Abstract:We investigate a silicon nitride (Si3N4) horizontal slot waveguide with silicon dioxide (SiO2) cladding, which can achieve a flat and low normal dispersion of −15.56 ps/(nm•km) over a 3270-nm wavelength range from 1170 to 4440 nm, covering a 1.9 octave bandwidth. By launching a 100-fs 90-kW hyperbolic secant input pump pulse, a three-octave supercontinuum (SC) from 504 to 4229 nm can be generated using a 5-mm long waveguide. The generated SC spectrum is highly coherent, as it is mainly expanded by self-phase modulation (SPM) and optical wave breaking (OWB) in all-normal dispersion regime. The degree of coherence can achieve >0.99 from 1250 to 4300 nm. Therefore, the proposed waveguide could potentially serve as a key element in the on-chip broadband source for silicon photonic platform.

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum laser sources are essential for spectroscopy in the molecular fingerprint region. Here, we report generation of octave-spanning and coherent mid-IR supercontinua in As 2 S 3 -silica nanospike hybrid waveguides pumped by a custom-built 2.8 μm femtosecond fiber laser. The waveguides are formed by pressure-assisted melt-filling of molten As 2 S 3 into silica capillaries, allowing the dispersion and nonlinearity to be precisely tailored. Continuous coherent spectra spanning from 1.1 μm to 4.8 μm (30 dB level) are observed when the waveguide is designed so that 2.8 μm lies in the anomalous dispersion regime. Moreover, linearly tapered millimeter-scale As 2 S 3 -silica waveguides are fabricated and investigated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, showing much broader supercontinua than uniform waveguides, with improved spectral coherence. The waveguides are demonstrated to be long-term stable and water-resistant due to the shielding of the As 2 S 3 by the fused silica sheath. They offer an alternative route to generating broadband mid-IR supercontinua, with applications in frequency metrology and molecular spectroscopy, especially in humid and aqueous environments.

Abstract:We achieve a flat broadband dispersion profile in a dual-core silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide utilizing the mode coupling between the quasi-TE00 mode in a narrow waveguide and the quasi-TE10 mode in a wide waveguide. Mode coupling extends the anomalous dispersion region and flattens the entire dispersion, creating four zero dispersion wavelengths. The generated dispersion profile varies between-10 and 13 ps/(nm center dot km) over an octave bandwidth from 1150 nm to 2425 nm. A two-octave supercontinuum spectrum from 750 nm to 3001 nm can be generated through the 5 mm long Si3N4 waveguide by launching a 50-fs 5-kW hyperbolic secant input pump pulse at anomalous dispersion region. Significant spectral broadening is also observed, by pumping in the normal dispersion region. The proposed Si3N4 waveguide has only a single-layer core structure and is compatible with the photonic Damascus process. Moreover, the obtained dispersion profile is insensitive to the gap distance between the narrow and wide waveguides, making it easier to fabricate than slot-assisted waveguide structures.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of a lower index oxide layer inclusion within a highly doped silica glass slot waveguide for optimized supercontinuum generation at telecom wavelengths. By controlling the thickness of the oxide slot, we demonstrate that one can engineer the waveguide dispersion profile so that to obtain supercontinua with vastly different spectral broadening dynamics and bandwidths. Using this approach, we designed and fabricated a waveguide with a low and flat dispersion profile of less than 43 ps/km/nm across a wavelength range spanning over 1000 nm. We show that, when pumped at the telecom C-band, we can generate a supercontinuum that spans over 1.5 octave, from approximately 817 nm to 2183 nm. The numerical simulations, whose parameters are derived from the measured waveguide dimension and material indices, exhibit good agreement with experimental measurements, where one can observe both a qualitative and quantitative match in the supercontinuum overall spectrum and specific features (e.g. soliton and dispersive wave locations). This study represents an important step forward in the control and manipulation of dispersive and nonlinear dynamics in highly doped silica glass waveguides, paving the way towards advanced on-chip broadband light manipulation.

Abstract:We propose a dispersion-flattened technology for producing broadband and low anomalous dispersion with minimal zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs). This structure can be formed by nanophotonic waveguides using different material combinations. Flat dispersion varying between 0 and 27 ps/nm/km and spanning a range of wavelengths between 1290 and 4570 nm can be achieved. Without applying dispersion hybridization and using complex material combinations, dispersion demonstrates good tolerance to pump wavelength selection and is easier to introduce. Furthermore, the designed structures are applied to generate a supercontinuum over three octaves considering wavelength dependent loss from cladding, which exhibits an excellent bandwidth of − 40 dB even with increasing losses from the waveguide material or structure generation. These findings are useful for supercontinuum generation over multiple octaves in different platforms, which is promising for self-referenced f-2f systems and spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:Dramatic advances in supercontinuum generation have been made recently using photonic crystal fibers, but it is quite challenging to obtain an octave-spanning supercontinuum on a chip, partially because of strong dispersion in high-index-contrast nonlinear integrated waveguides. We show by simulation that extremely flat and low dispersion can be achieved in silicon nitride slot waveguides over a wavelength band of 500 nm. Different from most of previously reported supercontinua that were generated either by higher-order soliton fission in anomalous dispersion regime or by self-phase modulation in normal dispersion regime, a two-octave supercontinuum from 630 to 2650 nm (360 THz in total) can be generated by enhancing self-steepening in pulse propagation in nearly zero dispersion regime, when an optical shock as short as 3 fs is formed.

