Abstract:The Q420 high-strength steel pipe has been tested through pilot projects by the SGCC for its applicability and safety when applied to transmission towers.The large-span Hanjiang river-crossing towers for 500 kV transmission lines used the Q420 high-strength steel pipe as main members and three types of K-shaped nodes were tested with six specimens.An analysis was performed on the nodes under load in terms of the stress distribution on cross-section,lateral displacement of the main pipe and the ultimate stress state,which provided reliable basis for tower design and safe operation of the transmission lines.The test result indicates that the reinforcement board and the angle between the main pipe and branch pipe have significant impacts on the distribution of nodes.

Abstract:SUMMARYIn order to research ultra high voltage (UHV) transmission technology systematically, State Grid Corporation of China launched the UHV AC test base project to provide strong technical support for UHV grid construction. The facilities including UHV power supply, UHV test lines, equipments qualified field, electromagnetic environmental laboratory, climate laboratory, UHV corona cage, impulse test field were built at the test base. Much useful experience had been achieved through the construction and research in the fields of UHV electromagnetic environment, external insulation characteristic, equipment technical requirements, equipments manufactory, electrical design, construction, test, and operation. Abstract:Load control system is very important for UHV tower full-scale tests.The paper introduces primary functions and technological problems to be settled for load control system of UHV Transmission Tower Test Base.It also investigates load control system structure,hardware and software configuration,and main functions,summaries its major features.Application results show that capability of load control system can satisfy testing requirements of UHV tower tests excellently.

Abstract:Lightning stroke is the key problem for safe operation of UHV transmission line. Because of the large scale of the tower and the high operation AC voltage, the shielding design of tower became one of the most important aspects of the UHV transmission line design. This paper was based on the typical towers of China 1000 kV AC transmission line: waist-type single-circuit tower, cup-shape single-circuit tower and double-circuit tower. The lightning protection performance of all the three towers was calculated and analyzed with EGM and EMTP. The results show that the cup-shape tower performs best in the prevention of lightning shield failure while the waist-type tower performs worst. And in the prevention from back flashover, the lightning trip-out rate of the double-circuit tower is much bigger than waist-type tower and cup-shape tower, mostly because of its larger height. The lightning stroke trip-out rate of the three types of typical towers for 1000 kV transmission line were compared under different shield angles, ground slope angles and ground resistance. The results also indicate that the trip-out rate of all these types of UHV towers will rise obviously as the shield angle or ground slope angle gets larger.

Abstract:UHVDC transmission lines in China have to pass through a lot of mountainous regions where lightning strokes frequently occur, thus the shielding failure outage rate of UHVDC transmission line adopting conventional T-type towers and passing through mountainous region is high. For this reason, a new type of tower possessing a new type of tower head, namely the Z-type tower, is designed for the part of UHVDC transmission line from Xiluodu to Zhexi, which passes through mountainous regions. The lightning withstand performances of back flashover and shielding failure of T-type tower and Z-type tower as well as their impacting factors are researched by the simulation in which the calculation model of shielding failure is established by electrical geometry model （EGM） and the calculation model of back flashover is established by ATP-EMTP, meanwhile combining CDEGS software with formula method the electromagnetic environment of Z-type tower is assessed. Research results show that the Z-type tower＇s lightning withstand performances of back flashover is high, therefore the overall lightning withstand performance of Z-type tower is evidently better than that of T-type tower. Under the lowest nominal height of tower, the electromagnetic environment parameters of Z-type tower can reach national environmental standards and are better than those ofT-type tower. Thus it can be seen that the Z-type tower is more suitable to be applied in mountainous regions than T-type tower.

Abstract:Providing a new 500 kV electricity supply to Zhoushan Islands off the east coast of China in 2018 involved building the world's two tallest transmission towers. The 380 m typhoon-resistant towers enabled high-voltage cables to span 2.7 km over the East China Sea. To reduce wind loads, the towers were made from a tubular steel filled with steel angle-reinforced, self-compacting concrete. This paper describes the design and detailing of the innovative composite members and joints specifically developed for the project. It aims to serve as a design reference for future long-span electrical transmission towers.

