Abstract:We report the first observation of supercontinuum (SC) generation in single semiconductor nanoribbons (NRs). By launching a continuous wave (CW) 532-nm pump light along a 200-μm-length CdS NR for waveguiding excitation, SC generation is realized with a threshold down to sub-milliwatt level, which is ~3 orders lower compared with previous CW-pumped SC generated in glass fibers. The low threshold is benefitted from the favorable material properties and waveguide geometries including high Raman gains, strong light confinement, more optical guided modes and phonon modes. Our work paves the way to low-threshold nanoscale SC sources and may find widespread applications ranging from spectroscopic analysis and biological imaging to material research.

Abstract:Fully integrated supercontinuum sources on-chip are critical to enabling applications such as portable and mechanically-stable medical imaging devices, chemical sensing and LiDAR. However, the low-efficiency of current supercontinuum generation schemes prevent full on-chip integration. In this letter, we present a scheme where the input energy requirements for integrated supercontinuum generation is drastically lowered by orders of magnitude, for bandwidth generation of the order of 500 to 1000 nm. Through sign-alternating the dispersion in a CMOS compatible silicon nitride waveguide, we achieve an efficiency enhancement by factors reaching 3800. We show that the pulse energy requirement for large bandwidth supercontinuum generation at high spectral energy (e.g., 1/e level) is lowered from nanojoules to 6 picojoules. The lowered pulse energy requirements enables that chip-integrated laser sources, such as mode-locked heterogeneously or hybrid integrated diode lasers, can be used as a pump source, enabling fully integrated on-chip high-bandwidth supercontinuum sources.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) is an important nonlinear optical process enabling broadband light sources for many applications, for which silicon nitride(Si3N4) has emerged as a leading on-chip <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://platform.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> achieve suitable group velocity dispersion and high confinement for broadband SCG the Si3N4 waveguide layer used is typically thick (>~700 nm), which can lead to high stress and cracks unless specialized processing steps are used. Here, we report on efficient octave spanning SCG in a thinner moderate-confinement 400-nm Si3N4 platform using a highly nonlinear tellurium oxide (TeO2) coating. An octave-spanning supercontinuum is achieved at a low peak power of 258 W using a 100-fs laser centered at 1565 nm. Our numerical simulations agree well with the experimental results showing an increase of waveguide's nonlinear parameter by a factor of 2.5 when coating the Si3N4 waveguide with TeO2 film. This work demonstrates highly efficient SCG via effective dispersion engineering and an enhanced nonlinearity in a CMOS-compatible hybrid TeO2-Si3N4 waveguides and a promising route to monolithically integrated nonlinear, linear, and active functionalities on a single silicon photonic chip.

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum laser sources are essential for spectroscopy in the molecular fingerprint region. Here, we report generation of octave-spanning and coherent mid-IR supercontinua in As 2 S 3 -silica nanospike hybrid waveguides pumped by a custom-built 2.8 μm femtosecond fiber laser. The waveguides are formed by pressure-assisted melt-filling of molten As 2 S 3 into silica capillaries, allowing the dispersion and nonlinearity to be precisely tailored. Continuous coherent spectra spanning from 1.1 μm to 4.8 μm (30 dB level) are observed when the waveguide is designed so that 2.8 μm lies in the anomalous dispersion regime. Moreover, linearly tapered millimeter-scale As 2 S 3 -silica waveguides are fabricated and investigated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, showing much broader supercontinua than uniform waveguides, with improved spectral coherence. The waveguides are demonstrated to be long-term stable and water-resistant due to the shielding of the As 2 S 3 by the fused silica sheath. They offer an alternative route to generating broadband mid-IR supercontinua, with applications in frequency metrology and molecular spectroscopy, especially in humid and aqueous environments.

