Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining has been a promising technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano-structures in various kinds of dielectric materials with unprecedented spatial resolutions as well as flexibility in terms of the geometry and the materials can be processed. This unique capability opens opportunities for fabrication of 3D high-quality (Q) microresonators, which are one of the key elements in modern photonic applications. Here, we review the recent progress in fabrication of high-Q microresonators on glass and crystalline substrates by employing femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate the applications of the fabricated microresonators in generating low-threshold lasers, high-sensitivity chemical sensing and nonlinear optical wavelength conversion.

Abstract:We present our latest progresses on the development of integrated photonic devices as well as microfluidic chips of unprecedented characteristics and performances using femtosecond laser micromachining. We demonstrate ultra-high Q microresonators in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), on-chip micro-laser and waveguide amplifier, and high-throughput micro-chemical reactor. The achievements are the result of persistent effort on improving the precision and efficiency in ultrafast laser processing.

Abstract:The machining of micro/nano periodic surface structures using a femtosecond laser has been an academic frontier and hotspot in recent years. With an ultrahigh laser fluence and an ultrashort pulse duration, femtosecond laser machining shows unique advantages in material processing. It can process almost any material and can greatly improve the processing accuracy with a minimum machining size and heat-affected zone. Meanwhile, it can fabricate a variety of micro/nano periodic surface structures and then change a material's surface performance dramatically, such as the material's wetting performance, corrosive properties, friction properties, and optical properties, demonstrating great application potential in defense, medical, high-end manufacturing, and many other fields. In recent years, the research is gradually deepening from the basic theory to optimization design, intelligent control, and application technology. Nowadays, while focusing on metal structure materials, especially on stainless steel, research institutions in the field of micro and nano manufacturing have conducted systematic and in-depth experimental research using different experimental environments and laser-processing parameters. They have prepared various surface structures with different morphologies and periods with sound performance, and are one step closer to many civilian engineering applications. This paper reviews the study of micro/nano periodic surface structures and the performance of stainless steel machined using a femtosecond laser, obtains the general evolution law of surface structure and performance with the femtosecond laser parameters, points out several key technical challenges for future study, and provides a useful reference for the engineering research and application of femtosecond laser micro/nano processing technology.

Abstract:Able to precise control and manipulate materials' states at micro/nano-scale level, femtosecond laser micro/nano processing technology has underwent tremendous development over the past three decades. Free-forming three-dimensional microscale functional devices and inducing fascinating and unique physical or chemical phenomena have granted this technology with powerful versatility that no other technology can match. As this technology advances rapidly in various fields of application, some key challenges have emerged and remain to be urgently addressed. This review firstly introduces the fundamental principles for understanding how femtosecond laser pulses interact with materials and the associated unique phenomena in section 2. Then micro/nano-fabrication in transparent materials by femtosecond laser processing is presented in section 3. Thereafter, several high efficiency/throughput fabrication methods as well as pulse-shaping techniques are listed in section 4, and section 5 reviews four-dimensional and nanoscale printing realized by femtosecond laser processing technology. A special attention is paid to the heterogeneous integration of functional materials enabled by femtosecond laser processing in section 6. Several intriguing examples of three-dimensional functional micro-devices created by femtosecond laser based manufacturing methods such as microfluidics, lab-on-chip, micro-optics, micro-mechanics, micro-electronics, micro-bots and microbiodevices are reviewed in section 7. Finally, a summary of the review and a perspective are proposed to explore the challenges and future opportunities for further betterment of femtosecond laser micro/nano processing technology.

Abstract:Abstract Femtosecond laser fabrication has grown to be a major method of extreme manufacturing because of the extreme energy density and spatial and temporal scales of femtosecond lasers. The physical effects and the mechanism of interaction between femtosecond lasers and materials are distinct from those in traditional processes. The nonlinear and nonequilibrium effects of the interaction have given rise to new concepts, principles, and methods, such as femtosecond pulse durations are shorter than many physical/chemical characteristic times, which permits manipulating, adjusting, or interfering with electron dynamics. These new concepts and methods have broad application prospects in micro/nanofabrication, chemical synthesis, material processing, quantum control, and other related fields. This review discusses the cutting-edge theories, methods, measurements, and applications of femtosecond lasers to micro/nano-manufacturing. The key to future development of femtosecond laser manufacturing lies in revealing its fabrication mechanism from the electronic level and precisely regulating the electronic dynamics.

