Abstract:Observations show that there were warming trends in the stratospheric Arctic in early winter (November-December) since the late 1970s. To test whether the warming trends result from rising Sea Surface Temperature (SST), an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) is forced using observed global time-varying SST and sea ice concentrations. Ensemble simulations demonstrate that there are indeed statistically significant warming trends in the stratospheric Arctic under the SST forcing. The tropospheric Arctic also shows relatively weak warming trends, with lower statistical significance. Application of empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis to simulated geopotential heights reveals that the leading EOF modes of geopotential heights has a spatial pattern similar to that of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) or the Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM). In the stratosphere, the time series of the principal component shows a significant negative trend. Corresponding to the negative AO trend, wave activity at middle and high latitudes is increased, and zonal-mean zonal winds are decelerated, suggesting that the warming trends in the stratospheric Arctic are due to enhanced adiabatic heating in the Arctic stratosphere because of increased wave activity. In addition, simulations also show relatively weak warming trends in the Arctic lower stratosphere in late winter (February-March). Since increases in polar stratospheric temperatures tend to slow down heterogeneous ozone chemical reactions, the stratospheric Arctic warming will benefit ozone recovery.
Whole Atmosphere Coupling during the September 2019 Antarctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming

Abstract:<p>A sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is a large-scale meteorological phenomenon, which is most commonly observed in the Arctic region during winter months. In September 2019, a rare SSW occurred in the Antarctic region, providing a unique opportunity to study its impact on the middle and upper atmosphere. Geopotential height measurements by the Microwave Limb Sounder aboard NASA's Aura satellite reveal a burst of westward-propagating quasi-6-day wave (Q6DW) with zonal wavenumber 1 in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere following the SSW. At this time, ionospheric data from ESA's Swarm satellite constellation mission show prominent 6-day variations in the daytime equatorial electrojet intensity and low-latitude plasma densities. The whole atmosphere model GAIA reproduces salient features of the middle and upper atmosphere response to the SSW. GAIA results suggest that the observed ionospheric 6-day variations are not directly driven by the Q6DW but driven indirectly through tidal modulations by the Q6DW. An analysis of global total electron content data reveals signatures of secondary waves arising from the nonlinear interaction between the Q6DW and tides.</p>
Characteristics of the polar vortex and the AO index in the upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere in Arctic winter II

Abstract:Purpose of this research is to clarify relationship between solar activity and disturbance in the middle atmosphere during Arctic winter. In this research we consider stratospheric sudden warming (SSW), which is a typical phenomenon in Arctic winter, as disturbance in the middle atmosphere including the mesosphere. Previous research [ex. Labitzke, 2005] reported effect of 11-year solar cycle on thermal structure only in the Stratosphere. Traditional classification of SSW is not suited for quantitative comparison with other indices. Therefore we are exploring new indices which display condition of disturbance in the mesosphere. In this presentation, we calculate AO index in the altitude range from 1000 hPa to 0.1 hPa (65km alt) in 1999/2000 –2007/2008 winters. AO index also represents well the degree of disturbance in the middle atmosphere. We also use 2D vortex moment diagnostics (Z10 method) [Seviour et al., 2013] to check condition of the polar vortex at 10 hPa and 0.316 hPa. The results of these analysis is summarized as follows: > The peak altitude of AO index is about 0.5 hPa. > Positivity/negativity of AO index is almost coincident at 100 hPa –0.1 hPa. > High negative value and negative AO index in all altitude are not necessarily required in Major Warmings. > Wave 1 and 2 configuration are observed at 10 and 0.316 hPa in Major Warmings and comparable level events. Strong wave 1 is exists especially in 10 hPa. > Wave 1 and 2 configuration are observed at 0.316 hPa in minor Warmings. Climatology and Anomaly of the Quasi‐Two‐Day Wave Behaviors During 2003–2018 Austral Summer Periods

