Properties of Intense Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves: Implications for Quasi-linear, Nonlinear, and Nonresonant Wave-Particle Interactions

Abstract:Resonant interactions between relativistic electrons and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves provide an effective loss mechanism for this important electron population in the outer radiation belt. The diffusive regime of electron scattering and loss has been well incorporated into radiation belt models within the framework of the quasi-linear diffusion theory, whereas the nonlinear regime has been mostly studied with test particle simulations. There is also a less investigated, nonresonant regime of electron scattering by EMIC waves. All three regimes should be present, depending on the EMIC waves and ambient plasma properties, but the occurrence rates of these regimes have not been previously quantified. This study provides a statistical investigation of the most important EMIC wave-packet characteristics for the diffusive, nonlinear, and nonresonant regimes of electron scattering. We utilize 3 years of Van Allen Probe observations to derive distributions of wave amplitudes, wave-packet sizes, and rates of frequency variations within individual wave-packets. We demonstrate that EMIC waves typically propagate as wave-packets with $\sim 10$ wave periods each, and that $\sim 3-10$\% of such wave-packets can reach the regime of nonlinear resonant interaction with 2 to 6 MeV electrons. We show that EMIC frequency variations within wave-packets reach $50-100$\% of the center frequency, corresponding to a significant high-frequency tail in their wave power spectrum. We explore the consequences of these wave-packet characteristics for high and low energy electron precipitation by H-band EMIC waves and for the relative importance of quasi-linear and nonlinear regimes of wave-particle interactions.

Abstract:Enhanced fluctuations driven by non-thermal features of particle-distributions are reported frequently in the variety of space plasma observations. In the rare-collisional plasmas, these amplified fluctuations scatter the particles in various direction and governs the dynamics of space plasma environments effectively. Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves usually responsible for low frequency interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations. These are natural emissions in numerous natural environments of plasmas which usually operates underneath the ion/proton cyclotron frequencies. These are identified as left hand circular polarization (L-mode) with a propagation directed towards the ambient magnetic field. Various space missions and in situ measurements unveil the perpendicular temperature anisotropies of non-thermal populations of ions/protons i.e. in heliospheric regions and solar wind. These proton temperature anisotropies excite EMIC instability which in turn the pitch angle scatters the ions and restrained the anisotropy in certain ranges. In Vasyliunas-Cairns distributed hybrid non-thermal electromagnetic proton plasma, the transverse dielectric response function (TDERF) is calculated for L-mode. It is then numerically solved in order to show the impact of non-thermal populations due to non thermal parameters α and κ on the dispersion and growth rates of EMIC instability in low and high plasma beta β regimes. Possible variation in the real oscillatory and imaginary frequencies spectrum is also analyzed with the variation in the values of other pertinent parameters i.e. temperature anisotropy τ and β. The parametric numerical analysis of the present work has relevance about that plasma phenomena of space regions where non-thermal distributed populations are prevalent.

Abstract:Most studies on low-frequency electromagnetic cyclotron waves have assumed a small wave amplitude, which ensures the reasonable application of linear and quasi-linear theories. However, the topic of large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron waves has not received much attention. Using Magnetospheric Multiscale measurements, this study observes low-frequency, left-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves with magnetic fluctuation similar to 1-2 nT in the dusk flank side of the Earth's magnetosheath. Considering the ambient magnetic field similar to 15 nT therein, the relative wave amplitude is of the order of 0.1. These large magnetic field fluctuations result in a periodic variation of the ion pitch angle. The electron pitch angle exhibits a localized distribution feature with a timescale approximating the wave period. Moreover, some electrons are trapped at a pitch angle similar to 90 degrees, and the trapping is more remarkable as strong waves arise. These two features of the electron pitch angle distribution imply that the trapping of electrons (partly) results from large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron fluctuations. Our results illustrate the important role of large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron waves on the dynamics of charged particles.