This review first traces the progression from early ruby lasers to modern titanium–sapphire lasers, highlighting breakthroughs like Kerr-lens mode-locking and chirped pulse amplification. It also examines the interaction mechanisms between ultrafast pulses and various materials, including metals, dielectrics, and semiconductors. Applications of ultrafast lasers in microstructure processing techniques are detailed, such as drilling, cutting, surface ablation, and nano welding, demonstrating the versatility and precision of the technology. Additionally, it covers femtosecond laser direct writing for optical waveguides and the significant advancements in imaging and precision measurement. Abstract:With the advancement of micro/nanotechnology, precise control of the interaction between light and matter at the micro/nanoscale is crucial for successful material processing and surface functionalization. Ultrafast lasers with ultra-short pulses have gained attention due to their high spatial resolution and low thermal damage, enabling extremely smooth and precise machining on various metal surfaces. At the same time, shorter pulse nanosecond lasers, which have a wider application range, strike a balance between achieving high-precision microfabrication and mitigating adverse thermal effects caused by millisecond lasers. By adjusting laser processing parameters, it is possible to create large-scale micro/nanostructures with complex shapes, delicate textures, and special functionalities, applicable in fields such as optics, electronics, and biomedicine. Short/ultrafast pulse laser fabrication technology opens up more possibilities and prospects for the realization of diverse functional micro/nanostructures. This comprehensive review provides an overview of the interaction mechanisms between short/ultra-short-pulse laser micro/nanoprocessing and materials. By integrating theoretical models such as the two-temperature model and the Drude–Lorentz model, along with comprehensive numerical simulation methods, a brief summary of the ablation behavior of metal surfaces under short/ultra-short-pulse lasers is provided. Furthermore, we delve into the controllability of microstructures, laser-induced periodic surface structures at the nanoscale, and other types of nanostructures under different processing conditions. Thorough analysis and discussion are conducted from multiple perspectives, including surface topography and functional impacts. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the functionalization of metal surfaces with micro/nanostructures, and an in-depth investigation and review are conducted in areas such as surface wettability, bio-inspired surfaces, optical diffraction, and advanced biomedicine. Finally, the advantages and limitations of laser texturing processing techniques are discussed, and the future development of functionalized metal surfaces is anticipated.

Abstract:The past decade has seen growing research interest in developing novel fabrication methodologies for metallic micro/nanostructures toward the rational design and integration of 0D to 3D metallic configurations. Among the various fabrication techniques, femtosecond‐laser direct writing has emerged as a prominent approach to reach this goal and greatly facilitates the development of metallic micro/nanostructure‐enabled applications. Here, a series of femtosecond‐laser‐mediated fabrication strategies, including the two‐photon reduction of metal ions, template‐assisted metal coating and metal filling, photodynamic assembly of metal nanoparticles, and selective nanoparticle sintering, are summarized. Additionally, abundant applications in microelectronics, metamaterials, near‐field optics, microfluidics, micromechanics, and microsensors are introduced in detail. Current challenges and future perspectives in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser processing technology has offered a wide range of opportunities in micro/nano fabrication and other fields such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, energy science, and photonics due to its controllable processing precision, diverse processing capabilities, and broad material adaptability. The processing abilities and applications of the ultrafast laser still need more exploration. In the field of material processing, controlling the atomic scale structure in nanomaterials is challenging. Complex effects exist in ultrafast laser surface/interface processing, making it difficult to modulate the nanostructure and properties of the surface/interface as required. In the ultrafast laser fabrication of micro functional devices, the processing ability needs to be improved. Here, we review the research progress of ultrafast laser micro/nano fabrication in the areas of material processing, surface/interface controlling, and micro functional devices fabrication. Several useful ultrafast laser processing methods and applications in these areas are introduced. With various processing effects and abilities, the ultrafast laser processing technology has demonstrated application values in multiple fields from science to industry.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining provides high precision and less thermal diffusion in surface structuring as a result of the ultrashort temporal duration and ultrahigh peak intensity of the femtosecond laser pulses. To increase the throughput of surface patterning, the focal spot size can be expanded with loose focusing, which, however, could lead to nonlinear self-focusing of the pulses when the pulses propagate in air. We solve the problem by use of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses for ablation of metal surfaces, which gives rise to improved surface quality as compared with that obtained with the conventional focusing scheme.

Abstract:As a laser technology, the femtosecond laser is used in biomedical fields due to its excellent performance—its ultrashort pulses, high instantaneous power, and high precision. As a surface treatment process, the femtosecond laser can prepare different shapes on metal surfaces to enhance the material's properties, such as its wear resistance, wetting, biocompatibility, etc. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) are a common phenomenon that can be observed on almost any material after irradiation by a linearly polarized laser. In this paper, the current research state of LIPSSs in the field of biomedicine is reviewed. The influence of laser parameters (such as laser energy, pulse number, polarization state, and pulse duration) on the generation of LIPSSs is discussed. In this paper, the applications of LIPSSs by femtosecond laser modification for various purposes, such as in functional surfaces, the control of surface wettability, the surface colonization of cells, and the improvement of tribological properties of surfaces, are reviewed.

