Abstract:Recent study has demonstrated that electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves can be excited by a low energy electron beam. Such waves propagate at moderately oblique wave normal angles (~70). The potential effects of beam-driven ECH waves on electron dynamics in Earth's plasma sheet is not known. Using two-dimensional Darwin particle-in-cell simulations with initial electron distributions that represent typical plasma conditions in the plasma sheet, we explore the excitation and saturation of such beam-driven ECH waves. Both ECH and electron acoustic waves are excited in the simulation and propagate at oblique wave normal angles. Compared with the electron acoustic waves, ECH waves grow much faster and have more intense saturation amplitudes. Cold, stationary electrons are first accelerated by ECH waves through cyclotron resonance and then accelerated in the parallel direction by both the ECH and electron acoustic waves through Landau resonance. Beam electrons, on the other hand, are decelerated in the parallel direction and scattered to larger pitch angles. The relaxation of the electron beam and the continuous heating of the cold electrons contribute to ECH wave saturation and suppress the excitation of electron acoustic waves. When the ratio of plasma to electron cyclotron frequency wpe/wce increases, the ECH wave amplitude increases while the electron acoustic wave amplitude decreases. Our work reveals the importance of ECH and electron acoustic waves in reshaping sub-thermal electron distributions and improves our understanding on the potential effects of wave-particle interactions in trapping ionospheric electron outflows and forming anisotropic (field-aligned) electron distributions in the plasma sheet.

Abstract:Electrostatic solitary (ES) structures have been frequently observed in the solar wind, Earth’s and other planetary magnetosphere and are the most widely theoretically studied waves in literature. However, there are very few studies in which simulations and theoretical studies have been performed simultaneously. In this paper, we perform 1-D electrostatic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations of electrostatic solitary (ES) waves in a plasma which consists of immobile ions, and cold, beam and hot electrons. It is found that for a small value of electron beam velocity, ES structures are formed due to the steepening of initially quasi monochromatic electron acoustic (EA) waves. We interpret these ES structures as electron acoustic solitary (EAS) structures, which agree with the rarefactive (negative electrostatic potential) electron acoustic solitary structures obtained theoretically as a solution of the Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation. We found that polarity of solitary structures depends on the drift velocity of electron beam and formation of electric field spikes are consistent with the ES waves observations from Earth’s magnetosphere.

Abstract:A one-dimensional (1D) electrostatic particle-in-cell simulation was performed to study wave excitation processes due to a tenuous electron beam in a plasma system, which is composed of hot and cold electron components. In this case, three types of electrostatic waves are excited, namely, Langmuir waves, electron-acoustic waves, and beam-driven waves. The beam-driven waves have a broad frequency spectrum, which extends from (0.1–0.2)ωpe (ωpe is the electron plasma frequency) to (1.5–2.5)ωpe, with phase speeds close to the speed of the electron beam. The interactions among these waves are investigated for different values of density, temperature, and speed of the electron beam, etc. One special case is that when the density of the electron beam is sufficiently high, compressive solitary waves with bipolar structure of the electric field are generated. The generation mechanism of these solitons is mainly due to the trapping of a fraction of the beam electrons by the potential well of the enhanced beam-driven waves, as shown by the holes that are formed in phase-space plots. The relevance of these excited electrostatic waves to the intense broadband electrostatic noise observed in the Earth’s auroral region is also discussed.

Abstract:In the upper atmosphere (ionosphere), plasma with two electron populations is very common. The cold electrons ( T e ∼ 1 eV) usually originate in the ionosphere, while the hot electrons ( T e ∼ 100 eV) come from the magnetosphere. In addition to these two electron populations, there may be a beam of electrons streaming along the magnetic field lines. These electrons are responsible for exciting various electrostatic wave modes. In this article, we provide a systematic insight in the evolution of the system, based on the beam energy. With an increase in beam velocity, the beam temporarily recovers a portion of its initial energy as well as a higher saturation energy. The wave energy is lost significantly before saturation and after linear growth at a relatively modest beam velocity. In addition, the low beam velocity generates BGK electron holes in the phase space, which are missing at higher beam velocities. We also present the analysis of the condition of sustained electron holes in the phase space.

