Abstract:The flow structure around a cylinder group in cross flow was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted in an open channel. The cylinder group was consisted of 19 identical cylinders arranged symmetrically in two concentric circles and one located in the centre. Wake flow structure behind the cylinder group was measured with an Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry. For comparison, the wake flow structure of a single cylinder with an equal diameter to the external diameter of the cylinder group was also measured. The results show that the flow pattern around the cylinder group has some significant differences compared to a single cylinder. There exists vortex shedding behind the cylinder group, and the vortex formation length of the cylinder group is longer than that of a single cylinder. The flow through the gap of the cylinder group plays an import role in the wake, which is the mainly factor causing the differences. The velocity profiles measured along the transverse reveal a larger defect for the case of cylinder group compared to that for a single cylinder. The power spectral density distributions show that the Strouhal number based on the external diameter of the cylinder group is smaller than the that of a single cylinder.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of real surface roughness on channel flow using direct numerical simulation assisted by a ghost cell immersed boundary method (DNS-GCIBM). The principles and implementations of DNS-GCIBM are first introduced. Two test cases, including the two-dimensional flow around a cylinder and the three-dimensional flow in a sinusoidal roughness channel are employed to demonstrate the practicability and accuracy of the proposed approach, especially in numerical studies on the rough wall-bounded flow. Using DNS-GCIBM, channel flows under conditions of Ma = 0.3 and Reτ≈300, with both the real-world and regular roughness surfaces are studied. The results are statistically analyzed using the triple decomposition technique. The outer layer similarity in the streamwise mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles indicate that the impact of roughness on the boundary layer primarily localizes within roughness sub-layer. In the streamwise mean velocity profile, both regular and real-world roughness surfaces induce obvious increase to the roughness function ΔU+ as roughness height Ra increases, while discrepancy of ΔU+ between the two types of roughness can be found. Furthermore, turbulence statistics are sensitive to the variations of Ra. As Ra increases, it becomes challenging to organize coherent structures near the wall, resulting in the reduction of streamwise Reynolds stress intensity. In addition, although the skin friction coefficient and ΔU+ are almost the same, the real-world roughness and the corresponding equivalent regular roughness manifest different flow structures near the wall. The real-world roughness contributes greater spatial inhomogeneity but lower turbulence intensity.

Abstract:The amplitude and frequency modulation of near-wall flow structures by the large-scale motions in outer regions is studied in turbulent channel flows. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is applied to investigate the interactions between the near-wall motions and the large-scale flow modes of the outer regions based on two datasets from direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flows at Reynolds numbers of 550–1000. The fluctuations in the fields u+, v+, w+ and Reynolds shear stress −(uv)+ are studied to understand the mechanism of amplitude and frequency modulation of the near-wall structures by the outer large-scale motions. The amplitude modulation coefficient of the Reynolds shear stress is larger than that of the velocity components. The frequency modulation effect has an opposite influence in the spanwise direction compared to the streamwise direction. The streamwise characteristic frequency increases with increasing large-scale velocity. However, the spanwise characteristic frequency exhibits a decreasing trend with increasing large-scale velocity in the near-wall region.
Experimental Study of Three-Dimensional Obstacle Effect on Velocity Structure of Density Currents

