Abstract:The dam of Three Gorges Project is a concrete gravity dam with the crest elevation of 185 m, the maximum height of 181 m and dam axis length of 2 309.5 m. The dam consists of spillway, powerhouse, non-over flow, ship-lift, temporary ship-lock, left diversion wall and longitudinal cofferdam blocks. Some key techniques relating to dam structure design are presented, including hydraulics of flood discharge structure, dam joint design, layout and structural type of penstock, deep anti-sliding stability of dam foundation, reconstruction of temporary ship-lock and closed drainage and pumping of dam foundation.

Collapse Episodes and Remediation of Subsidiary Dam under Construction of Cut-off Walls

Abstract:The main problems faced with earth dams relate to leakage, landslides and cracking, which are in turn related to seepage under and through dams. The construction of the Huangbizhuang reservoir began in 1958, and impounding started in 1960. The main purpose of the Huangbizhuang reservoir is flood control, while secondary uses are irrigation, fish farming, electricity generation and water supply. Many problems have occurred for more than 40 years of its operation. The construction of a seepage cut-off wall for the subsidiary dam began in March 1999. Seven dam collapses occurred during the construction of the cut-off walls. In this research study, the geological conditions of the site are considered, especially during the construction of the joint section of the cut-off wall (∼120 m long) where most of the collapses occurred. The methods for remediating the subsidiary dam of this reservoir are analysed and compared. Details of the collapses are described, and causes and improvement projects are proposed. Finally, suggestions regarding the construction of cut-off walls under such complex conditions are presented.

Abstract:The stage II cofferdam of the Three Gorges project is a high earth-rockfill cofferdam constructed in deep running water. Vertical cutoff wall of plastic concrete was constructed in the dumped filled materials to achieve a cut off. Since there is plenty of decomposed granite which was excavated and abandoned at the project site, but lack of aggregate for plastic concrete, so the new plastic concrete adopted decomposed granite as the aggregate is developed. The local clay is added into the concrete to make it flexible. The uniform design theory and artificial neural network are applied to optimize the mix proportion to meet the design requirements. The proposed plastic concrete was successfully used in Three Gorges Project.

Abstract:The stress and deformation of the phase-Ⅱ cofferdam of the ThreeGorges Project, especially those of the cutoff walls, are the key safety indexes of the cofferdam. This paper studies the stress and deformation of the cofferdam during periods of large scale pumping and running using 3-D finite element method (FEM) analysis according to the actual construction process and the Duncan-Chang E-μ model parameters for different ages of plastic concrete. The calculated results are compared with observed information and it is demonstrated that the cofferdam is and will be safe. The results also provide valuable suggestions for the safe running of the cofferdam.

Abstract:Based on the Duncan E-mu constitutive model used for analyzing soil-rock dams, 3 parameters creep model used for studying creep deformation of soil-rock dams is developed and programmed. According to the measured deformation data of Three Gorges Project's 2nd phase cofferdam of early operation period, calculation parameters used for creep analysis are inverse-analyzed using artificial neural networks. The calculated results indicate that the vertical deformation rule of cofferdam versus time and horizontal deformation rule of cofferdam versus time is different from each other. It is also indicated that the stable time needed for vertical creep displacement is about 6 months after the cofferdam is constructed and the stable time needed for horizontal creep displacement is only 3 months. It also shows that the average creep displacement value of the cofferdam structure is 2-3 times of the initial displacement.
Back Analysis on the Material Parameters of the Second Stage Cofferdam in the Three Gorges Project

Abstract:The second stage cofferdam is one of the most important engineerings of the water conservancy construction in the Three Gorges Project. On the basis of the monitoring data, the sensitivity of material parameters of cofferdam is analyzed. The sensitive parameter to displacement of the cutoff wall can be selected as the parameters for back analysis. According to the tests, the ranges of parameter are confirmed. By use of optimum theory and finite element method, the back analysis program is developed, and the optimum parameter is found. Then, the stress and displacement of the cofferdam are computed and analyzed with the parameters. The results show that the cofferdam is safe in running state, and the computed results accord with monitoring data very well.

Abstract:Closure of the main channel of the Yangtze River for the Three Gorges Project is the largest river closure project in the world. The key to successful closure lies in the safe construction of the closure dyke head. The slump law of the closure dyke in deep water was analyzed theoretically to develop a proceduce for closure of the main Three Gorges channel. The analysis predicts the closure dyke end slump length and volume for different dumped material sizes, slopes and flows. The forecasted results compared well with the actual results for the main channel closure to verify the model for safe river closure.

Abstract:A theoretical model is built to calculate the slump of dike head during process of cofferdam construction in river closure operation. Considering flow scours, the depth of scouring zone is estimated and its effect on slump scale can be determined. Using the theoretical model to analyze stability of cofferdam of The Three Gorge Project, slump length and volume of dike head in the river closure operation are predicted. When closure gap is 1 10-80m wide, slump occurs heavily and the maximum slump length of dike head reaches 7m.

