Abstract:A method to generate multiple dispersive waves (DWs) with pumping in a normal dispersion regime is proposed. We show flexibility of producing four DWs in a silicon nitride (Si3N4) slot waveguide and explain the underlying dynamics of a four DWs generation process in detail, i.e., DWs emission via the optical wave-breaking phenomenon in an anomalous dispersion regime. Compression of the first anomalous DW results in the subsequent cascade DW generation. Combined with the soliton induced blue-shifted dispersive wave and red-shifted dispersive wave, the spectrum spans from visible to mid-IR with high coherence. The four DWs generation process has agreement with prediction of the phase-matching condition. Overall, this multiple DWs generation method in a Si3N4 waveguide provides the possibility for having an efficient, compact, and coherent mid-IR light source.

DWs are generated at visible and mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength regions, respectively. We obtain a broadband low normal dispersion region from 2 to 5.25 μm, which offers particular advantages for DW generation at mid-IR wavelength region. The long-wave dispersive wave (LWDW) can cover beyond 4 μm. This is the first time to illustrate the freedom of Si3N4 slot waveguide for DWs generation ever reported. A broadband spectrum can be extended from 0.5 to 4.5 μm at -30 dB level by launching a 1-kW 1550-nm hyperbolic secant input pump pulse to a 1-cm proposed waveguide. The newly formed spectrum has a high degree of coherence. This approach provides more flexibility for frequency conversion, and has the advantages for biophotonics, optical sensing, chip-integrated spectroscopy, health and environmental monitoring.

Subwavelength-diameter Silica Wire for Light In-Coupling to Silicon-Based Waveguide

Abstract:Coupling between subwavelength-diameter silica wires and silicon-based waveguides is studied using the parallel three-dimensional (3D) finite-different time-domain method. Conventional butt-coupling to a silica-substrated silicon wire waveguide gives above 40% transmission at the wavelength range from 1300 to 1750 nm with good robustness against axial misalignments. Slow light can be generated by counter-directional coupling between a silica wire and a two-dimensional (2D) silicon photonic crystal slab waveguide. Through dispersion-band engineering, 82% transmission is achieved over a coupling distance of 50 lattice constants. The group velocity is estimated as 1/35 of the light speed in vacuum.

Numerical Study on Flat Dispersion in a Single-Layer Si3N4 Coupled-Waveguides with Four Zero-Dispersion Wavelengths for Supercontinuum Generation

Abstract:We achieve a flat broadband dispersion profile in a dual-core silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide utilizing the mode coupling between the quasi-TE00 mode in a narrow waveguide and the quasi-TE10 mode in a wide waveguide. Mode coupling extends the anomalous dispersion region and flattens the entire dispersion, creating four zero dispersion wavelengths. The generated dispersion profile varies between-10 and 13 ps/(nm center dot km) over an octave bandwidth from 1150 nm to 2425 nm. A two-octave supercontinuum spectrum from 750 nm to 3001 nm can be generated through the 5 mm long Si3N4 waveguide by launching a 50-fs 5-kW hyperbolic secant input pump pulse at anomalous dispersion region. Significant spectral broadening is also observed, by pumping in the normal dispersion region. The proposed Si3N4 waveguide has only a single-layer core structure and is compatible with the photonic Damascus process. Moreover, the obtained dispersion profile is insensitive to the gap distance between the narrow and wide waveguides, making it easier to fabricate than slot-assisted waveguide structures.

Abstract:Point diffraction interferometer (PDI) has become the most promising measurement tool since it is firstly proposed by Linnik and its key component used to generate the reference wave can be called as the reference wave source (RWS). A new RWS based on the silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide is now proposed, aimed at providing a spherical reference wave with high NA and high accuracy. Simulation results show that the PV and the RMS of the reference wave generated by the waveguide RWS are 2.86x10(-4)lambda (lambda=532nm) and 4.83x10(-5)lambda respectively, and the maximum light transmittance of this RWS could reach 24%. In addition, the NA of the reference wave reaches up to 0.58.

Abstract:We investigate a silicon nitride (Si3N4) horizontal slot waveguide with silicon dioxide (SiO2) cladding, which can achieve a flat and low normal dispersion of −15.56 ps/(nm•km) over a 3270-nm wavelength range from 1170 to 4440 nm, covering a 1.9 octave bandwidth. By launching a 100-fs 90-kW hyperbolic secant input pump pulse, a three-octave supercontinuum (SC) from 504 to 4229 nm can be generated using a 5-mm long waveguide. The generated SC spectrum is highly coherent, as it is mainly expanded by self-phase modulation (SPM) and optical wave breaking (OWB) in all-normal dispersion regime. The degree of coherence can achieve >0.99 from 1250 to 4300 nm. Therefore, the proposed waveguide could potentially serve as a key element in the on-chip broadband source for silicon photonic platform.

