Abstract:The current different kinds of error expressions of digital electrical measuring instruments are firstly illustrated. Then the popular causes of these errors are analysed. These errors may be concluded to two kinds: one kind of errors directly proportional to the measured value, and constant errors. Based on a lot of experimental results of various digital electrical measuring instruments and the analysis of merits and demerits of different kinds of one, the error expression of the two terms is the best one of the digital electrical measuring instruments. The conclusion can be utilized by the manufacturers and users of digital electrical measuring instruments.

Abstract:According to the ISO standard “Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement” and the technical measurement specification of China “Evaluation and Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement”,general procedure for evaluating uncertainties of thermocouples based temperature measurement system was deduced in this study.Taking a typical thermocouples system as an example,detailed steps of calculating its uncertainties were presented first,and then the influence of each uncertainty component was analyzed.At last,relevant measures for reducing uncertainties were put forward aiming at optimizing the performance of the temperature measurement system using thermocouples.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to increase the measurement accuracy of assembly deviations of an inertial navigation system, a new evaluation and optimal method of assembly metrology system is proposed, which takes into account the uncertainty from laser tracker hardware and coordinate system transformation, and is based on the Monte Carlo method. Design/methodology/approach - The uncertainty model of the laser tracker is established and its parameters are obtained from the known repeated test data by kriging interpolation and the least squares method. The errors of coordinate transformation are reduced by using a weighted point matching method, and the uncertainty of the transformation parameters is obtained based on the generalized inverse theory. The weighting coefficients of each reference point are optimized by the particle swarm optimization method according to the assembly requirements. Findings - The experiment results show that measurement error and predicted results match well, and the assembly deviation uncertainty of large component is reduced by about 10 per cent compared with the singular value decomposition method. Originality/value - This paper proposes a method to evaluate and eliminate the influence of random errors of the laser tracker during evaluation process of coordinate translation parameters and assembly deviations. The proposed method would be useful to improve the assembly measurement accuracy through less measurement times.

Abstract:The uncertainty evaluation process of imperfect experimental data is presented in this paper. In the process, data neither in steady state nor under normal distribution compared with the conventional assumptions are considered. Results of the evaluation show that the uncertainty is asymmetry to the mean of the data while symmetry in conventional way. Furthermore, three ways to deal with the uncertainty propagation are discussed, and the probability propagation is simulated by Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:Mutative Scale Measurement is often used to measure the characteristics of mechanical and electrical equipments/components in manufacturing industry. A typical case is the straightness measurement of large-scale rails. Due to the uncertainty of surface error distribution, and difference in the size and the locations of sample points, the evaluated value has a certain degree of uncertainty, which reduces the accuracy of the measurement. Since the decrease of uncertainty is at the expense of higher measurement cost, optimization of measurement cost for an acceptable uncertainty becomes a significant issue. This paper describes the composition of the uncertainty that caused by the measuring process and analyzes the uncertainty caused by sample size insufficiency. On the basis of these arguments, a model has been proposed to calculate the minimum sample size which meets the requirement of measurement uncertainty. Case studies are carried out to demonstrate the application of the derived methodology on sampling strategy. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties can be represented probabilistically in mechanical systems. However, the distribution parameters of epistemic uncertainties are also uncertain due to sparsely available or inaccurate uncertainty information. Therefore, a unified reliability measure method that considers uncertainties of input variables and their distribution parameters simultaneously is proposed. The uncertainty information for distribution parameters of epistemic uncertainties could be as a result of insufficient data or interval information, which is represented with evidence theory. The probability density function of uncertain distribution parameters is constructed through fusing insufficient data and interval information based on a Gaussian interpolation algorithm, and the epistemic uncertainties are represented using a weighted sum of probability variables based on discrete distribution parameters. The reliability index considering aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties is calculated around the most probable point. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through comparison with the Monte Carlo method in the engineering example of a crank-slider mechanism and composite laminated plate.