Abstract:For the condition of the Three Gorges project (TGP) has been operated for about thirty years, the separating dike which includes both the ship lock and the ship-lift is recommended as the optimum scheme in the technical design. The intake of ship lock located outside the dike is also suggested in this paper. Problems of the reciprocating flow, water stage fluctuation and the sediment deposition in navigation channel can be well solved in this scheme. A suggestion to raise the third-stage longitudinal cofferdam to elevation 148m will guide the water flow from the right side of the cofferdam to the right powerhouse. The experimental results indicate that it will greatly improve the flow pattern to guarantee the sluicing capacity of the outlet work and the power generation of the project.

Abstract:The concerns over the left dam section stability on potential deep seated rock discontinuities presented one of the key technical problems of the Three Gorges Project. The authors’ research group conducted a field survey that collected nearly 2000 discontinuities and a joint mapping technique with a conclusion that the join persistency ratio along the dominating sear direction is about 70%. The author also found that the ‘method of identical K ’ specified in the code for dam foundation stability analysis is equivalent to the upper bound, or Sarma’s method, thus, a generalized ‘method of identical K ’ is made possible for this project that has composite shape of slip surfaces. Further, stability analyses based on reliability index and partial factors have been performed to provide an in-depth study on this stability analysis problem. The 2D study indicated that for two cases of failure modes the designed section unit 3 satisfies the requirement for allowable factor of safety if the dam and powerhouse are connected to withstand the water pressure. However, if the powerhouse is designed to be separated to the dam, both cases cannot meet the requirement. As an in-depth study, the authors further provide the reliability indices and factors of safety based on the partial factors associated with the above-mentioned cases, giving the same conclusions. The information obtained from the field measured data confirmed the safe performance of the dam.

Load allocation optimization during shutdown of combined-cycle units

Abstract:Aiming at the economic load allocation during the shutdown of combined-cycle units when the gas is not sufficient,an optimization model is established for the shutdown of combined-cycle units,which,based on the analysis of the comprehensive performance of each unit,optimally allocates the gas to each unit to achieve the maximum power generation and ensure the safe shutdown.A calculation program is developed for the shutdown optimization model.The calculative results of a power plant with three combined-cycle units show that,the variation of load-up rate has little effect on the total power generation while the variation of load-down rate has greater effect on the total power generation.When the residual gas is 105 m3,the total power generation of units with optimized shutdown scheme is 28.409 MW·h more than that with normal shutdown scheme,and the increased annual profit is 4.78692 million yuan.

Selection and comparison of construction schemes of concrete gravity dam of Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station

Abstract:Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station is characterized as large scale,long construction period,so the reasonable construction scheme is the key to the quick construction of the dam,which directly related to the construction period and investment.According to the engineering geology and terrain condition and layout and structure of the complex,several construction schemes of concrete dam were studied out and compared.The scheme of adopting 3 translation cable cranes(30 t) and 3 tower belt cranes with proper portal cranes was put forward.The recommended scheme was simulated in the cases of different joint layouts and concrete lift thickness by computers.The results showed that the recommended scheme was reasonable and feasible and can be referred by other similar projects.

Abstract:Maopingxi Rockfill Dam with the asphalt concrete core is an important part of Three Gorges Project. A nonlinear finite element analysis was carried out to examine the probable states of stress-strain in the dam body and its impervious core during the stages of construction and water storage. Both Duncan-Chang's E-μ model and the Tsinghua KG model were employed in the calculation for comparison. Samples of asphalt concrete taken from the bottom part of early constructed core were tested to determine the strength and deformation parameters used in the constitutive models. According to the analysis results, the stress intensities and deformation values were within safety ranges, which testified the rationality and feasibility of the dam design. Suggestions about the construction procedure were presented based on the calculation.
Behavior of Plastic Concrete Diaphragm Walls in Three Gorges Project

Abstract:The high earth and rockfill cofferdam of Three Gorges Project employs plastic concrete diaphragm walls as seepage barrier. In view of the importance and technical difficulty of the cofferdams, the behavior of plastic concrete and the diaphragm walls within the cofferdams was studied. Plastic concrete samples taken from concrete mixer in the dam site were tested by using I arge triaxial testing apparatus in Tsnghua University. Mechanical properties and parameters of Duncan Chang nonlinear elastic model were obtained. Test results indicated that, comparing with ordinary concrete, the materials have the features of low modulus of deformation and favorable impermeability. The analysis of stresses and deformations of the diaphragm walls was performed by means of finite element method (FEM), using parameters obtained from the result of triaxial tests. Calculation results were discussed.

