Abstract:Three-dimensional water entry of a structure with complex geometry is investigated by a parallel compressible model. The projection method is adopted for the present high-order difference model. The convection term is discretized by a constrained interpolation profile method. The free surface is captured by a tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing with slope weighting scheme. The compressible multiphase model is realized by supplementing the equation of state. It can automatically handle compressible and incompressible areas, which considers the mixing compressibility effect. The benchmarks are the water entry of a sphere, water entry of a horizontal cylinder, and water entry of the single skeg and twin skeg. Special attention of this study is focused on the parallelism algorithm, compressibility effect, and the application of the asymmetric water entry of the skeg. Furthermore, the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the structure can be accurately predicted. The highly nonlinear free surface can be simulated with fairly good accuracy. Air pocket and secondary impact can be reproduced well. The accurate numerical prediction of the impact load with the compressibility of asymmetric water entry of the structure with complex geometry is vital for the design of the structure and the safety of the passengers. These are the further development of the present model and help us understand the short and destructive slamming process.

Abstract:Aerodynamic heating in hypersonic flow presents one of the most serious challenges in the design of space vehicles. In the present study, heat flux reduction mechanism of the pulsed counterflowing jet from the nose of a blunt body is numerically investigated. Flow field around the hemisphere model is calculated in hypersonic free stream of Mach number 10 and Knudsen number 0.4. Considering that the external flow field is highly rarefied, recent works have demonstrated the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) technique to accurately predict the flow field under steady-state conditions. For supersonic flow with a counterflowing jet, the mean free path could vary by orders of magnitude within the computation domain and the computational mesh size in DSMC should be of one third of local mean free path (MFP) of the gas due to the requirement of selecting colliding partners among particles. Therefore, the open-source SPARTA code with octree Cartesian mesh is utilized in our research with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR), which has been widely used in modern DSMC codes. AMR is crucial for efficient solutions of multi-scale problems characterized by large gradients of parameters in localized areas of the computational domain. Currently, tree-based methods have being developed for extremely large scale AMR simulations with billions of cells. As a conclusion, significant decreases of surface heat flux are obtained and counterflowing jet is proved to be effective on heat flux reduction in the vicinity of the stagnation point.

Abstract:Underwater exhaust produces an intricate unsteady two-phase flow field. For exploring the methods to predict the structure of air-water flow field and revealing the interaction of gas and water, three-dimensional underwater gas jet model with the VOF multiphase flow tracking method was adopted to simulate the transient flow field of gas jet into water. The air-water two-phase flow and its acoustic characteristic of turbulent gas exhausted from underwater nozzles were experimentally investigated in the early stages. Process of bubbles formation, detachment, fragmentation and coalescence were recorded clearly. The simulated results which were compared with the prior experimental results proved that the model almost accurately catches the behaviour of underwater bubbles. A few points were set in the two phase flow field to monitor pressure fluctuation. It had shown that higher air flow rate causes intense gas-column contraction and consequent bubble fragmentation, leading to higher amplitude and frequency of pressure fluctuation.

Abstract:The standard k-epsilon two-equation model in conjunction with a modified wall function method is used to investigate three-dimensional turbulent flow in a complex geometry. Flow patterns for different Reynolds numbers and various sections are given. Comparison of the numerical results with the experimental data obtained by 3-component Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) is conducted. Good agreement is achieved between the measured and predicted results.

Abstract:This paper is Part II of the two-paper series 'HALO3D: An All-Mach Approach to Hypersonic Flows Simulation' presenting advances in a monolithic flow simulation software for the design of high-speed aircraft. Part II highlights the methodology behind the continuum regime finite-rate surface chemistry, weak-ionisation, and rarefied regime Direct Simulation Monte Carlo modules. Validation and benchmark simulations of flows over a 2D cylinder, the 3D RAM-C II geometry, and the 3D Lockheed Martin X-33 geometry are provided. Within HALO3D, a Hessian-based multiphysics automatic mesh adaptation methodology yields optimal solutions that ought to provide valuable benchmarks for verifying other hypersonic flow simulation tools. Such mesh optimisation automatically generates a common truly mesh-independent solution across the continuum and rarefied regimes, taking into account various thermo-chemical models. These developments establish HALO3D as a mature, readily extendible software package for hypersonic aircraft analysis.

