Abstract:In space plasmas, large-amplitude Alfvén waves can drive compressive perturbations, accelerate ion beams, and lead to plasma heating and the excitation of ion acoustic waves at kinetic scales. This energy channelling from fluid to kinetic scales represents a complementary path to the classical turbulent cascade. Here, we present observational and computational evidence to validate this hypothesis by simultaneously resolving the fluid-scale Alfvén waves, kinetic-scale ion acoustic waves, and their imprints on ion velocity distributions in the Earth's magnetopause boundary layer. We show that two coexisting compressive modes, driven by the magnetic pressure gradients of Alfvén waves, not only accelerate the ion tail population to the Alfvén velocity, but also heat the ion core population near the ion acoustic velocity and generate Debye-scale ion acoustic waves. Thus, Alfvén-acoustic energy channeling emerges as a viable mechanism for plasma heating near plasma boundaries where large-amplitude Alfvén waves are present.

Electron Dispersion and Parallel Electron Beam Observed Near the Separatrix

Abstract:The separatrix region is the region between the separatrix and the reconnection jet. Due to the ExB drift and velocity filter effect in which high-energy particles with high parallel speed can be seen prior to low-energy particles along the field line, electrons are separated from ions. The electron dynamics in this region is of interest; however it has not been studied in detail, because of the insufficient resolution of plasma data. We present a slow separatrix crossing event observed by Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellite constellation on 1 January 2016, from the magnetosheath side with high-resolution burst mode data. The electron edge and ion edge are clearly distinguished in the separatrix region. Two types of electron dispersion, one with a short duration (~0.3 s) and the other with a longer duration (~13 s) were detected between the electron and ion edges. The rapid dispersion (with small time scale) is mainly in the parallel direction, which might originate from a thin layer with non-frozen-in electrons close to the separatrix. The gradual (long time scale) dispersion is seen from parallel to perpendicular directions, which comes from the ExB drift of a curved D-shape distribution of electrons. The width of the electron diffusion region on the magnetosheath side is estimated based on MMS observation. The observation also reveals an unexpected parallel electron beam outside of the electron edge. Wave-particle interaction or parallel potential in the inflow region may be responsible for the generation of this electron population.
Charge Separations in the Geomagnetosphere

Abstract:Charges and electric currents source the electromagnetic field, and therefore the distribution and motions of charges determine its form. Charge separations may appear in various plasma boundary layers due to the inertia of electrons and ions or the trapping of the magnetic field. Based on the electric fields observed by MMS four spacecraft, the gradient of the electric field, as well as the charge density, can be obtained. The analysis on the electric field data acquired during dayside magnetopause crossing events by the MMS constellation shows a charge separation in the magnetopause boundary layer and that the positive charges are accumulated on the magnetospheric side while the negative charges are accumulated on the magnetosheath side. The charge separations in dayside, dawn side and dusk side magnetopause have been systematically explored. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of electric charge density in the inner magnetosphere is derived and analyzed based on the electric field measurements from September 2015 to December 2020 by MMS satellites. It is revealed that, the inner magnetosphere accumulates positive charge at dusk side and negative charge at dawn side, both of which vary with the magnetic activities. The charge and the electric field distribution confirm the presence of the Alfvén layer for the first time. In the Alfvén layer, the charge distribution has dawn-dusk asymmetry. The positive charge density at dusk is much greater than the negative charge density at dawn. These observations and analysis results could shed light on the structure of the magnetosphere and the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling during storms.

Abstract:Based on the two-fluid dynamics equations describing plasma flow in a cold magnetized medium,the propagation of Alfven waves initialized by a one-period-time field-aligned current at the top of the low-latitude ionosphere has been stimulated,the reflection and coupling of Alfven wave in the low-latitude ionosphere has been analyzed.The results show the reflection coefficient is larger at the bottom end of resonator,and the shear wave is reflected distinctly(reflection coefficient(R)≥0.6).If wave frequency is approximately equal to the cavity mode frequency,compressional Alfven wave that propagates across background magnetic field lines is generated while reflection occurs,then the disturbed magnetic field has effect to the local geomagnetic pulsations.And the results prouide a scientific warranty to explain the phenomena of the geomagentic pulsations.
Kinetic Alfvén Waves As a Source of Plasma Transport at the Dayside Magnetopause