Emission of Electrostatic Whistler Waves Associated with Weak Electron‐Beam Excited Langmuir Waves: the 2‐D Particle‐in‐Cell Simulations

Abstract:In this paper, we perform two‐dimensional (2‐D) electrostatic particle‐in‐cell simulations to investigate the emission of electrostatic whistler waves (EWWs) associated with the weak electron‐beam excited Langmuir waves. Both the linear theory and simulations have shown that quasi‐parallel Langmuir waves can be generated during the linear stage of the beam‐plasma interaction process. The 2‐D particle‐in‐cell simulations further demonstrated that when the background magnetic field is strong (Ωe/ωpe > 1, where Ωe and ωpe are electron gyrofrequency and electron plasma frequency, respectively), EWWs will be generated in weak electron‐beam excited Langmuir waves during the nonlinear stage of wave growth, leading to the increment of perpendicular electric field. When the background magnetic field is weak (Ωe/ωpe < 1), EWWs cannot be generated during the nonlinear stage and the perpendicular electric field has no obvious nonlinear increment. In addition, the influences of the electron beam density and the electron beam velocity on the generation of EWWs are also analyzed in this paper. The simulation results may also account for observations in the Earth's Auroral region.

Abstract:The spatio temporal evolution of electromagnetic (Weibel-type) and electrostatic (two-stream) instabilities of electron beams propagating in collisionless plasmas were investigated by using electromagnetic relativistic particle-in-cell simulations. The onset and nonlinear saturation of Weibel instability, the emergence of beams and magnetic field reconnection were discussed. The excitation of longitudinal electric field plays an important role for the stable propagation of electron beams, which can be destructed by the transverse modulation due to two-stream instability. These results may be important for understanding the static magnetic field generation and fast electron propagation in fast ignition physics.

Abstract:This study examines the nonlinear dynamics of high-frequency electron–acoustic waves (EAWs) in a collisionless, unmagnetized plasma consisting of several components, including inertial cold electrons, an inertial electron beam, and inertialess Cairns-distributed hot electrons in addition to background stationary ions. We use a nonlinear pseudopotential (Sagadeev potential) method to investigate the possibility of stationary-profile electron–acoustic solitons (EASs). In this study, the nonthermal parameter, the temperature ratio between hot and cold electrons, density ratios, and electron beam parameters are carefully examined to see how they change the features of EASs. As the nonthermality of hot electrons rises, the beam speed decreases, the density ratio of the beam to the cold electron increases, and the existence domain for EASs gets bigger. The current theoretical model shows a link between the wideband noise seen in Geotail satellites and the plasma sheet boundary layer in Earth's magnetosphere.

Ion and Electron Dynamics in the Presence of Mirror, Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron, and Whistler Waves

Abstract:Abstract The wave–particle cyclotron interaction is a basic process in collisionless plasmas, which results in the redistribution of the energy between plasma waves and charged particles. This paper presents an event observation in order to explore the dynamics of charged particles and plasma waves, i.e., mirror, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC), and whistler waves, in the Earth’s magnetosheath. It shows that when ions have a high-speed streaming velocity parallel to the magnetic field, EMIC waves arise. We also find that the frequency distribution of nearly parallel and nearly antiparallel whistler waves depends on the parallel streaming velocity of electrons. Based on the linear kinetic theory and the fitting plasma parameters, we show that the differential flows among ion components can enhance the ion cyclotron anisotropy instability that is even stronger than the mirror instability. The differential electron flows induce an asymmetry of the growth rate of counter-propagating whistler waves in the electron cyclotron anisotropy instability. On the other hand, the low-frequency EMIC and transverse electromagnetic waves modulate the ion pitch angle distribution. Moreover, when charged particles flow across the magnetic field, both low- and high-energy electrons are deeply trapped by mirror waves. These results illustrate new features of the observed plasma waves and charged particles in the Earth’s magnetosheath, which could inspire improvement of the wave models therein.

