Abstract:The first example of copper-mediated oxidative annulation of phenols and unactivated internal alkynes to afford benzofuran derivatives was reported. Various phenols and unactivated internal alkynes were successfully employed. Mechanistic studies disclosed a new strategy on annulations of alkynes with phenols through reversible electrophilic carbocupration of phenol followed by alkyne insertion and cyclization.

Abstract:Regioselective synthesis of polysubstituted benzofurans using a copper catalyst and molecular oxygen from phenols and alkynes in a one-pot procedure has been reported. The transformation consists of a sequential nucleophilic addition of phenols to alkynes and oxidative cyclization. A wide variety of phenols and alkynes can be used in the same manner.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrated a benign and metal-free [3+2]-cycloaddition reaction using simple and readily available phenols and styrenes as substrates and sodium persulfate as an inexpensive and environmentally friendly oxidant for the direct synthesis of dihydrobenzofurans. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of corsifuran A in a single step.

Abstract:An efficient copper-promoted hydration reaction and its application in the synthesis of benzo[b]furan and benzo[b]thiophene derivatives is presented starting from readily available 2-fluorophenylacetylene derivatives. The key annulation step involves the hydration of the C-F bond of 2-fluorophenylacetylene derivatives followed by an intramolecular annulation to afford benzo[b]furan and benzo[b]thiophene derivatives. Moreover, structurally important 2,2'-bisbenzofuran scaffolds are provided in good yields.

Abstract:We have developed a method for the highly diastereo- and enantioselective construction of 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans bearing tetrasubstituted carbon stereocenters by means of annulation reactions between carbenes and 2-iminyl- or 2-acyl-substituted phenols through catalysis by readily accessible copper(I)/bisoxazoline catalysts under mild conditions. These reactions feature a unique mechanism in which the copper catalyst serves a dual function: first it reacts with the diazo compound to generate a metal carbene, and second, upon formation of an oxonium ylide, it acts as a Lewis acid to activate the imine or ketone for diastereo- and enantioselective cyclization.
