Abstract:The uncertainty evaluation process of imperfect experimental data is presented in this paper. In the process, data neither in steady state nor under normal distribution compared with the conventional assumptions are considered. Results of the evaluation show that the uncertainty is asymmetry to the mean of the data while symmetry in conventional way. Furthermore, three ways to deal with the uncertainty propagation are discussed, and the probability propagation is simulated by Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:To analyze and statistically compare common errors in the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in medicine and health field, using literature research and comparison with national standards, in order to understand the current status of measurement uncertainty evaluation in the medicine and health field. Using Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) as the sample population, Stratified Proportional Sampling (PPS) was used to extract journal articles related to measurement uncertainty in the field of medicine and health. The articles were compared with the Eurachem/CITAC Guide QUAM to analyze measurement uncertainty errors. Academic attention to measurement uncertainty in the field of medicine and health in the CNKI literature database has shown explosive growth since 2005. Seven common errors in measurement uncertainty evaluation were identified. None of the 30 journal articles analyzed were error-free, with a total error rate of 44 %. The error rate for ignorance of blank uncertainty was 87 %, improper evaluation of standard curve was 67 %, improper significant figures were 60 %, and insufficient information for Type B evaluation was 50 %. The error rate for provincial and higher-level institutions was 48 %, while the error rate for institutions below the provincial level was 43 %. The difference between the two error rates was not statistically significant ( p = 0.523). There is an urgent need to improve the rationality of measurement uncertainty evaluation in medicine and health field, and to strengthen the education and academic communication through national and international cooperation. Abstract:This Brief Guide reintroduces readers to the main concepts and technical tools used for the evaluation and expression of measurement uncertainty, including both classical and Bayesian statistical methods. The general approach is the same that was adopted by the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM): quantities whose values are surrounded by uncertainty are modeled as random variables, which enables the application of a wide range of techniques from probability and statistics to the evaluation of measurement uncertainty. All the methods presented are illustrated with examples involving real measurement results from a wide range of fields of chemistry and related sciences, ranging from classical analytical chemistry as practiced at the beginning to the 20th century, to contemporary studies of isotopic compositions of the elements and clinical trials. The supplementary material offers profusely annotated computer codes that allow the readers to reproduce all the calculations underlying the results presented in the examples.

Abstract:According to the ISO standard “Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement” and the technical measurement specification of China “Evaluation and Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement”,general procedure for evaluating uncertainties of thermocouples based temperature measurement system was deduced in this study.Taking a typical thermocouples system as an example,detailed steps of calculating its uncertainties were presented first,and then the influence of each uncertainty component was analyzed.At last,relevant measures for reducing uncertainties were put forward aiming at optimizing the performance of the temperature measurement system using thermocouples.

Abstract:The traditional measurement theory interprets the variance as the dispersion of a measured value, which is actually contrary to a general mathematical concept that the variance of a constant is 0. This paper will fully demonstrate that the variance in measurement theory is actually the evaluation of probability interval of an error instead of the dispersion of a measured value, point out the key point of mistake in the traditional interpretation, and fully interpret a series of changes in conceptual logic and processing method brought about by this new concept.

Abstract:Aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties can be represented probabilistically in mechanical systems. However, the distribution parameters of epistemic uncertainties are also uncertain due to sparsely available or inaccurate uncertainty information. Therefore, a unified reliability measure method that considers uncertainties of input variables and their distribution parameters simultaneously is proposed. The uncertainty information for distribution parameters of epistemic uncertainties could be as a result of insufficient data or interval information, which is represented with evidence theory. The probability density function of uncertain distribution parameters is constructed through fusing insufficient data and interval information based on a Gaussian interpolation algorithm, and the epistemic uncertainties are represented using a weighted sum of probability variables based on discrete distribution parameters. The reliability index considering aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties is calculated around the most probable point. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through comparison with the Monte Carlo method in the engineering example of a crank-slider mechanism and composite laminated plate.

