Abstract:Metal particles can easily be produced in the production and installation of a gas-insulated substation (GIS). The partial discharge (PD) induced by metal particles is a significant security risk to GIS. At present, some related research studies focus on the PD of individual metal particles, but less attention is paid to that of accumulated metal particles. In this study, the PD of the accumulated metal particles was investigated. A defect model of surface free metal particles on a basin-type insulator was set up. Four models of free metal particles of different sizes lying inside the GIS were designed. PD signal waveforms were measured using acoustic emission (AE) sensors. The frequency spectrum characteristics of the PD signal were analyzed, and the PD characteristics under different voltage waveforms were compared. Research results showed that, through the detection of PD signals, the accumulation of free metal particles on the surface of the insulator could be predicted and evaluated to ensure the safe operation of GIS equipment.

Abstract:The measurement of partial discharge (PD) using ultra-high frequency (UHF) method is considered an effective approach to monitor the online condition of the equipment, which is used to facilitate the detection of incipient defects in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). In this paper, in order to assess the severity of PD defects using UHF method, the actual 220-kV GIS were subjected to experimentation. The PD was measured simultaneously by using the UHF method and the IEC60270 measurement technique. The combined measurement has been carried out on different defects in PD test cells, including the floating metal, metallic protrusion, and void in epoxy resin. The inner coupler installed in the GIS tank, and the outer coupler placed outside the spacer, are used to measure the UHF signal. The relationship of the apparent charge and the amplitude of the time-domain signal, and the integral energy from 300 MHz to 1.6 GHz of the signal induced by PD in GIS are analyzed thoroughly. In this way, the severity of PD can be quantified using the UHF signal. In addition, to verify the sensitivity of the UHF detection method, a pulse generator with a rise time of about 500 ps is designed. The GIGRE method for the verification of sensitivity, which is used worldwide, is applied in the experiment. The results of the pulse generator experiment are compared to the results produced by the actual discharge sources, and several possible approaches of improving this method are proposed.

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) monitoring plays an important role in the maintenance of the high voltage (HV) apparatus, such as transformer and gas-insulated substation (GIS). In recent years, the ultra high frequency (UHF) method for PD detection arouses great interest of many researchers because of its high sensitivity and anti-interference capability. The coupling of UHF signal and process of the signal constitute the UHF detection method. There are three key components for the coupling of UHF signal in GIS, including the frequency spectrum characteristics of the PD source, the propagation characteristics in GIS, the coupling style and the capability of the UHF coupler. Many researchers are interested in the recognition algorithm and the analysis procedure of the PD data. But the intrinsic attributes of the partial discharges should attract more attentions because they are the foundation of the UHF detection method. This paper focuses on the intrinsic characteristics of the typical defects in GIS, such as the amplitude of the time-domain signal and frequency spectrum characteristics. Four types of typical partial discharge sources are designed and fabricated, including floating metal, protrusions, particle on the spacer, and void in solid insulation. Several different structure sizes of each defect are applied to ensure the consistency of the results and discover the factors that affect the frequency spectrum characteristics. The results of the study present the essential characteristics of the partial discharge. It can be applied to the design of the coupler and amplifier circuit. In addition, the sensitivity and anti-interference capability of the UHF method are promoted effectively, and it is valuable for calibrating the intensity of PD in GIS.

Abstract:GIS plays an important role in power systems for its maintenance-free and less influence to environmental and industrial conditions.In order to monitor the on-line condition,ultra high frequency(UHF) method is widely used for defect diagnosis of GIS.Therefore,five types of typical partial discharge(PD) sources were designed and fabricated to imitate the defects in GIS online.To distinguish the types of partial discharges,some meaningful parameters behind the UHF signal were extracted and discussed.In general,the conventional phase-resolved partial discharge(PRPD) and pulse sequence analysis method is adopted to discriminate partial discharge,but sometimes it may be less convenient to employ because of the absence of the phase information.Consequently,nine comprehensive parameters realized by processing the UHF pulse magnitude sequence q and time interval sequence Δt are introduced.The parameters can describe exactly the physical characteristics of different partial discharges.By means of the parameters,the pattern classification of PD without employing the phase information of the applied voltage could be achieved.The clustering results by SPSS indicate that there is evident difference in the characteristic coefficients.

