Abstract:A global reconfiguration of the magnetotail characterizes substorms. Current sheet thinning, intensification, and magnetic field stretching are defining features of the substorm growth phase and their spatial distributions control the timing and location of substorm onset. Presently, sparse in‐situ observations cannot resolve these distributions. A promising approach is to use new substorm magnetic field reconstruction methods based on data mining, termed SST19. Here we compare the SST19 reconstructions to low‐altitude electron losses and fields investigation (ELFIN) measurements of energetic particle precipitations to probe the radial profile of the equatorial magnetic field curvature during a 19 August 2022 substorm. ELFIN and SST19 yield a consistent dynamical picture of the magnetotail during the growth phase and capture its key features such as the formation of a thin current sheet and its earthward motion. Furthermore, they resolve a "checkmark" pattern of isotropic electron precipitation boundaries in the time‐energy plane, consistent with earlier observations but now over a broad energy range. It is shown that in the growth phase, the mismatch between SST19 and ELFIN latitudes is much less than one degree, the capability unattainable for any other empirical or first‐principles model.

Abstract:Within the fully integrated magnetosphere-ionosphere system, many electrodynamic processes interact with each other. We review recent advances in understanding three major meso-scale coupling processes within the system: the transient field-aligned currents (FACs), mid-latitude plasma convection, and auroral particle precipitation. (1) Transient FACs arise due to disturbances from either dayside or nightside magnetosphere. As the interplanetary shocks suddenly compress the dayside magnetosphere, short-lived FACs are induced at high latitudes with their polarity successively changing. Magnetotail dynamics, such as substorm injections, can also disturb the current structures, leading to the formation of substorm current wedges and ring current disruption. (2) The mid-latitude plasma convection is closely associated with electric fields in the system. Recent studies have unraveled some important features and mechanisms of subauroral fast flows. (3) Charged particles, while drifting around the Earth, often experience precipitating loss down to the upper atmosphere, enhancing the auroral conductivity. Recent studies have been devoted to developing more self-consistent geospace circulation models by including a better representation of the auroral conductance. It is expected that including these new advances in geospace circulation models could promisingly strengthen their forecasting capability in space weather applications. The remaining challenges especially in the global modeling of the circulation system are also discussed.

Abstract:We analyze a magnetotail reconnection onset event on 3 July 2017 that was observed under otherwise quiescent magnetospheric conditions by a fortuitous conjunction of six space and ground-based observatories. The study investigates the large-scale coupling of the solar wind-magnetosphere system that precipitated the onset of the magnetotail reconnection, focusing on the processes that thinned and stretched the cross-tail current layer in the absence of significant flux loading during a 2-hr-long preconditioning phase. It is demonstrated with data in the (a) upstream solar wind, (b) at the low-latitude magnetopause, (c) in the high-latitude polar cap, and (d) in the magnetotail that the typical picture of solar wind-driven current sheet thinning via flux loading does not appear relevant for this particular event. We find that the current sheet thinning was, instead, initiated by a transient solar wind pressure pulse and that the current sheet thinning continued even as the magnetotail and solar wind pressures decreased. We suggest that field line curvature-induced scattering (observed by magnetospheric multiscale) and precipitation (observed by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) of high-energy thermal protons may have evacuated plasma sheet thermal energy, which may require a thinning of the plasma sheet to preserve pressure equilibrium with the solar wind.

Abstract:A two‐dimensional, low‐dissipation magnetohydrodynamic simulation is used as a model for magnetospheric substorm dynamics. The simulation begins from a Grad‐Shafranov equilibrium of the magnetotail including the Earth's dipole field. This initial configuration is driven by a continuous electric field (of IMF origin) which induces equatorward flows. A thin current sheet develops algebraically in time, spanning Y‐points that stretch from the mid‐tail region (∼30 RE) to the near‐Earth region (∼10 RE). In the late growth phase, rapid thinning of the sheet and near‐explosive intensification of the current density are observed. The onset of a partial current disruption results from the formation of small islands in the near‐Earth region. Numerical results are compared with observations.