Abstract:Ice blasting with explosives before the spring breakup of river sections is a preventive measure for ice flooding. Based on 496 datasets on ice cover blasting with No. 2 emulsion rock explosives measured in the Mohe reach of the Heilongjiang River from 2015 to 2018, we analyzed the relationships between the blasting-crater diameter and water depth below the ice and between the blasting-crater diameter and the explosive-placement depth below the ice. Further, we analyzed the functional relationship between the explosive weight of a single blast hole and the blasting-crater diameter. Based on the above analysis we proposed an equation to calculate the minimum blasting cost for the same blasting effect. Using a 5-km section of the Heilongjiang River as an example, the proposed optimization method can save ~46% of the total blasting cost while achieving the same blasting effect. Through prototype observations of the Longdao Wharf and the Shengdan Village sections of the Mohe reach, Heilongjiang River, we confirmed that ice blasting can significantly accelerate the melting of ice. Moreover, data records showed that no significant ice-jam flooding has occurred in this section of the Heilongjiang River during the spring ice breakup period in the past five years of consecutive blasting.

Abstract:Analyzing and forecasting the security of hydraulic project in future with the result of observing the prototype of the project at the beginning of construction is an important method to guarantee security in production and operation in hydraulic project.A new approach of displacement back analysis is studied by combining the neural network and evolutionary algorithm.The proposed approach is applied to the displacement back analysis of Maopingxi Rockfill Dam with asphalt concrete core in Three Gorges Project.Based on the field observation results of the stage-I of the dam,a group of Duncan-Chang EB model parameters which can reflect the deformation characteristic of the dam is investigated by back analysis,and then,the deformation characteristic at the end of the construction phase and the reservoir filling phase is forecasted and the possibility of hydraulic fracturing of the core is discussed with total stress method,which offers the guarantee for the safety of Maopingxi Rockfill Dam in the reservoir filling phase.The results indicate that Maopingxi Rockfill Dam will never encounter hydraulic fracturing,as the hydraulic pressure rises after the dam stores water,the core is in safety.
Balancing social, economic and ecological benefits of reservoir operation during the flood season: A case study of the Three Gorges Project, China

Abstract:<div><h2>Abstract</h2>Balancing the multiple purposes of reservoir operation, including the social, economic, and ecological aspects, has become one of the most complicated problems facing the managers and operators worldwide. This paper formulates a detailed mathematical model to optimize the reservoir operation during the flood season, considering the three major operational purposes, i.e. flood control (social purpose), energy production (economic purpose), and management of sediment transport (ecological purpose). The entire formulations conform to a nonlinear programming (NLP) model, which can be solved effectively and efficiently by the Multi-Start Solver from the LINGO software through equivalent transformation. This model is applied to the Three Gorges Project (TGP) in China, which is the world's largest and most complex hydraulic engineering in operation. Three typical flood hydrographs (i.e. dry, normal, and wet scenarios) are selected as model inputs under the three strategies (i.e. design operating rules, increasing the flood control water level (FCWL), and impounding in advance). The trade-offs among these three major operational purposes are quantitatively analyzed. Moreover, phosphorus (P), one of the sediment-associated environmental factors, is introduced for exploring its responses to various scenarios and strategies. Results indicate that a higher fore-bay water level leads to a greater energy production, a smaller flood peak but less sediment and P transports to the downstream. Under the design operating rules, the maximum energy production of the TGP can reach 560, 620, and 699×108 KWh, respectively, in dry, normal, and wet scenarios, corresponding to a flood peak of 25000-27500 m3/s, a sediment load of 1517-1999×104 t, and a P load of 3152-3740×104 kg to the downstream. Whereas, the maximum sediment loads are 2796, 4640, and 5377×104 t, and the maximum P loads are 4021, 5345, and 5784×104 kg, respectively, in dry, normal, and wet scenarios, corresponding to an energy production of 500-588×108 KWh, and a flood peak of 38600-52500 m3/s to the downstream. In terms of achieving the comprehensive benefits of the TGP, impounding in advance is a better choice than both the design operating rules and increasing the FCWL, for it can increase the energy production and the probability of full refill with almost no increase in flood risk to both the dam and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River as well as smaller reduction in the sediment and P transports. The formulated detailed mathematical model is a general one that is applicable to a variety of reservoirs owning multiple operational purposes. Moreover, the achievements gained from this paper will provide important references for the managers and operators.</div>

Abstract:Analysis and evaluation on optimizing design for foundation excavation of super-high arch dams is one of the most important research fields in hydraulic engineering.It is also significant for engineering and scientific study,and for proposing new design criteria of super-high arch dam or revising arch dam design standard.An evaluation criteria,design concept and flow of optimizing of design are discussed for proposing the analysis and estimation system on optimization of design for foundation interface of super-high arch dam.Based on the study progress of analysis and evaluation on optimizing design for foundation excavation of super-high arch dams,a study on optimizing design for excavated foundation surface of Xiluodu Arch Dam is presented.By employing the 3D nonlinear finite element method and 3D geomechanical model test,different excavated foundation surfaces of Xiluodu Arch Dam including feasible scheme,optimizing scheme and comparative scheme,are analyzed and evaluated respectively.The investigation results demonstrated the feasibility of using III1,and III2 typical rock mass as excavated foundation surface of Xiluodu Arch Dam.The optimizing scheme of Xiluodu Arch Dam,compared with the feasible scheme,the excavation of foundation and concrete quantities of dam will decrease about one million cubic meters;as a result,nearly RMB 700 million of investment is saved.
