contraction upon 2 mol.% doping and then expand as the doping level increases from 2 to 5 mol.%. These results are explained by a model that entails substitution of sodium cations by variable valence transition metal cations and the creation of Na+ vacancies in the bulk hydride lattice.

Abstract:In this study, a three-dimensional transient computational fluid dynamics model was established to investigate the influence of reinforcement weight fraction on thermal evolution behavior and fluid dynamics during selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing of TiC/AlSi10Mg nanocomposites. The powder-to-solid transition and nonlinear variation of thermal physical properties of as-used materials were considered in the numerical model, using the Gaussian distributed volumetric heat source. The simulation results showed that the increase of operating temperature and the resultant formation of larger melt pool were caused by the increase of weight fraction of reinforcement. The Marangoni convection was intensified using a larger reinforcement content, accelerating the coupled motion of fluid and solid particles. The circular flows appeared when the TiC content reached 5.0 wt. % and the larger-sized circular flows were present as the reinforcement content increased to 7.5 wt. %. The experimental study on surface morphologies and microstructures on the polished sections of SLM-processed TiC/AlSi10Mg nanocomposite parts was performed. A considerably dense and smooth surface free of any balling effect and pore formation was obtained when the reinforcement content was optimized at 5.0 wt. %, due to the sufficient liquid formation and moderate Marangoni flow. Novel ring-structured reinforcing particulates were tailored because of the combined action of the attractive effect of centripetal force and repulsive force, which was consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract:The hydrogenation reaction of NaH+1/3Al+1/2H2↔1/3Na3AlH6+2/3Al+H2↔NaAlH4 was studied in the temperature range of 80–170°C and the pressure range of 8–12MPa. It was found that under the pressure of 12MPa, an increase in the hydrogenation temperature from 100 to 170°C causes a reduction in the amount of absorbed hydrogen. Under the constant pressure of 10MPa, the initial rate of hydrogenation increases when the temperature increases from 80 to 120°C, and reaches an optimum at 120°C; further increase in temperature leads to a decrease in the rate. It was also observed that at a constant temperature, the rate increases with the increase of applied hydrogen pressure. The cycling studies of titanium doped NaAlH4 have shown that the initial capacity was about 3.6wt.%, but after a few dehydrogenation–rehydrogenation cycles, the capacity decreases to 3.0wt.%. And this capacity was retained with no further deterioration in the following consecutive 100 cycles. However, the rates of the two-step dehydrogenation processes were found to reduce kinetically with the ongoing cycling.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation process of Ti and Zr doped alanates was studied by means of the thermal gravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TC-DTA) and isothermal dehydrogenation kinetics measurement. With using transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with an electron energy loss spectrometer (EELS), we observed the distribution of Ti element on a particle of the Ti doped material. The kinetic measurement showed that: (i) Dehydrogenation of Na3AlH6 proceeds much slower than that of NaAlH4, when the former is observed as a second step of the two step consecutive dehydrogenation of Ti doped NaAlH4. (ii) But if Na3AlH6 is doped directly with Ti, the dehydrogenation rate matches that of NaAlH4. (iii) The activation enthalpies of both Ti doped NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 are 100 kJ(.)mol(-1), and those of both Zr doped NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 are 135 kJ(.)mol(-1). These findings imply that the rate determinig step is not related to the cleavage of Al-H bonding, which must be sensitive to whether the species involved is [AlH4](-) or [AlH6](3-), but to a long range phenomenon, such as the diffusion of the atom in the particle. The TEM-EELS observation showed that the Ti element was distributed on the surface of the particle of doped material.

Abstract:Due to TiAl alloys' excellent properties, TiAl alloys have received widespread attention from researchers. However, the high energy consumption and lengthy process of traditional preparation methods have always limited the large-scale application of TiAl alloys. This article develops a new method for preparing TiAl-based alloy powder via the magnesium thermal reduction of TiO2 in AlCl3-KCl molten salt. In this study, the proportion of AlCl3&KCl molten salts was determined. We conducted phase analysis on the final product by studying the changes in temperature and time. It was found that the TiAl3 alloy powder could be obtained by being kept at 750 °C for 2 h, with an oxygen content of 3.91 wt%. The reaction process for the entire experiment was determined through thermodynamic calculations and experimental analysis, and the principles of the reduction process are discussed.