Abstract:Metal particles and dirty contaminants on the spacer surface are mainly considered to be the critical factor in sudden flashovers. Understanding the discharge characteristics as well as the detectability of metal particles in the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) will be helpful in improving its safety and reliability. In this paper, a high-sensitivity measurement system based on cross-reference pulse current (PC) and ultra-high-frequency (UHF) methods was established. The PC and UHF signals generated by partial discharges (PDs) of metal particles of different lengths (Φ = 0.5 mm, L = 2, 5, 8, and 10 mm) at different positions on a real spacer surface were studied. The PD characteristics and detectability of the metal particles on the spacer surface were obtained while the detection limitation was also discussed. It is found that under PD test condition, the apparent charge of the PDs is less than 1 pC for particles shorter than 5 mm, and the conventional PD detection method have limitations in detecting these short particles on the spacer surface. Under operation condition, only the apparent charge of particles longer than 8 mm can exceed 1 pC, which means it is difficult to detect the particles shorter than 8 mm in field. However, the result indicates that even the 5 mm long particle will be harmful to the GIS. Meanwhile, it is also been found that the detection sensitivity also has a great influence on the judgement of PD severity. This study is of great interest for understanding the PD characteristics, discharge levels, and detectability of short metal particles on spacer surface.

Abstract:During the transport., assembly., installation., and operation of a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), the introduction of metal particles into the unit is inevitable. The presence of metal particles on the insulator surface is regarded as a critical factor in insulation failures. Thus, a thorough understanding of the characteristics of metal particles on the insulator surface is critical. In this study, a 126-kV GIS experiment platform with a highly sensitive partial discharge (PD) detection system is established. The movement and PD characteristics of micron-sized metal particles on the insulator surface in a 126-kV GIS under long-time alternating current (AC) stress are investigated. The results demonstrate that the PDs triggered by the micron-sized metal particles are weak and sporadic: the apparent charge of most PDs is lower than 1 pC, and the discharge repetition rate can be as low as once per minute. When two metal particles are sufficiently close to each other, they are charged by the PDs between them. This causes the metal particles to move away from each other and tend to be evenly distributed over the entire insulator surface. Some metal particles can move to stay at the triple junction near the grounded enclosure and center conductor or jump to adhere to the surface of center conductor. This study is anticipated to be a beneficial reference for further understanding the movement and PD characteristics of micron-sized metal particles on the GIS insulator surface.

Abstract:The micro cracks resulted from the defective manufacturing technology are common to see in GIS insulators, and many researches have already been done on it. However, most of these studies are based on the simulative defects made in laboratories, rather than on the defects on real made insulators, and thus the equivalence between the experimental condition and the practical situation in real substations cannot been guaranteed. In this paper, partial discharge (PD) experiments are carried out on a real made GIS post insulator with micro crack inside. It is found that the ultra-high frequency (UHF) method is not sensitive to the PD of this type based on the investigation on the PD characteristics, and the mechanism of the PD process is analyzed to explain why it cannot be detected by the UHF method. According to the special PD characteristics the defect displayed, suggestions on the adjustment of the PD frequency band is made in order to find the micro cracks in GIS insulators on-site.

Abstract:The secure operation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is crucial for the bulk power systems, since the failure of GIS apparatus would cause severe interruption of power transforming and power supply at substations. Therefore, the monitoring and maintenance schemes of GIS devices have gradually taken the reliability-based indices into account, of which Partial Discharge (PD) levels in online monitoring are of substantial significance because PD serves as a major cause of insulation break-down. Ultra High Frequency (UHF) method is becoming widely adopted as the major inspection approach for PD in GIS. This paper presents the experiment-based results of the frequency characteristics of UHF signals caused by PD in typical defects using entire GIS operating system platforms. Specifically, the results covered the propagation attenuation of the UHF signals with peak to peak value and cumulative energy through typical structures, including basin-type insulators, L-shaped branch, isolating switches, current transformers, etc. The results serve as substantial criteria for optimal band width selection for high frequency detection, and as notable concerns to improve the sensitivity of UHF detection and the efficiency of online monitoring by effectively locating the external sensors for PD UHF detection.

Abstract:UHF detection of partial discharges (PD) in GIS has been widely used, however its capability of pre-warning the flashover failures of the GIS insulators is limited, causing a big concern on the sensitivity of the UHF method. Experimental investigation is made in this paper on the PDs in an actual GIS supporting insulator with actual defect, which demonstrates that the UHF method does have blind angle in sensitivity. The PD pulses of the supporting insulator change greatly in there steepness, causing great change of the frequency band of the RF signals from the PDs. Most of the PDs have RF signals lower than UHF band, and cannot be detected by UHF method. It means that serious PDs of the GIS insulator could possibly show UHF pulses of small amplitude and small density, and easily be neglected according to the current diagnosing criteria.