Abstract:The periodic, quasi-periodic and solitonic properties of ion-acoustic wave (IAW) with ion pressure anisotropy are examined in a magnetized nonthermal electron-ion plasma. Using CGL theory, double adiabatic equation of state for ions is assumed and inertialess electrons are considered to follow nonthermal -distribution. A damping in the system due to ions and neutral atoms collision is also included in the presence of ion pressure anisotropy. The reductive perturbation (RP) method is used to derive Kortewge-de Vries (KdV) equation in a collisionless plasma case and the damped KdV equation with collisional effects for IAW propagation in a magnetized plasma. The effects of anisotropic ion pressure and spectral index for nonthermal electrons on the formation of quasi-periodic nonlinear IAW structures in the presence of external periodic force and their changing from period doubling to multi-periods are investigated in detail.

Abstract:A natural compression/expansion in the extended plasma systems generates the temperature anisotropy in the particle distribution. Such a kinetic anisotropy acts as source of free energies to instigate the generation of a variety of instabilities. These microinstabilities in turn are extensively involved in the enhancement of electromagnetic fluctuations and scatter the particles to reach the quasistable states, with relatively lower anisotropies. One of them is the instability associated with right hand circularly polarized electromagnetic electron whistler-cyclotron mode which significantly contributes to checking/defining the perpendicular electron temperature in large scale extended space plasmas. Its transverse dielectric response function in hybrid non-thermal Vasyliunas–Cairns distributed plasmas (which simultaneously incorporates the characteristics of both type of non-thermalities, i.e., and ) is calculated by using the well-known dispersion relation presented by Gary, 1993 [1]. The obtained dielectric response function is solved numerically to procure the real and imaginary frequencies of whistler instability. The impact of important physical parameters, i.e., non-thermality parameters and for different temperature anisotropy A and plasma beta is studied on the numerically calculated real frequency and growth rate of whistler instability. Both the real and imaginary frequencies are found sensitive to the respective instability thresholds. It is also investigated that the real frequency and growth rate are remarkably supported by the hybrid non-thermality of and . Contemporary analysis is highly pertinent to comprehend the various magnetized space plasma environments where mixed non-thermal distributions are in frequently existent.

Abstract:Quasiperiodic (QP) emissions are whistler‐mode electromagnetic waves observed in the Earth's inner magnetosphere whose intensity has a nearly periodic time modulation with typical modulation periods on the order of minutes. Some events exhibit, on top of the main modulation period, an additional fine inner modulation with modulation periods on the order of seconds. We use high‐resolution multi‐component electromagnetic wave data obtained by the Van Allen Probes spacecraft to investigate one such event. Detailed wave analysis demonstrates that the fine inner modulation is due to a wave packet bouncing back and forth between the hemispheres. The presence of a density duct is important for the formation of the event, as demonstrated by the increased ratio of wave power propagating away from the equator (a tentative source region) within the duct. The main QP modulation period corresponds to the plasma number density modulation observed just outside the plasmasphere.

Abstract:Dynamics of ion-acoustic wave (IAW) are observed in a magnetized collisional four-component dusty plasma comprising cold ions, inertialess two-temperature electrons, and immobile negatively charged dust grains. Employing the reductive perturbation technique (RPT), the damped forced modified Zakharov–Kuznetsov (DFMZK) equation is derived and assuming that the conservation principle holds in the system, an approximate analytical solution of the DFMZK equation is obtained; however, the solution is valid for very small values of perturbed damping and forcing term. In that circumstance, using the bifurcation theory of the dynamical system, a qualitative study on ZK medium in the presence of damping and forcing terms has been performed. The significant effects from small damping and forcing terms are presented from a numerical standpoint. Further, utilizing the bifurcation diagram the periodic and quasi-periodic orbits of IAW in the DFMZK framework are analyzed. It is found that both the initial condition and the damping term play a significant role in forming complexity in the dynamic system. Finally, the effective role of the strength ( ) of the externally applied force perturbation is studied in detail and the existence of chaotic motion of the DFMZK equation is confirmed through time series analysis and Poincare analysis.

