Abstract:Laser forming is an emerging manufacturing process capable of producing either uncomplicated and complicated shapes by employing a concentrated heating source. The heat source movement creates local softening, and a plastic strain will be induced during the rise of temperature and the subsequent cooling. This contactless forming process may be used for the simple bending of sheets and tubes or fabrication of doubly-curved parts. Different studies have been carried out over recent years to understand the mechanism of forming and predicting the bending angle. The analysis of process parameters and search for optimized manufacturing conditions are among the most discussed topics. This review describes the main recent findings in the laser forming of single and multilayer sheets, composite and fiber-metal laminate plates, force assisted laser bending, tube bending by laser beam, the optimization technique implemented for process parameters selection and control, doubly-curved parts, and the analytical solutions in laser bending. The main focus is set to the researches published since 2015.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>By inducing work hardening and beneficial compressive residual stresses in near‐surface regions, laser shock peening (LSP) improves the fatigue performance of many metallic components. In recent years, LSP has found many new applications in emerging fields: additive manufacturing, ceramics, and metallic glasses. In addition, innovative process development based on LSP has been reported, which includes warm LSP, cryogenic LSP, electropulsing‐assisted LSP, laser peening without coating, femotosecond LSP, and laser peen forming. Herein, a comprehensive review of the LSP process with a focus on the novel applications and innovative process development is aimed for. The history of LSP with key events is briefly reviewed. The fundamental mechanisms of LSP, including the generation of shockwaves by a high‐energy pulsed laser, the generation of compressive residual stresses by the shockwave, and its effect on crack propagation, and how LSP induces grain refinement are also discussed. The effects of compressive residual stresses and grain refinement on the mechanical properties of metallic materials are reviewed. Recent developments in LSP, such as innovative process development based on LSP and its novel applications, are discussed. Finally, the current challenges the LSP technology faces and its future directions are also discussed.</p></section>

Abstract:Recently, the increasing interest in wearable technology for personal healthcare and smart virtual/augmented reality applications has led to the development of facile fabrication methods. Lasers have long been used to develop original solutions to such challenging technological problems due to their remote, sterile, rapid, and site-selective processing of materials. In this review, recent developments in relevant laser processes are summarized under two separate categories. First, transformative approaches, such as for laser-induced graphene, are introduced. In addition to design optimization and the alteration of a native substrate, the latest advances under a transformative approach now enable more complex material compositions and multilayer device configurations through the simultaneous transformation of heterogeneous precursors, or the sequential addition of functional layers coupled with other electronic elements. In addition, the more conventional laser techniques, such as ablation, sintering, and synthesis, can still be used to enhance the functionality of an entire system through the expansion of applicable materials and the adoption of new mechanisms. Later, various wearable device components developed through the corresponding laser processes are discussed, with an emphasis on chemical/physical sensors and energy devices. In addition, special attention is given to applications that use multiple laser sources or processes, which lay the foundation for the all-laser fabrication of wearable devices.
Preliminary Studies on Strain Rate Dependence of Laser Shock Forming

Abstract:The effect of rate dependence on laser shock forming(LSF) was investigated with experimental and numerical simulation.The displacement field of the treated brass and stainless steel specimens was examined and analyzed.ABAQUS was used to simulate LSF.The results show the maximum displacements of the brass and metal sheets are 0.462 mm and 0.076 mm respectively.For the rate dependent material,the deformation of the simulation matches the experimental results quite well if the rate dependence is considered.This research has laid foundation for the wide application of the LSF technology.

Abstract:Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is a hybrid cutting process in which a laser beam is used to heat and soften the workpiece locally in front of the cutting tool edge. The rapid temperature rise at the shear zone reduces the yield strength and work hardening of the workpiece, which makes the plastic deformation of difficult-to-machine materials easier during machining. LAM provides a reduction in the cutting forces/specific cutting energy, longer tool life, better surface integrity, and high productivity over traditional cutting. This paper presents the technical characteristics, material removal mechanism and the application of machining hard-to-machine material in LAM. The latest development of LAM and future scope are summarized in this paper.

