Abstract:This study investigates the responses of the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere in the American–Atlantic longitude sector during the super geomagnetic storm that occurred on 10–11 May 2024. The investigation utilizes multi-instrument datasets, including ground-based observations (GNSS TEC, ionosonde, and Fabry–Perot interferometer) as well as space-borne satellite measurements (GOLD, Swarm, DMSP, and TIMED). Our findings reveal significant day-to-day variations in the storm-time equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), summarized as follows: (1) During the main phase of the storm, the low- and mid-latitude ionosphere experienced a positive storm, with TEC drastically enhanced by 50–100% within a few hours. The EIA crests exhibited a substantial poleward expansion, reaching as high as ±35° MLAT. This expansion was caused by the enhanced fountain effect driven by penetration electric fields, along with increased ambipolar diffusion due to transient meridional wind surges. (2) During the recovery phase of the storm, the global ionosphere was characterized by a substantial negative storm with a 50–80% depletion in TEC. The EIA crests were notably suppressed and merged into a single equatorial band, which can be attributed to the composition change effect and the influence of disturbance dynamo electric fields. These results illustrate the complex processes of magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling during a superstorm, highlighting the significant impacts of space weather on the global ionosphere.

Abstract:The GPS observation data measured at GXUN (22.84 degrees N, 108.33 degrees E, MLAT similar to 12.14 degrees N) and BAKO (6.49 degrees S, 106.84 degrees E, MLAT similar to 17.18 degrees S) stations from 2006 to 2015 are utilized to make a comparative study of the northern and southern equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crests in the East-Asian sector. The intensity of northern EIA crest is similar to that of southern EIA crest during the solar minimum years, while during the solar maximum years, the intensity of northern EIA crest is a little stronger than that of southern EIA crest except in summer season of northern hemisphere. The geomagnetic latitude (MLAT) of northern EIA crest shows a weak semiannual variation with the highest in equinoctial months and the lowest in solistical months, but the MLAT of southern EIA crest shows a clear annual variation with the highest in summer season of southern hemisphere and the lowest in winter season of southern hemisphere, which is particularly obvious during the solar minimum years. The intensities of northern and southern EIA crests have good correlation, which is independent of the solar activity, but the correlation coefficients of MLAT between northern and southern EIA crests increase with the solar activity. A comprehensive analysis of the previous studies and our results indicate that the intensity, MLAT, and interhemispheric asymmetry of EIA crest are mainly dominated by photochemical process, equatorial fountain effect, and neutral wind, respectively. DYNAMIC EVOLUTION OF AN X-SHAPED STRUCTURE ABOVE A TRANS-EQUATORIAL QUADRUPOLE SOLAR ACTIVE REGION GROUP

Abstract:In the solar corona, magnetic reconnection usually takes place at the singular configuration of magnetic field, in particular near a magnetic null owing to its high susceptibility to perturbations. In this Letter, we report a rare X-shaped structure, encompassing a magnetic null, above a trans-equatorial quadrupole active region group that is well observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). The observations show that this X-shaped structure is visible in all AIA EUV passbands and stably exists for days. However, possibly induced by flare activities at the northern part of the quadrupole active region group, the X-shaped structure starts to destabilize and meanwhile a jet erupted near its center at 15:05 UT on 2013 October 7. Through the non-linear force-free field modeling, we identify a magnetic null, which is above the quadrupole polarities and well corresponds to the X-shaped structure. After the jet eruption, the temperature and emission measure of the plasma near the X-shaped structure rise from 2.3 MK and 1.2x10^27 cm-5 at 15:01 UT to 5.4 MK and 3.7x10^27 cm-5 at 15:36 UT, respectively, revealed by the differential emission measure analysis, indicating that magnetic reconnection most likely takes place there to heat the plasma. Moreover, the height of the null has an increase of 10 Mm, which is most likely due to the partial opening of the field lines near the fan surface that makes the null underneath rise to seek for a new equilibrium.

Abstract:The modulation of geomagnetic activity on the equatorial thermosphere anomaly (ETA) in thermospheric temperature under the high solar activity condition is investigated using the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model simulations. The model simulations during the geomagnetically disturbed interval, when the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bz) oscillates between southward and northward directions, are analyzed and also compared with those under the quiet time condition. Our results show that ionospheric electron densities increase greatly in the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest region and decrease around the magnetic equator during the storm time, resulting from the enhanced eastward electric fields. The impact of both the direct heat deposition at high latitudes and the modulation of the storm time enhanced EIA crests on the ETA are subsequently studied. The increased plasma densities over the EIA crest region enhance the field-aligned ion drag that accelerates the poleward meridional winds and consequently their associated adiabatic cooling effect. This process alone produces a deeper temperature trough over the magnetic equator as a result of the enhanced divergence of meridional winds. Moreover, the enhanced plasma-neutral collisional heating at higher latitudes associated with the ionospheric positive storm effect causes a weak increase of the ETA crests. On the other hand, strong changes of the neutral temperature are mainly confined to higher latitudes. Nevertheless, the changes of the ETA purely due to the increased plasma density are overwhelmed by those associated with the storm time heat deposition, which is the major cause of an overall elevated temperature in both the ETA crests and trough during the geomagnetically active period. Associated with the enhanced neutral temperature at high latitudes due to the heat deposition, the ETA crest-trough differences become larger under the minor geomagnetic activity condition than under the quiet time condition. However, when geomagnetic activity is further elevated, the ETA crests tend to be masked by high temperatures at middle and high latitudes.