Global Three‐Dimensional Simulation of Earth's Dayside Reconnection Using a Two‐Way Coupled Magnetohydrodynamics With Embedded Particle‐in‐Cell Model: Initial Results

Abstract:Abstract We perform a three‐dimensional (3‐D) global simulation of Earth's magnetosphere with kinetic reconnection physics to study the flux transfer events (FTEs) and dayside magnetic reconnection with the recently developed magnetohydrodynamics with embedded particle‐in‐cell model. During the 1 h long simulation, the FTEs are generated quasi‐periodically near the subsolar point and move toward the poles. We find that the magnetic field signature of FTEs at their early formation stage is similar to a “crater FTE,” which is characterized by a magnetic field strength dip at the FTE center. After the FTE core field grows to a significant value, it becomes an FTE with typical flux rope structure. When an FTE moves across the cusp, reconnection between the FTE field lines and the cusp field lines can dissipate the FTE. The kinetic features are also captured by our model. A crescent electron phase space distribution is found near the reconnection site. A similar distribution is found for ions at the location where the Larmor electric field appears. The lower hybrid drift instability (LHDI) along the current sheet direction also arises at the interface of magnetosheath and magnetosphere plasma. The LHDI electric field is about 8 mV/m, and its dominant wavelength relative to the electron gyroradius agrees reasonably with Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations.Key Points We performed a 1 h long global simulation of Earth's magnetosphere with kinetic modeling of the dayside reconnection Crater FTE is found at the early stage of a flux rope formation Kinetic phenomena are found from the global simulation

Abstract:Recent multi-point measurements, in particular from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft, have advanced the understanding of micro-scale aspects of magnetic reconnection. In addition, the MMS mission, as part of the Heliospheric System Observatory, combined with recent advances in global magnetospheric modeling, have furthered the understanding of meso- and global-scale structure and consequences of reconnection. Magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause and in the magnetotail are the drivers of the global Dungey cycle, a classical picture of global magnetospheric circulation. Some recent advances in the global structure and consequences of reconnection that are addressed here include a detailed understanding of the location and steadiness of reconnection at the dayside magnetopause, the importance of multiple plasma sources in the global circulation, and reconnection consequences in the magnetotail. These advances notwithstanding, there are important questions about global reconnection that remain. These questions focus on how multiple reconnection and reconnection variability fit into and complicate the Dungey Cycle picture of global magnetospheric circulation.

Magnetic Mapping Effects of Substorm Currents Leading to Auroral Poleward Expansion and Equatorward Retreat

Abstract:Magnetotail fast flows, magnetic field dipolarization, and its relaxation are linked to auroral brightening, poleward expansion, and equatorward motion during substorm onset, expansion, and recovery, respectively. While auroral brightening is often attributed to the field-aligned currents produced by flow vorticity and pressure redistribution, the physical causes of auroral poleward expansion and equatorward retreat are not fully understood. Simplistically, such latitudinal changes can be directly associated to the tailward motion of the flux pileup region and the earthward flux transport toward the dayside that depletes the near-Earth plasma sheet. However, because the equatorial magnetic field profile and the magnetospheric field-aligned current system change significantly, mapping is severely distorted. To investigate this distortion, we superimpose a substorm current wedge model (dynamically driven by ground-based observations) on the global Tsyganenko model T96 during an isolated substorm on 13 February 2008, observed by the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms and GOES 10 spacecraft and by ground all-sky imagers. We validate our model by showing that the timing and ionospheric projection of the flux pileup region and flow bursts observed at the spacecraft match auroral activations. We then use the improved mapping enabled by the model to demonstrate that in this event, auroral poleward expansion and equatorward retreat are mainly caused by substorm-current-wedge-induced mapping changes.

Abstract:Magnetospheric substorms explosively release solar wind energy previously stored in Earth's magnetotail, encompassing the entire magnetosphere and producing spectacular auroral displays. It has been unclear whether a substorm is triggered by a disruption of the electrical current flowing across the near-Earth magnetotail, at approximately 10 R(E) (R(E): Earth radius, or 6374 kilometers), or by the process of magnetic reconnection typically seen farther out in the magnetotail, at approximately 20 to 30 R(E). We report on simultaneous measurements in the magnetotail at multiple distances, at the time of substorm onset. Reconnection was observed at 20 R(E), at least 1.5 minutes before auroral intensification, at least 2 minutes before substorm expansion, and about 3 minutes before near-Earth current disruption. These results demonstrate that substorms are likely initiated by tail reconnection.

