Spatial Structure and Temporal Evolution of a Dayside Poloidal ULF Wave Event

Abstract:We investigate a strong poloidal ultralow frequency wave event in the noon sector observed by THEMIS and LANL satellites on 29 May 2007. From 07:00 to 10:00 UT, the five THEMIS satellites that were lined up in similar outbound orbits consecutively observed narrow-band poloidal pulsations from 10 to 4 mHz. The wave activity covered a broad region from 09:00 to 13:30 LT azimuthally and 5 to 9.5 R-E radially. The radial extent and power of the wave decreased with time from 07:00 to 08:30 UT, suggesting a decay process with a time scale of hours. In the region outside the plasmapause, the wave power was observed to decrease then increase from 08:00 to 09:00 UT with a rapid temporal variation. The decrease in wave power, which suggests fast decay (within one hour), might be related to the evolution of the plasmasphere. The subsequent increase could possibly be related to a regeneration process by a surface wave at the plasmapause. We suggest that a coupling between the surface wave and the resonance of the field line around the plasmapause takes place when the density inside the plasmapause is twice the density outside the plasmapause. Abstract:Combined Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED)/TIMED Doppler interferometer horizontal winds, Global Positioning System Total Electron Content maps, and Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate electron density profiles are utilized to study the westward zonal wavenumber 1 quasi‐6‐day planetary wave in both the neutral atmosphere and F region ionosphere under solar minimum conditions in 2009. It is found that the zonal (meridional) wind perturbations maximize (minimize) in the geographic equatorial mesosphere and lower thermosphere region and are in phase (out of phase) between hemispheres, which agrees well with both the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite/high‐resolution Doppler imager wind observations and (1, 1) Rossby normal mode. Analysis of the Total Electron Content maps and Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate electron density profiles shows that the F region ionosphere exhibits wave spectra and temporal variations that are consistent with those of the neutral atmosphere. Specifically, the 6‐day oscillation in electron density is the highest during 1200–1800 LT in the equatorial ionospheric anomaly region (~20° geomagnetic latitude), with a minimum amplitude at the equator, which agrees well with the F region fountain effect. At 300 km, the amplitude of the electron density oscillation reaches ~1.2 × 104 cm−3, which accounts for ~14% of the background value. In addition, the F2 layer electron peak density and peak height also exhibit corresponding oscillations with amplitudes of ~9 × 104 cm−3 and ~12 km, respectively. The current work provides clear evidence for F region ionospheric responses to planetary waves in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere region.
Six-Day Periodic Variation In Equatorial Ionization Anomaly Region

Abstract:Using the location of equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest derived from GPS observations and CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellite measurement, along with the F2 layer peak height (hmF2), critical frequency (foF2), and the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) in India and China longitudinal sectors, we found the obvious 6-day oscillation in these ionospheric parameters during 16 April to 31 May 2003 and 21 September to 26 October 2004. The tidal amplitudes of EEJ are enhanced during the positive phase of the 6-day waves and are weakened during its negative phase. Since the strong 6-day planetary wave activities in mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region during these two events have been reported by earlier studies, this 6-day oscillation in EIA region can be due to the interaction of enhanced planetary waves with the tidal wind. Moreover, the temporal variations of this 6-day wave are consistent and in phase in these ionospheric parameters, indicating that the 6-day planetary wave modulates electric fields via E region wind dynamo, thereby altering the vertical height and horizontal distribution of electron densities through upward E x B drift, which results in the periodical variations in these ionospheric parameters in F region. These observation results provide insight into how the 6-day planetary waves modulate the ionospheric morphological structure.

Abstract:Quasiperiodic (QP) emissions are whistler‐mode electromagnetic waves observed in the Earth's inner magnetosphere whose intensity has a nearly periodic time modulation with typical modulation periods on the order of minutes. Some events exhibit, on top of the main modulation period, an additional fine inner modulation with modulation periods on the order of seconds. We use high‐resolution multi‐component electromagnetic wave data obtained by the Van Allen Probes spacecraft to investigate one such event. Detailed wave analysis demonstrates that the fine inner modulation is due to a wave packet bouncing back and forth between the hemispheres. The presence of a density duct is important for the formation of the event, as demonstrated by the increased ratio of wave power propagating away from the equator (a tentative source region) within the duct. The main QP modulation period corresponds to the plasma number density modulation observed just outside the plasmasphere.