Abstract:We propose a dispersion-flattened technology for producing broadband and low anomalous dispersion with minimal zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs). This structure can be formed by nanophotonic waveguides using different material combinations. Flat dispersion varying between 0 and 27 ps/nm/km and spanning a range of wavelengths between 1290 and 4570 nm can be achieved. Without applying dispersion hybridization and using complex material combinations, dispersion demonstrates good tolerance to pump wavelength selection and is easier to introduce. Furthermore, the designed structures are applied to generate a supercontinuum over three octaves considering wavelength dependent loss from cladding, which exhibits an excellent bandwidth of − 40 dB even with increasing losses from the waveguide material or structure generation. These findings are useful for supercontinuum generation over multiple octaves in different platforms, which is promising for self-referenced f-2f systems and spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:Compact chip-scale comb sources are of significant interest for many practical applications. Here, we experimentally study the generation of supercontinuum (SC) in an axially varying integrated waveguide. We show that the local tuning of the dispersion enables the continuous blue shift of dispersive waves thanks to their trapping by the strongly compressed pump pulse. This mechanism provides new insight into supercontinuum generation in a dispersion varying integrated waveguide. Pumped close to 2.2 $\mu$m in the femtosecond regime and at a pulse energy of $\sim$ 4 pJ, the output spectrum extends from 1.1 $\mu$m up to 2.76 $\mu$m and shows good coherence properties. Octave-spanning SC is also observed at input energy as low as $\sim$ 0.9 pJ. We show that the supercontinuum is more robust against variations of the input pulse parameters and is also spectrally flatter in our numerically optimized waveguide than in fixed-width waveguides. This research demonstrates the potential of dispersion varying waveguides for coherent SC generation and paves the way for integrated low power applications, such as chip-scale frequency comb generation, precision spectroscopy, optical frequency metrology, and wide-band wavelength division multiplexing in the near-infrared.

Abstract:Optical sources emitting in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared wavelength range are an enabling tools for a wide variety of applications. To achieve broadband coherent generation within visible and UV spectrum, one fundamental obstacle is the strong material dispersion which limits efficient frequency conversion. Previous works have addressed this challenge by either using high input energies or delicate resonant structures. In this work, a simple device system is proposed to tackle the problem. Single crystalline aluminum nitride material with a threading dislocation density less than 109 cm–2 was used to provide broadband transparency, and a high order waveguide mode (transverse electric, TE10) was used to create anomalous dispersion near 800 nm, in which soliton fission processes are supported. Abstract:Supercontinua are broadband spectra that are essential to optical spectroscopy, sensing, imaging, and metrology. They are generated from ultrashort laser pulses through nonlinear frequency conversion in fibers, bulk media, and chip-integrated waveguides. For any generating platform, balancing the competing criteria of strong nonlinearity, transparency, and absence of multiphoton absorption is a key challenge. Here, we explore supercontinuum generation in integrated gallium nitride (GaN) waveguides, which combine a high Kerr-nonlinearity, mid-infrared transparency, and a large bandgap that prevents two- and three-photon absorption in the technologically important telecom C-band, where compact erbium-based pump lasers exist. Using this type of laser, we demonstrate tunable dispersive waves and gap-free spectra extending to almost 4 micron in wavelength, relevant to functional group chemical sensing. Additionally, leveraging the material's second-order nonlinearity, we implement on-chip f-2f interferometry to detect the pump laser's carrier-envelope offset frequency, which enables precision metrology. These results demonstrate the versatility of GaN-on-sapphire as a new platform for broadband nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:We investigate on-chip spectral control of supercontinuum generation, taking advantage of the additional spatial degree of freedom in strongly-coupled dual-core waveguides. Using numerical integration of the multi-mode generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we show that, with proper waveguide cross-section design, selective excitation of supermodes can vary the dispersion to its extremes, i.e., all-normal or anomalous dispersion can be selected via phase shifting in a Mach-Zehnder input circuit. The resulting control allows to provide vastly different supercontinuum spectra with the same waveguide circuit.

Abstract:Abstract Coherent broadband light generation has attracted massive attention due to its numerous applications ranging from metrology, sensing, and imaging to communication. In general, spectral broadening is realized via third-order and higher-order nonlinear optical processes (e.g., self-phase modulation, Raman transition, four-wave mixing, multiwave mixing), which are typically weak and thus require a long interaction length and the phase matching condition to enhance the efficient nonlinear light-matter interaction for broad-spectrum generation. Here, for the first time, we report octave-spanning coherent light generation at the nanometer scale enabled by a phase-matching-free frequency down-conversion process. Up to octave-spanning coherent light generation with a -40dB spectral width covering from ~ 565 to 1906 nm is demonstrated via difference-frequency generation, a second-order nonlinear process in gallium selenide and niobium oxide diiodide crystals at the 100-nanometer scale. Compared with conventional coherent broadband light sources based on bulk materials, our demonstration is ~5 orders of magnitude thinner and requires ~ 3 orders of magnitude lower excitation power. Our results open a new way to possibly create compact, versatile and integrated ultra-broadband light sources.