Abstract:To analyze and statistically compare common errors in the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in medicine and health field, using literature research and comparison with national standards, in order to understand the current status of measurement uncertainty evaluation in the medicine and health field. Using Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) as the sample population, Stratified Proportional Sampling (PPS) was used to extract journal articles related to measurement uncertainty in the field of medicine and health. The articles were compared with the Eurachem/CITAC Guide QUAM to analyze measurement uncertainty errors. Academic attention to measurement uncertainty in the field of medicine and health in the CNKI literature database has shown explosive growth since 2005. Seven common errors in measurement uncertainty evaluation were identified. None of the 30 journal articles analyzed were error-free, with a total error rate of 44 %. The error rate for ignorance of blank uncertainty was 87 %, improper evaluation of standard curve was 67 %, improper significant figures were 60 %, and insufficient information for Type B evaluation was 50 %. The error rate for provincial and higher-level institutions was 48 %, while the error rate for institutions below the provincial level was 43 %. The difference between the two error rates was not statistically significant ( p = 0.523). There is an urgent need to improve the rationality of measurement uncertainty evaluation in medicine and health field, and to strengthen the education and academic communication through national and international cooperation. Abstract:The self-calibration uncertainty of ultra-precision stages caused by random measurement noise was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations.The maximum uncertainty amplification factor of the self-calibration algorithm was used as the quantitative evaluation index.The evaluation used random sampling based on the joint probability density function of the self-calibration algorithm input parameters with statistical analysis of the output population.The simulation results show that the method is more versatile and reliable,and can effectively evaluate the self-calibration algorithm in the design phase so that it has more effect on the design of the self-calibration method for ultra-precision stages.

Abstract:To reduce product quality problem caused by color measuring deviation and have a better control of product quality in dyeing and printing sectors,it is necessary to evaluate color measuring result.Color measuring result′s uncertainty is evaluated on the basis of analyzing evaluation methods of measuring uncertainty,taking into consideration the characteristics of color measurement at the same time.Firstly,according to evaluation method of uncertainty of ISO,calculation of spectral reflectance′s uncertainty is analyzed based on uncertainty′s sources and correlation coefficient between different spectral reflectance;then chromatic value′s uncertainty is calculated based on spectral reflectance′s uncertainty.Finally,practical application of color measuring result′s uncertainty is analyzed by examples.The present work has laid a theoretical basis for further study.
High precision weighing and uncertainty assessment in reagent preparation

Abstract:The volume of the reagent in one tube was difficult to be measured in reagent preparation, as the volume of each portion was extremely small. Formerly, the measurement errors of direct weighing method were large. Therefore, the method of twice minusing method was used to weighing in order to obtain the reagent preparation result more accurately. The sources of uncertainty of this method were analyzed and the uncertainty was evaluated, the uncertainty of twice minusing method and direct weighing method was compared. The results showed that the expanded uncertainty of the reagents in one of the eight-connected tubes was 2.26610-4 g (k = 2) when using twice minusing method, and the expanded uncertainty was 1.70410-3 g (k = 2) when using direct weighing method, so the results of twice minusing method were more reliable.

Abstract:A model was developed to evaluate the combined uncertainty of sampling based instruments. This paper analyzes the measurement uncertainty sources caused by the quantization error,offset error,gain error and integral nonlinearity error in data acquisition,as well as the measurement uncertainty sources in the fixed-point and floating-point operations by the digital signal processor with finite word-length. The propagation model of all the uncertainty sources in the data acquisition and signal processing through the discrete Fourier transform algorithm was studied based on the above results. Simulations illustrate the validity of the presented analytical expression between the combined standard uncertainty and the analogue to digital conversion bits,the fix-point or float-point operation bits,the signal-noise ratio and the sample number.

Abstract:The traditional measurement theory interprets the variance as the dispersion of a measured value, which is actually contrary to a general mathematical concept that the variance of a constant is 0. This paper will fully demonstrate that the variance in measurement theory is actually the evaluation of probability interval of an error instead of the dispersion of a measured value, point out the key point of mistake in the traditional interpretation, and fully interpret a series of changes in conceptual logic and processing method brought about by this new concept.

Abstract:The accurate measurement of spindle errors, especially quasi-static errors, is one of the key issues for the analysis and compensation of machine tool thermal errors in machining accuracy. To quantitatively analyze the influence of the measurement system's own drift on the measurement results, a drifted uncertainty evaluation method of the precision instrument considering the time drift coefficient is proposed. This study also produced a high-precision compact spindle error measurement device (with a displacement measurement error of less than ±1.33 μm and an angular measurement error of less than ±1.42 arcsecs) as the research object to verify the proposed drift uncertainty evaluation method. A method for evaluating the drift uncertainty of the measurement system is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the system error and drift uncertainty of the measurement device. Experiments show that the drift uncertainty evaluation method proposed in this paper is more suitable for evaluating the uncertainty changes in measurement instruments during long-term measurements compared to traditional methods.