Abstract:Spacecraft and ground‐based observations are used to study characteristics of ultralow frequency waves in the plasma sheet from the postmidnight to morning local time sectors in the terrestrial magnetosphere. Field line resonance (FLR) type oscillations with discrete and latitude‐dependent frequencies in the ranges of 1.7–2.0 and 3.0–3.2 mHz are observed in situ by the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms C (THEMIS C), THEMIS D, THEMIS E, and GOES 12 spacecraft. The ground resonant oscillations in the two mentioned frequency bands are also observed at corresponding spacecraft footprints. Spectral peaks at these frequencies are observed by nearly all ground stations from premidnight to noon, with the larger‐amplitude oscillations occurring in a narrow range of latitudes (3°–6°). The largest wave activity occurred in the magnetic local time of ∼05:00. The ground observations indicate westward propagation for the 1.8 mHz wave activity with an azimuthal wave number of about −2.6. The Poynting vectors from the THEMIS spacecraft show weak net energy flow (antifield aligned) toward the ionosphere of the southern hemisphere. They also show notable net energy flow toward the west. A possible interpretation is that the observed FLRs are driven by cavity and waveguide modes in the nightside outer magnetosphere after a period of long‐lasting northward interplanetary magnetic field.

Abstract:By using atmospheric wind data in the mesopause and lower thermosphere (MLT) region, features of seasonal variations in the quasi-6-day wave (6DW) at different latitudes are analyzed, and modulation of the 6DW by the diurnal tide and solar 27-day period isdiscussed. The data used in the analysis are extracted from a wind dataset collected by a meteor radar chain from December 2008 to November 2017. The meteor radar chain includes four stations, in Mohe, Beijing, Wuhan, and Sanya. Features of seasonal variations in the 6DW indicate that in summer the 6DW is usually strongest during July and August, followed by stronger variations in January and April. At certain altitudes over Wuhan and Sanya, the 6DW is slightly different in different years and altitudes. In our analysis of seasonal variations in the 6DW, we find that it is generally affected by annual oscillations and semiannual oscillations. The annual oscillations of the 6DW in the mid-low latitudes are modulated by the quasibiennial oscillation in the diurnal tide, resulting in seasonal features that are different from those at other latitudes. In addition, the 6DW amplitude at mid-high latitudes has a significant 27-day solar rotation variation, which was prominent in 2016.

Abstract:The Sporadic E layer or Es is an ionospheric phenomenon characterized by enhancements in electron density within 90–120 km above the Earth's surface. Based on the wind shear theory, the formation of Es layers is associated with vertical shears in the horizontal wind, in the presence of the Earth's magnetic field. This study explores the role of planetary waves on inducing these vertical shears and subsequently shaping Es layers. Our investigations benefit from a large amount of data facilitated by the FORMOSAT‐7/COSMIC2 and Spire missions, which offer extensive global coverage. A wave analysis is applied to the Es intensity as represented by the S4 index derived from radio occultation measurements, in search of potential planetary wave signatures. Additionally, measurements from Aura/MLS are used to analyze corresponding spectra for the geopotential height, enabling a comparative examination of planetary wave signatures in the Es layer and geopotential height variations. The findings reveal westward and eastward wave components with specific wavenumbers and periods, suggesting the involvement of westward propagating quasi 6‐day, quasi 4‐day planetary waves, and eastward propagating Kelvin waves with a period of around 3 days in Es layer formation at low latitudes.

