Abstract:Using the high‐time‐resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, precursor waves upstream of foreshock transient (FT) shocks are statistically investigated using the four‐spacecraft timing method. The wave frequencies and wave vectors determined in the plasma rest frame (PRF) are shown to follow the cold plasma dispersion relation for whistler waves. Combining with the feature of the right‐hand polarization in the PRF, the precursors are identified as whistler‐mode waves around the lower hybrid frequency. The occurrence of whistler precursors is independent of the Alfvén Mach number and the FT shock normal angle. More importantly, all the whistler precursors have group velocities pointing upstream in the shock frame, suggesting the dispersive radiation to be a possible generation mechanism. The study improves the understanding of not only the whistler precursors but also the overall FT shock dynamics.

Abstract:Whistler mode wave is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves are a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyse data with the high time resolution from the multi-scale magnetospheric spacecraft in the weak magnetic environment (i.e., foreshock) enabling a relatively long gyro-period of whistler mode wave. Moreover, we develop a novel approach to separate the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions from their background, and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between electrons and electromagnetic fields at high frequency, providing the resultant growth rate of unstable whistler waves. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, the ion distributions are found to also play crucial roles in determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate can significantly advance the understandings of the wave evolution and the energy conversion with particles.

Electron resonant interaction with whistler-mode waves around the Earth's bow shock I: the probabilistic approach

Abstract:Adiabatic heating of solar wind electrons at the Earth's bow shock and its foreshock region produces transversely anisotropic hot electrons that, in turn, generate intense high-frequency whistler-mode waves. These waves are often detected by spacecraft as narrow-band, electromagnetic emissions in the frequency range of [0.1,0.5] of the local electron gyrofrequency. Resonant interactions between these waves and electrons may cause electron acceleration and pitch-angle scattering, which can be important for creating the electron population that seeds shock drift acceleration. The high intensity and coherence of the observed whistler-mode waves prohibit the use of quasi-linear theory to describe their interaction with electrons. In this paper, we aim to develop a new theoretical approach to describe this interaction, that incorporates nonlinear resonant interactions, gradients of the background density and magnetic field, and the fine structure of the waveforms that usually consist of short, intense wave-packet trains. This is the first of two accompanying papers. It outlines a probabilistic approach to describe the wave-particle interaction. We demonstrate how the wave-packet size affects electron nonlinear resonance at the bow shock and foreshock regions, and how to evaluate electron distribution dynamics in such a system that is frequented by short, intense whistler-mode wave-packets. In the second paper, this probabilistic approach is merged with a mapping technique, which allows us to model systems containing short and long wave-packets.

Abstract:Abstract The whistler-mode wave extending from the fast-magnetosonic wave branch is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory, and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves is a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyze observational data with a high time resolution from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft in front of the terrestrial bow shock (e.g., foreshock). We develop a novel approach to extract the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions (δf e( V )) from their background (f e0( V )), and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between fluctuating electrons (δf e( V )) and wavelike electromagnetic fields (δ B , δ E ) at an unprecedentedly high frequency (>1 Hz) for investigating wave–particle interactions. We provide that the unstable whistler wave grows rapidly over a timescale that is much shorter than the proton gyro-period. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, we find the ion distributions consisting of the solar wind ion flows and the ion beams reflected from the shock play crucial roles in providing the free energy and determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate and the characterization of wave–particle interactions for the instability driver can significantly advance the understandings of wave evolution and energy conversion between multisource multispecies particles and wave electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:We statistically investigate high-frequency whistler waves (with frequencies higher than ∼10% of the local electron cyclotron frequency) at Earth's bow shock using magnetospheric multi-scale (MMS) spacecraft observations. We focus specifically on the wave power within the shock transition layer, where we expect electron acceleration via stochastic shock drift acceleration (SSDA) to occur associated with efficient pitch-angle scattering by whistler waves. We find that the wave power is positively correlated with both the Alfvén Mach number in the normal incidence frame MA and in the de Hoffmann–Teller frame MA/cos θBn. The empirical relation with MA/cos θBn is compared with the theory of SSDA that predicts a threshold wave power proportional to (MA/cos θBn)−2. The result suggests that the wave power exceeds the theoretical threshold for MA/cos θBn≳30–60, beyond which efficient electron acceleration is expected. This aligns very well with previous statistical analysis of electron acceleration at Earth's bow shock [Oka et al., Geophys. Res. Lett. 33, 5–6 (2006)]. Therefore, we consider that this study provides further support for SSDA as the mechanism of electron acceleration at Earth's bow shock. At higher-Mach-number astrophysical shocks, SSDA will be able to inject electrons into the diffusive shock acceleration process for subsequent acceleration to cosmic-ray energies.