Abstract:The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry satellite instrument has been measuring the mesospheric global temperature since February 2002, providing the longest continuous data set to statistically study the climatology and anomaly of the quasi-two-day waves (QTDWs), including the westward zonal wave number 2 (W2), 3 (W3), and 4 (W4) modes. It is found that the W2 QTDW generally peaks earliest, followed by the W3 mode with the W4 QTDW being amplified lastly. This temporal pattern is always disordered during the sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) periods. The temperature oscillations of the QTDW usually peak at nearly the same period at different altitudes and different latitudes for a certain case but would be different from year to year. The statistical results show that the periods of the W2 QTDWs are more frequently observed to be at 45-48 hr and the periods of the W3 mode are mostly confined between 45 and 52 hr. Nevertheless, the oscillations of the W4 QTDW peak more dispersedly between 41 and 56 hr. The W3 QTDW is usually the strongest among the three modes, whereas it is sometimes equal to or even weaker than W2 and W4 QTDWs, especially during SSW periods. Besides, we found that the vertical distribution of the W3 QTDW splits into a bimodal structure during the SSW periods of 2006 and 2011. And the solar cycle trend of the QTDWs is frequently disturbed by a 2- to 5-year variability, which seems to be a common feature for all the QTDW modes.

Abstract:The Arctic stratosphere winter season of 2021–2022 was characterized by a stable, cold stratospheric polar vortex with a volume of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) close to the maximum values since 1980, before the beginning of minor sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events in the late February and early March and major SSW on 20 March. Analysis of dynamical processes of the Arctic stratosphere using reanalysis data indicates that the main reasons for the strengthening of the stratospheric polar vortex in January–February are the minimum propagation of planetary wave activity from the troposphere to the stratosphere over the past 40 years and its reflection in the upper stratosphere–lower mesosphere in the second half of January. The first minor SSW was limited to the upper polar stratosphere, whereas the second one propagated to the middle and lower stratosphere and led to the disappearance of the PSC, which prevented significant ozone depletion. Both minor and major SSW events led to a weakening of the residual meridional circulation in the upper Arctic stratosphere and its intensification in the middle and lower stratosphere, which contributed to additional warming of the subpolar region and weakening of the polar vortex.

Abstract:Abstract Using the ERA5 reanalysis, sea surface temperature and sea ice observations, and the real-time multivariate Madden–Julian index, this study explores a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) in January 2021, its favorable conditions, and the near surface impact. Wavenumbers 1 and 2 alternately contributed to the total eddy heat flux from mid-December 2020 to late January 2021, and the wavenumber 2 during the onset period nearly split the stratospheric polar vortex. In mid-December 2020 and during the 2021 New Year period (1–5 January 2021), a blocking developed over the Urals, which enhanced the local ridge and the climatological wavenumber 2. Composite results confirm that the Arctic sea ice loss in autumn and La Niña favor the deepening of the high latitude North Pacific low and the increase of the Urals height ridge, which together enhance the planetary waves and hence disturb the stratospheric polar vortex. However, the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) in the tropics was dormant in mid-to-late December 2020 and early January 2021, and the well-established statistical relationship between the MJO convection over the western Pacific and the SSW is not applicable to this special case. The cold air outbreak in China during the 2021 New Year period before the January 2021 SSW onset is not explained by the SSW signal which developed in the stratosphere. In contrast, the downward-propagating signal reached the near surface in mid-February 2021, which may contribute to the cold air outbreak in US and may help to explain the extreme coldness of Texas in middle February.

Abstract:The planetary wave activity in the stratosphere–mesosphere during the Arctic major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in February 2018 is discussed on the basis of microwave radiometer (MWR) measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) above Kharkiv, Ukraine (50.0° N, 36.3° E) and the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements of CO, temperature and geopotential heights. From the MLS data, eastward and westward migrations of wave 1/wave 2 spectral components were differentiated, to which less attention was paid in previous studies. Abrupt changes in zonal wave spectra occurred with the zonal wind reversal near 10 February 2018. Eastward wave 1 and wave 2 were observed before the SSW onset and disappeared during the SSW event, when westward wave 1 became dominant. Wavelet power spectra of mesospheric CO variations showed statistically significant periods of 20–30 days using both MWR and MLS data. Although westward wave 1 in the mesosphere dominated with the onset of the SSW 2018, it developed independently of stratospheric dynamics. Since the propagation of upward planetary waves was limited in the easterly zonal flow in the stratosphere during SSW, forced planetary waves in the mid-latitude mesosphere may exist due to the instability of the zonal flow.