Abstract:Laser forming is achieved by plastic deformation induced by thermal stresses resulting from rapid nonlinear thermal cycles. Unlike mechanical forming, the process requires no hard tooling or external forces and thus there is no spring-back effect. A number of mechanisms have been identified to explain the thermo-mechanical behaviour in laser forming, accounting for various part geometries, laser process conditions and many materials. Although these interactions of thermal and mechanical factors are not yet fully understood, with increased knowledge of the laser forming process, the process offers significant potential value to industry such as aerospace, shipbuilding, microelectronics, etc. Modelling of the laser forming process may help to provide a basis for determining the heating pattern required, therefore making application of laser forming feasible and profitable to industry. This review describes a number of recent developments and new techniques in modelling of laser forming, including analytical models, numerical simulations and various empirical models.

Abstract:<p>In industries such as aerospace, petrochemistry and automobile, many parts of different machines are under environment which shows high temperature and high pressure, and have their proneness to wear and corrosion. Therefore, the wear resistibility and stability under high temperature need to be further improved. Nowadays, Laser cladding (LC) is widely used in machine parts repairing and functional coating due to its advantages such as lower dilution rate, small heat-affected zone and good metallurgical bonding between coating and substrate. In this paper, LC is introduced in detail from aspects of process simulation, monitoring and parameter optimization. At the same time, the paper gives a comprehensive review over LC material system as high entropy alloys (HEAs), amorphous alloy and single crystal alloy have been gradually showing their advantages over traditional metal materials in LC. In addition, the applications of LC in functional coatings and in maintenance of machine parts are also outlined. Also, the existing problems and the development trend of LC is discussed then.</p>

Abstract:Laser-assisted machining in-situ technology is an emerging hot spot in the processing field. The technology not only has an excellent performance in processing Cu, Al, and other tough metals but also is an effective method for surface treatment and microfabrication of difficult-to-process materials such as engineering ceramics, high-temperature alloys, and composite materials. And technology has an excellent performance in improving machining accuracy, surface quality, tool life, machining efficiency, and so on. Firstly, the principle of the technology is explained, followed by the introduction of the research progress of scholars at home and abroad in recent years from the perspective of laser in-situ auxiliary multiple different processing methods, finally, the existing problems and future development direction of the technology is summarized and prospects.

Abstract:<p>This review discusses the main factors of the formation mechanism of the laser fabricated nano-materials, focusing on the precision microstructures, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, also the research status. Laser nano-technology (LNT), that is, the precision nano-particle/structure/texture can be produced in the light alloys under an action of the laser beam, which can effectively improve the properties of the light alloys, mainly including the laser cladding (LC), selective laser melting (SLM) and laser shock peening (LSP) nano-technology. The trend of development of LNT is discussed, which includes: the preparation of the nano-gradient, the amorphous, the quasicrystalline light materials, the smart nano-materials, the connection of LNT and other techniques. Taking full use of the opportunities for the nano-materials produced by LNT to enlarge the applications of the light alloys also overcome the series of the scientific/technological issues in the coming future.</p>

Abstract:Laser forming is a means of processing materials in a novel manner. The mechanical properties of specimens after laser forming are investigated. By tension tests, the tension properties are analyzed to establish Ramberg–Osgood constitutive equations under different laser processing parameters. Experimental data show that the yield strength and tensile strength are improved after laser forming, while the elongation percentage is reduced. Based on the distribution of residual stresses as well as residual strains after the laser forming process, the fatigue life under different laser processing parameters is studied using low-cycle fatigue tests. The residual compressive plastic strain is the most important reason for improving the fatigue life of low carbon steel after laser forming. The fatigue fracture mechanism is shown through the analysis of macro-fracture and micro-fracture using the scanning electronic microscope.

Abstract:Traditional forming process of sheet metal is realized with Die and Mould, this technique lacks flexibility and used in the Volume production. The forming process of sheet metal based on laser shock waves is a novel and developing technique. Laser shock forming (LSF) and Laser peen forming (LPF) are two different forming process of sheet metal, both of them are based on a mechanical effect of shock waves induced by laser. In this paper, after introducing the mechanism of laser shock wave generating, these two forming process and technique feature are analyzed and compared, some research progresses are presented. It is indicated that forming technique based on laser shock waves are of high-flexible and great potential application in the fields of plastic forming of sheet metal.

