Abstract:The conventional wisdom of fracture mechanics is to assume that the stress field ahead of a crack-tip can be well characterized by fracture parameters which can thus be applied to various component/specimen of different geometries and defect/crack sizes subjected to different loading modes. However, the deviation of the stress-strain field ahead of crack-tip from the near-field solution has been found to occur inevitably. Constraint effect should hence be considered in the structural integrity assessment. Under the creep condition, creep crack growth (CCG) is one of the main failure modes. Experimental investigations revealed that constraint effect on creep crack growth rate can be either considerable or negligible depending on deformation, fracture mechanisms and load levels. The understanding of the constraint effect on CCG in the past three decades were summarized in the chapter. Experimental results of the constraint effect on CCG rate are provided case by case. Different creep fracture constraint parameters are discussed and comparied, aiming at a unfied constraint parameter and an accurate safety assessment of defective components at elevated temperatures.