Abstract:The nonlinear self-interaction of finite amplitude energetic particle induced geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) is investigated using the nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that both zero frequency zonal flow (ZFZF) and second harmonic can be driven by finite amplitude EGAMs, with energetic particles (EPs) playing a dominant role in the nonlinear couplings through finite orbit width effects. For ZFZF, the effects of EPs on EGAM nonlinear self-coupling dominate those of the thermal plasmas which are also present, while the second harmonic generation is only possible via finite amplitude coupling through EPs. Our findings may improve the understanding of stabilizing zonal modes and consequently drift wave turbulence.
Formation of electron beam-like components in low-Mach-number quasi-perpendicular shock: Particle-in-cell simulation

Abstract:Collisionless shocks with low Alfvenic Mach numbers are expected to accelerate electrons, but the underlying physics are still unsolved. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation of low-Mach-number quasi-perpendicular shock in low-beta is performed to study the physics of formation of beam-like components with respect to background magnetic fields. The incoming electrons can be trapped and scattered to have velocities along the shock surface by the electrostatic wave in the foot region owing to the free energy in the relative drift between shock reflected ions and upstream electrons. Then fractional electrons can be reflected by the mirror force at the shock overshoot when escaping from the loss cone. The reflection by the mirror force makes the electrons gain quasi-parallel velocities, and the electrons are accelerated in the quasi-parallel direction during trapping in the immediate downstream, forming a beam-like component with respect to magnetic fields. Our results shown in this paper explain the physics of beam formation and could be helpful for accounting for type II radio bursts. (c) 2023 Author(s). Abstract:In J-TEXT tokamak,fast electron bremsstrahlung diagnostic with 9 chords equipped with multi-channel analyzer enables detailed studies of the generation and transport of fast electrons.The spatial profiles and energy spectrum of the fast electrons have been measured in two ECCD cases with either on-axis or off-axis injection,and the profiles processed by Abel-inversion are consistent with the calculated power deposition locations.Moreover,it is observed that the energy of fast electrons increases rapidly after turning off the ECCD,which may be attributed to the acceleration by the recovered loop voltage at low electron density.

Abstract:By performing one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the nonlinear effects of electronacoustic（EA） waves are investigated in a multispecies plasma, whose constituents are hot electrons, cold electrons, and beam electrons with immobile neutralized positive ions. Numerical analyses have identified that EA waves with a sufficiently large amplitude tend to trap cold electrons. Because EA waves are dispersive, where the wave modes with different wavenumbers have different phase velocities, the trapping may lead to the mixing of cold electrons. The cold electrons finally get thermalized or heated. The investigation also shows that the excited EA waves give rise to a broad range of wave frequencies, which may be helpful for understanding the broadband-electrostatic-noise spectrum in the Earth’s auroral region.
Electron beam-plasma interaction and electron-acoustic solitary waves in a plasma with suprathermal electrons

Abstract:Suprathermal electrons and inertial drifting electrons, so called electron beam, are crucial to the nonlinear dynamics of electrostatic solitary waves observed in several astrophysical plasmas. In this paper, the propagation of electron-acoustic solitary waves (EAWs) is investigated in a collisionless, unmagnetized plasma consisting of cool inertial background electrons, hot suprathermal electrons (modeled by a κ-type distribution), and stationary ions. The plasma is penetrated by a cool electron beam component. A linear dispersion relation is derived to describe small-amplitude wave structures that shows a weak dependence of the phase speed on the electron beam velocity and density. A (Sagdeev-type) pseudopotential approach is employed to obtain the existence domain of large-amplitude solitary waves, and investigate how their nonlinear structures depend on the kinematic and physical properties of the electron beam and the suprathermality (described by κ) of the hot electrons. The results indicate that the electron beam can largely alter the EAWs, but can only produce negative polarity solitary waves in this model. While the electron beam co-propagates with the solitary waves, the soliton existence domain (Mach number range) becomes narrower (nearly down to nil) with increasing the beam speed and the beam-to-hot electron temperature ratio, and decreasing the beam-to-cool electron density ratio in high suprathermality (low κ). It is found that the electric potential amplitude largely declines with increasing the beam speed and the beam-to-cool electron density ratio for co-propagating solitary waves, but is slightly decreased by raising the beam-to-hot electron temperature ratio.