Abstract:Due to its exceptional advantages, such as high specific strength, high specific modulus, and good fatigue resistance, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is frequently utilized in aerospace, aviation, automotive, rail transportation, and other areas. Composite components typically need to be joined and integrated. In the equipment manufacturing industry, the most used methods for processing composite components are cutting, drilling, and surface treatment. The quality of CFRP is significantly impacted by traditional mechanical processing, causing flaws like delamination, burrs, and tears. Laser processing technology has emerged as a crucial method for processing CFRP for its high quality, non-contact, simple control, and automation features. The most recent research on the laser processing of CFRP is presented in this paper, supporting scientists and engineers who work in the field in using this unconventional manufacturing technique. This paper gives a general overview of the key features of laser processing technology and the numerous machining techniques available. The concepts and benefits of laser processing technology are discussed in terms of the material properties, mode of operation, and laser characteristics, as well as the methods to achieve high efficiency, low damage, and high precision. This paper reviews the research development of laser processing of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics, and a summary of the factors affecting the quality of CFRP laser processing. Therefore, the research content of this article can be used as a theoretical basis for reducing thermal damage and improving the processing quality of laser-processed composite materials, while, on this basis, we analyze the development trend of CFRP laser processing technology.

At the same time, we expect to find the research directions that conform to the future development trends for LAM.

Abstract:With the rapid development in advanced industries, such as microelectronics and optics sectors, the functional feature size of devises/components has been decreasing from micro to nanometric, and even atomic and close-to-atomic scale (ACS) for higher performance, smaller volume and lower energy consumption. By this time, a great many quantum structures are proposed, with not only an extreme scale of several or even single atom, but also a nearly ideal lattice structure with no material defect. It is almost no doubt that such structures play critical role in the next generation products, which shows an urgent demand for the atomic and close-to-atomic scale manufacturing (ACSM). Laser machining is one of the most important approaches widely used in engineering and scientific research. It is high-efficient and applicable for most kinds of materials. Moreover, the processing scale covers a huge range from millimeters to nanometers, and has already touches the atomic level. Laser-material interaction mechanism, as the foundation of laser machining, determines the machining accuracy and surface quality. It becomes much more sophisticated and dominant with a decrease in processing scale, which is systematically reviewed in this article. In general, the mechanisms of laser-induced material removal are classified into ablation, Coulomb explosion and atomic desorption, with a decrease in the scale from above microns to angstroms. The effects of processing parameters on both fundamental material response and machined surface quality are discussed, as well as theoretical methods to simulate and understand the underlying mechanisms. Examples at nanometric to atomic scale are provided, which demonstrate the capability of laser machining in achieving the ultimate precision and becoming a promising approach to ACSM.

Abstract:Laser forming is a flexible sheet metal forming technique, which achieves a desirable shape by non-uniform thermal stress induced by laser beam without hard tooling and external forces. In engineering applications, a singly curved surface is extensively applied in forming parts. To acquire high accurate shape in laser forming, a new design approach is proposed to determinate path planning and process parameters of complicated singly curved shape. This approach mainly includes three steps, curve division, path planning and process parameters determination. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the method, a sine curved plate is processed. The experimental result shows that the proposed approach is valid for complicated singly curved parts.
Laser Direct Forming of Metal Components: Technical Characterizations

Abstract:Laser direct forming experiments were carried out systematically with 316L stainless steel and nickel-base alloy to investigate the technical characterizations deeply and some metal components were fabricated. It is found that, the height of single cladding layer, which was affected by almost all the processing parameters and was quite hard to be precisely controlled,was very important to laser direct forming for not only the accuracy of vertical direction but also the fabrication stability. The variation of the width of single clad, which was mainly affected by laser power, spot diameter and scanning velocity, was similar to that in laser surface melting. The surface quality was another important characterization for laser direct forming and was remarkably affected by oxidation and powder attachment. In order to improve the surface quality, the flow flux of shielding gas should not less than 10l/min.

Abstract:Metal material processing using femtosecond lasers is a useful technique, and it has been widely employed in many applications including laser microfabrication, laser surgery, and micromachining. The basic mechanisms of metal processing using femtosecond lasers are reviewed in this paper and the characteristics and theory of laser processing are considered. In addition to well-known processes, the recent progress relating to metals processing with femtosecond lasers, including metal material drilling, metal ablation thresholds, micro/nano-surface modification, printed circuit board (PCB) micromachining, and liquid metal (LM) processing using femtosecond lasers, is described in detail. Meanwhile, the application of femtosecond laser technology in different fields is also briefly discussed. This review concludes by highlighting the current challenges and presenting a forward-looking perspective on the future of the metal laser processing field.