Abstract:This paper investigates the behavior of finite-size particles in a turbulent channel flow using a custom direct numerical simulation solver within the FOAM-Extend framework. The solver integrates the cut-cell immersed boundary module with a Lagrangian particle-tracking subroutine capable of simulating the motion of both spherical and non-spherical particles. The study investigates the complex interactions between particles and turbulent structures, offering insights into how particle shape and orientation affect their behavior within the flow field. Additionally, it examines the collision dynamics of two spherical particles in a turbulent channel. The simulations reveal that particle shape significantly influences particle trajectories, rotation, and their interactions with turbulent structures. The Q-criterion visualization showed the creation of hairpin and vortex ring structures shed by the particles. Finally, the close proximity and collision of particles was shown to significantly modify the flow pattern and particle dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we will study the flow of two immiscible fluids (air/water) through a sudden expansion in a horizontal channel. The first part of the paper will be a detailed bibliography study of sudden expansion problems followed by a mathematical and numerical study where detailed equations and numerical methods used for the numerical simulation are presented. The second part of the paper represents the numerical results obtained. First, we will validate our numerical model with the experimental results obtained by Chalfi and Ghiaasiaan (Int J Multiph Flow 34(1):2–12, 2008. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijmultiphaseflow.2007.09.004). The validation will be for the pressure distribution in the channel and the pressure jump over the sudden expansion. A comparison will be also done with the experimental results from Chalfi and Ghiaasiaan (2008) and the theoretical model from Armand-type void-quality expression for the pressure with different Reynolds numbers. After that, a numerical study will be done with a different ratio of the same geometry, pressure and velocity parameter will be studied and the jump over these variables is captured at the sudden expansion. The numerical part is done with the FEniCS platform which is a powerful finite-element computational open-source scientific platform.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of numerical simulations of high-velocity turbulent air flows in a plane channel with a variable cross section exhibiting sudden expansion with allowance for coupled heat transfer with copper plates modeling the sensitive elements of heat flux sensors. The simulations are performed for conditions of a high-enthalpy short-duration wind tunnel whose specific features are the short duration of the test regime and unsteady "falling" conditions at the model channel entrance. The wave structure of the supersonic flow, which affects the heat fluxes at the walls, is analyzed for various Mach numbers at the model channel entrance. The numerical algorithm is validated on the basis of experimental data on heating of the sensitive elements of heat flux sensors for unsteady input conditions at the channel entrance. The influence of the Mach number, static parameters, and stagnation parameters on the rate of heating of the sensitive elements located at various points in the channel is studied numerically. The heat fluxes calculated under constant and "falling" conditions at the channel entrance are compared. It is shown that the accuracy of heat flux modeling can be increased by taking into account the intensity of oscillations of the flow parameters and their changes along the channel.

Abstract:A new variable structure chamber was designed to plasma reaction with two-stage showerhead, and its flow filed dynamic control equation was analyzed and meshed by ICEM. The simulation research for the meshed models was analyzed by a commercial software-Fluent, by changing various parameters such as mass flow inlet, height, diameter and section of outlet. The result shows that the height and diameter variation for chamber has a little influence on the pressure upon susceptor. However, when the mass flow increases in inlet, the pressure improves, and it also changes as the section variation of outlet.

Abstract:This study investigates numerically the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics of a T-junction mixing, where a porous media flow is vertically discharged in a 3D fully developed channel flow. The fluid equations for the porous medium are solved in a pore structure level using an Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski turbulence model and validated with open literature data. Overall, two types of porous structures, consisted of square pores, are investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers: an in-line and a staggered pore structure arrangement. The flow patterns, including the reattachment length in the channel, the velocity field inside the porous medium as well as the fluctuation velocity at the interface, are found to be strongly affected by the velocity ratio between the transversely interacting flow streams. In addition, the heat transfer examination of the flow domain reveals that the temperature distribution in the porous structure is more uniform for the staggered array. The local heat transfer distributions inside the porous structure are also studied, and the general heat transfer rates are correlated in terms of area-averaged Nusselt number accounting for the effects of Reynolds number, velocity ratio as well as the geometrical arrangement of the porous structures.