Abstract:The density currents&#8217; velocity structure, which can be divided into a jet region (JR) and a wall region (WR, thickness hr) according to their distinct dynamics, may be significantly modified as the current crosses an obstacle, thus leading to variations in the flow propagation process. However, there is a lack of direct observation of the response of different parts of the velocity structure to a three-dimensional obstacle due to the challenges in 3-D flow field measurement. To address this knowledge gap, a series of laboratory experiments have been devised to examine the separate influence of the WR and JR on mixing and propagation processes of density currents. A particle image velocimetry system and a high-speed camera are used to obtain the detailed velocity and vorticity fields with high temporal resolution. Compared with the no-obstacle counterpart that is uniform in the spanwise direction, the time-averaged current height (hc) in obstacle cases gradually thickens in that direction, and both the WR and JR thicken accordingly. The ratio of the obstacle height (ho) to hc influences the velocity structure. Specifically, hr/hc upstream is larger than that downstream when ho>hc, and vice versa. It is noteworthy that the variation of hr/hc in the spanwise direction is nonmonotonic with ho. Furthermore, the obstacle also influences the velocity profile upstream. The flow is obstructed on the center line when ho>hc. When ho<hr, the obstacle divides the wall region upstream into two parts above and below ho, and the gradient of the velocity profiles of the upper one is larger than the lower one. The results suggest that the obstacle plays an important role in determining the dissipation on the interface between the JR and the environment, and changing the current&#8217;s capacity on carrying the sediment since both the settling and resuspension of particles and sediment mostly happen in the WR. Our findings can improve understanding of the influence of submarine topography and provide a reference for underwater engineering.
Numerical Computations of the Flow in A Finite Diverging Channel

Abstract:The flow in a finite diverging channel opening into a large space and resembling the experimental prototype of Putkaradze and Vorobieff (2006) was numerically investigated. The effects of the Reynolds number, initial condition, intersection angle, length of the wedge edges, and the outer boundary condition were examined. The numerical results showed that the flow in the wedge undergoes a change from symmetrical flow to unsymmetrical flow with a weak backflow, then a vortical (circulation) flow and finally an unsteady jet flow as the Reynolds number is increased for an intersection angle of 32° and a wedge edge of length 30 times the width of the inlet slit. For the unsteady flow, the jet attached to one side of the wedge constantly loses stability and rolls up into a mushroom-shaped vortex-pair near the outlet of the wedge. As the intersection angle is increased to 50°, a stable jet flow is observed as a new regime between the vortex and unsteady regimes. Both the intersection angle and the wedge length have negative effects on the stability of the flow, although the effect of the wedge length on the critical Reynolds number for the symmetry-breaking instability is not pronounced. The outer boundary condition was found not to affect the flow patterns inside the wedge significantly. At a certain Re regime above the onset of symmetry-breaking instability, the flows evolve into steady state very slowly except for the initial stage in the case of decreasing flow flux. Two different solutions can be observed within the normal observation time for the experiment, providing a possible explanation for the hysteresis phenomenon in the experiment.

Abstract:An experimental investigation on flow past nine cylinders in a square configuration was carried out using the particle image velocimetry technique and load cell in a water channel. The center-to-center spacing ratio L/D was in the range of 1.5-3.0 and the Reynolds number Re was varied from 1500 to 5000. The effects of spacing ratio and Reynolds number on the instantaneous time-averaged flow fields and force coefficients are investigated. The results show that three distinct flow regimes are categorized with variation of the spacing ratios and Reynolds numbers, namely, shielding flow regime, transition flow regime and vortex shedding flow regime. Depending on the interferences of shear layers around the nine cylinders, each flow regime is further divided into two types of flow patterns. An interesting feature of bistable flow pattern with different flow modes is observed at small spacing ratio L/D = 1.5. The non-dimensional vortex shedding frequencies appear to be more associated with the individual shear layers rather than the multiple cylinders. Moreover, force analysis, streamline topologies and Reynolds stress contours are presented to elucidate the effects of spacing ratio and Reynolds number on the complex wake interference among the nine cylinders. The flow characteristics and force coefficients are found to be more sensitive to L/D rather than Re.