Abstract:To enhance high-temperature oxidation resistance, Al was introduced into lamellar porous Ti 3 SiC 2 , reducing wall porosity from 16% to 7%, signifying wall densification. DFT calculations revealed that Al substitution for Si in the silicon layer caused lattice distortion, raising lattice parameter (d) from 0.2278 to 0.2289 nm, and disrupting energy, weakening bonds and reducing fracture energy absorption. Consequently, diffusion activation energy dropped from 370 kJ/mol to 230 kJ/mol, significantly impacting high-temperature stability. Yet, Al doping improved wall and oxide film densification, lowering the oxidation rate from 0.0097 to 0.0073 mg 2 /cm 4 ·h, leading to remarkable high-temperature electromagnetic shielding with SSE of 71.1 dB.

Abstract:TiC-doped NaAlH 4 complex hydride was prepared by hydrogenating of ball-milled NaH/Al mixture in the presence of 5 mol% TiC powder, and its hydrogen storage behaviors and microstructure were investigated. It is found that TiC is a good catalyst for the reversible hydriding/dehydriding process of NaAlH 4 at moderate temperatures by reducing the decomposition temperature and improving the hydriding/dehydriding kinetics. The hydrogen desorption capacity of 5 mol% TiC-doped NaAlH 4 is 4.6 wt% at 165 °C and its average dehydriding rate in the first 30 min reaches 0.107 wt%/min. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the size of crystal grains of the composites is reduced by ball-milling, and is then increased rapidly in the first hydriding–dehydriding cycle. Scanning electron micrographs represent that the particle size of the ball-milled composites is quite even and averages around 50 nm. However, it changes into a widely distributed one ranging from 50 nm to 1 μm in the subsequent hydriding–dehydriding cycles. DSC measurement indicates that the doping of TiC can lower the dehydriding temperatures of sodium aluminum hydride.

Abstract:High dense Na–β″-Al2O3 electrolyte materials have been synthesized by solid state reaction with boehmite, magnesia, sodium carbonate and titania as the starting materials. The effects of TiO2 doping percentage on the properties and microstructures of the prepared samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scan electron microscope (SEM), three point bending and ionic conductivity tests. The results indicated that both the relative densities and the phase purities of the samples could effectively improved after doping with TiO2. The proper doping amount of TiO2 was to form the transient liquid phase during the sintering process, which would reduce the steric effect and accelerate the diffusivity. Moreover, the mechanical performance of the obtained sample increased to the value above 280MPa as the doping amount of TiO2 was larger than 1wt%. As to the electric properties, if the doping amount was less than 1wt%, the grain boundary resistivity reduced as the density increased, so the ionic conductivity of the Na–β″-Al2O3 was enhanced obviously. However, when the doping amount was above 1wt%, the ionic conductivity was deteriorated because of the increased resistivity caused by the broadening grain size.

Abstract:Ti-Ni shape memory alloys (SMA) are used extensively in the field of orthopedics owing to their unique physical and mechanical features, excellent corrosion resistance, and good biocompatibility in the human body environment. This study aims to investigate how milling time affects the characteristics of Ti-Ni alloys which were synthesized with equal atomic percentages by using a high-energy ball milling type (Planetary Micro Mill Pulverisette P7, Fritsch GmbH, Germany) under varying milling periods (2, 6, 12, and 18 h). The duration of the grinding process refines the grain and diminishes the material's porosity, improving the material's physical and structural characteristics as well as its photocatalytic activity. The milled powders of Ti50-Ni50 alloys underwent characterization employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) associated with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and spectrophotometery of visible and ultraviolet light (UV–VIS) to measure the solution absorbance of methylene blue (MB). The results revealed that the milling process influences the particle size and shape of powders, where the proportion of fine particles increased with increasing grinding times from 2 to 18 h due to severe deformation and fracturing. The crystallite size was reduced, and the microstrain increased, attaining values of 29 nm and 0.99%, respectively. In addition, the pores of samples were decreased to 10 nm at higher milling times. Furthermore, solutions of MB containing powders of Ti50-Ni50 milled at 18 h exhibited good photocatalytic activity with a degradation rate value of 93.23% after 60 min of irradiation time because of a greater surface area. The improved properties of Ti50-Ni50 alloys make them clinically useful for biomedical implantation in humans. Plus, they are considered to be effective materials for photocatalytic applications.