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum laser sources are essential for spectroscopy in the molecular fingerprint region. Here, we report generation of octave-spanning and coherent mid-IR supercontinua in As 2 S 3 -silica nanospike hybrid waveguides pumped by a custom-built 2.8 μm femtosecond fiber laser. The waveguides are formed by pressure-assisted melt-filling of molten As 2 S 3 into silica capillaries, allowing the dispersion and nonlinearity to be precisely tailored. Continuous coherent spectra spanning from 1.1 μm to 4.8 μm (30 dB level) are observed when the waveguide is designed so that 2.8 μm lies in the anomalous dispersion regime. Moreover, linearly tapered millimeter-scale As 2 S 3 -silica waveguides are fabricated and investigated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, showing much broader supercontinua than uniform waveguides, with improved spectral coherence. The waveguides are demonstrated to be long-term stable and water-resistant due to the shielding of the As 2 S 3 by the fused silica sheath. They offer an alternative route to generating broadband mid-IR supercontinua, with applications in frequency metrology and molecular spectroscopy, especially in humid and aqueous environments.

Abstract:We propose a novel silicon waveguide that exhibits four zero-dispersion wavelengths for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, with a flattened dispersion over a 670-nm bandwidth. This holds a great potential for exploration of new nonlinear effects and achievement of ultra-broadband signal processing on a silicon chip. As an example, we show that an octave-spanning supercontinuum assisted by dispersive wave generation can be obtained in silicon, over a wavelength range from 1217 to 2451 nm, almost from bandgap wavelength to half-bandgap wavelength. Abstract:We characterize pulse spectral broadening in dispersion-engineered 4H-SiC-on- insulator waveguides. We demonstrate, for the first time, supercontinuum generation in SiC waveguides. We achieve a 30-dB bandwidth over 300 nm by using 510-fs pulses as the pump.

Abstract:A proposal for broadband wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing is presented based on a slot waveguide with silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc's) as the optical nonlinear material. The dispersion of the waveguide is engineered to realize a flat dispersion as well as a small effective mode area for better nonlinear interaction by optimizing the waveguide dimensions. The conversion performance is synthetically analyzed and numerical results show that a bandwidth of over 400 nm and an efficiency of -2.38 dB can be achieved using a pump power of 150 mW in a 4 mm long Si-nc slot waveguide with slot width of 50 nm, slab width of 310 nm, and height of 305 nm.

Abstract:Silicon nitride waveguides have emerged as an excellent platform for photonic applications, including nonlinear optical signal processing, owing to their relatively high Kerr nonlinearity, negligible two photon absorption, and wide transparent bandwidth. In this paper, we propose an effective approach using 3D finite element method to optimize the dispersion characteristics of silicon nitride waveguides for four-wave mixing (FWM) applications. Numerical studies show that a flat and low dispersion profile can be achieved in a silicon nitride waveguide with the optimized dimensions. Near-zero dispersion of 1.16 ps/km/nm and 0.97 ps/km/nm at a wavelength of 1550 nm are obtained for plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) silicon nitride waveguides, respectively. The fabricated micro-ring resonator with the optimized dimensions exhibits near-zero dispersion of −0.04 to −0.1 ps/m/nm over a wavelength range of 130 nm which agrees with the numerical simulation results. FWM results show that near-zero phase mismatch and high conversion efficiencies larger than −12 dB using a low pump power of 0.5 W in a 13-cm long silicon nitride waveguide are achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate infrared supercontinuum generation in 4H-SiC on insulator slab waveguides. The effect of waveguide geometry parameters on dispersion is investigated to switch the zero-dispersion wavelength close to the pump wavelength. The 1 cm long 4H-SiC waveguide is pumped by 100 fs pulses at 1550 nm with 2000 W peak power, and the generated supercontinuum extends from ∼1000 to ∼3560n m (at 20 dB level). This work shows that 4H-SiC has significant potential as on-chip photonic sources for spectroscopic applications in infrared wavelengths.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel approach to producing coherent, directional supercontinuum via cascaded dispersive wave generation. By pumping in the normal group-velocity dispersion regime, pulse compression of the first dispersive wave results in the generation of a second dispersive wave, resulting in an octave-spanning supercontinuum generated primarily to one side of the pump spectrum. We theoretically investigate the dynamics and show that the generated spectrum is highly coherent. We experimentally confirm this dynamical behavior and the coherence properties in silicon nitride waveguides by performing direct detection of the carrier-envelope-offset frequency of our femtosecond pump source using an f-2f interferometer. Our technique offers a path towards a stabilized, high-power, integrated supercontinuum source with low noise and high coherence, with applications including direct comb spectroscopy.