Abstract:In order to investigate the influence of surface roughness on turbulent flow and examine the wall-similarity hypothesis of Townsend, three-dimensional numerical study of turbulent channel flow over smooth and cube-rough walls with different roughness height has been carried out by using large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with immersed boundary method (IBM). The effects of surface roughness array on mean and fluctuating velocity profiles, Reynolds shear stress, and typical coherent structures such as quasi-streamwise vortices (QSV) in turbulent channel flow are obtained. The significant influences on turbulent fluctuations and structures are observed in roughness sub-layer (five times of roughness height). However, no dramatic modification of the log-law of the mean flow velocity and turbulence fluctuations can be found by surface cube roughness in the outer layer. Therefore, the results support the wall-similarity hypothesis. Moreover, the von Karman constant decreases with the increase of roughness height in the present simulation results. Besides, the larger size of QSV and more intense ejections are induced by the roughness elements, which is crucial for heat and mass transfer enhancement.

Abstract:The flow around two tandem circular cylinders was studied by a three-dimensional numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations at Re=220. The improved virtual boundary method was applied to model the no-slip boundary condition of the cylinders. The results show that as the spacing ratio L/D ≥4, the three dimensionality occurs in the wake. When L/D≤3.5 the wake keeps a two-dimensional state at the Reynolds number Re=220. The critical spacing for the appearance of three-dimensional instability obtained is at the range 3.5L/D4, similar to the critical spacing found in two-dimensional case. Two sources of instability from upstream and downstream cylinder generate a complicated vortex structures in the wake, investigated by streamlines topology analysis in the streamwise plane. Many other interesting problems were also addressed in this paper.

Abstract:Gas-liquid two-phase flows frequently occur in various flow channels in engineering systems with heat and mass transport processes. The channel geometry affects thermo-fluid behavior generally. Extensive research is done on gas-liquid two-phase flows in circular and annular channels with a wealth of local two-phase flow measurement data. Square channels are used in various engineering disciplines, but there has only been limited experimental research on two-phase flows in square channels with local flow parameter measurements. For two-phase flow analyses in square channels, knowledge of the flow characteristics and model validation against some key parameters, such as the drift-flux parameters and the interfacial area concentration, is crucial. An experiment for upward bubbly flows was conducted in a large square channel with an inside cross-section of 0.136 x 0.136 m. A four-sensor optical probe and a hotfilm anemometer were used to measure local two-phase flow parameters at 66 points in an octant symmetric triangular cross-section at three axial locations. The measured two-phase flow parameters were the void fraction, axial gas velocity, axial liquid velocity, interfacial area concentration, and bubble Sauter mean diameter. The flow characteristics through flow development were investigated based on the local measurement data. The local measurement data directly determined the drift-flux parameters through their definitions. The distribution parameters determined through experimentation could be reproduced by the existing correlation for large circular pipes indicating that the flow characteristics in large square channels may be similar to those in large circular pipes. Based on existing drift-flux correlations for large circular pipes, the void fractions in the current experiment could be fairly predicted. Furthermore, the interfacial area concentrations could be predicted by existing correlations with reasonable accuracy. (c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The spatial evolution of vortices and transition to three-dimensionality in the wake of two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement have been numerically studied. An improved virtual body method developed from the virtual boundary method is used here. A Reynolds number range between 220 and 270 has been considered, and the spacing between two cylinders is selected as L/D=3 and L/D=3.5. When L/D=3, the secondary vortices of Mode-A are seen to appear at Re=240 and persist over the range of the Reynolds number of 240～270. When L/D=3.5, the similar critical Reynolds number has been found at Re=250. No obvious discontinuity has been found in the Strouhal-Reynolds number relationship, and this is different from three-dimensional flow around a single cylinder at the critical Reynolds number. The spanwise wavelength is about four times the diameter of the cylinder, and it is the characteristic wavelength for Mode-A instability. This paper can give some foremost insight into the three-dimensional instability of flow by complicated geometrical configuration.

Abstract:Three-dimensional elliptic simulations were carried out to study mixed-convection heat transfer in a horizontal square channel with heated and cooled side walls. Governing equations were solved for Re=100, Pγ=0.72 and Gγ/Re2=0∼50 by the SMIPLE method. Three-dimensional spiral flows were observed along the longitudinal direction of the channel. Secondary flow caused by buoyancy force gave rise to flow reversal at the thermally developing region. The flow reversal regions generated by secondary flow near the upper and lower walls partially prevented the main flow. This flow situation could be considered a fundamental phenomenon for mixed convection at the thermally developing region of the horizontal square channel. The effects of Gγ/Re2 on the local heat transfer and the intensity of secondary flow were also discussed.