Abstract:As a noncontact strategy with flexible tools and high efficiency, laser precision engineering is a significant advanced processing way for high-quality micro-/nanostructure fabrication, especially to achieve novel functional photoelectric structures and devices. For the microscale creation, several femtosecond laser fabrication methods, including multiphoton absorption, laser-induced plasma-assisted ablation, and incubation effect have been developed. Meanwhile, the femtosecond laser can be combined with microlens arrays and interference lithography techniques to achieve the structures in submicron scales. Down to nanoscale feature sizes, advanced processing strategies, such as near-field scanning optical microscope, atomic force microscope, and microsphere, are applied in femtosecond laser processing and the minimum nanostructure creation has been pushed down to ~25 nm due to near-field effect. The most fascinating femtosecond laser precision engineering is the possibility of large-area, high-throughput, and far-field nanofabrication. In combination with special strategies, including dual femtosecond laser beam irradiation, ~15 nm nanostructuring can be achieved directly on silicon surfaces in far field and in ambient air. The challenges and perspectives in the femtosecond laser precision engineering are also discussed.

Abstract:With the rapid development in advanced industries, such as microelectronics and optics sectors, the functional feature size of devises/components has been decreasing from micro to nanometric, and even atomic and close-to-atomic scale (ACS) for higher performance, smaller volume and lower energy consumption. By this time, a great many quantum structures are proposed, with not only an extreme scale of several or even single atom, but also a nearly ideal lattice structure with no material defect. It is almost no doubt that such structures play critical role in the next generation products, which shows an urgent demand for the atomic and close-to-atomic scale manufacturing (ACSM). Laser machining is one of the most important approaches widely used in engineering and scientific research. It is high-efficient and applicable for most kinds of materials. Moreover, the processing scale covers a huge range from millimeters to nanometers, and has already touches the atomic level. Laser-material interaction mechanism, as the foundation of laser machining, determines the machining accuracy and surface quality. It becomes much more sophisticated and dominant with a decrease in processing scale, which is systematically reviewed in this article. In general, the mechanisms of laser-induced material removal are classified into ablation, Coulomb explosion and atomic desorption, with a decrease in the scale from above microns to angstroms. The effects of processing parameters on both fundamental material response and machined surface quality are discussed, as well as theoretical methods to simulate and understand the underlying mechanisms. Examples at nanometric to atomic scale are provided, which demonstrate the capability of laser machining in achieving the ultimate precision and becoming a promising approach to ACSM.

Abstract:Miniaturization,integration,and flexible deformation are the future development trends of optical devices.Meanwhile,optical systems based on integrated micro-optical devices stand out for their low power consumption,fast response,and high information storage capacity.However,current high-precision micro/nano processing methods,such as FIB （Focused Ion Beam） and semiconductor lithography,are far too complex and in lack of flexibility.Femtosecond laser,as a non-contact,high-precision,high-intensity tool for"cold"processing,is particularly favored in micro/nano processing.This review first elucidated the background and mechanism of femtosecond laser micromachining used in optical device.After that,we discussed a number of methods employed to improve the resolution of femtosecond micromachining.Then we listed various advanced processing means based on femtosecond laser and systematically summarized recent representative research developments of femtosecond laser micromachining used in microlens,gratings,optical waveguides,and photonic crystals.Finally,we concluded the challenges and the directions for further development of femtosecond laser machining in the field of micro-optical devices.

Abstract:In recent years, the number of research work on the surface modification of metal glass by laser processing has been increasing, indicating that the interaction between laser and metal glass surface is interesting. Short pulse laser and ultrashort pulse laser processing are the most prominent in this field because of their narrow pulse width, high energy density and short action time with materials. In particular, femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers provide great possibilities for high quality, high efficiency and low loss processing of metal glass. This review summarizes this specific research field, introduces the properties and applications of metallic glass, the processing characteristics of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers, and explains the complex process between laser and metallic glass from a microscopic perspective. In addition, this paper also analyzes the micro-nano structure and macroscopic morphology, and discusses the influence of microscopic mechanism on the structure. On the other hand, the properties of micro-nano structure are also discussed, including mechanical properties, optical properties, wettability and biocompatibility, which is of great significance to the surface functionalization of metallic glass.