Abstract:This letter uses simultaneous observations from Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) and Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) to address the dynamics of the magnetopause and magnetosheath boundary layers during the main phase of a storm during which the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) reverses from south to north. Near the dawn terminator, MMS observes two boundary layers comprising open and closed field lines and containing energetic electrons and ring current oxygen. Some closed field line regions exhibit sunward convection, presenting an avenue to replenish dayside magnetic flux lost during the storm. Meanwhile, THEMIS observes two boundary layers in the pre‐noon sector which strongly resemble those observed at the flank by MMS. Observations from the three THEMIS spacecraft indicate the boundary layers are still evolving several hours after the IMF has turned northward. These observations advance our knowledge of the dynamic magnetopause and magnetosheath boundary layers under the combined effects of an ongoing storm and changing IMF.

Substorm-Like Magnetospheric Response to A Discontinuity in the B-X Component of Interplanetary Magnetic Field

Abstract:We examined the magnetospheric magnetic field and plasma responses to an encounter of a discontinuity in the Bx component of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The striking variations of simultaneous solar wind dynamic pressure and IMF‐Bz were not observed. Furthermore, we found that this IMF‐Bx discontinuity was a heliospheric current sheet, separating two high‐speed solar wind streams with different velocity and magnetic polarity. In this study, the magnetic field and plasma data were obtained from Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS), Cluster, and GOES to investigate the magnetospheric responses, and those were taken from ACE and Geotail to monitor the solar wind conditions. Simultaneous geomagnetic field variations from the ground observatories and aurora activity from Polar were also examined. When the discontinuity encountered the magnetosphere, THEMIS‐D, ‐E, and THEMIS‐A observed abrupt and transient magnetic field and plasma variations in the dawnside near‐Earth magnetotail and tail‐flank magnetopause. Significant magnetic field perturbations were not observed by Cluster as located in the duskside magnetotail at this time interval. Although simultaneous dipolarization and negative bay variations with Pi2 waves were observed by GOES and the ground observatories, global auroral activities were not found. Around the dawnside tail‐flank magnetopause, THEMIS‐C and ‐A experienced the magnetopause crossings due to the magnetopause surface waves induced by Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability. These results suggest that the magnetic field and plasma variations in the near‐Earth magnetotail and tail‐flank magnetopause were caused by moderate substorm‐like phenomena and magnetopause surface waves. They also indicate that clear magnetospheric disturbances can be brought even without significant variations in the solar wind.

On the Current Sheets Surrounding Dipolarizing Flux Bundles in the Magnetotail: the Case for Wedgelets

Abstract:Using Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms observations from four tail seasons, we study the three‐dimensional structure of the dipolarization front current sheet (DFCS), which demarcates the magnetic boundary of a dipolarizing flux bundle (DFB, the strong magnetic field region led by a dipolarization front) in Earth's magnetotail. An equatorial cross section of the DFCS is convex; a meridional cross section is consistent with a dipolarized field line. The equatorial flow pattern in the ambient plasma ahead of the DFCS exhibits diversions of opposite sense on its evening and morning sides. The magnetic field perturbations are consistent with local field‐aligned current generation of region‐2 sense ahead of the front and region‐1 sense at the front. The median thickness of the DFCS increases from 800 to 2000 km with increasing distance from the neutral sheet, indicating bundle compression near the neutral sheet. On a meridional cross section, DFCS's linear current density (1.2–1.8 nA/m) peaks ~±0.55 l from the neutral sheet (where l is the ambient cross‐tail current sheet half‐thickness, l ~1.5 RE in our database). This peak, reminiscent of active‐time cross‐tail current sheet bifurcation noted in past studies, suggests that the intense but thin DFCS (10 to 20 nA/m2) may be produced by redistribution (diversion) of the extended but weaker cross‐tail current (~1 nA/m2). Near the neutral sheet, the average DFCS current over the dipolarization front (DF) thickness is perpendicular to both the magnetic field interior to the DFB and the average field direction over the DF thickness. Away from the neutral sheet, the average current becomes progressively parallel to the internal field and the average field direction. The average current directions are indicative of region‐1‐sense field‐aligned current on the DF. As few as approximately three DFBs can carry sufficient total current that, if redirected into the auroral ionosphere, can account for the substorm current wedge's peak current for a sizable substorm (~1 MA). A collapsing DFB could thus be an elemental substorm current wedge, or “wedgelet,” that can divert a sizable portion of the cross‐tail current into the auroral ionosphere.

