Abstract:Past studies of plasma sheaths enveloping vehicles have shown that the distribution of plasma is time-varying and results in communication and navigation problems. This paper aims to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the plasma sheath through the simulations of the Radio Attenuation Measurements-C II vehicle and the Apollo command module flowfields. The numerical methodology is based on the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model and the detached-eddy simulation model, and the thermochemical nonequilibrium effect is considered. The stable flows of both vehicles with a steady plasma sheath widely distributed in the shock-wave layer are first obtained. For the Radio Attenuation Measurements-C II vehicle, the dynamic plasma arising from the vehicle pitching oscillation has the same frequency as the vehicle oscillation, and the magnitude of the disturbance to plasma is related to the oscillation velocity. For the Apollo command module, the oscillation period of the electron density is the same as the evolution period of the vortex structures in the leeward regions. The time-varying surface electron density and pressure reveal a similar variation trend with the phase difference. In addition, the periodicity of the dynamic plasma disappears as the flow instability intensifies in the Apollo command module flowfields, whereas periodic plasma exists for a long time in the Radio Attenuation Measurements-C II vehicle oscillation flowfields.

Abstract:Releasing plasma cloud is an efficient way to manage ionosphere properties. In this paper, we establish a three-dimensional fluid model to simulate the spatiotemporal evolution of released Cs plasma. Four types of particles are taken into account: released neutral Cs, ambient O, Cs+ and electron, among which the Cs+ and electron move according to the classical ambipolar diffusion. Meanwhile, photoionization induced by solar radiation and recombination of Cs+/electron are included in model as two chemical reactions. Based on this model, we investigate the influence of three factors: initial velocity of neutral Cs cloud, photoionization rate and altitude. The initial velocity can change the whole distribution of plasma cloud. When there is no velocity or velocity along the background magnetic field, the plasma cloud shows an ellipsoid shape and moves with neutral cloud. If the velocity is perpendicular to the magnetic field line, the cloud will be stretched in the same direction and does not move. We investigate the influence of photoionization rate under different initial velocities, and find that with the photoionization rate increasing, more and more particles remain in the initial release position. Moreover, the altitude affects the density of ambient O and temperature result in the diffusion coefficient and drifting velocity reducing and then the size of bulk plasma inclines to be reduced at lower altitude.

High-Resolution Three-Dimensional MHD Simulations of Plasmoid Formation in Solar Flares

Abstract:<p>In highly conducting plasmas, reconnecting current sheets are often unstable to the generation of plasmoids, small-scale magnetic structures that play an important role in facilitating the rapid release of magnetic energy and channeling that energy into accelerated particles. There is ample evidence for plasmoids throughout the heliosphere, from in situ observations of flux ropes in the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres to remote-sensing imaging of plasma &#8216;blobs&#8217; associated with explosive solar activity such as eruptive flares and coronal jets. Accurate models for plasmoid formation and dynamics must capture the large-scale self-organization responsible for forming the reconnecting current sheet. However, due to the computational difficulty inherent in the vast separation between the global and current sheet scales, previous numerical studies have typically explored configurations with either reduced dimensionality or pre-formed current sheets. We present new three-dimensional MHD studies of an eruptive flare in which the formation of the current sheet and subsequent reconnection and plasmoid formation are captured within a single simulation. We employ Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) to selectively resolve fine-scale current sheet dynamics. Reconnection in the flare current sheet generates many plasmoids that exhibit highly complex, three-dimensional structure. We show how plasmoid formation and dynamics evolve through the course of the flare, especially in response to the weakening of the reconnection &#8220;guide field&#8221; linked to the global reduction of magnetic shear. We discuss implications of our results for particle acceleration and transport in eruptive flares as well as for observations by Parker Solar Probe and the forthcoming Solar Orbiter.</p>

Abstract:This paper reports the development of global FDTD models incorporated with a quasi-real anisotropic ionosphere consisting of magnetized cold plasmas. Compared to the existing global models utilizing simple conductivity ionospheric profiles, the algorithms reported in this paper can sufficiently extend the global-scale electromagnetic simulations to much higher altitudes as the physics introduced by the spatially-varied ionospheric plasmas and the geomagnetic field can be fully included in calculations.