Abstract:Whistler-mode waves have been extensively observed and investigated in terrestrial space. In this study, we present the dynamic response of whistler-mode waves to different solar wind conditions in the dayside terrestrial space based on Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) data. Statistical results show that the occurrence rate, amplitudes, and corresponding electron temperature anisotropy of whistler-mode waves increase with P sw in the dayside terrestrial space, which is attributed to the compression of magnetic fields in these magnetosheath and outer magnetosphere. Furthermore, whistler-mode waves under the southward interplanetary magnetic fields (IMFs) show a higher occurrence rate than that under the northward IMFs, mostly corresponding to T e⊥ /T e∥ > 1, and have a higher occurrence rate during quasi-radial IMFs. These results present that whistler-mode waves in these magnetosheath and outer magnetosphere are also modulated by the solar wind as clearly as the inner magnetosphere. This work advanced our understanding in the solar–terrestrial interaction.

Abstract:Whistler waves are intermittently present in the solar wind, while their origin and effects are not entirely understood. We present a statistical analysis of magnetic field fluctuations in the whistler frequency range (above 16 Hz) based on about 801,500 magnetic field spectra measured over three years aboard ARTEMIS spacecraft in the pristine solar wind. About 13,700 spectra (30 hours in total) with intense magnetic field fluctuations satisfy the interpretation in terms of quasi-parallel whistler waves. We provide estimates of the whistler wave occurrence probability, amplitudes, frequencies and bandwidths. The occurrence probability of whistler waves is shown to strongly depend on the electron temperature anisotropy. The whistler waves amplitudes are in the range from about 0.01 to 0.1 nT and typically below 0.02 of the background magnetic field. The frequencies of the whistler waves are shown to be below an upper bound that is dependent on $\beta_{e}$. The correlations established between the whistler wave properties and local macroscopic plasma parameters suggest that the observed whistler waves can be generated in local plasmas by the whistler heat flux instability. The whistler wave amplitudes are typically small, which questions the hypothesis that quasi-parallel whistler waves are capable to regulate the electron heat flux in the solar wind. We show that the observed whistler waves have sufficiently wide bandwidths and small amplitudes, so that effects of the whistler waves on electrons can be addressed in the frame of the quasi-linear theory.

Abstract:The existence of shocklets, a kind of solitary structure, has been demonstrated in the Earth's foreshock regions for decades. Their formation and evolution are believed to be controlled by ions. However, the detailed behavior of ions at them has not been well investigated observationally yet. Here, we investigate a shocklet observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the Earth's foreshock. Analysis of ion observations reveals that the solar wind (SW) ions are bunched in gyrophase space when interacting with the whistler precursor of the shocklet, suggesting the occurrence of cyclotron resonance between them. A more detailed examination suggests that the cyclotron resonance induces a net energy flow from the whistler precursor to the SW ions. Thus, the observations presented here indicate that the cyclotron resonance between shocklet whistler precursors and the SW ions could provide a mechanism for shocklet dissipation and SW ion energization.