Abstract:There are mainly two methodologies dealing with uncertainty measurement issue in rough set theory: pure rough set approach and information theory approach. Pure rough set approach is based on the concepts of accuracy, roughness and approximation accuracy proposed by Pawlak. Information theory approach is based on Shannon’s entropy or its variants. Several authors have extended the information theory approach into incomplete information systems. However, there are few studies on extending the pure rough set approach to incomplete information systems. This paper focuses on constructing uncertainty measures in incomplete information systems by pure rough set approach. Three types of definitions of lower and upper approximations and corresponding uncertainty measurement concepts including accuracy, roughness and approximation accuracy are investigated. Theoretical analysis indicates that two of the three types can be used to evaluate the uncertainty in incomplete information systems. Experiments on incomplete real-life data sets have been conducted to test the two selected types (the first type and the third type) of uncertainty measures. Results show that the two types of uncertainty measures are effective.

Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making

Abstract:Uncertainty theory is an area in axiomatic mathematics recently proposed by Professor Baoding Liu and aiming to deal with belief degrees. Retrieving 1004 journal articles from the Web of Science database between 2008 and 2019, and utilizing CiteSpace and Pajek software, we analyze the publications per year and by geographical distribution, productive scholars and their cooperation, key journals, highly cited articles and main paths of the field. In this way, seven key sub-fields of uncertainty theory and their research potential are derived. The results show the following: (1) The literature on uncertainty theory follows a linear growth trend, involves an extensive network of 1000 scholars worldwide and is published in 300 journals, indicating thus that uncertainty theory has become increasingly attractive, and its academic influence is gradually expanding. (2) Seven key sub-fields of uncertainty theory have clearly been identified, including the axiomatic system, uncertain programming, uncertain sets, uncertain logic, uncertain differential equations, uncertain risk analysis, and uncertain processes. Among them, uncertain differential equations and programming are the two main sub-fields with the largest numbers of published papers. Furthermore, for evaluating the research potential of sub-fields, maturity and recent attention indicators are calculated using the citations, total number of publications, quantity of most cited literature and half-life. Based on these indicators, uncertain processes shows the greatest development potential, and has remained a hot topic in recent years, being mainly concentrated on the uncertain renewal reward process, optimal control of discrete-time uncertain systems, and uncertain linear quadratic optimal control. Additionally, uncertain risk analysis is ranked second, and focuses on the analysis of expected losses, investment risk, and structural reliability of uncertain systems.

Abstract:A covering information system as the generalization of an information system is an important model in the field of artificial intelligence. Uncertainty measurement is a critical evaluating tool. This paper investigates uncertainty measurement for a covering information system. The concept of information structures in a covering information system is first described by using set vectors. Then, dependence between information structures in a covering information system is introduced. Next, the axiom definition of granularity measure of uncertainty for covering information systems is proposed by means of its information structures, and based on this axiom definition, information granulation and rough entropy in a covering information system are proposed. Moreover, information entropy and information amount in a covering information system are also considered. Finally, we conduct a numerical experiment on the congressional voting records data set that comes from UCI Repository of machine learning databases, and based on this numerical experiment, effectiveness analysis from the angle of statistics is given to evaluate the performance of uncertainty measurement for a covering information system. These results will be helpful for understanding the essence of uncertainty in a covering information system.

Abstract:As an important support for test and control projects, sensor’s performance is directly related to the accuracy of the measurement. To fully analyze the sources of measurement uncertainty for a surface acoustic wave micro-pressure sensor, in this study the Monte Carlo method and Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement to evaluate measurement uncertainty of sensors are used, the sensing experiment was conducted and the measurement addition model was established. We determined the source of measurement uncertainty for a surface acoustic wave micro-pressure sensor. The results show that the Monte Carlo method can obtain a more reliable and accurate inclusion interval in the measurement uncertainty evaluation of a surface acoustic wave micro-pressure sensor.

Abstract:There exist uncertainties in rough set,and how to measure these uncertainties is a valuable problem to study.The basic methods for measuring uncertainty in rough set can not distinguish different granularity of partitions.According to the definitions of accuracy of rough set and information entropy,this paper presented a new method for measuring uncertainty in rough set,and proved that this rough entropy monotonously increases while the partition granularity decreases.The new rough entropy can measure not only the size of uncertainty region in rough set but also the partition granularity.A practical example shows that this new method is effective.

