Abstract:Based on the microstructure of concrete,the time dependent temperature behavior of normal and high-performance concrete during construction was investigated,along with the in-depth research on the continuously changing physical and mechanical properties of concrete at early age.Considering material and microstructure characteristics of concrete,the mechanism,analytical method and control of early age cracking of concrete structures were studied.A method to predict and control concrete cracking was proposed.The damage modeling of the crack propagation was established.Based on the theoretical and experiment research,the development of cement hydration,temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical and fracture properties of concrete at early age were systematically evaluated.With considering the influence of shrinkage,temperature,creep,ultimate tensile strain and elastic modulus on early age cracking of concrete,an incremental method was established to calculate the stress development in concrete structures.The analytical results agree well with both the laboratory test results and the observations from actual construction projects.The research results show that the analysis of early age cracking of concrete should be based on a dynamic and systematic investigation on the temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical properties and structure characteristics of concrete.The proposed early age cracking analysis model of concrete fits well with the experiment results.The application of theoretical model and numerical simulation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis.

Abstract:To investigate the causes of cracks in wet joints of continuous concrete box girders, we performed in situ analysis of the temperature and strain field of wet-joint concrete for a sea-crossing bridge under construction in China after casting. We developed a numerical model to compare with the field tests. The numerical results agree well with those measured in the field. Thermal stress due to the heat of hydration in concrete is the main factor causing cracks, followed by concrete shrinkage. Furthermore, we investigated some measures to minimize and control the occurrence of cracks, such as optimizing the concrete mix ratio and lowering the casting temperature of wet concrete.

Abstract:Concrete cracks due to shrinkage, changes of temperature and humidity and other reasons may impair the structural integrity and durability of concrete structures. To relieve the tensile strains and prevent unexpected cracks, one strategy is to intentionally set joints (namely control joints) at appropriate locations within the concrete members. In this paper, the validity and the major influencing factors of the control joints were studied. Firstly, in total eighteen slabs, including sixteen with control joints and the other two without control joints, were constructed and tested. Different concrete mix proportions, joint locations and depths, as well as the reinforcement ratios were considered. The concrete slabs were tested for 9 months with the complete process of the initiation and development of the concrete cracks in the slabs recorded. Secondly, for the purpose of numerical analysis, material properties of concrete were tested, using which numerical simulation and parametric study were conducted. It was found that the initiation and development of cracks in concrete slabs may be simulated by means of numerical modeling techniques. Cracks in concrete slabs can be to a large extent effectively regulated and the random occurrence of cracks can be prevented. Finally, the generated knowledge and the modeling technology were applied into a real project with tight restrictions on concrete cracks. By properly setting control joints according to the numerical simulation results the cracks were well controlled. © 2010 ASCE.

Abstract:Temperature stress is the main problem faced by ultra-long concrete structure, how to accurately simulate the structural temperature effect and take effective measures to control the crack generation is the key to deal with this kind of problem. Based on the finite element analysis and practical engineering application of ultra-long concrete structures, the calculation method of structural temperature difference and the determination principle of key parameters were proposed, and a new method of crack-control was also introduced. The analysis shows that the finite element modeling can reveal temperature variation effect effectively and reasonably. The proposing floor elevation zone can weaken the impact of temperature stress, and avoid ultra-long concrete structure cracking.

Abstract:The data of resistant to stress of concrete strength has been collected in construction engineering.The static state to keep the square diagram analysis method and the dynamic state single value respectively-move very bad method have been adopted in quality control of the concrete strength.The assessment using static state analysis method has advantages of direct perception on the concrete strength as well as simple.Under the same concrete design strength,the molds are dismantled with different time will resulted in changing of assurance rate of the concrete strength corresponding to the changing of assurance rate coefficient t,because of the influence of various uncertainties. The single value control method aims verifying the process of concrete strength quality,when R_s>5.0 MPa,the quality and bone of the concrete material to anticipate of contain the amount of water variety should be adjusted,while R_m>2.5 MPa,the creation method and the possibility of molding tool deformation should be checked.

Abstract:As relatively large size,mass concrete releases large hydration heat when the cement is condensing.Without attention and control during the construction process,it is likely to result in excessive temperature difference between inside and outside the concrete,and cause mass concrete crack which threatens the safety and durability of the concrete structures.Therefore,it is necessary to study and control the cracks by temperature change in mass concrete.In this paper,the mechanism of mass concrete temperature cracks and various factors of impact in cracks development was analyzed,control measures of temperature cracks was studied.Referred existing mass concrete thermal stress calculation and forecasting methods,effective measures to reduce the temperature cracks of mass concrete was put forward from the concrete mix design and construction process of monitoring.

Abstract:In this paper the major types of piers, abutment and foundation in substructure of RC or PC bridges in China are summarized. The main types of defects occurring in substructure of concrete bridges including uneven settlement of foundation, lower carrying capacity, durability defects of reinforced concrete and cracking of concrete pier columns as well as abutments and cap beams have been pointed out. In addition to the concrete pier, abutment and foundation, the causes and mechanisms of these defects were analyzed from different points of view such as design, construction, maintenance and operation management. The relevant maintenance and strengthening methods were discussed and put forward, such as the foundation enlargement method, adding pile method and artificial foundation reinforcement method for concrete and RC pier or abutment foundation, the method of RC pier columns reinforced by RC hoop or FRP for piers, the reinforcement method of pasting steel strip or plate, the method reinforced by external prestressed tendons and additional support columns method for RC cap beams, the method of reducing load, the method of reducing fill height by adding numbers of approach spans, the support beam method and the method reinforced by auxiliary retaining wall for RC abutments. It is possible to recover the function of the RC or PC bridges and enhance their durability and load carrying capacity by employing corresponding maintenance and strengthening measures. At the same time, vehicle overload should be strictly limited according to the structural safety matters.

Abstract:The damage of concrete cover in reinforced concrete structures induced by reinforcing steel corrosion is investigated in this study. The damage process of the concrete cover can be divided into two distinct stages: the non-cracking stage and the partial cracking stage. An analytical model based on damage mechanics and elastic mechanics is developed to predict the concrete cracking due to steel corrosion. Based on this model, the expansive pressure and the radial loss of steel bar are discussed. Parametric studies are carried out to examine the effects of the correlative factors on the expansive pressure and the steel loss.

Abstract:The relation of tensile strength, temperature stress and concrete fissure was researched firstly, then it showed the causes of late cracks on concrete by theoretical calculation, the result provided a simple theoretical calculation method to avoid concrete fissure. The construction methods to control the fissure was proposed: early strengthening cooling, managing maximum temperature of concrete through lately heat preservation, and overtime to preserving concrete moisture for controlling the late strain on mass concrete. This research has a great significance for controlling the fissure.

Abstract:This paper reviews the cracking-altered transport properties and durability performance of structural concretes. To this purpose, this paper addresses firstly the mass exchange and transfer in single cracks, including the ion adsorption and dissolution processes of fracture surface. Then, the effect of multi-cracks is investigated successively through the geometry description, theoretical modeling of transport properties and the relevant experiments. Afterwards, the crack control with respect to durability is reviewed via experimental study and technical specifications. From this comprehensive review, it is shown that (1) the liquid flow is determinant for the mass ex0change and transfer in crack and further study should be aimed at the drying-wetting actions, (2) the transport through multi-cracks highlights the connectivity and the different roles of crack opening; (3) rational crack control on loading cracks should extend to concrete cover quality and thickness in terms of external actions.