Abstract:The paper presents an experimental investigation of the flow around two bluff bodies in a tandem arrangement. Two different configurations were investigated. The first one concerns two square cylinders (SS case) whereas in the second setup, a triangular cylinder was used as an upstream object (TS case). Particular attention was devoted to examining the effect of the gap space G between cylinders (from 1 to 6) on the flow structure and dynamics of vortices. The study also includes measurements conducted for single square and single triangular cylinders to show how the second object modifies the flow field. It was found that the wake behind each object is always wider for the SS case regardless of G . When G is less than or equal to 3 for the TS case, the slender body regime is seen in the flow field which for the SS case is normally present for G < 1 . 5 . Consequently, distinctive vortex shedding frequencies cannot be distinguished in the gap for the TS case when G ≤ 3 . When G ≥ 4 , twice as high values of the Strouhal number S t are reported in the gap for the TS case compared to the SS case. Downstream the second object, S t gradually decreases from ∼ 0.245 to ∼ 1.14 with increasing G from 1 to 4 for the TS case, whereas for 5 ≤ G ≤ 6 distinctive vortex shedding frequencies are no longer observed.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to characterizing the three-dimensional effects in a cavitating flow generated in a venturi-type profile. Experimental measurements based on 2D3C (two-dimensional-three-component) stereoscopic particle image velocimetry are conducted to obtain the three components of the velocity field in multiple vertical planes aligned with the main flow direction, from the center of the channel to the side walls. Time-resolved acquisitions are conducted, so not only time-averaged quantities but also velocity fluctuations can be discussed. The attention was focused on configurations of cloud cavitation, where the attached cavity experiences large-scale periodical oscillations and shedding of clouds of vapor. Although the water channel is purely two-dimensional, some significant flow velocities in the third direction (depth of the test section) were measured. Some of those velocities were found to be related to small differences between the boundary conditions on the two sides, such as minor gaps between the sides and the bottom wall, while others reflect intrinsic three-dimensional mechanisms inside the cavitation area, such as side jets that contribute to the periodical instability process. These mechanisms are discussed, and a possible 3D (three-dimensional) structure of the cavitating flow is proposed.

Coherent Structures and Their Interactions in Smooth Open Channel Flows

Abstract:The study presents experimental results of coherent structures and their interactions in a smooth open channel flow based on measurement of instantaneous two-dimensional velocity vectors with particle image velocimetry. The sampled data were analyzed through techniques of ensemble average, vortex extraction, and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). Redistribution of turbulent kinetic energy is observed in the near-surface region. The spanwise vortices, which are closely related to hairpin vortices, exhibit a clear dependence on Reynolds number of the flow. Hairpin vortex packets and long streamwise vortices are identified as typical large-scale and super-scale coherent structures, respectively, and their interaction is revealed by examining the relationship between the population density of spanwise vortices and the coefficient functions of the first POD mode. Interactions between large-scale and super-scale structures have been recognized to support the hypothesis of closed-loop feedback cycle.