Abstract:We develop a general description of how information propagates through a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system based on the method of characteristics and use that to formulate numerical boundary conditions that are intrinsically consistent with the MHD equations. Our formulation includes two major advances for simulations of the Sun. First, we derive data-driven boundary conditions that optimally match the state of the plasma inferred from a time series of observations of a boundary (e.g., the solar photosphere). Second, our method directly handles random noise and systematic bias in the observations, and finds a solution for the boundary evolution that is strictly consistent with MHD and maximally consistent with the observations. We validate the method against a Ground Truth (GT) simulation of an expanding spheromak. The data-driven simulation can reproduce the GT simulation above the photosphere with high fidelity when driven at high cadence. Errors progressively increase for lower driving cadence until a threshold cadence is reached and the driven simulation can no longer accurately reproduce the GT simulation. However, our characteristic formulation of the boundary conditions still requires adherence of the boundary evolution to the MHD equations even when the driven solution departs from the true solution in the driving layer. That increasing departure clearly indicates when additional information at the boundary is needed to fully specify the correct evolution of the system. The method functions even when no information about the evolution of some variables on the lower boundary is available, albeit with a further decrease in fidelity.

Three-dimensional numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and vortices in the solar atmosphere

Abstract:With the adaptation of the FLASH code we simulate magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and vortices as well as their response in the magnetized three-dimensional (3D) solar atmosphere at different heights to understand the localized energy transport processes. In the solar atmosphere strongly structured by gravitational and magnetic forces, we launch a localized velocity pulse (in horizontal and vertical components) within a bottom layer of 3D solar atmosphere modelled by initial VAL-IIIC conditions, which triggers waves and vortices. The rotation direction of vortices depends on the orientation of an initial perturbation. The vertical driver generates magnetoacoustic-gravity waves which result in oscillations of the transition region, and it leads to the eddies with their symmetry axis oriented vertically. The horizontal pulse excites all magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and horizontally oriented eddies. These waves propagate upwards, penetrate the transition region, and enter the solar corona. In the high-beta plasma regions the magnetic field lines move with the plasma and the temporal evolution show that they swirl with eddies. We estimate the energy fluxes carried out by the waves in the magnetized solar atmosphere and conclude that such wave dynamics and vortices may be significant in transporting the energy to sufficiently balance the energy losses in the localized corona. Moreover, the structure of the transition region highly affects such energy transports, and causes the channelling of the propagating waves into the inner corona.

Multi-Fluid MHD Simulations of Europa's Plasma Interaction: Effects of Variation in Europa's Atmosphere

Abstract:Europa's plasma interaction is inextricably coupled to its O2 atmosphere by the chemical processes that generate plasma from the atmosphere and the sputtering of magnetospheric plasma against Europa's ice to generate O2. Observations of Europa's atmosphere admit a range of possible densities and spatial distributions (Hall et al., 1998, https://doi.org/10.1086/305604). To better understand this system, we must characterize how different possible configurations of the atmosphere affect the 3D magnetic fields and bulk plasma properties near Europa. To accomplish this, we conducted a parameter study using a multi-fluid magnetohydrodynamic model for Europa's plasma interaction (Harris et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020ja028888). We varied parameters of Europa's atmosphere, as well as the conditions of Jupiter's magnetosphere, over 18 simulations. As the scale height and density of Europa's atmosphere increase, the extent and density of the ionosphere increase as well, generating strong magnetic fields that shield Europa's surface from impinging plasma on the trailing hemisphere. We also calculate the precipitation rate of magnetospheric plasma onto Europa's surface. As the O2 column density increased from (1-2.5) × 1014 cm-2, the precipitation rate decreased sharply then leveled off at 2 × 1024 ions/s for simulations with low magnetospheric plasma density and 6.4 × 1024 ions/s for simulations with high magnetospheric plasma density. These results indicate that the coupling between Europa's plasma populations and its atmosphere leads to feedback that limits increases in the ionosphere density.