Abstract:Abstract With the invention of chirped pulse amplification for lasers in the mid-1980s, high power ultrafast lasers entered into the world as a disruptive tool, with potential impact on a broad range of application areas. Since then, ultrafast lasers have revolutionized laser–matter interaction and unleashed their potential applications in manufacturing processes. With unprecedented short pulse duration and high laser intensity, focused optical energy can be delivered to precisely define material locations on a time scale much faster than thermal diffusion to the surrounding area. This unique characteristic has fundamentally changed the way laser interacts with matter and enabled numerous manufacturing innovations over the past few decades. In this paper, an overview of ultrafast laser technology with an emphasis on femtosecond laser is provided first, including its development, type, working principle, and characteristics. Then, ultrafast laser applications in manufacturing processes are reviewed, with a focus on micro/nanomachining, surface structuring, thin film scribing, machining in bulk of materials, additive manufacturing, bio manufacturing, super high resolution machining, and numerical simulation. Both fundamental studies and process development are covered in this review. Insights gained on ultrafast laser interaction with matter through both theoretical and numerical researches are summarized. Manufacturing process innovations targeting various application areas are described. Industrial applications of ultrafast laser-based manufacturing processes are illustrated. Finally, future research directions in ultrafast laser-based manufacturing processes are discussed.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser material processing has received significant attention due to a growing need for the fabrication of miniaturized devices at micro- and nanoscales. The traditional phenomenological laws, such as Fourier's law of heat conduction, are challenged in the microscale regime and a hyperbolic or dual phase lag model should be employed. During ultrafast laser interaction with metal, the electrons and lattices are not in equilibrium. Various two-temperature models that can be used to describe the nonequilibrium heat transfer are presented. A semi-classical two-step heating model to investigate thermal transport in metals caused by ultrashort laser heating is also presented. The main difference between the semiclassical and the phenomenological two-temperature models is that the former includes the effects of electron drifting, which could result in significantly different electron and lattice temperature response from the latter for higher-intensity and shorter-pulse laser heating. Under higher laser fluence and/or short pulse, the lattice temperature can exceed the melting point and melting takes place. The liquid phase will be resolidified when the lattice is cooled by conducting heat away. Ultrafast melting and resolidification of the thin gold film and microparticles were investigated. At even shorter pulse width, femtosecond laser heating on metals produces a blasting force from hot electrons in the sub-picosecond domain, which exerts on the metal lattices along with the non-equilibrium heat flow. Our work that employs the parabolic two-step heating model to study the effect of the hot-electron blast in multi-layered thin metal films is also presented.

Over the past few years, direct femtosecond laser surface processing has distinguished itself from other conventional laser ablation methods and become one of the best ways to create surface structures at nano‐ and micro‐scales on metals and semiconductors due to its flexibility, simplicity, and controllability in creating various types of nano/microstructures that are suitable for a wide range of applications. Significant advancements were made recently in applying this technique to altering optical properties of metals and semiconductors. As a result, highly absorptive metals and semiconductors were created, dubbed as the “black metals” and “black silicon”. Furthermore, various colors other than black have been created through structural coloring on metals. Direct femtosecond laser processing is also capable of producing novel materials with wetting properties ranging from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic. In the extreme case, superwicking materials were created that can make liquids run vertically uphill against the gravity over an extended surface area. Abstract:Abstract The development of the femtosecond laser (fs laser) with its ability to provide extremely rapid athermal ablation of materials has initiated a renaissance in materials science. Sample milling rates for the fs laser are orders of magnitude greater than that of traditional focused ion beam (FIB) sources currently used. In combination with minimal surface post-processing requirements, this technology is proving to be a game changer for materials research. The development of a femtosecond laser attached to a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (LaserFIB) enables numerous new capabilities, including access to deeply buried structures as well as the production of extremely large trenches, cross sections, pillars and TEM H-bars, all while preserving microstructure and avoiding or reducing FIB polishing. Several high impact applications are now possible due to this technology in the fields of crystallography, electronics, mechanical engineering, battery research and materials sample preparation. This review article summarizes the current opportunities for this new technology focusing on the materials science megatrends of engineering materials, energy materials and electronics.

Abstract:Due to their excellent light transmission, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, and other characteristics, transparent materials have been widely used in emerging industries such as aviation, aerospace, microelectronics, interconnected communication, etc. Compared with the traditional mechanical processing and chemical processing of transparent materials, laser processing, with such characteristics as a high peak power, high energy density, and non-contact processing, has a lot of obvious advantages in processing efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, some of the recent research advancements concerning the laser processing of transparent materials are introduced in detail. Firstly, the basic mechanism of the interaction between the laser and material is briefly summarized on the time scale. The differences in principle between nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond pulse laser processing are analyzed. Then, the main technical means of the nanosecond laser processing of transparent materials are summarized. Next, the main application directions of the ultrafast laser processing of transparent materials are discussed, including the preparation of optical waveguide devices, periodic structure devices, micropores, and microchannels. Finally, this paper summarizes the prospects for the future development of laser processing transparent materials.