Ionospheric interhemispheric asymmetry induced by planetary wave under solar minimum condition

Abstract:The westward quasi-6-day planetary wave with zonal wave number 1 (Q6DW) is important in the Earth's atmospheric coupling. The International Global Navigation Satellite System Service total electron content (TEC) maps show that the Q6DW-related ionospheric perturbations exhibit clear interhemispheric asymmetry, which do not always agree with the interhemispheric asymmetry feature of the background TEC. The National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Electrodynamic General Circulation Model is then used to investigate the reasons for planetary wave-induced interhemispheric asymmetry by imposing Q6DW forcing at the model lower boundary at vernal equinox under solar minimum condition. The interhemispheric asymmetry features of the ionospheric responses to Q6DW are well captured by our model simulations. For example, the southern branch of the Q6DW perturbation in F region is similar to 26% larger than that in the Northern Hemisphere at 30 degrees E, while the background Model TEC is similar to 4.7% stronger in the Northern Hemisphere. We found that the vertical plasma transportation induced by Q6DW perturbations in the neutral wind fields in F region show the same asymmetric features with TEC, which leads to corresponding ionospheric perturbations by changing the local recombination effect. Our further simulations show that the vertical plasma drifts induced by Q6DW through E x B process can also cause interhemispheric asymmetry in Model TEC. It is also found that the zonal component of Q6DW perturbations contributes more to the asymmetry than the meridional component through both neutral wind direct transportation effects and E region wind dynamo effects. Moreover, the ionospheric asymmetry of the Q6DW-related oscillations also exhibit clear longitudinal variabilities.
Quasi 10-Day Wave Modulation of Equatorial Ionization Anomaly During the Southern Hemisphere Stratospheric Warming of 2002

Abstract:The present paper studies the perturbations in an equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) region during the Southern Hemisphere (SH) sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) of 2002, using the location of EIA crests derived from global positioning system (GPS) station observations, the total electron content (TEC) obtained by the International GNSS (global navigation satellite system) Service (IGS) global ionospheric TEC map (GIMs) and the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) estimated by the geomagnetic field in the Asian sector. The results indicate the existence of an obvious quasi-10 d periodic oscillation in the location and TEC of the northern and southern EIA crest. An eastward phase progression of the quasi-10 d wave producing the SH SSW of 2002 is also identified in polar stratospheric temperature. Previous studies have shown that a strong quasi-10 d planetary wave with zonal wave numbers s = 1 extended from the lower stratosphere to the mesosphere and lower thermosphere during the SH SSW of 2002 (Palo et al., 2005). Moreover, the EEJ driven by the equatorial zonal electric field exhibits quasi-10 d oscillation, suggesting the enhanced quasi-10 d planetary wave associated with SSW penetrates into the ionosphere E region and produces oscillation in the EIA region through modulating the E-region electric fields. Our results reveal some newer features of ionospheric variation that have not been reported during Northern Hemisphere (NH) SSWs.
The Field of Shock‐Generated Alfven Oscillations Near the Plasmapause

Abstract:A theoretical interpretation is given for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations observed by the GOES and Cluster satellites on November 7, 2004 near the plasmapause (Zong et al., 2009, 2012, https://doi.org/10.1029/2009ja014393, https://doi.org/10.1029/2012ja018024), before and after an interplanetary shock passes through the magnetosphere (about 18:27 UT). It is shown that, after the shock front passage, the MHD oscillation spectra recorded by Cluster (C1) and GOES 12, located respectively inside and outside the plasmasphere, differ significantly. According to our interpretation, these differences are due to the shock wavefront affecting the plasmapause and exciting broadband resonant Alfven waves, thus significantly changing the MHD oscillation spectrum. A model in the form of a plasma cylinder was developed in order to study MHD oscillations in the dayside magnetosphere numerically. An analytical model is proposed for the source of resonant Alfven waves that has the form of two fast magnetosonic wave packets propagating along the plasmapause, resulting from the shock wave/plasmapause interaction. Numerically calculated parameters of Alfven waves excited by a source based on this model show a good agreement with the oscillation parameters observed by satellites.