Abstract:Interstellar magnetic fields influence all stages of the process of star formation, from the collapse of molecular cloud cores to the formation of protostellar jets. This requires us to have a full understanding of the physical properties of magnetized plasmas of different degrees of ionization for a wide range of densities and temperatures. We derive general equations governing the magneto-hydrodynamic evolution of a three-fluid medium of arbitrary ionization, also including the possibility of charged dust grains as the main charge carriers. In a companion paper (Pinto & Galli 2007), we complement this analysis computing accurate expressions of the collisional coupling coefficients. Over spatial and temporal scales larger than the so-called large-scale plasma limit and the collision-dominated plasma limit, and for non-relativistic fluid speeds, we obtain an advection-diffusion for the magnetic field. We derive the general expressions for the resistivities, the diffusion time scales and the heating rates in a three-fluid medium and we use them to estimate the evolution of the magnetic field in molecular clouds and protostellar jets. Collisions between charged particles significantly increase the value of the Ohmic resistivity during the process of cloud collapse, affecting in particular the decoupling of matter and magnetic field and enhancing the rate of energy dissipation. The Hall resistivity can take larger values than previously found when the negative charge is mostly carried by dust grains. In weakly-or mildy-ionized protostellar jets, ambipolar diffusion is found to occur on a time scale comparable to the dynamical time scale, limiting the validity of steady-state and nondissipative models to study the jet's structure.

Abstract:We study the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave propagation in the solar atmosphere consisting of the chromosphere and corona. Pressure enhancement and velocity shear are implemented simultaneously at the bottom of the chromosphere. The global propagation of the incurred MHD waves, including fast-mode and slow-mode magnetoacoustic waves as well as Alfven wave, can be identified. Wave front positions obtained numerically with respect to specific waves fit well with those calculated with local MHD wave speeds.

Abstract:Collisionless plasmas, mostly present in astrophysical and space environments, often require a kinetic treatment as given by the Vlasov equation. Unfortunately, the six-dimensional Vlasov equation can only be solved on very small parts of the considered spatial domain. However, in some cases, e.g. magnetic reconnection, it is sufficient to solve the Vlasov equation in a localized domain and solve the remaining domain by appropriate fluid models. In this paper, we describe a hierarchical treatment of collisionless plasmas in the following way. On the finest level of description, the Vlasov equation is solved both for ions and electrons. The next courser description treats electrons with a 10-moment fluid model incorporating a simplified treatment of Landau damping. At the boundary between the electron kinetic and fluid region, the central question is how the fluid moments influence the electron distribution function. On the next coarser level of description the ions are treated by an 10-moment fluid model as well. It may turn out that in some spatial regions far away from the reconnection zone the temperature tensor in the 10-moment description is nearly isotopic. In this case it is even possible to switch to a 5-moment description. This change can be done separately for ions and electrons. To test this multiphysics approach, we apply this full physics-adaptive simulations to the Geospace Environmental Modeling (GEM) challenge of magnetic reconnection.

Abstract:Heliospheric plasmas require multi-scale and multi-physics considerations. On one hand, MHD codes are widely used for global simulations of the solar-terrestrial environments, but do not provide the most elaborate physical description of space plasmas. Hybrid codes, on the other hand, capture important physical processes, such as electric currents and effects of finite Larmor radius, but they can be used locally only, since the limitations in available computational resources do not allow for their use throughout a global computational domain. In the present work, we present a new coupled scheme which allows to switch blocks in the block-adaptive grids from fluid MHD to hybrid simulations, without modifying the self-consistent computation of the electromagnetic fields acting on fluids (in MHD simulation) or charged ion macroparticles (in hybrid simulation). In this way, the hybrid scheme can refine the description in specified regions of interest without compromising the efficiency of the global MHD code.