Abstract:We reported near octave-spanning supercontinuum generation in Ge28Sb12Se60 chalcogenide glass rib waveguides. The waveguides were fabricated using foundry-compatible deep ultra-violet lithography, followed by plasma etching. We demonstrated an average propagation loss of ∼1.3 dB/cm at the 1550 nm telecommunication wavelength. With dispersion engineering, optimizing waveguide geometry, and pumping by a multi-wavelength femtosecond soliton fiber laser, we achieved a flat-top supercontinuum generation spanning from 1290 to 2400 nm and beyond . It has a 3 dB bandwidth of 436 nm and a 20 dB bandwidth of more than 900 nm. The implementation of such waveguides provides a practical broadband light source solution for on-chip spectroscopy and sensing systems.

Abstract:Many key functionalities of optical frequency combs such as self-referencing and broad spectral access rely on coherent supercontinuum generation (SCG). While nanophotonic waveguides have emerged as a compact and power-efficient platform for SCG, their geometric degrees of freedom have not been fully utilized due to the underlying nonlinear and stochastic physics. Here, we introduce inverse design to unlock free-form waveguides for coherent SCG. The efficacy of our design is numerically and experimentally demonstrated on Si3N4 waveguides, producing flat and coherent spectra from visible to mid-infrared wavelengths. Our work has direct applications in developing chip-based broadband light sources for spectroscopy, metrology, and sensing across multiple spectral regimes.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of a lower index oxide layer inclusion within a highly doped silica glass slot waveguide for optimized supercontinuum generation at telecom wavelengths. By controlling the thickness of the oxide slot, we demonstrate that one can engineer the waveguide dispersion profile so that to obtain supercontinua with vastly different spectral broadening dynamics and bandwidths. Using this approach, we designed and fabricated a waveguide with a low and flat dispersion profile of less than 43 ps/km/nm across a wavelength range spanning over 1000 nm. We show that, when pumped at the telecom C-band, we can generate a supercontinuum that spans over 1.5 octave, from approximately 817 nm to 2183 nm. The numerical simulations, whose parameters are derived from the measured waveguide dimension and material indices, exhibit good agreement with experimental measurements, where one can observe both a qualitative and quantitative match in the supercontinuum overall spectrum and specific features (e.g. soliton and dispersive wave locations). This study represents an important step forward in the control and manipulation of dispersive and nonlinear dynamics in highly doped silica glass waveguides, paving the way towards advanced on-chip broadband light manipulation.

Abstract:Integrated photonics has for several years included in its panoply the development of functions based on third-order non-linear optical phenomena, from the generation of supercontinuum or frequency comb sources to metrology or spectroscopy on chip applications. This natural evolution, after the development of high-speed transceivers in the last few years, particularly in silicon photonics, is based on a number of compromises and still has to solve problems, particularly concerning the integration of nonlinear materials on silicon and their exploitation. The work we present addresses two directions. The first is oriented towards the development of a supercontinuum source using Nitrogen-rich photonic circuits from an industrial CMOS platform, while the second aims at the development of hybrid highly nonlinear waveguides significantly reducing the impact of twophoton absorption in the telecom window around 1,55μm by exploiting silicon slot waveguides infiltrated by chalcogenide glasses (As2S3).
Supercontinuum generation in high-index doped silica photonic integrated circuits under diverse pumping settings

Abstract:Recent advances in supercontinuum light generation have been remarkable, particularly in the context of highly nonlinear photonic integrated waveguides. In this study, we thoroughly investigate supercontinuum (SC) generation in high-index doped silica glass integrated waveguides, exploring various femtosecond pumping wavelengths and input polarization states. We demonstrate broadband SC generation spanning from 700 nm to 2400 nm when pumping within the anomalous dispersion regime at 1200 nm, 1300 nm, and 1550 nm. In contrast, pumping within the normal dispersion regime at 1000 nm results in narrower SC spectra, primarily due to coherent nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking. Additionally, we examine the impact of TE/TM polarization modes on SC generation, shedding light on the polarization-dependent characteristics of the broadening process. Moreover, Raman scattering measurements reveal the emergence of two new peaks at 48.8 THz and 75.1 THz in the Raman gain curve. Our experimental results are supported by numerical simulations based on a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation that incorporates the new Raman gain contribution. Finally, relative intensity noise measurements conducted using the dispersive Fourier transform technique indicate excellent stability of the generated SC spectra.