Abstract:An information system as a database that represents relationships between objects and attributes is an important mathematical model. An interval-valued information system is a generalized model of single-valued information systems. As important evaluation tools in the field of machine learning, measures of uncertainty can quantify the dependence and similarity between two targets. However, the existing measures of uncertainty for interval-valued information systems have not been thoroughly researched. This paper is devoted to the study of new measures of uncertainty for an interval-valued information system. Information structures are first introduced in a given interval-valued information system. Then, the dependence between two information structures is depicted. Next, new measures of uncertainty for an interval-valued information system are investigated by using the information structures. As an application of the proposed measures, the rough entropy of a rough set is proposed by means of information granulation. Finally, a numerical experiment on the Face recognition dataset is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed measures, and a statistical effectiveness analysis is conducted. The results are helpful for understanding the essence of uncertainty in interval-valued information systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to find the metewands for multivariate measurement results.One-dimensional uncertainty theory was extended to multivariate form,and the multivariate uncertainty transfer rule was derived from the uncertainty theory and multivariate statistical analysis.This paper also describes the representation and geometrical meaning of the metewands to multivariate measurement results using multivariate uncertainty theory.The multivariate uncertainties evaluation method of common multivariate measurements,such as equal precision individual multivariate measurements and unequal precision individual multivariate measurements,were also provided.Analyses and simulations show that this theoretical system can be used for uncertainty evaluations of multivariate measurements.

Abstract:Uncertainty measurements underlie the system interaction and data learning. Their relevant studies are extensive for the single-valued decision systems, but become relatively less for the interval-valued decision systems. Thus, three-level and three-way uncertainty measurements of the interval-valued decision systems are proposed, mainly by systematically constructing vertical-horizontal weighted entropies. Firstly, the interval-valued decision systems are endowed with three-level structures, including Micro-Bottom, Meso-Middle, and Macro-Top. Secondly, a three-level decomposition is hierarchically made for the existing conditional entropy. Thirdly, three-way weighted entropies are systematically and hierarchically constructed at the three levels, and they achieve their hierarchy, systematicness, algorithm, boundedness, and granulation monotonicity/non-monotonicity. The three-level and three-way weighted entropies deepen and extend the conditional entropy, and they realize the ingenious criss-cross informatization for the interval-valued decision systems. Their effectiveness of uncertainty measurements is ultimately verified by table examples and data experiments.

Abstract:A knowledge base is an important notion of rough set theory. A tolerance knowledge base is its generalization. Measures of uncertainty as important evaluation tools in the fields of machine learning can measure the dependence and similarity between two targets. This paper investigates uncertainty measurement for a tolerance knowledge base by using its knowledge structure. The knowledge structure of a given tolerance knowledge base is first introduced by means of set vectors. Then, the dependence and independence between knowledge structures of tolerance knowledge bases are depicted. Next, the measurement uncertainty of tolerance knowledge bases is investigated. Finally, to obtain two tolerance knowledge bases with additional data, two information systems from the UCI Repository of machine learning databases are selected to construct two numerical experiments, and an effectiveness analysis is performed from the perspective of statistics to show the feasibility of the proposed measures.

Abstract:Engineering design under uncertainty has gained considerable attention in recent years. A variety of reliability analysis strategies and methodologies are taken into account and applied increasingly to accommodate uncertainties. There exist two different types of uncertainties in practical engineering application: aleatory uncertainty, which is classified as objective and irreducible uncertainty with sufficient information on input uncertainty data and epistemic uncertainty, which is a subjective and reducible uncertainty that stems from a lack of knowledge on input uncertainty data. The nature of uncertainty depends on the mathematical theory within which problem situations are formalized. When sufficient data is available, probability theory is very effective to quantify uncertainty. However, when data is scarce or there is lack of information, the probabilistic methodology may not be appropriate. Among several alternative tools, possibility theory and evidence theory have proved to be computationally efficient and stable tools for reliability analysis under aleatory and/or epistemic uncertainty involved in engineering systems. Thus this chapter first attempts to give a better understanding of uncertainty in engineering design with a holistic view of its classifications, theories and design consideration, and then discusses general topics of foundations and applications of possibility theory and evidence theory. The overview includes theoretical research, computational development and performability improvement about possibilistic and evidential methodologies in the area of reliability during recent years, and it especially reveals the capability and characteristics of quantifying uncertainty from different angles. Finally, perspectives on future research directions are stated.