Abstract:From point view of the world, UHV transmission technology will develop continuously. In China, the planning UHV grid is composed of 1000 kV AC transmission systems and ±800 kV DC transmission systems. Based on the differences of technical and economic characteristics of UHVAC/UHVDC, their applicable occasions in China are first compared. Then, some technical problems of UHVAC/UHVDC, such as lightning protection of transmission lines, reliability, stability, and electromagnetic environment of power grid, insulator selection, and DC/AC coordination, are compared respectively. Main conclusions are therefore made as follows: UHVAC is mainly applicable to short-distance and large-capacity electricity transmission and the network construction of a higher voltage grade. UHVDC is mainly applicable to long-distance and large-capacity electricity transmission with clear transmission end and receiving end, and is also applicable to the interconnections of some regional and provincial power grids. The positive transmission lines of UHVDC are more likely to be damaged by lightning than the negative ones. The case that the electricity transmission to a certain region through several UHVAC transmission lines from the same large scale power plant, should be avoided. More attentions should be paid to the safety and stability status of 'multi-infeed HVDC transmission systems' with UHVDC and EHVDC transmission lines. It is suggested that composite insulators of large tonnage and high intensity are prior to be used in the UHV transmission lines in China. Pollution proof glass insulators and composite insulators should be combined in use, which will avoid the brittle fracture of composite insulators.

Abstract:According to the development trend of power network in China, it is pointed out that the development of UHV AC transmission is not only an effictive approach to meet the growing demand of electric power, but also the requirement of improving power network structure and promoting the nation-wide power grid interconnection. Detailed discussion is then presented on several controversial problems existing in the UHV AC transmission field, including: knowledge about insulation characteristics of gas interval, selection of an appropriate voltage level, effective prevention measures for abnormal lightning trip-out percentage, application of composite insulators in the prevention of dirty flashover, control of environmental influence caused by UHV transmission lines and substations, superiority of UHV in economy and relationship between UHV AC transmission and DC transmission. In the construction of domestic UHV AC transmission, the actual condition of UHV AC transmission engineering in China should be considered, and on the basis of using the research results of former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), Japan and United States for reference, and more attention should be paid to the research on UHV transmission technology and the development of related equipments.

Abstract:In this paper, a 1:5 scaled tower model for a typical 220 kV single-circuit power transmission tower with hybrid slab foundation has been designed and tested. The scaled tower model was tested under the movement of horizontal ground surface stretching with normal working loading conditions. One of the main objectives of this research is to investigate the stability of the power transmission tower subjected to horizontal ground movement by using hybrid slab foundation. The deformations of the tested tower model and stresses and strains within the different structural members of the tower and the reinforced concrete slab of the foundation have been fully measured. A large mount comprehensive test data has been generated. The research clearly indicated that compared to the isolated tower leg’s foundation the proposed hybrid slab foundation has very good resistance, in terms of truss members’ deformations and stresses, to the ground movement.

Abstract:The lightning performance of quadruple-circuit transmission line with dual voltage 500/220 kV on the same tower is calculated and analyzed with EGM(Electro-geometrical Model) and EMTP(Elector-Magnetic Transient Program).And the effects of fielding angle,nominal height of the tower,ground elevation,grounding resistance and the way of laying additional shield wires are discussed in detail.In accordance with 500 kV and 220 kV transmission lines on the same tower,the results show that the priority is different for improving lightning performance,namely,the shielding failure is relatively serious for 500 kV transmission line,and the back flashover is relatively serious for 220 kV transmission line.Finally,several special methods that may be used to improve or degrade lightning performance are presented,such as reducing nominal height of the tower,using negative fielding angle and setting up additional shield wires.