Abstract:The metal particle on the insulator surface is considered to be an important factor of insulator flashover. However, for metal particles on the insulator surface, the particles used in previous experiments conducted in an actual gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) are typically centimeter-scale, while research on smaller particles (smaller than 1 cm) has mainly been conducted on downsized models. Obviously, this does not match the field operational condition and cannot provide a satisfactory explanation for the actual flashover phenomenon in the field. In this paper, a high-sensitivity partial discharge (PD) measurement system was established, and the PD characteristics of submillimeter metal particles on the insulator surface of GIS with long-term AC stress was studied. The PD characteristics of submillimeter metal particles on the surface of 126kV GIS insulator were obtained under the operation voltage. The results show that with long-time AC stress, the particles on the insulator surface will gradually tend to be evenly distributed or jump to adhere to the center conductor or move to the triple junction near the center conductor and/or the grounded encloser. The PDs induced by the submillimeter metal particles on the insulator surface are sporadic and weak under operation condition, generally smaller than 1 pC. Hence, it is difficult to detect these defects effectively for the conventional pulse current method and UHF method. This paper further proves that the current PD detection methods have limitations on the detection of micro metal particles on the insulator surface in GIS.
Partial Discharge Detection of Insultors in GIS: Effectiveness and Limitation

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) is not only an important sign of insulation deterioration, but also an important means to detect insulation defects. However, recent operation experience shows that there may be some limitations for the conventional PD detection method, which will result in detection failure. In this paper, a high-sensitivity detection system was established, and the screening tests for the 1100 kV insulators were carried out. Under the PD test condition, the discharge level of good insulators was obtained. Additionally, the experiments of simulated defects and actual defects on the insulator surface were carried out. The results show that under the PD test condition, for the 1100 kV good insulators, the intrinsic PD level is smaller than 0.1 pC. For some micro defects, such as the polish and dirt contaminant on the insulator surface, they will not induce PDs, or even if they provoke PDs, the PDs are only approximately 0.1 pC and even much lower than 0.1 pC. The discharge level of defects such as micro metal particles and cracks on the insulator surface is generally smaller than 1 pC (lower than the conventional detection sensitivity), indicating that there is indeed detection limitation of the conventional detection method. This paper is of great interest for further understanding the intrinsic PD level of good insulators as well as the detection effectiveness of conventional PD detection methods.
Discharge Characteristics and Harmfulness of Millimetre Metal Particles on the 1100 Kv Insulator Surface

Abstract:The metal particle on the insulator surface is considered to be an important factor of insulator failures in the GIS/GIL. Studying the partial discharge (PD) characteristics and harmfulness of metal particles on the insulator surface will be helpful in improving the security and reliability of the equipment. In this study, an experiment platform for the 1100-kV insulator with a high-sensitive PD detection system was established. Then the PD characteristics provoked by metal particles ( D =0.5 mm, L = 0.8, 2, 5, and 8 mm) at different positions on the 1100-kV insulator surface were investigated. The PD level as well as the harmfulness of metal particles on the insulator surface were discussed. The experimental results show that the apparent charge of the PDs provoked by metal particles shorter than 5 mm is lower than 1 pC under routine PD test condition, which will make the traditional PD detection methods ineffective in detecting these small metal particles on the insulator surface. However, it is noted that even the 5-mm-long metal particle will induce flashover and is a serious threat to the equipment. These results are expected to be helpful for condition monitoring and risk assessment of the GIS/GIL equipment.

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) monitoring plays an important role in the online maintenance of the gas insulated switchgear (GIS). In recent years, the ultra high frequency (UHF) method for PD detection arouses great interest of many researchers because of the high sensitivity and anti-interference capability. The coupling of UHF signal is the key to the detection of partial discharge in GIS. The structure size of GIS has great impacts on the PD signal, because the cutoff frequency of the high order mode of the electromagnetic (EM) wave depends on the diameters of the inner conductor and enclosure. In this paper, the influence of the inner conductor diameter is investigated by varying the center conductor size. The inner coupler is adopted to receive the partial discharge signal, and two types of PD sources are tested in the experiment. Firstly, the amplitude and the duration of the time domain signal and the frequency spectrum are focused, and their variations with the size of inner conductor are analyzed. Besides that, In order to research the changes of the TEM mode component and the high order mode component, low pass (LP), band pass (BP) and high pass (HP) filters are applied to process the PD signals, and the cumulative energy rates are calculated to indicate the energy distribution. In addition, a simulation using the FDTD method is conducted for comparison with the experimental results, and it indicates that the results of experiment and simulation are almost consistent.
