Abstract:To investigate the causes of cracks in wet joints of continuous concrete box girders, we performed in situ analysis of the temperature and strain field of wet-joint concrete for a sea-crossing bridge under construction in China after casting. We developed a numerical model to compare with the field tests. The numerical results agree well with those measured in the field. Thermal stress due to the heat of hydration in concrete is the main factor causing cracks, followed by concrete shrinkage. Furthermore, we investigated some measures to minimize and control the occurrence of cracks, such as optimizing the concrete mix ratio and lowering the casting temperature of wet concrete.

Abstract:Based on the microstructure of concrete,the time dependent temperature behavior of normal and high-performance concrete during construction was investigated,along with the in-depth research on the continuously changing physical and mechanical properties of concrete at early age.Considering material and microstructure characteristics of concrete,the mechanism,analytical method and control of early age cracking of concrete structures were studied.A method to predict and control concrete cracking was proposed.The damage modeling of the crack propagation was established.Based on the theoretical and experiment research,the development of cement hydration,temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical and fracture properties of concrete at early age were systematically evaluated.With considering the influence of shrinkage,temperature,creep,ultimate tensile strain and elastic modulus on early age cracking of concrete,an incremental method was established to calculate the stress development in concrete structures.The analytical results agree well with both the laboratory test results and the observations from actual construction projects.The research results show that the analysis of early age cracking of concrete should be based on a dynamic and systematic investigation on the temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical properties and structure characteristics of concrete.The proposed early age cracking analysis model of concrete fits well with the experiment results.The application of theoretical model and numerical simulation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis.

Abstract:A number of empirical,analytical and numerical models for describing the cracking process of concrete induced by steel corrosion are reviewed.The experimental study is a direct method to investigate the corrosion-induced concrete cracking.But due to the limitation of experimental data,the empirical models are generally the simple mathematical expressions and cannot be universally valid.The analytical models can describe the concrete cracking process of a thick-walled cylinder subjected to an internal uniform pressure due to steel corrosion.However,the current analytical is not yet able to handle the uneven corrosion situation and consider the influence of the external loading.Finite element analysis is an efficient way to study the corrosion-induced concrete cracking with the real uneven distribution of corrosion around the parameter of steel bar as the input displacement on concrete cover.Many aspects,such as the quantitative description of porous zone at the interface of steel bar and concrete,the model of uneven steel corrosion distribution,the concrete components subject to both loading and steel corrosion,the influence of stirrups on corrosion-induced concrete cracking and so on,need further researches.

Abstract:Concrete cracks due to shrinkage, changes of temperature and humidity and other reasons may impair the structural integrity and durability of concrete structures. To relieve the tensile strains and prevent unexpected cracks, one strategy is to intentionally set joints (namely control joints) at appropriate locations within the concrete members. In this paper, the validity and the major influencing factors of the control joints were studied. Firstly, in total eighteen slabs, including sixteen with control joints and the other two without control joints, were constructed and tested. Different concrete mix proportions, joint locations and depths, as well as the reinforcement ratios were considered. The concrete slabs were tested for 9 months with the complete process of the initiation and development of the concrete cracks in the slabs recorded. Secondly, for the purpose of numerical analysis, material properties of concrete were tested, using which numerical simulation and parametric study were conducted. It was found that the initiation and development of cracks in concrete slabs may be simulated by means of numerical modeling techniques. Cracks in concrete slabs can be to a large extent effectively regulated and the random occurrence of cracks can be prevented. Finally, the generated knowledge and the modeling technology were applied into a real project with tight restrictions on concrete cracks. By properly setting control joints according to the numerical simulation results the cracks were well controlled. © 2010 ASCE.

Abstract:To enhance the service performance of concrete structures,the cracking process of concrete cover due to corrosion of reinforcement was studied. Through the analysis on the corrosion cracks in the reinforced concrete beam corroded for 18 months under loads whose concrete was mixed with chlorides, it can be concluded that the circumferential crack width has an exponential relationship with the radius. The cracking pattern and corrosion products are closely related with the stress state of reinforced concrete and the relative position between cracks and aggregates. The concrete cover mainly spalls off in layers. It can be concluded from this research that,in the analysis of working capacity of corroded reinforced concrete beam,the capacity of concrete cover at the compression edge in the shear compression zone should be ignored. And the bonding capacity between corroded steel bars and concrete should be reduced.