Abstract:As the shocked solar wind with variable plasma density and magnetic field impinges on the dayside magnetopause, it is likely to generate large‐scale Alfvén waves at the solar wind magnetosphere interface. However, large gradients in the density and magnetic field at the magnetopause boundary effectively couple large‐scale Alfvén waves with kinetic Alfvén waves. In this paper we propose that the wave power converted into kinetic Alfvén waves may play an important role in plasma transport at the dayside magnetopause and in electron acceleration along field lines. The transport can occur because, unlike the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shear Alfvén wave, the kinetic Alfvén wave has an associated parallel electric field which breaks down the “frozen‐in” condition and decouples the plasma from field lines. We calculate the average deviation of the plasma from the field line from which we estimate the diffusion coefficient associated with these “bundles” of decoupled plasma to be approximately 109m²/s. The parallel electric field also may lead to acceleration of electrons along field lines in the magnetopause boundary and may possibly provide an explanation for observed counterstreaming electron beams characterized by energies of 50‐200 eV.
Spectra of Diffusion, Dispersion, and Dissipation for Kinetic Alfvénic and Compressive Turbulence: Comparison Between Kinetic Theory and Measurements from MMS

Abstract:We analyze measurements from Magnetospheric Multiscale mission to provide the spectra related with diffusion, dispersion, and dissipation, all of which are compared with predictions from plasma theory. This work is one example of magnetosheath turbulence, which is complex and diverse and includes more wave modes than the kinetic Alfvenic wave (KAW) mode studied here. The counter-propagation of KAW is identified from the polarities of cross-correlation spectra: CC(N-e, vertical bar B vertical bar), CC(V-e perpendicular to,B-perpendicular to), CC(V-e parallel to,B-parallel to), and CC(N-e,V-e parallel to). We propose the concepts of turbulence ion and electron diffusion ranges (T-IDRs and T-EDRs) and identify them practically based on the ratio between electric field power spectral densities in different reference frames: PSD(delta E'(i,local)/PSD(delta E-global) and PSD(delta E'(e,local))/PSD(delta E-global). The outer scales of the T-IDR and T-EDR are observed to be at the wavenumber of kd(i) similar to 0.2 and kd(e) similar to 0.1, where d(i) and d(e) are the proton and electron inertial lengths, respectively. The signatures of positive dispersion related to the Hall effect are illustrated observationally and reproduced theoretically with flat PSD(delta E-global) and steep PSD(delta B), as well as a bifurcation between PSD(delta V-i) and PSD(delta V-e). We calculate the dissipation rate spectra, 1. The "3D" (diffusion, dispersion, and dissipation) characteristics of kinetic Alfvenic and compressive plasma turbulence are therefore summarized as follows: positive dispersion due to the Hall effect appears in the T-IDR, while dominant parallel dissipation with energy transferred to electrons occurs mainly in the T-EDR.
The Effects of Non-Equilibrium Velocity Distributions on Alfvén Ion-Cyclotron Waves in the Solar Wind

Abstract:In this work, we investigate how the complex structure found in solar wind proton velocity distribution functions (VDFs), rather than the commonly assumed two-component bi-Maxwellian structure, affects the onset and evolution of parallel-propagating microinstabilities. We use the Arbitrary Linear Plasma Solver (ALPS), a numerical dispersion solver, to find the real frequencies and growth/damping rates of the Alfvén modes calculated for proton VDFs extracted from Wind spacecraft observations of the solar wind. We compare this wave behavior to that obtained by applying the same procedure to core-and-beam bi-Maxwellian fits of the Wind proton VDFs. We find several significant differences in the plasma waves obtained for the extracted data and bi-Maxwellian fits, including a strong dependence of the growth/damping rate on the shape of the VDF. By application of the quasilinear diffusion operator to these VDFs, we pinpoint resonantly interacting regions in velocity space where differences in VDF structure significantly affect the wave growth and damping rates. This demonstration of the sensitive dependence of Alfvén mode behavior on VDF structure may explain why the Alfvén ion-cyclotron instability thresholds predicted by linear theory for bi-Maxwellian models of solar wind proton background VDFs do not entirely constrain spacecraft observations of solar wind proton VDFs, such as those made by the Wind spacecraft.