Abstract:An ultra-high voltage(UHV) corona test cage has been constructed in the UHV AC test base of SGCC,which is situated in Wuhan.The basic theory and structure of the cage is introduced.The cross-section size and the length of UHV AC cage is 8 m×8 m and 35 m respectively.It can be used to study the corona performance of 1～12 split bundles.The source of test cage is an 800 kV AC test transformer and the simulated maximal voltage level is AC 1 500 kV.The measuring methods for audible noise(AN) and radio interference(RI) of conductor in test cage are analyzed.With the UHV test cage,corona effect of the bundle used in 1 000 kV UHV AC test demonstration project of China is measured.The AN generation power and RI excitation function of UHV bundle are obtained by the UHV cage test data.It supplies the foundation for the prediction of AN and RI of UHV transmission lines in China.

Abstract:500 kV double-circuit vertical arrangement compact transmission line was introduced firstly,which was mainly used in double-circuit transmission line construction with the limit of width and height. Aimed to the unknown electromagnetic environment of this compact transmission line with phases distance compressed,and its higher requirement of electromagnetic environment in densely populated area, the power frequency electric field, audible noise and radio interference were calculated and analyzed,compared with other regular types of towers. Conclusion has been drawn that the electromagnetic environment of this new compact line could better meet the design requirement. Finally,the factors that influence electromagnetic environment were also studied to provide the basis for the optimization of tower design scheme.

Abstract:Gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) possesses advantages of large transmission capacity, high reliability and environmental friendliness, but there are no mature products and application cases of UHV GIL worldwide. It is urgent to research its key technologies and engineering application. For engineering application of UHV GIL, insulation design, current flowing capability and SF6/N2 gas mixture scheme were investigated in this paper. Control principles for designing electric field strength of gap and insulator were put forward. Electric field distribution of tri-post insulator, the key insulation component of UHV GIL, was simulated and particle traps were set to improve insulation performance. Structure of electric contact of conductor rod was designed. Current flowing capability and temperature rise of UHV GIL was examined. To reduce environment effect, insulation characteristics, requirement of gas mixture ratio, gas pressure and design field strength of SF6/N2 gas mixture were discussed. Application of environmentally friendly gases for SF6 replacement was further prospected. Based on advancement of key technologies, typical structure of UHV GIL standard unit and its main technical parameters were obtained. Key components, including insulators, particle traps and enclosures were developed to assemble the UHV GIL standard unit. Relying on a real UHVAC transmission project, application solution of GIL replacing partly GIS busbar was conducted, inaugurating pilot engineering application of UHV GIL products in several UHV substations. In general, the key technologies of UHVAC GIL have been mastered in China, and these pilot applications provide important technical reference for UHV GIL crossing river in a GIL pipeline corridor project.

Abstract:1000 kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) AC power transmission system is being constructed in China. UHV corona cage is an indispensable testing facility for the research of the electromagnetic environment problem caused by the corona effects of UHV transmission lines. In this paper, the principles for the selection of the key parameters of the UHV corona cage are analyzed in detail. According to the calculation results, the cross-section size of UHV AC cage is recommended to be 8 m times 8 m, and the length of the middle measuring and end shielding section, 25 m and 5 m respectively. Finally, a novel cage end structure is proposed for increasing the length of uniform surface gradients section.

Abstract:With the diversification of the demand for new construction and reconstruction of transmission lines, the capacity increasing conductor will be gradually applied to AC/ DC transmission lines of various voltage levels. In existing transmission line design, the sag of transmission line are evaluated by empirical formula, which is verified merely in a 60 meters small span test in laboratory, and is quite different from the actual project. To understand the temperature rise and sag characteristics of typical conductors and provide basis for the selection of transmission line conductor, the first 200 m large span transmission line on actual strain tower for full scale test is built in Kunming UHV engineering technology lab to study on the temperature rise and sag characteristics of 4 kinds of conductors, including 1 kind of ordinary aluminum clad steel conductor and 3 kinds of typical augmented capacity conductor: carbon-fiber aluminum conductor composite core (ACCC), aluminum clad invar core aluminum alloy wire, and aluminum clad steel core aluminum alloy wire. The results show that ACCC and aluminum clad invar core aluminum alloy wire have better arc sag characteristics, and there are obvious temperature transfer points. The temperature transfer point of ACCC is about 75°C, and the transfer point of aluminum clad invar core aluminum alloy wire is about 105°C.