Abstract:The damage of concrete cover in reinforced concrete structures induced by reinforcing steel corrosion is investigated in this study. The damage process of the concrete cover can be divided into two distinct stages: the non-cracking stage and the partial cracking stage. An analytical model based on damage mechanics and elastic mechanics is developed to predict the concrete cracking due to steel corrosion. Based on this model, the expansive pressure and the radial loss of steel bar are discussed. Parametric studies are carried out to examine the effects of the correlative factors on the expansive pressure and the steel loss.

Abstract:The early-age mechanical properties and drying shrinkage of high performance concrete added with fiber were studied to investigate the development of stress in restrained concrete and predict the cracking age of concrete more precisely.An incremental representation of stress of restrained concrete ring was established based on elasticity theory in considering creep and restraint degree. Then the maximum tension stress theory was introduced to predict the cracking age of restrained concrete ring.Experimental and theoretical analysis showed that fiber addition reduced the drying shrinkage for about 2% to 20% at different ages,and the reduction decreased with age.Fiber addition also postponed the cracking age of concrete ring and narrowed the crack width.In theory,the cracking ages of the high performance concrete with and without fiber were 28 and 22 d respectively,which were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:For quite a long period, the shrinkage and crack of concrete have greatly shorted the life of structure and increased the cost of maintaining. Restraining the shrinkage and crack of concrete by using of expansive agent has been an effective controlling method since the setting of shrinkage-compensating theory. As the performances of modern concrete being influenced by the construction requests as well as varieties of cementing materials and admixtures, temperature shrinkage and self-shrinkage are main reasons to the cracking of concrete structure. With the changing of clinker minerals, the minishing of fineness of cement products and the increasing of early strength of cement, the early strength of concrete increases faster with relative changes of the parameters such as elastic modulus, creep relaxation etc, as a result, the crack trend boosts. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to promote anti-crack capability of concrete.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a study on the cracking behaviour of cast in situ reinforced concrete slabs with control joints. Material property tests were conducted to establish time-dependent concrete mechanical properties. Cast in situ reinforced concrete slabs with control joints were tested for up to 6 months to study the distribution of concrete cracks and development of concrete strains. A finite element method based model was developed, verified and used for a parametric study. It was found that using control joints can successfully regulate the concrete cracks. The slabs with longer joints suffered less cracks at the edges. The influence of the joint depth was insignificant; however, the joints cut all the way through the slabs caused higher tensile strains than those of shallower cuts. It was also found that the reinforcement ratio and concrete proportion had a significant effect on the cracking of the jointed concrete slabs. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:As relatively large size,mass concrete releases large hydration heat when the cement is condensing.Without attention and control during the construction process,it is likely to result in excessive temperature difference between inside and outside the concrete,and cause mass concrete crack which threatens the safety and durability of the concrete structures.Therefore,it is necessary to study and control the cracks by temperature change in mass concrete.In this paper,the mechanism of mass concrete temperature cracks and various factors of impact in cracks development was analyzed,control measures of temperature cracks was studied.Referred existing mass concrete thermal stress calculation and forecasting methods,effective measures to reduce the temperature cracks of mass concrete was put forward from the concrete mix design and construction process of monitoring.

Abstract:Gallery cracks occur commonly in concrete dams, but their cracking mechanism has yet to be effectively revealed. In this paper, the actual temperature, stress change history and cracking process of a gallery area were uncovered, based on the safety monitoring data of cracks in a super-high arch dam. In addition, the basic development and change laws, as well as the corresponding cracking mechanism, were analyzed, and the real causes and influential factors of cracks at the site were revealed, which will provide a reference for the prevention of cracks in similar projects in the future.

Abstract:Drying shrinkage is one of the most important inducements to concrete cracking in long structures. To investigate the phenomenon of non-uniform shrinkage and the influence of concrete mix proportion on drying shrinkage, the theory of non-linear moisture diffusion was applied to model shrinkage in the long reinforced concrete structure with the original mix proportion and the optimised one. The three-dimensional numerical simulation was implemented based on the thermal-structural coupled analysis by ANSYS, considering the solution analogy between the moisture field and the temperature field. The moisture field and shrinkage induced stress field in concrete were calculated. The results show that the minimum relative humidity is greater, and the maximum humidity gradient is smaller in the structure with the optimised mix proportion than that in the structure with the original one due to the slower moisture diffusion. Consequently, the optimisation of mix proportion improves the cracking resistance prominently, for the cracking time and crack propagation are delayed significantly.