Abstract:We investigate the propagation of Alfvén waves in the solar chromosphere, distinguishing between upward and downward propagating waves. We find clear evidence for the reflection of waves in the chromosphere and differences in propagation between cases with waves interpreted to be resonant or nonresonant with the overlying coronal structures. This establishes the wave connection to coronal element abundance anomalies through the action of the wave ponderomotive force on the chromospheric plasma, which interacts with chromospheric ions but not neutrals, thereby providing a novel mechanism of ion-neutral separation. This is seen as a "first ionization potential effect" when this plasma is lifted into the corona, with implications elsewhere on the Sun for the origin of the slow speed solar wind and its elemental composition. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.215201 © 2024 American Physical Society

A Bifurcated Reconnecting Current Sheet in the Turbulent Magnetosheath

Abstract:We report the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observation of a bifurcated reconnecting current sheet in Earth's dayside magnetosheath. Typical signatures of the ion diffusion region, including sub-Alfvénic demagnetized ion outflow, super-Alfvénic electron flows, Hall magnetic fields, electron heating, and energy dissipation, were found when MMS traversed the current sheet. The weak ion exhaust at the current sheet center was bounded by two current peaks in which super-Alfvénic electron flow directed toward and away from the X line were observed, respectively. Both off-center current peaks were primarily carried by electrons, one of which was supported by field-aligned current, while the other was mainly supported by current driven by electric field drift. The two current peaks also exhibit other differences, including electron heating, electron pitch angle distributions, electron nongyrotropy, energy dissipation, and magnetic field curvature. An ion-scale magnetic flux rope was detected between the two current peaks where electrons showed field-aligned bidirectional distribution, in contrast to field-aligned distribution parallel to the magnetic field in two current peaks. The observed current sheet was embedded in a background shear flow. This shear flow worked together with the guide field and asymmetric field and density to affect the electron dynamics. Our results reveal the reconnection properties in this special plasma and field regime which may be common in turbulent environments.

New Regime of Inertial Alfvén Wave Turbulence in the Auroral Ionosphere

Abstract:We investigate a new regime of inertial Alfvén wave turbulence observed in the very low beta plasma of the auroral ionosphere using electric and magnetic field measurements by the TRICE-2 sounding rocket. Combining the observed features of the electric and magnetic field frequency spectra with the linear properties of inertial Alfvén waves, we deduce the path of the anisotropic turbulent cascade through wave vector space. We find a critically balanced cascade through the magnetohydrodynamic scales of the inertial range down to the perpendicular scale of the plasma skin depth, followed by a parallel cascade to the ion inertial length. We infer damping of the cascade by a combination of proton cyclotron damping and electron Landau damping.
Study of Alfven Waves Propagation in Low-Latitude Ionosphere

Abstract:Alfven waves propagating in the low-latitude ionosphere exhibit particular characteristics. Firstly, sharp Alfven wave velocity gradient in the low-latitude ionosphere introduces Ionospheric Alfven resonator (IAR). Secondly, shear Alfven waves can propagate over a long distance at the latitude direction clue to the small magnetic inclination angle, and the propagation properties of Alfven waves can be affected by the ionospheric parameters at different latitudes. Thirdly, the low-latitude magnetic field lines are oblique to the ionosphere which is horizontally isotropic. In absence of the field aligned electric field and by use of IRI07 model and MSISE00 model, a two-fluid momentum model based on non-orthogonal coordinate system is used to simulate the characteristics of Alfven wave propagation, reflection, and coupling. The results indicate that IAR can also occur in the low-latitude ionosphere, and compressional mode excited by coupling with shear mode is likely to diffuse to the magnetic equator. It is also found that IAR tends to occur more frequently at night time than daytime with the resonance frequency increasing with the L-shell.