Abstract:The impact of quantized magnetic energy is studied on the nonlinear scattering of quantized upper hybrid waves (QUH) from low-frequency quantized: ion-cyclotron (QIC), Alfvén (QA) and lower hybrid (QLH) waves in strongly magnetized degenerate electron-ion plasmas. The governing differential equations of pump QUH, QIC, QA and QLH waves are derived in the presence of Landau quantization, symbolized by the parameter ξ. The equations are then Fourier analyzed and the phasor matching technique is applied to study the nonlinear parametric interactions. General dispersion relations are calculated and analyzed further to obtain both three-wave decay and modulational instabilities of the QIC, QA and QLH waves. The analytical results admit that the growth rate of both three-wave decay and the modulated wave packet of QA waves increases as a function of quantized magnetic energy, while the three-wave decay rate of QIC and QLH is found to decrease with the quantized B field. The present findings confirm that the quantized magnetic energy may play a vital role in enhancing the quantized Fermi and Alfvén speeds of plasma particles, hence affecting the associated growth rates of three-wave decay and modulational instabilities are modified significantly. The present findings can be important to understand the features of a quantized magnetic field in strongly magnetized quantum systems, such as neutron stars, magnetars, pulsars, etc.

Abstract:The main objective of this work is to investigate the characteristics and behavior of the ion-acoustic cnoidal waves (IACWs) in an electron–positron–ion magnetoplasma having inertial positive ions with anisotropic thermal pressure and inertialess Maxwellian positrons and electrons. We utilize the reductive perturbation technique to reduce the fluid governing equations of the present model into the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation in order to achieve this objective. We calculate the periodic solution of the KdV equation, also referred to as the cnoidal wave. We investigate the impact of various related parameters, including ion pressure anisotropy, positron concentrations, and temperature ratio, on the properties of IACWs. This study, particularly in the near-Earth magnetosheath and magnetosphere, may offer an insightful analysis of space and astrophysical plasma systems displaying ion pressure anisotropy.

Abstract:Based on the two-fluid dynamics equations describing plasma flow in a cold magnetized medium,the propagation of Alfven waves initialized by a one-period-time field-aligned current at the top of the low-latitude ionosphere has been stimulated,the reflection and coupling of Alfven wave in the low-latitude ionosphere has been analyzed.The results show the reflection coefficient is larger at the bottom end of resonator,and the shear wave is reflected distinctly(reflection coefficient(R)≥0.6).If wave frequency is approximately equal to the cavity mode frequency,compressional Alfven wave that propagates across background magnetic field lines is generated while reflection occurs,then the disturbed magnetic field has effect to the local geomagnetic pulsations.And the results prouide a scientific warranty to explain the phenomena of the geomagentic pulsations.

Abstract:Ionospheric outflow has been shown to be a dominant ion source of Earth's magnetosphere. However, most studies in the literature are about ionospheric outflow injected into the nightside magnetosphere. We still know little about ionospheric outflow injected into the dayside magnetosphere and its further energization after it enters the magnetosphere. Here, with data from Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we report direct observations of the modulation of dayside ionospheric outflow ions by ultralow frequency (ULF) waves. The observations indicate that the modulation is mass dependent, which demonstrates the possibility of using ULF waves as a mass spectrometer to identify ion species. Moreover, the measurement suggests that polarization drift may play a role in O+ modulation, which may lead to a true acceleration and even nonadiabatic behavior of O+. This interaction scenario can work throughout the whole magnetosphere and impact upon the plasma environment and dynamics.

Abstract:Ultra‐low‐frequency (ULF) waves emerge as pivotal factors in elucidating the mechanisms that drive the intricate dynamics of radiation belt electrons within the plasmasphere and plasmaspheric plumes. Utilizing THEMIS data from September 2012 to September 2017, we conducted a comprehensive statistical analysis of Pc4‐5 ULF waves within and outside the plasmaspheric plume. Our findings reveal a distinctive dawn‐dusk asymmetry in occurrence rate and wave power of poloidal mode waves in the absence of the plume, resembling the toroidal mode asymmetry observed. Poloidal mode waves exhibit a higher likelihood of formation within the plume, while the toroidal mode waves show the opposite trend, contributing to the elevated dusk‐side occurrence rate of poloidal mode waves. Moreover, both wave modes within the plume demonstrate lower peak frequencies compared to waves outside the plume. The global distribution of wave power within the plume suggests higher power at noon than on the dusk side.