Abstract:Whistler‐mode waves are commonly observed within the lunar environment, while their variations during Interplanetary (IP) shocks are not fully understood yet. In this paper, we analyze two IP shock events observed by Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moons Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) satellites while the Moon was exposed to the solar wind. In the first event, ARTEMIS detected whistler‐mode wave intensification, accompanied by sharply increased hot electron flux and anisotropy across the shock ramp. The potential reflection or backscattering of electrons by the lunar crustal magnetic field is found to be favorable for whistler‐mode wave intensification. In the second event, a magnetic field line rotation around the shock region was observed and correlated with whistler‐mode wave intensification. The wave growth rates calculated using linear theory agree well with the observed wave spectra. Our study highlights the significance of magnetic field variations and anisotropic hot electron distributions in generating whistler‐mode waves in the lunar plasma environment following IP shock arrivals.

Abstract:Based on observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, this study presents an analysis of a short large‐amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS) event with simultaneous occurrence of low‐ and high‐frequency magnetosonic whistler waves. It was found that low‐frequency magnetosonic whistler waves around the lower‐hybrid frequency emerge in the presence of solar wind ions and local low‐energy ions in the trailing region of SLAMS. Additionally, counter‐propagating whistler waves (the high‐frequency branch of the magnetosonic whistler wave) are observed within SLAMS, coinciding with a perpendicular temperature anisotropy in the electron population. Instability analyses demonstrate that these low‐frequency waves are induced by the two‐stream instability associated with the cross‐field relative velocity between low‐energy ions and electrons, while whistler waves are locally generated by the whistler anisotropy instability. Our results shed light on the impact of SLAMS on particle and wave dynamics in the terrestrial foreshock.

Abstract:Upstream propagating waves are observed to correlate with the reflected ions in the foot of a high Mach number quasi‐perpendicular collisionless shock. The respective wavefronts show time varying amplitude matching the variation of the reflected ions and the shock reformation cycles. We interpret this process in terms of the fast two‐stream instability and investigate the results of the PIC simulation as compared with the prediction of the linear analysis. Evidence for upstream propagating whistler waves supported by two‐stream instability is continuously growing, see for example, recent surveys based on MMS in‐situ observations of the Earth bow‐shock. The present study suggests that upstream propagating waves are consistent with and in particular supported by the mechanism of fast two‐stream instability developing in the upstream region of the shock foot.

Abstract:In the Earth's magnetosheath (MSH), several processes contribute to energy dissipation and plasma heating, one of which is wave-particle interactions between whistler waves and electrons. However, the overall impact of whistlers on electron dynamics in the MSH remains to be quantified. We analyze 18 hours of burst-mode measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, including data from the unbiased magnetosheath campaign during February-March 2023. We present a statistical study of 34,409 whistler waves found using automatic detection. We compare wave occurrence in the different MSH geometries and find three times higher occurrence in the quasi-perpendicular MSH compared to the quasi-parallel case. We also study the wave properties and find that the waves propagate quasi-parallel to the background magnetic field, have a median frequency of 0.2 times the electron cyclotron frequency, median amplitude of 0.03-0.06 nT (30-60 pT), and median duration of a few tens of wave periods. The whistler waves are preferentially observed in local magnetic dips and density peaks and are not associated with an increased temperature anisotropy. Also, almost no whistlers are observed in regions with parallel electron plasma beta lower than 0.1. Importantly, when estimating pitch-angle diffusion times we find that the whistler waves cause significant pitch-angle scattering of electrons in the MSH.

Abstract:Wave activities in tailward flows have been explored in the distant magnetotail at ~54 RE, where the coupling between whistler mode waves and ion‐scale waves was observed. The whistler mode waves periodically appeared at each cycle of the ion‐scale waves, and the electron distribution functions associated with the whistler mode waves showed enhancement in the direction parallel to background magnetic field. Wave analyses show that the field‐aligned electron components act as the energy source of the whistler mode waves. The ion‐scale waves are generated by the interaction of the hot ion beam with background ions. A likely candidate of the ion‐scale wave is the kinetic Alfven wave, which can generate the enhanced field‐aligned electron populations by the parallel electric field.
