Abstract:We present an all-optical switch based on photothermal effects in a silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) integrated with a light absorber. The metal-insulator-metal light absorber located near the longer arm of the asymmetric MZI efficiently converts infrared light to heat. Pumped by a continuous-wave 1064-nm laser, the spectral transmittance of the fully etched strip waveguide (half-etched rib waveguide) MZI can be tuned with an efficiency of 38 pm/mW (98.5 pm/mW). Dynamic switching experiments show that the rise/fall time constant of the output probe light is 11.45/10.98 μs (8.25/7.13 μs) for the fully etched (half-etched) MZI.

Abstract:A total-internal-reflection waveguide switch with an X junction was designed and fabricated by using the thermo-optic effect of polyimide materials. Experimental results show that the crosstalk is below −28 dB at the wavelength of 1.55 μm. The switching power with the current electrode is 132 mW, which can be reduced to 20–30 mW with an optimized design together with electroplating to form a thick conducting path.

Abstract:Response speed and power consumption are improved for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) thermo-optic (TO) switch, by using a hybrid silica/polymer waveguide structure and optimizing both the thickness of the silica under cladding and that of the PMMA-GMA upper cladding. Fabrication techniques, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin-coating and wet-etching, are adopted to develop the switch sample. Under 1550nm wavelength, the driving powers under ON and OFF states are measured to be 0 and 13mW, respectively, indicating a switching power of 13mW. The fiber-to-fiber insertion loss under the ON state is 15 dB, the extinction ratio between the ON state and the OFF state is 18.3 dB, and the rise time and fall time are 73.5 and 96.5 mu s, respectively. Compared with the TO switches based on Si/SiO2 or all-polymer waveguide structure, the proposed device possesses both low power consumption and fast response speed, by virtue of the large TO coefficient of the polymer core, thin upper/under claddings and the large thermal conductivity of silica.

Abstract:By adopting polymer/silica hybrid rib waveguide structure,a low power-consumption Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) thermo-optic switch is designed and fabricated with techniques including chemical vapor deposition(CVD),spin-coating,wet-etching,etc.The wavelength dispersions of waveguide core,buffer and cladding materials are measured,and output power and output spectrum are theoretically analyzed.Switching response and spectrum characteristics are measured using a tunable laser as input source.Under 1 550 nm wavelength,the driving power of the switch is about 7.8 mW,the extinction ratio between ON state and OFF state is up to 32.6 dB,and under the function of pure square-wave switching signal(peak-to-peak amplitude of 3Vpp),the rising time and falling time are 107 μs and 71 μs,respectively.Keeping applying the driving power at 1 550 nm wavelength on the device,the measured spectrum width is about 50 nm(1 520-1 570 nm) with an extinction ratio over 18 dB.A noise-level-tunable driving source is developed with NE555 and other integrated circuits,and then the driving-noise-tolerance characteristics are investigated.Experimental results indicate that the allowed maximum noise-level is about 1.1 Vpp with a required extinction ratio larger than 10 dB.The proposed results in this paper are of good meanings for practical applications of such thermo-optic switches with the hybrid waveguide structure.

Abstract:This paper presents polarization-insensitive multimode interference (MMI) NxN Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) optical switch. First we analyze the working principle of each component of the MMI-MZI optical switch. Then using the discrete spectral index method (DSIM) to optimize the access single-mode rib waveguide of the device, we design and fabricate a 4x4 MMI-MZI optical switch with simple digital driven circuitry, acceptable voltage (similar to 12V) and low crosstalk (similar to -20dB).

Abstract:A complete design scheme and fabrication results of the total-internal-reflection (TIR) thermo-optic polymeric switch are presented for the first time. The measured results of the 1×2 TIR optical switch with an X junction show that the extinction ratio is about 25 dB at the crossing state while the reflecting state can be obtained with a 22 dB extinction ratio by applying a driving power of 158 mW - a driving voltage of 3.2 V and a related electric current of 49.4 mA.

Abstract:A new kind of thermo‐optic switch based on DR1/PMMA is proposed. This material has good cost‐performance, large thermo‐optic coefficient, and other advantages for electro‐optic devices because of the nonlinear chromophore DR1. Based on Mach‐Zehnder interferometer, this switch adopts the square waveguide structure and polymer silica hybrid configuration to adjust the optical field distribution for more thermo‐optic operation efficiency. A coplanar waveguide heater ensures the high frequency response of electrode and the ground electrode as a heat sink can prevent the thermo power accumulated. The total length of the device is 3.5 cm including the 1.5‐cm heater. The test results show that the extinction ratio is 21 dB, and the power consumption is less than 13 mW. The measured switching time is less than 0.9 ms. This work provides foundation for design and fabrication of electro‐optic and thermo‐optic hybrid integrated devices. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A polymer/silica hybrid 2×2 directional coupler (DC) Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) thermo-optic (TO) switch is designed and carefully fabricated. Because of larger thermal conductivity relative to the polymer, silica is utilized as bottom cladding for accelerating heat release. The fabricated TO switch with polymer/silica hybrid structure exhibits low power consumption, less than 7.2mW, fast rise time of about 106μs and fast fall time of about 93μs. This response time is reduced by 40% compared to that of the TO switch with polymer waveguide.

Abstract:A thermooptic switch With a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure was demonstrated with silicon photonic-crystal-slab line-defect waveguides. The device size was as small as 160 x 65 mu m. The optic switch operated at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and an extinction ratio greater than 30 dB was obtained by 120-mW heating (switching) power over the wavelength range of 15 nm. The switching ON-OFF response times were about 120 mu s.