Abstract:Evaluation on liquid metal heat dissipating capacity in an extreme working condition,a heat flux 100 W/cm~2 in space environment,was carried out by 3D numerical simulation.As a result, channel II proposed in this paper is provided with an outstanding performance while taking various factors into the consideration.Furthermore,parametric studies were implemented on the "Inverted T" channel with same cross-section area.Finally,scattered and reverse flow in such "Inverted T" channel took on a great heat dissipating and temperature equilibrium capacity for the extreme working condition.

Abstract:A modeling of the turbulent flow in a complex passage with dynamical fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is established on the generalized variational principle. A monolithic coupling method on the finite element formulations (FEM) is used to realize numerical computation of the flow with dynamical FSI. The comparisons with LES show that the results on the FEM formulations suggested in this paper are favorable, and the computing effort is economical.

Abstract:Rarefied gas flow into a vacuum through short linearly diverging and converging channels has been examined with the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Solution to the problem has been suggested using complete geometric setup with quite large areas on inlet and outlet of a model channel in examined geometry. A mass flow rate through the channel and flow field both inside the channel and upstream and downstream have been calculated in a wide range of gas rarefaction. These calculation results are comparable to corresponding data for the channel with constant cross section. A strong impact of channel geometry and gas rarefaction has been proved.

Abstract:Supersonic gas flow from an annular nozzle into a low-pressure chamber is studied numerically using kinetic and continuum approaches. Such flows find applications in gas-jet plasma-chemical technologies using an electron beam passing through an axial channel. The study is performed by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method and by solving continuum equations using ANSYS Fluent software. It is shown that the solutions obtained are in good agreement with each other even in low-density regions of the electron beam channel. This leads to the conclusion that ANSYS Fluent software is suitable for simulating flows of this type.

Abstract:Three-dimensional numerical model based upon explicit algebraic stress turbulence model with VOF was developed for the simulation of open-channel subcritical junction-flow. The finite volume method and staggered grid were used to discritize the equations, which were solved with the SIMPLE algorithm. Blocked grid arrangement was used for the complex geometry of the junction. The comparisons between numerical results with the measured data and k-ε model are indicated that the model could simulate with high accuracy the peculiar three dimensional flow characteristic of the confluence flow.

Abstract:Bend flow is different from regular flow because of the existence of secondary flow which makes the bend flow much more complicated. As the secondary flow has significant influence on water flow, sediment transportation and river bed evolution, we take the secondary flow into account through the calculation of the dispersion stresses arisen from the integration of the products of the discrepancy between the mean and true velocity distributions. The orthogonal body-fitted coordinate is adopted to make the finite difference method applicable to irregular boundaries. The staggered grid system is adopted and the finite difference equations are solved by ADI method. We compare the numerical simulation results of 2D NS model with and without the consideration of the secondary flow to the measured data from a curved flume experiment. The results demonstrate that the model is in good agreement with the real flow and can well demonstrate the significant effects of the secondary flow in bend :flow.

Abstract:The database of fully developed turbulent channel flow at low Reynolds number is set up through direct numerical simulations. The budget of dissipation-rate of turbulent kinetic energy is calculated and some existing models for the transport equation of the dissipation rate are evaluated. A new model for the turbulent production and viscous destruction terms is given. It makes a considerable improvement in the near-wall behavior. A new flow structure contributing much to high kurtosis levels in transverse velocity fluctuation in viscous sublayer is found. The common characters they possessed are described.

Abstract:The three-dimensional two-phase flow dynamics inside a microfluidic device of complex geometry is simulated using a parallel, hybrid front-tracking/level-set solver. The numerical framework employed circumvents numerous meshing issues normally associated with constructing complex geometries within typical computational fluid dynamics packages. The device considered in the present work is constructed via a module that defines solid objects by means of a static distance function. The construction combines primitive objects, such as a cylinder, a plane, and a torus, for instance, using simple geometrical operations. The numerical solutions predicted encompass dripping and jetting, and transitions in flow patterns are observed featuring the formation of drops, ‘pancakes’, plugs, and jets, over a wide range of flow rate ratios. We demonstrate the fact that vortex formation accompanies the development of certain flow patterns, and elucidate its role in their underlying mechanisms. Experimental visualisation with a high-speed imaging are also carried out. The numerical predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.