Abstract:Propagation of femtosecond pulse and supercontinuum generation in silicon waveguide are investigated numerically by solving the generalized nonlinear Schrdinger equation. The effects of dispersive effect and nonlinear loss on supercontinuum generation are simulated and analyzed. It is found that soliton fission is the main mechanism of supercontinuum generation in silicon waveguide. The relative position between the central wavelength of femtosecond pulse and zero-dispersive wavelength (ZDW) of silicon waveguide significantly affects the generation of supercontinuum. When the input pulse falls in the anomalous dispersion regime, soliton fission phenomenon is most obvious. It is also found that the high-order dispersion plays an important role in supercontinuum generation. When the absolute value of third-order dispersion is smaller, a broader supercontinuum can be obtained. Besides, two-photon absorption (TPA) effect in silicon induces high loss, and reduces the spectral width of the supercontinuum.

Abstract:The generation of a flat supercontinuum of over 80 nm in the 1550nm region by injecting 1.6 ps 10 GHz repetition rate optical pulses into an 80-m-long dispersion-flattened microstructure fibre is demonstrated. The fibre has small normal dispersion with a variation smaller than 1.5 (ps(.)nm(-1.)km(-1)) between 1500 and 1650nm. The generated supercontinuum ranging from 1513 to 1591nm has the flatness of +/- 1.5dB and it is not so flat in the range of several nanometres around the pump wavelength 1552nm. Numerical simulation is also used to study the effect of optical loss, fibre parameters and pumping conditions on supercontinuum generation in the dispersion-flattened microstructure fibre, and can be used for further optimization to generate flat broad spectra.

Abstract:The generation of a flat supercontinuum(SC) spectrum of over 100 nm in the 1.55 μm region by injecting 1.6 ps,10-GHz repetition rate optical pulses into an 80-m-long dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear microstructure fiber(HNL-MF) is demonstrated.The experimental microstructure fiber with a nonlinearity of ～11 W-1·km-1 has small normal dispersion and is characterized by flattened chromatic dispersion.The chromatic dispersion is about-0.58 ps·nm-1·km-1 at 1550 nm,and it varies less than 1.5 ps·nm-1·km-1 between 1500 and 1650 nm.The generated flat broadband supercontinuum ranging from 1503 to 1593 nm has the flatness of ±2.5 dB.This flat broadband supercontinuum can simultaneously supply more than 1100 multi-wavelength channels with 10-GHz spacing.The multi-wavelength pulse trains at 10 Gbit/s based on spectral slicing are also demonstrated.Such supercontinuum source has important applications,such as wavelength division multiplexing optical communication system and optical wavelength convertor.

Abstract:We propose highly nonlinear slot waveguides with flat and low dispersion over a wide wavelength range. Si nano-crystal and chalcogenide glass are considered as slot materials. Over a 244-nm bandwidth, dispersion of 0 +/- 0.16 ps/(nm.m) is achieved in a silicon nano-crystal slot waveguide, with a nonlinear coefficient of 2874 /(W.m). The As2S3 slot waveguide exhibits dispersion of 0 +/- 0.17 ps/(nm.m) over a bandwidth of 249 nm, with a nonlinear coefficient 16 times larger than that of As2S3 rib waveguides and a nonlinear figure of merit three times larger than that of Si strip waveguides. Abstract:High flatness, wide bandwidth, and high-coherence properties of supercontinuum (SC) generation in fibers are crucial in many applications. It is challenging to achieve SC spectra in a combination of the properties, since special dispersion profiles are required, especially when pump pulses with duration over 100 fs are employed. We propose an all-solid microstructured fiber composed only of hexagonal glass elements. The optimized fiber possesses an ultraflat all-normal dispersion profile, covering a wide wavelength interval of approximately 1.55 μm. An SC spectrum spanning from approximately 1030 to 2030 nm (corresponding to nearly one octave) with flatness <3 dB is numerically generated in the fiber with 200 fs pump pulses at 1.55 μm. The results indicate that the broadband ultraflat SC sources can be all-fiber and miniaturized due to commercially achievable 200-fs fiber lasers. Moreover, the SC pulses feature high coherence and a single pulse in the time domain, which can be compressed to 13.9-fs pulses with high quality even for simple linear chirp compensation. The Fourier-limited pulse duration of the spectrum is 3.19 fs, corresponding to only 0.62 optical cycles.

Abstract:We propose a novel silicon waveguide that exhibits four zero-dispersion wavelengths for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, with a flattened dispersion over a 670-nm bandwidth. This holds a great potential for exploration of new nonlinear effects and achievement of ultra-broadband signal processing on a silicon chip. As an example, we show that an octave-spanning supercontinuum assisted by dispersive wave generation can be obtained in silicon, over a wavelength range from 1217 to 2451 nm, almost from bandgap wavelength to half-bandgap wavelength. Abstract:We reported near octave-spanning supercontinuum generation in Ge28Sb12Se60 chalcogenide glass rib waveguides. The waveguides were fabricated using foundry-compatible deep ultra-violet lithography, followed by plasma etching. We demonstrated an average propagation loss of ∼1.3 dB/cm at the 1550 nm telecommunication wavelength. With dispersion engineering, optimizing waveguide geometry, and pumping by a multi-wavelength femtosecond soliton fiber laser, we achieved a flat-top supercontinuum generation spanning from 1290 to 2400 nm and beyond . It has a 3 dB bandwidth of 436 nm and a 20 dB bandwidth of more than 900 nm. The implementation of such waveguides provides a practical broadband light source solution for on-chip spectroscopy and sensing systems.