Abstract:In this paper, the multimode interference (MMI) coupler is designed as the core part to form optical switches, and the polymer is employed as the waveguide material and its thermo-optical effect is used to control the self-imaging effect of the MMI coupler. The two MMI-based switches with the area-modulated and side-heated configuration are designed and fabricated. It can be found that the components have a small size and low driving power when the switches are designed with the MMI coupler as the core part.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a thermo-optic waveguide switch based on the configuration of a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer optimized for fast operation. The structure of the waveguides consists of two core layers with the lower layer formed with the high-index organic-inorganic hybrid material DR1/SiO2-TiO2. The hybrid material allows the mode field to be confined in an area for fast heat removal, and the formation of index tapers to expand the mode field at the two ends of the device to facilitate butt-coupling with single-mode fibers. Our typical fabricated device shows the same rise time and fall time of 80 μs and low switching power of 8.9 mW at the wavelength of 1550 nm.

Abstract:An organic/inorganic hybrid Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) thermo-optic(TO) switch is designed and fabricated by using the negative photoresist SU-8,polymer PMMA and silica as core,upper cladding and lower cladding,respectively.The structural parameters are optimized for assuring fundamental mode propagation,decreasing radiation loss and leakage loss,shortening response time and minimizing power consumption.Fabrication techniques,including spin-coating and wet-etching,are adopted to develop the device sample.Under 1 550 nm,the driving powers at ON state and OFF state are measured to be 0 and 13 mW,respectively,which indicates the switching power is 13 mW.The extinction ratio between ON state and OFF state is 18.3 dB,and under the square-wave switching signal,the rise time and fall time are 126 μs and 134 μs,respectively.Compared with the thermo-optic switches with Si/SiO2 structure and full polymer structure,the proposed hybrid device possesses low power consumption and fast response simultaneously,owning to the advantages,including large TO coefficient for polymer core material,thin upper/under claddings and larger thermal conductivity of silica relative to polymer.

Abstract:Mechanically flexible photonic devices are critical components of novel bio-integrated optoelectronic and high-end wearable systems, in which thermo-optic switches (TOSs) as optical signal control devices are crucial. In this paper, flexible titanium oxide (TiO2) TOSs based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure were demonstrated around 1310 nm for, it is believed, the first time. The insertion loss of flexible passive TiO2 2 × 2 multi-mode interferometers (MMIs) is -3.1 dB per MMI. The demonstrated flexible TOS achieves power consumption (Pπ) of 0.83 mW, compared with its rigid counterpart, for which Pπ is decreased by a factor of 18. The proposed device could withstand 100 consecutive bending operations without noticeable degradation in TOS performance, indicating excellent mechanical stability. These results provide a new perspective for designing and fabricating flexible TOSs for flexible optoelectronic systems in future emerging applications.

Abstract:A photonic switch of 2×3 structure was designed and fabricated using the thermo-optical effect of polymer materials. By setting sectional electrode and exerting voltage to proper section, we can control the reflection region length and ray propagation trace. Input light can be switched freely among three output ports. The experiment results show that, for the “half-reflection” state, the extinction ratio is 16.6dB for the half-reflection port; and for the “bar” state, the extinction ratio for the reflection port is 26.8dB. The power consumption is on the scale of 100mW and varies with different function mode.

Abstract:Detailed model, analysis and design technique are presented for simulating a high-speed polymer Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) electro-optic switch with push-pull dual driving electrodes and rib waveguides. The novel formulas of the time-domain response are derived. Thorough optimization and simulation for the designed device are performed. The total length of the basic function unit of the switch is about 5049μm, the push-pull switching voltage is 2.23V, the switching time is 18.1ps, and the insertion loss and crosstalk are less than 2.64 and −30dB, respectively, within the range of the operation wavelength from 1534 to 1566nm. These results are in good agreement with those obtained from the beam propagation method (BPM).
Compact Su8-Silica Hybrid Thermo-Optic Switch With Low Power Consumption

Abstract:We propose a novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) type thermo-optic switch based on SU8-silica hybrid waveguide structures. The switch consists of a 1 x 2 power splitter, two transmission arms and a 2 x 1 power combiner. The input/output waveguides and the power splitter/combiner are realized by the conventional silica waveguides, while the two arms for the MZI consist of SU8 strip waveguides. Such hybrid SU8-Silica waveguide strucutures combines the advantages of the low propagation loss of the silica waveguides and the large thermo-optic coefficient of SU8. Due to the high thermo-optic coefficient of SU8, the length of the transmission arm can be dramatically reduced.

Abstract:A dual-driving polymer Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) electro-optic switch is designed and optimized, which consists of a phase-generating coupler (PGC) and a 3-dB directional coupler. Structural schematics and principles of the PGC and the switch are described. Novel formulas of the switching time are presented. Under the central operation wavelength of 1550 nm, simulation for the designed device shows that the push-pull switching voltage is 2.445 V, the switching time is 18.1 ps, and the cross talk is less than −30 dB. By optimizing the PGC structure, the phase error resulting from the wavelength shift can be compensated effectively, and a wide spectrum about 110 nm can be achieved. The proposed analytical technique on waveguides and electrodes proves to be accurate and computationally efficient when compared with the beam propagation method (BPM) and the experimental results.