Abstract:This study investigates numerically the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics of a T-junction mixing, where a porous media flow is vertically discharged in a 3D fully developed channel flow. The fluid equations for the porous medium are solved in a pore structure level using an Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski turbulence model and validated with open literature data. Overall, two types of porous structures, consisted of square pores, are investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers: an in-line and a staggered pore structure arrangement. The flow patterns, including the reattachment length in the channel, the velocity field inside the porous medium as well as the fluctuation velocity at the interface, are found to be strongly affected by the velocity ratio between the transversely interacting flow streams. In addition, the heat transfer examination of the flow domain reveals that the temperature distribution in the porous structure is more uniform for the staggered array. The local heat transfer distributions inside the porous structure are also studied, and the general heat transfer rates are correlated in terms of area-averaged Nusselt number accounting for the effects of Reynolds number, velocity ratio as well as the geometrical arrangement of the porous structures.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical study on the two-dimensional laminar mixed convective flow and heat transfer around two identical isothermal square cylinders arranged in tandem and confined in a channel. The spacing between the cylinders is fixed with four widths of the cylinder and the blockage ratio and the Prandtl number are fixed at 0.1 and 0.7 respectively. The mixed convective flow and heat transfer is simulated by high accuracy multidomain pseudospectral method. The Reynolds number (Re) is studied in the range 80⩽Re⩽150, the Richardson number (Ri) demonstrating the influence of thermal buoyancy ranges from 0 to 1. Numerical results reveal that, with the thermal buoyancy effect, the mixed convective flow sheds vortex behind the cylinders and keeps periodic oscillating. The variations of characteristic quantities related to flow and heat transfer processes, such as the overall drag and lift coefficients and the Nusselt numbers, are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the influence of thermal buoyancy on the fluid flow and heat transfer are discussed and analysed.
An Experimental Study of Co-Current Two-Phase Flow Patterns in Small Triangular Channels

Abstract:Experimental investigations have been carried out to study co-current upward air-water two-phase flow patterns in small, vertical triangular channels. Two equilateral triangular channels with side lengths of 2.5 and 1.5 mm, corresponding to 1.443 and 0.866 mm in hydraulic diameter were tested. Flow characteristics were studied by both visual observations using a high-speed motion analyzer (Kodak Ektapro-1000) and simultaneous measurements of transient pressure drops across the channels. The experimental results show that the typical flow patterns encountered in the conventionally large-sized vertical circular tubes, such as bubble flow, slug flow, chum now and annular flow, were also found in the small triangular channels. However, the characteristics of the bubbly flow in the small triangular channels are markedly different from those in large circular tubes. It is found that, unlike randomly-dispersed bubbles in a continuous liquid phase in large circular tubes, in the triangular-channel bubbly flow regime, a single train of bubbles, essentially elliptical in shape, spanned almost the entire cross section of the channel. It is also found that in the slug flow regime, slug-bubbles were substantially elongated. The transition boundaries from slug flow to churn flow and from churn flow to annular flow in the flow regime map were found to be shifted to right as the channel size was reduced.

Abstract:The structural features of turbulence at the free surface of a channel flow have been experimentally investigated. The experiments were conducted in a horizontal channel of large aspect ratio in the (depth based) Reynolds number range of 2800–8800. The results indicate that the persistent structures on the free surface can be classified as upwellings, downdrafts, and spiral eddies. Upwellings are shown to be related to the bursts originating in the sheared region at the channel bottom and the eddies are seen to be generated at the edges of the upwellings. The eddies often merge if rotating in the same direction, and form “pairs” if rotating in opposite directions—though there are occasional mergers of such counter-rotating ones. The spiral eddies decay slowly and are sometimes annihilated by fresh upwellings. The population densities and the persistence times of the various structures were measured for different flow conditions. The resulting data show that the physical parameters characterizing the structures at the interface, scale with a mix of inner (wall shear stress and viscosity) and outer variables. Measurement of the streamwise and spanwise velocities at the free-surface were made by particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) and the surface normal velocity near the free-surface estimated by continuity. The results indicate that the upwellings and spiral eddy regions would be expected to dominate scalar transport rates at high Prandtl/Schmidt numbers. The one-dimensional energy spectra of the flow field at the free-surface compare well with direct numerical simulations and show a region with −5/3 slope at low wave numbers. This experimentally confirms a previous result regarding the two-dimensionality of turbulence near the free surface, based on numerical simulations by Pan and Banerjee [Phys. Fluids 7, 1649 (1995)].