Abstract:We have become heavily reliant on electrical technologies, from power grids to GPS to wireless communication. Any disruption of these systems will have severe global consequences. A major natural hazard for such electrical disruption is caused by solar wind disturbances that have dramatic geospace <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://impact.Estimates" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> are that a solar storm of the magnitude of the 1859 Carrington Solar Superstorm would cause over $2 trillion in damage today. In July 23, 2012, we had a near miss of a solar Superstorm that could have broken the record of largest such storms at Earth. To enable pre-emptive measures, developing accurate space weather forecasts is urgent. At the core of space weather forecasts is plasma physics, and kinetic turbulence, in particular. For example, the intense turbulence stirred up at the bow shock and foreshock have been shown to open up pathways for high velocity solar wind parcels to bypass the protective shield of the terrestrial magnetosphere and create disturbances in the ionosphere and lower atmosphere. A primary challenge in understanding kinetic turbulence and its global implications is its multi-scale nature, spanning from electron scales to macro scales of the magnetosphere. Current four-spacecraft missions with 3D formations, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) and Cluster, have made progress in our understanding of such turbulence. Yet the limitation of a fixed spacecraft formation size at a given time prohibits probing the multi-scale nature as well as the dynamical evolution of the phenomena. A transformative leap in our understanding of turbulence is expected with in-situ probes populating a 3D volume and forming multiple 'n-hedrons (n > 4)' in MHD to kinetic scales.

Abstract:A second-order path-conservative scheme with a Godunov-type finite-volume method has been implemented to advance the equations of single-fluid solar wind plasma magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in time. This code operates on the six-component composite grid system in three-dimensional spherical coordinates with hexahedral cells of quadrilateral frustum type. The generalized Osher–Solomon Riemann solver is employed based on a numerical integration of the path-dependent dissipation matrix. For simplicity, the straight line segment path is used, and the path integral is evaluated in a fully numerical way by a high-order numerical Gauss–Legendre quadrature. Besides its very close similarity to Godunov type, the resulting scheme retains the attractive features of the original solver: it is nonlinear, free of entropy-fix, differentiable, and complete, in that each characteristic field results in a different numerical viscosity, due to the full use of the MHD eigenstructure. By using a minmod limiter for spatial oscillation control, the path-conservative scheme is realized for the generalized Lagrange multiplier and the extended generalized Lagrange multiplier formulation of solar wind MHD systems. This new model that is second order in space and time is written in the FORTRAN language with Message Passing Interface parallelization and validated in modeling the time-dependent large-scale structure of the solar corona, driven continuously by Global Oscillation Network Group data. To demonstrate the suitability of our code for the simulation of solar wind, we present selected results from 2009 October 9 to 2009 December 29 show its capability of producing a structured solar corona in agreement with solar coronal observations.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3-D), time-dependent, numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model is used to investigate the evolution and interaction of two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the nonhomogeneous ambient solar wind. The background solar wind is constructed on the basis of the self-consistent source surface with observed line of sight of magnetic field and density from the source surface of 2.5 R-s to Earth's orbit (215 R-s) and beyond. The two successive CMEs occurring on 28 March 2001 and forming a multiple magnetic cloud in interplanetary space are chosen as a test case, in which they are simulated by means of a two high-density, high-velocity, and high-temperature magnetized plasma blobs model, and are successively ejected into the nonhomogeneous background solar wind medium along different initial launch directions. The dynamical propagation and interaction of the two CMEs between 2.5 and 220 R-s are investigated. Our simulation results show that, although the two CMEs are separated by 10 h, the second CME is able to overtake the first one and cause compound interactions and an obvious acceleration of the shock. At the L1 point near Earth the two resultant magnetic clouds in our simulation are consistent with the observations by ACE. In this validation study we find that this 3-D MHD model, with the self-consistent source surface as the initial boundary condition and the magnetized plasma blob as the CME model, is able to reproduce and explain some of the general characters of the multiple magnetic clouds observed by satellite.