Abstract:Using the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and the location of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest derived from GPS data observed at Nanning (22.84 degrees N, 108.33 degrees E, dip latitude similar to 12.14 degrees N), China, a GPS station situated near the daytime EIA crest region, the local time, seasonal, and solar cycle variations of EIA crests from 2006 to 2015 was investigated. The TEC and the magnetic latitude (MLAT) location of EIA crest experience an ascendant and descendant process with the daytime evolution of EIA crest. Also, this diurnal variation of EIA crest depends on season and solar cycle. The TEC and MLAT location of EIA crest is stronger and higher in equinoctial months than that in solistial months showing a semiannual variation. The TEC and MLAT location of EIA crest increase with the solar activity. The local time, seasonal, and solar cycle variations of EIA crest is consistent with that of the strength of equatorial electrojet (EEJ). Comparatively, the correlation of the EEJ strength with the EIA location is better than that with the TEC of EIA crest. Plain Language Summary The equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) is the special structure in Earth ionosphere; the variation of this structure is important for ionospheric space weather. Using the daytime EIA crest derived from GPS data observed at Nanning (22.84 degrees N, 108.33 degrees E) from 2006 to 2015, China, the local time, seasonal, and solar activity variations of EIA crests were investigated. Electrodynamical Coupling of the Geospace System During Solar Flares

Abstract:Reduced daytime upward E×B drifts and weakened fountain effects in equatorial ionosphere have been frequently observed during the initial stage of solar flares. The cause of this phenomenon, however, remains unresolved. The latest state‐of‐art whole geospace model provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore the origin of this response. We show that both prompt penetration electric fields (PPEFs) and internal changes in the wind dynamo process are responsible for the reduced upward ion drifts. Solar‐flare‐induced PPEFs are caused by a reduced high‐latitude potential as a result of flare‐enhanced ionospheric conductances which are distinct from traditional PPEFs that respond to changes in solar wind conditions or magnetosphere dynamics. The neutral wind dynamo source is mainly a reduction in the background low‐latitude eastward electric field. This reduction occurs to maintain current continuity in response to the flare enhancement of low‐latitude Cowling conductance that is relatively greater than the enhancement of the dynamo current source.
Intensification of the Electron Zebra Stripes in the Earth's Inner Magnetosphere During Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:We examined rapid variations in the electron zebra stripe patterns, specifically at L = 1.5, over a three‐month duration, using twin Van Allen Probes within Earth's inner magnetosphere. During geomagnetically quiet intervals, these stripes exhibit a peak‐to‐valley ratio (Δj) ∼1.25 in detrended electron fluxes. However, during geomagnetic storms, they became highly prominent, with Δj > 2.5. The correlation between Δj and net field‐aligned currents (FACs) is observed to be high (0.70). Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation results indicate that the westward electric field at midnight at low latitudes in the deep inner magnetosphere correlates well with net FACs. An increase in net FACs could amplify the dawn‐to‐dusk electric field in the deep inner magnetosphere, thereby causing the inward transport of electrons. Given that FACs are linked to the interaction between solar wind and the magnetosphere, our findings emphasize the importance of solar wind‐magnetosphere coupling in the deeper regions of the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:The daily evolution of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) and the Equatorial Electrojet (EEJ) exhibits phase difference, which reflects the response time of the F-region equatorial plasma fountain to the E-region electric field variation. Studies on this response time contribute to clarifying the relative importance of different influence factors on the low-latitude E- and F-region coupling process. However, the solar-cycle, seasonal and longitudinal dependence of this response time has not yet been comprehensively revealed. In this paper, the occurrence time of the daytime most developed northern EIA crest (T-EIA), the occurrence time of the daytime strongest EEJ (T-EEJ), and their time delay (delta T = T-EIA-T-EEJ) during 2008 to 2018 are derived from total electron content and magnetometer data, and the seasonal and solar-cycle variations of these parameters are analyzed and compared between the eastern Asian and American sectors. Main results are as follows. (1) T-EIA and delta T share similar seasonal and solar-cycle variation patterns, which are different from T-EEJ. (2) The prevailing seasonal variation pattern of T-EIA is generally consistent in the two sectors, which is earlier (later) in the boreal winter (summer). This feature is not determined by the variations of T-EEJ or EEJ strength. (3) The solar-cycle variation pattern of T-EIA is different between the eastern Asian and American sectors, but the 11-yr averaged T-EIA is nearly the same in the two sectors. The solarcycle and longitudinal dependencies are probably due to the combined effect of electric field, meridional wind, and local geomagnetic field configuration. (c) 2021 COSPAR.