Particle Simulation Study on the Transport of Laser-Accelerated Proton Beams in High-Density Plasmas

Abstract:Ion beam has important applications in inertial confinement fusion and high energy density physics. In this work, we used EPOCH (Extendable PIC Open Collaboration) to simulate the transport of laser-accelerated proton beams in high density plasmas with different ion charge numbers. Especially in the plasma with a high ion charge number, where the plasma collision frequency approaches electron oscillation frequency, the beam protons are strongly decelerated by the electric field induced by plasma return current. The energy deposition is further enhanced as the beam travel distance increases due to beam density selfsteeping, which is also confirmed by three-dimensional simulation. Interestingly, in the transverse direction, we observed that proton beams evolved into multiple current filaments due to current filamentation instability (CFI). Following that, we found through two-dimensional transverse simulations that Coulomb collisions can accelerate the merging process of current filaments. We preliminarily attribute this to Coulomb collisions causing plasma heating, thereby accelerating the nonlinear process of CFI.
Electrostatic and whistler instabilities excited by an electron beam

Abstract:The electron beam-plasma system is ubiquitous in the space plasma environment. Here, using a Darwin particle-in-cell method, the excitation of electrostatic and whistler instabilities by a gyrating electron beam is studied in support of recent laboratory experiments. It is assumed that the total plasma frequency $\omega_{pe}$ is larger than the electron cyclotron frequency $\Omega_e$. The fast-growing electrostatic beam-mode waves saturate in a few plasma oscillations by slowing down and relaxing the electron beam parallel to the background magnetic field. Upon their saturation, the finite amplitude electrostatic beam-mode waves can resonate with the tail of the background thermal electrons and accelerate them to the beam parallel velocity. The slower-growing whistler waves are excited in primarily two resonance modes: (a) through Landau resonance due to the inverted slope of the beam electrons in the parallel velocity; (b) through cyclotron resonance by scattering electrons to both lower pitch angles and smaller energies. It is demonstrated that, for a field-aligned beam, the whistler instability can be suppressed by the electrostatic instability due to a faster energy transfer rate between beam electrons and the electrostatic waves. Such a competition of growth between whistler and electrostatic waves depends on the ratio of $\omega_{pe}/\Omega_e$. In terms of wave propagation, beam-generated electrostatic waves are confined to the beam region whereas beam-generated whistler waves transport energy away from the beam.

Properties of Intense Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves: Implications for Quasi-linear, Nonlinear, and Nonresonant Wave-Particle Interactions

Abstract:Resonant interactions between relativistic electrons and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves provide an effective loss mechanism for this important electron population in the outer radiation belt. The diffusive regime of electron scattering and loss has been well incorporated into radiation belt models within the framework of the quasi-linear diffusion theory, whereas the nonlinear regime has been mostly studied with test particle simulations. There is also a less investigated, nonresonant regime of electron scattering by EMIC waves. All three regimes should be present, depending on the EMIC waves and ambient plasma properties, but the occurrence rates of these regimes have not been previously quantified. This study provides a statistical investigation of the most important EMIC wave-packet characteristics for the diffusive, nonlinear, and nonresonant regimes of electron scattering. We utilize 3 years of Van Allen Probe observations to derive distributions of wave amplitudes, wave-packet sizes, and rates of frequency variations within individual wave-packets. We demonstrate that EMIC waves typically propagate as wave-packets with $\sim 10$ wave periods each, and that $\sim 3-10$\% of such wave-packets can reach the regime of nonlinear resonant interaction with 2 to 6 MeV electrons. We show that EMIC frequency variations within wave-packets reach $50-100$\% of the center frequency, corresponding to a significant high-frequency tail in their wave power spectrum. We explore the consequences of these wave-packet characteristics for high and low energy electron precipitation by H-band EMIC waves and for the relative importance of quasi-linear and nonlinear regimes of wave-particle interactions.

Abstract:Chorus waves are widely investigated in space physics due to their significant role played in the radiation belts. Multiple structures of chorus frequency chirping elements, such as rising-tone structure, falling-tone structure, and hook-like structure, are observed in both space plasmas and the ground simulation experiments. In this paper, the numerical simulation on the generation of descending elements of chorus waves with parameters of a launching device, Dipole Research EXperiment, is conducted by a hybrid code named DAWN. The descending element of chorus waves is self-consistently generated without additional requirements except for a hot electron component as the free energy source. A case of ascending element under the magnetosphere parameters is also carried out to verify our simulations. Phase space distributions of electrons for the two chirping structures are analyzed, and the simulation results are consistent with previous theoretical predictions. It is obtained from the simulation results that the ascending element of chorus is observed together with an electron phase space hole (a depleted distribution function), while the descending elemet is observed together with an electron phase space clump.