Abstract:We present a simulation of Jupiter's quasi-quadrennial oscillation (QQO) in a 2D radiative-dynamical model. Launching an eastward Kelvin wave and a westward Rossby-gravity wave in the lower boundary, we successfully generate a 4 yr-period oscillation in the equatorial stratosphere. The momentum flux of waves initiates overlying easterly–westerly wind jets descending in altitude with the maximum temperature variation of ±5 K near 10 hPa at the equator. The tropical stratospheric region is dominated by upwelling and downwelling circulation cells induced by the QQO, affecting the midlatitude where stratospheric aerosols enrich. The simulation results are consistent with the previous satellite and ground-based observations in the low latitudes and provide the ability to examine the QQO's influence in Jupiter's extratropical stratosphere. The QQO influence further extends into the upper troposphere, forming a weak anticorrelation with the stratosphere oscillation in agreement with the result from 40 yr of telescope observations.

The Structure of Planetary Period Oscillations in Saturn's Equatorial Magnetosphere: Results from the Cassini Mission

Abstract:Saturn's magnetospheric magnetic field, planetary radio emissions, plasma populations and magnetospheric structure are all known to be modulated at periods close to the assumed rotation period of the planetary interior. These oscillations are readily apparent despite the high degree of axi-symmetry in the internally produced magnetic field of the planet, and have different rotation periods in the northern and southern hemispheres. In this paper we study the spatial structure of (near-) planetary period magnetic field oscillations in Saturn's equatorial magnetosphere. Extending previous analyses of these phenomena, we include all suitable data from the entire Cassini mission during its orbital tour of the planet, so as to be able to quantify both the amplitude and phase of these field oscillations throughout Saturn's equatorial plane, to distances of 30 planetary radii. We study the structure of these field oscillations in view of both independently rotating northern and southern systems, finding spatial variations in both magnetic fields and inferred currents flowing north-south that are common to both systems. With the greatly expanded coverage of the equatorial plane achieved during the latter years of the mission, we are able to present a complete survey of dawn-dusk and day-night asymmetries in the structure of the oscillating fields and currents. We show that the general structure of the rotating currents is simpler than previously reported, and that the relatively enhanced nightside equatorial fields and currents are due in part to related periodic vertical motion of Saturn's magnetotail current sheet.

Abstract:Equatorial plasma irregularities in the ionospheric F‐region proliferate after sunset, causing the most apparent radio scintillation "hot‐spot" in geospace. These irregularities are caused by plasma instabilities, and appear mostly in the form of under‐densities that rise up from the F‐region's bottomside. After an irregularity production peak at sunset, the amplitude of the resulting turbulence decays with time. Analyzing a large database of irregularity spectra observed by one of the European Space Agency's Swarm satellites, we have applied a novel but conceptually simple statistical analysis to the data, finding that turbulence in the F‐region tends to decay with a uniform, scale‐independent rate, thereby confirming and extending the results from an earlier case study. We find evidence for two regimes, one valid post‐sunset (1.4 hr decay rate) and one valid post‐midnight (2.6 hr). Our results should be of utility for large‐scale space weather modeling efforts that are unable to resolve turbulent effects.

Thermospheric Density Oscillations Due to Periodic Solar Wind Highspeed Streams

Abstract:We report on periodic oscillations in thermosphere density, measured by the accelerometer on the CHAMP satellite during 2006, and relate these periodicities to oscillations observed in solar wind speed and Kp index. Common periodic oscillations at 4–5, 6–7, and 9–11 day periods are observed in the neutral density at 400 km in the 2006 data set, with the 7 day period being the predominant oscillation. Spectral analysis reveals that similar periodicities are present in both the solar wind and the planetary magnetic index Kp but not in the EUV solar flux proxy F10.7. We suggest that the periodic oscillations observed in thermosphere density are a direct response to recurrent geomagnetic activity and associated high‐speed streams in the solar wind. The lack of response in F10.7 at the 7 day period enables storm effects on the thermosphere density to be isolated from solar flux effects. The Kp index for these events correspond to moderate levels of geomagnetic activity, and the resultant perturbations in thermosphere density are ±20–30% of background levels. Although these levels of perturbation are small compared to major magnetic storms, their much higher occurrence frequency and characteristic long recovery time may lead to a cumulative effect on the state of the thermosphere and ionosphere.