Mixtures Doped with Titanium Based Catalysts

Abstract:We investigate the hydrogen storage properties of the mixed complex hydride LiBH4-NaAlH4 system, both undoped and doped with a TiCl3 additive. The mixed system is found to initiate a transformation to LiBH4-NaAlH4 after ball-milling, and the doped system is found to have a significant lower hydrogen release temperature compared to the undoped system and that of titanium doped LiAlH4 and NaAlH4 systems. Three dehydrogenation steps with a total of 3.5 wt % released hydrogen are observed for samples with a 2:3 molar ratio, when heated to ∼210 °C under a constant heating ramp in a 1 bar helium atmosphere. A slow hydrogen release is also observed at room temperature in the freshly ball-milled powders due to decomposition of the formed LiAlH4. X-ray powder diffraction spectra shows that the first dehydrogenation step is completed after a couple of days at room temperature. LiNa2AlH6 is found in NaAlH4 rich mixtures at higher temperature, and this phase is found to reversibly discharge and recharge hydrogen at 80 bar and 180 °C.

Abstract:TiC-doped NaAlH4 complex hydrides were prepared by hydrogenation of ball-milled NaH/Al mixture with x TiC powder (x = 0, 5%, 8%, 10%, mole fraction). The effects of TiC catalyst content on the absorption/desorption behaviors of the samples were investigated. The results show that TiC can improve the hydriding/dehydriding kinetics of sodium aluminum hydride, the hydriding rate of the sample increases with increasing TiC content. It is found that the TiC-doped NaAlH4 composites have a relatively good cyclic stability. The composite doped with 10% TiC maintains steadily about 4.5% (mass fraction) hydrogen absorption capacity as against about 3.8% (mass fraction) hydrogen desorption capacity over 8 cycles. The particle sizes of the TiC-doped NaAlH4 composites can be reduced to 50-100 nm, which may play an important role in improving the hydriding/dehydriding kinetics.
In-Situ Precipitated Needle Like Nanocrystalline β-Ti Reinforced Porous Titanium Alloy via Molten Salt Electrolysis

Abstract:Fabricating porous active metals through chemical dealloying poses challenges due to their reactivity and vulnerability to oxidation in aqueous solutions. The objective of this study was to create micron-sized porous Ti alloy by utilizing the Ti–Mo system as a precursor alloy for chemical dealloying. The impact of phase composition and initial microstructure of the precursor alloys (Tix at% Mo100 − x at%, x = 60 ~ 70) on the morphology of the resulting porous Ti alloy was systematically investigated. To improve the mechanical strength and minimize oxidized phases during the dealloying process, a molten salt electrolysis (MSE) method was employed. The strengthening mechanism of MSE on porous Ti alloys encompassed three key aspects. Firstly, it effectively reduced the presence of oxidized phases, thereby eliminating surface defects. Secondly, MSE facilitated grain growth and eliminated voids and cracks at the grain boundaries, leading to enhanced mechanical properties. Thirdly, the involvement of a secondary phase contributed to the overall strengthening mechanism. Following MSE treatment, the oxygen content in the porous Ti alloy decreased from over 13 to 5 at%, and needle-like nanocrystalline β-Ti precipitates formed within the ligament structure. The accumulation and aggregation of compression-induced dislocations at the grain boundaries of the precipitated phase further improved the mechanical properties. In summary, this work presents an innovative approach to fabricating porous Ti alloy with low oxygen content, high strength, and adjustable microstructure. It elucidates the strength enhancement mechanism by MSE, providing insights for future materials development and applications. Graphic abstract

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) technique was used to fabricate in situ Ti-6Al-4V+TiB titanium matrix composite (TMC) samples by addition of sub-micron TiB 2 ceramic particles in Ti-6Al-4V powder. The TMC samples were further subjected to annealing treatment at 900 °C for 30 minutes in an inert atmosphere. The influence of annealing treatment on the microstructure development was characterized using optical microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The addition of TiB 2 (0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 wt.%) induces drastic changes in the morphology of the as-built TMC samples. After annealing, a complete phase transformation occurred in pure Ti-6Al-4V alloy to lamellar shaped alpha and globular beta phase. In TMC samples, the increase in the weight fraction of TiB 2 ceramic particles resulted in substantial grain refinement; however, grain coarsening was observed upon annealing treatment. Refinement in microstructure was associated with pinning effect of TiB whiskers. Coarsening of TiB whiskers also occurred with predominant increase in length as compared to width. Development in tribological performance was attributed to microstructure refinement.
