Abstract:As relatively large size,mass concrete releases large hydration heat when the cement is condensing.Without attention and control during the construction process,it is likely to result in excessive temperature difference between inside and outside the concrete,and cause mass concrete crack which threatens the safety and durability of the concrete structures.Therefore,it is necessary to study and control the cracks by temperature change in mass concrete.In this paper,the mechanism of mass concrete temperature cracks and various factors of impact in cracks development was analyzed,control measures of temperature cracks was studied.Referred existing mass concrete thermal stress calculation and forecasting methods,effective measures to reduce the temperature cracks of mass concrete was put forward from the concrete mix design and construction process of monitoring.

Abstract:Temperature stress is the main problem faced by ultra-long concrete structure, how to accurately simulate the structural temperature effect and take effective measures to control the crack generation is the key to deal with this kind of problem. Based on the finite element analysis and practical engineering application of ultra-long concrete structures, the calculation method of structural temperature difference and the determination principle of key parameters were proposed, and a new method of crack-control was also introduced. The analysis shows that the finite element modeling can reveal temperature variation effect effectively and reasonably. The proposing floor elevation zone can weaken the impact of temperature stress, and avoid ultra-long concrete structure cracking.

Abstract:In concrete technology, thermal cracking is a cause of major concern. Thermal cracking in mass concrete is related to both the rate of heat evolution and strength development at any time which are dependent on the historical time and temperature conditions at the particular point in the structure. In this research, reaction heat of concrete was determined with a developed cement hydration model. With the equivalent age method, accurate description of the strength growth of C40 concrete was presented. Then the thermal cracking analysis was carried out by means of the finite element program ANSYS. The analysis results were compared with the experiment results obtained in real practice. A good agreement has been noticed. This research will afford reliable support to design, construction and management of mass concrete structures in theory and practice.

Abstract:To investigate the causes of cracks in wet joints of continuous concrete box girders, we performed in situ analysis of the temperature and strain field of wet-joint concrete for a sea-crossing bridge under construction in China after casting. We developed a numerical model to compare with the field tests. The numerical results agree well with those measured in the field. Thermal stress due to the heat of hydration in concrete is the main factor causing cracks, followed by concrete shrinkage. Furthermore, we investigated some measures to minimize and control the occurrence of cracks, such as optimizing the concrete mix ratio and lowering the casting temperature of wet concrete.

Abstract:Based on the microstructure of concrete,the time dependent temperature behavior of normal and high-performance concrete during construction was investigated,along with the in-depth research on the continuously changing physical and mechanical properties of concrete at early age.Considering material and microstructure characteristics of concrete,the mechanism,analytical method and control of early age cracking of concrete structures were studied.A method to predict and control concrete cracking was proposed.The damage modeling of the crack propagation was established.Based on the theoretical and experiment research,the development of cement hydration,temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical and fracture properties of concrete at early age were systematically evaluated.With considering the influence of shrinkage,temperature,creep,ultimate tensile strain and elastic modulus on early age cracking of concrete,an incremental method was established to calculate the stress development in concrete structures.The analytical results agree well with both the laboratory test results and the observations from actual construction projects.The research results show that the analysis of early age cracking of concrete should be based on a dynamic and systematic investigation on the temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical properties and structure characteristics of concrete.The proposed early age cracking analysis model of concrete fits well with the experiment results.The application of theoretical model and numerical simulation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis.

Abstract:An analysis of the temperature distribution and heat transfer in large concrete structures in the presence of two-phase closed thermosyphons is presented to extract the heat of hydration of cement paste. The result of the analysis and experiment show that the temperature rise in the concrete during the early stages of curing under various conditions can be effectively controlled by reducing the distance between the thermosyphons and changing their operating temperature. Controlling the temperature gradients will protect massive concrete structures from thermal cracks and result in high strength and low permeability.

Abstract:A breathing method was set up to solve the problem of temperature stress in large volume concrete constructions without slots.By setting the sliding floor a breathing system was built up and the temperature stress reduced distinctly.At last combining the project example,the static and kinetic friction coefficients of the sliding floor materials were measured through experiments,and the temperature stress produced by temperature difference was computed with the FEA method.It was indicated that the breathing method could efficiently decrease the temperature stress in large volume concrete constructions.

Abstract:The temperature control experience of large-scale concrete aqueducts in China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project was introduced, such as material properties,structural design and construction measures.The cracking mechanism of the concrete aqueducts under short-term thermal stress and coupling of heat and moisture diffusion effect was illustrated as regards the features of the aqueduct with thin-walled structure.Finally,the development trends of temperature control and crack prevention of concrete aqueducts were discussed from the aspects of temperature monitoring,real-time temperature simulation and prediction,early-age concrete cracking risk prediction,construction information platform and temperature control standards for concrete aqueducts under crack-control design.

Abstract:The temperature cracks of the concre te small cavity block building(CSCBB)were studied through field investigation on existing buildings,finite element analysis and experiment on wall specimens,thus to impr ove the structural design method of crack-resisting in CSCBB from concept desig n to sectional design and to transform the structural design method of crack-resisting from perception to rationality.In this paper,the formulas for calculating horizontal force and shearing force of wall under temperature load and th e load of crack-resisting for different types of masonry walls were derived.Finally the crack-resisting design method o f wall section based on controlling s tory drift of the structure was proposed.A practical crack-resisting design of a pilot pr oject in Hangzhou has been carried ou t with satisfactory result.

Abstract:The invention relates to concrete with ultra-large volume, high strength and low hydration heat. The concrete comprises the following components in parts by weight (cube dosage kg/m3): 200-260 parts of cement, 100-160 parts of mineral powder, 80-100 parts of fly ash, 740-800 parts of fine aggregate, 1010-1050 parts of coarse aggregate, 4.0-5.0 parts of additive and 155-165 parts of water. The concrete with ultra-large volume, high strength and low hydration heat can be used to effectively reduce the hydration heat, greatly reduce the cracking risk of the large-volume concrete from the source and increase the engineering quality.

Abstract:To avoid crack of massive concrete foundation slab during the construction process of Tianjin Jinta Project, the opportune raw materials were chosen and concrete proportion was optimized.The test results show that the adiabatic temperature rise of concrete decreases due to the low hydration heat of binder containing high volume of fly ash.The full-scale model test was carried out.It is showed that the concrete proportion,placing and curing process are suitable to eliminate crack of massive concrete foundation slab of Tianjin Jinta Project.

Abstract:Concrete cracks due to shrinkage, changes of temperature and humidity and other reasons may impair the structural integrity and durability of concrete structures. To relieve the tensile strains and prevent unexpected cracks, one strategy is to intentionally set joints (namely control joints) at appropriate locations within the concrete members. In this paper, the validity and the major influencing factors of the control joints were studied. Firstly, in total eighteen slabs, including sixteen with control joints and the other two without control joints, were constructed and tested. Different concrete mix proportions, joint locations and depths, as well as the reinforcement ratios were considered. The concrete slabs were tested for 9 months with the complete process of the initiation and development of the concrete cracks in the slabs recorded. Secondly, for the purpose of numerical analysis, material properties of concrete were tested, using which numerical simulation and parametric study were conducted. It was found that the initiation and development of cracks in concrete slabs may be simulated by means of numerical modeling techniques. Cracks in concrete slabs can be to a large extent effectively regulated and the random occurrence of cracks can be prevented. Finally, the generated knowledge and the modeling technology were applied into a real project with tight restrictions on concrete cracks. By properly setting control joints according to the numerical simulation results the cracks were well controlled. © 2010 ASCE.