Abstract:During magnetospheric substorms and plasma transport in the Earth's magnetotail various magnetic structures can be detected. Dipolarization fronts and flux ropes are the most prominent structures characteristic for substorm dynamics. However, they are treated as separate magnetotail features independent of each other. In this paper, we analyze a number of dipolarization fronts observed by the THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) spacecraft at different geocentric distances by applying the magnetohydrostatic Grad–Shafranov (GS) reconstruction technique. Our analysis shows that there is a possibility of dipolarization fronts to originate from highly dissipated flux ropes which are in the late stage of their evolution, subjected to a continuous magnetic deterioration due to the reconnection process. These results may improve our understanding of magnetoplasma processes in Earth's magnetotail.

Abstract:Fifty‐three substorms measured by Double Star/TC‐1 in the near‐Earth magnetotail from July to October, 2004 are studied. The main features of these events are: (a) Magnetic flux pileup characterized by continuous enhancement of Bz is observed, which starts almost simultaneously with aurora breakup within 1–3 minutes, indicating that substorm onset is in close relation to flux pileup. (b) Sudden plasma sheet expansion with sharp increases in ion temperature and density is seen in all events, which occurs typically ∼11 minutes after the beginning of pileup. The plasma sheet expansion is shown to be in close relation with the primary substorm dipolarization and, hence, can be referred to as ‘dipolarization‐associated expansion’. (c) Evidence indicates that the substorm current wedge first forms earthward of TC‐1 position and, hence, inward of the flow braking region, and then propagates tailward with an expansion in the Z‐direction. Possible implications of these observations are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Based on high-resolution measurements from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we present the dynamics of electrons associated with current systems observed near the diffusion region of magnetic reconnection at Earth's magnetopause. Using pitch angle distributions (PAD) and magnetic curvature analysis, we demonstrate the occurrence of electron scattering in the curved magnetic field of the diffusion region down to energies of 20 eV. We show that scattering occurs closer to the current sheet as the electron energy decreases. The scattering of inflowing electrons, associated with field-aligned electrostatic potentials and Hall currents, produces a new population of scattered electrons with broader PAD which bounce back and forth in the exhaust. Except at the center of the diffusion region the two populations are collocated and appear to behave adiabatically: the inflowing electron PAD focuses inward (toward lower magnetic field), while the bouncing population PAD gradually peaks at 90 degrees away from the center (where it mirrors owing to higher magnetic field and probable field-aligned potentials).

Abstract:We examine several dipolarizations and a reversal of plasma flow detected by Cluster at the downstream distance of ∼19 R E in the midnight sector of the magnetotail on August 22, 2001. These substorm features occurred during a sequence of substorm activity seen by the IMAGE/FUV imager. Findings consistent with previous reports are the following: (1) there is generally a decrease of the z-component of the magnetic field (B z ) prior to dipolarization; (2) the onset of dipolarization can precede the onset of significant plasma flow; (3) dipolarization is quite episodic in nature, consisting of multiple increases and decreases of the B z component. New features revealed in this study are the following: (1) the turbulent region associated with dipolarization can exhibit dynamo effect as well as dissipation, (2) the x-component of the Lorentz force (jxB) x does not change sign at plasma flow reversal although the other two components do (indicative of changes in the magnetic stress consistent with shifting dominance of multiple activity sites rather than a tailward movement of a single activity site as commonly assumed), and (3) the frozen-in condition breaks down during dipolarization in several regions where the B z component and the total magnetic field strength have large values, different from the expectation of the diffusion region associated with magnetic reconnection.