Abstract:We present a three-dimensional numerical model of large-scale ionospheric electron density and temperature modulation by powerful electromagnetic waves by incorporating the transport equations and the three-dimensional ray-tracing algorithm. Based on this numerical model, the changes of ionospheric electron density and temperature at nighttime are investigated. The simulation results present (1) the ionospheric electron temperature enhancement due to the energy absorption; (2) the ionospheric electron density depletion at the reflection region and enhancement at the upper/lower region along the field line due to the thermal pressure; and (3) large-scale field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) due to the thermal self-focusing instability with transverse scale of similar to 10km. The results are quantitatively consistent with the previous theoretical predictions and experimental observations, which indicate that the thermal processes play an important role in the ionospheric electron density/temperature modulation and large-scale FAI generation.

Statistical Distribution of the Peak Frequency of ECH Waves in the Outer Magnetosphere from Magnetospheric Multiscale Satellite Observations

Abstract:Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions with frequencies between the harmonics of the electron gyrofrequencies. Their frequency properties provide clues for understanding their generation and are keys to evaluating their scattering efficiency. Based on Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations, we explored the statistical frequency properties of first-harmonic band ECH waves in the outer magnetosphere. The frequencies at the peak power of ECH waves are found to be day-night and dawn-dusk asymmetries, with higher values in the regions from dawn to post-noon, and these asymmetries are more evident during weaker geomagnetic activity. Furthermore, the frequencies at the peak power of ECH waves decrease gradually with increasing |MLAT| and are positively correlated with their amplitudes at each magnetic local time or |MLAT|. Information on the frequency properties of ECH waves presented in this study can be crucial for future modeling of their contributions to magnetospheric electron dynamics. Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions with frequencies between the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency. They act as major contributors to the generation of diffuse auroras in the outer magnetosphere via the pitch angle scattering of plasma sheet electrons into the atmosphere. Theoretically, such electron scattering can be quantified by quasilinear scattering rates, which are strongly controlled by the wave frequency. However, the current knowledge of their frequency properties is lacking. In this study, we statistically analyze the frequency properties of the first-harmonic band ECH waves in the outer magnetosphere using Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations. The statistical results show that the wave frequency at peak power highly depends on the magnetic local time (MLT), magnetic latitude (MLAT), and wave amplitude. These new findings are of great importance in advancing our knowledge of ECH wave generation and in modeling ECH-induced plasma sheet electron dynamics in the outer magnetosphere. ECH waves have clear frequency distribution patterns depending on the MLT, MLAT, and wave amplitude The frequency at the peak power is larger from dawn to post-noon, maximized near the magnetic equator, and decreases with increasing |MLAT| The frequency at the peak power increases with the amplitude for each specific magnetic local time or |MLAT|

Abstract:Multistability and dynamical properties of quantum ion-acoustic (QIA) waves are examined in a quantum plasma consisting of warm ions and inertialess electrons. Using phase plane analysis, QIA periodic, a pair of solitonic and superperiodic wave solutions are reported. The physical parameters viz., ion–electron Fermi temperature ratio (ρ), quantum parameter (H), travelling wave velocity (V) and β affect significantly on these wave solutions. Considering an external periodic perturbation various types of QIA coexisting hidden attractors (periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic attractors) are observed in parametric space through phase plots, time series plots and Lyapunov exponents. Coexisting QIA hidden attractors are reported for the first time in electron–ion quantum plasmas.

Based on the high-quality measurements of space plasma by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellites, we observe that both the wave electromagnetic field vectors and the disturbed ion velocity distribution rotate around the background magnetic field. Moreover, we find that the gyrophase angle difference between the fluctuations in the ion velocity distribution functions and the wave electric field vectors are always in the range of (0, 90) degrees, clearly suggesting the ongoing energy conversion from wave fields to particles. By invoking plasma kinetic theory, we find that the field-particle correlation for the dissipative ion cyclotron waves in the theoretical model matches well with our observations. Furthermore, all the wave electric field vectors (Ewave), the ion current (Ji) and the energy transfer rate (Ji &#183;Ewave) exhibit quasi-periodic oscillations, and the frequency of Ji &#183;Ewave is about twice the frequency of Ewave and Ji, consistent with plasma kinetic theory. Therefore, our combined analysis of MMS observations and kinetic theory provides direct, thorough, and comprehensive evidence for ICW dissipation in space plasmas.</p>