Abstract:For measuring the power of signal by an intelligent instrument based on alternating current(AC) sampling,a new model of uncertainty evaluation is presented.With the effects of hardware and the frequency fluctuation of signal,the synchronous sampling becomes an asynchronous process.In this case,if it still adopts the algorithm on the basis of synchronous sampling,it will result in the measurement error that can be regarded as a systematic effect.A simple correction algorithm is presented by an approximate method.Assuming the quantization noise and the interference in sampling process as random variables with specific distribution characteristics,the combined uncertainty of the measurement result by the new correction algorithmis evaluated by the statistical method and the law of uncertainty propagation.The model,correcting the systematic effect firstly and then evaluating the uncertaintyof the random effects,is more accordant with the measurementpractice.The physical experiments and computer simulationsverify that the results are valid.

Abstract:As an important support for test and control projects, sensor’s performance is directly related to the accuracy of the measurement. To fully analyze the sources of measurement uncertainty for a surface acoustic wave micro-pressure sensor, in this study the Monte Carlo method and Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement to evaluate measurement uncertainty of sensors are used, the sensing experiment was conducted and the measurement addition model was established. We determined the source of measurement uncertainty for a surface acoustic wave micro-pressure sensor. The results show that the Monte Carlo method can obtain a more reliable and accurate inclusion interval in the measurement uncertainty evaluation of a surface acoustic wave micro-pressure sensor.

Abstract:In recent years, the scientific community has made great efforts to establish procedures for the estimation of uncertainty in various measurement processes in laboratories. In this regard, the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement has been one of the most widely used documents for the estimation of uncertainty values in measurement processes. In spite of its success, the linear propagation method of uncertainties proposed in this guide presents serious deficiencies when trying to estimate uncertainty in measurement or calibration processes where an intensive mathematical treatment is used, particularly when these introduce important sources of variability. An example of this is the quantification of Sn, Sb and Cu in Babbitt metal by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence. In this material, Sn and Sb present a strong spectral interference between their different lines, which forces the use of mathematical methods of deconvolution and correction of inter-element effects that introduce sources of variability usually neglected. This work proposes an alternative to the uncertainty quantification based on the Monte Carlo method where the sources of variability resulting from the spectral treatment and matrix effects are included. Methodologies for the establishment of the main practical aspects of the Monte Carlo method and its adaptation to calibration methodologies are also proposed. The influence of disregarding the variability introduced by the spectrum treatment algorithms on the uncertainty estimation is shown.

Abstract:Objective: To introduce the concepts and treatment methods of uncertainty in pharmacoeconomic evaluation.Methods: The concepts and treatment methods of uncertainty in pharmacoeconomic evaluation were analyzed and summarized by searching relevant literatures.Results: The presence of uncertainty, which may be produced in the various stages of pharmacoeconomic evaluation process, can affect the accuracy and conifdence of the results of pharmacoeconomic evaluation and it can be effectively evaluated and treated by completing the research design and improving the statistical and sensitivity analysis.Conclusion: The uncertainty should be reduced from all aspects in order to ensure the accuracy and confidence in pharmacoeconomic evaluation. Meanwhile, the uncertainty can be assessed by sensitivity analysis during evaluation, which can assist the researcher to control the uncertainty factors.

Abstract:Scanning measurement systems are a pivotal solution to enable the rapid collection of 3D data from physical entities and provide further information for quality control. However, some external factors besides the scanner itself can also influence the measurement accuracy of the scanning system. In this paper, we propose a framework for analyzing the relative attitude influence of scanners on measurement uncertainty in the X and Z directions, respectively, containing the measured uncertainty calculation by the proposed optimal edge points detection and plane segmentation algorithm and the measurement uncertainty prediction model by machine learning. Experiments demonstrate that the distribution feature of measurement uncertainty differs in the X and Z directions and can provide predictions of the measurement uncertainty with about 0.2 % averaged MRE value. Our analysis advances the understanding of measurement uncertainty of scanning systems in different directions while it can be further applied to refine the calibration and measurement process.