Direct observations of cross-scale energy transfer in space plasmas

Abstract:The collisionless plasmas in space and astrophysical environments are intrinsically multiscale in nature, behaving as conducting fluids at macroscales and kinetically at microscales comparable to ion- and/or electron-gyroradii. A fundamental question in understanding the plasma dynamics is how energy is transported and dissipated across different scales. Here, we present spacecraft measurements in the solar wind upstream of the terrestrial bow shock, in which the macroscale ultra-low-frequency waves and microscale whistler waves simultaneously resonate with the ions. The ion acceleration from ultra-low-frequency waves leads to velocity distributions unstable to the growth of whistler waves, which in turn resonate with the electrons to complete cross-scale energy transfer. These observations, consistent with numerical simulations in the occurrence of phase-bunched ion and electron distributions, also highlight the importance of anomalous resonance, a nonlinear modification of the classical cyclotron resonance, in the cross-scale wave coupling and energy transfer processes.

Abstract:The differential heating of electrons and ions by turbulence in weakly collisional magnetized plasmas and the scales at which such energy dissipation is most effective are still debated. Using a large data sample measured in Earth's magnetosheath by the magnetospheric multiscale mission and the coarse-grained energy equations derived from the Vlasov-Maxwell system, we find evidence of a balance over two decades in scales between the energy cascade and dissipation rates. The decline of the cascade rate at kinetic scales (in contrast with a constant one in the inertial range), is balanced by an increasing ion and electron heating rates, estimated via the pressure strain. Ion scales are found to contribute most effectively to ion heating, while electron heating originates from both ion and electron scales. Diffusion in Velocity Space of Solar Wind Protons Exposed to Parallel and Oblique Plasma Waves

Abstract:The solar wind plasma is permeated by all kinds of waves with a broad range of wavelengths and frequencies. Kinetic plasma waves in particular can resonantly interact with the ions, a process that is described within quasilinear theory as diffusion. The resulting effects on the proton velocity distribution function (VDF) are discussed. Theoretical predictions are compared with detailed measurements made in-situ by Helios, and found to comply favourably with resonant diffusion of the protons in the wave field. The shape of the proton VDF, showing an anisotropic core and a beam at positive velocities in the solar wind frame, can well be explained by scattering of the protons in weakly compressive and obliquely propagating Alfven/ion-cyclotron and fast/slow-magnetoacoustic waves.

Abstract:Based on the observation from Van Allen Probes, we report an event of intense and simultaneous electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) and chorus waves inside the low-density plasmatrough. By calculating the scattering rates and performing the diffusion simulations, we for the first time evaluate the combined scattering of suprathermal electrons by EMIC and chorus waves in the low-density plasmatrough. Landau acceleration of suprathermal electrons by EMIC waves is mainly restricted at large pitch angles while their scattering loss by chorus waves occurs at small pitch angles well below 90 degrees. When EMIC and chorus waves are simultaneously present, the scattering of suprathermal electrons by the two waves is very different from that by each type of waves alone. EMIC waves play a complementary role in the scattering of suprathermal electrons by chorus waves, which facilitate the scattering of suprathermal electrons over all pitch angles. The near-equatorially minoring suprathermal electrons are firstly scattered toward intermediate pitch angles by EMIC waves and further toward the loss cone by chorus waves. Our results highlight the complementary role of different types of magnetospheric waves in the suprathermal electron scattering, which potentially have vital implications for the dynamics of suprathermal electrons in the planetary magnetosphere.
In Situ Observations of Separatrices in a Strong-guide-field Reconnection at the Magnetopause

Abstract:The reconnection in nearly symmetric inflow boundary conditions with a strong guide field of three is detected at the magnetopause. The thin current sheet was well resolved by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, which revealed that there is a pair of low-density separatrices and a pair of higher-density separatrices. Electron flow is accelerated toward the X-line along the low-density side and ejected out along the higher-density side. All flows are super-Alfvénic, but the outflow velocity is much lower than the inflow velocity. It is further shown that the width of higher-density separatrices is about twice that of the low-density separatrices. Significant and opposite electric field activity is observed on both sides of the current sheet. Our observations show that the separatrix regions between the two sides of strong-guide-field reconnection are significantly different in structure and plasma properties, which in turn affect the acceleration and heating of electrons.