Investigation of the Abnormal Quasi 2-Day Wave Activities During the Sudden Stratospheric Warming Period of January 2006

Abstract:A quasi 2-day wave (QTDW) during the austral summer period usually coincides with a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event in the winter hemisphere, while the SSW influences on QTDWs are not totally understood. In this work, the hourly Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System-Advanced Level Physics High Altitude reanalysis data sets during January/February 2006 are utilized to study the contribution of a major SSW on the anomalous QTDW activities during the same period. Our new findings are generalized as follows: (1) The summer easterly is enhanced during a SSW event due to the interhemispheric coupling, which is clearly indicated by the anomalous cross-equator circulation from the winter to summer mesosphere. (2) The enhanced summer easterly could sustain critical layers for QTDWs with larger phase speeds (e.g., smaller zonal wave number or shortwave period) and strengthen the summer easterly barotropic/baroclinic instabilities, which are essential for the QTDW amplification through wave-mean flow interactions. This is why a strong westward QTDW with zonal wave number 2 is identified besides the conventionally dominant wave mode of wave number 3, and their periods are only similar to 42-45 hr during January 2006. (3) The strong winter planetary waves during SSW periods facilitate the occurrence of the nonlinear interaction between QTDWs and stationary planetary waves, which is strongly suggested by the abnormal temporal variations of wave number 2 and wave number 3 QTDWs. We conclude that the anomalous QTDW behaviors in summer mesosphere during January 2006 are associated with the major SSW event in the winter stratosphere.

Abstract:In this paper, a comparison of the impact of major sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) in the Arctic in February 2018 (SSW1) and January 2019 (SSW2) on the mid-latitude mesosphere is given. The mesospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and zonal wind in these two major SSW events were observed at altitudes of 70–85 km using a microwave radiometer (MWR) at Kharkiv, Ukraine (50.0°N, 36.3°E). Data from ERA-Interim and MERRA-2 reanalyses and Aura Microwave Limb Sounder measurements were also used. It is shown that: (i) The differences between SSW1 and SSW2, in terms of local variability in zonal wind, temperature, and CO in the stratosphere and mesosphere, were clearly defined by the polar vortex (westerly in cyclonic circulation) and mid-latitude anticyclone (easterly) migrating over the MWR station, therefore; (ii) mesospheric intrusions of CO-rich air into the stratosphere over the Kharkiv region occurred only occasionally, (iii) the larger zonal wave 1–3 amplitudes before SSW1 were followed by weaker polar vortex recovery than that after SSW2, (iv) the strong vortex recovery after SSW2 was supported by earlier event timing (midwinter) favoring vortex cooling due to low solar irradiance and enhanced zonal circulation, and (v) vortex strengthening after SSW2 was accompanied by wave 1–3 amplification in March 2019, which was absent after SSW1. Finally, the influence of the large-scale circulation structures formed in individual major SSW events on the locally recorded characteristics of the atmosphere is discussed.

Abstract:The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are investigated in simulations using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 6 (WACCM6). We find that the period of QBO, which is 27 months in the preindustrial and modern climate simulations, was 33 months in the LGM simulation using the proxy sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and 41 months using the model-based LGM SSTs. We show that the longer QBO period in the LGM is due to weaker wave forcing. The WACCM6 simulations of the LGM, preindustrial, and modern climates do not support previous modeling work that suggests that the QBO amplitude is smaller (larger) in a warmer (colder) climate. We find that SSWs in the LGM occurred later in the year, as compared to the preindustrial and modern climate, but that time of the final warming was similar. The difference in SSW frequency is inconclusive.

Observations of Reduced Turbulence and Wave Activity in the Arctic Middle Atmosphere Following the January 2015 Sudden Stratospheric Warming

Abstract:Measurements of turbulence and waves were made as part of the Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere Turbulence Experiment (MTeX) on the night of 25-26 January 2015 at Poker Flat Research Range, Chatanika, Alaska (65°N, 147°W). Rocket-borne ionization gauge measurements revealed turbulence in the 70- to 88-km altitude region with energy dissipation rates between 0.1 and 24 mW/kg with an average value of 2.6 mW/kg. The eddy diffusion coefficient varied between 0.3 and 134 m2/s with an average value of 10 m2/s. Turbulence was detected around mesospheric inversion layers (MILs) in both the topside and bottomside of the MILs. These low levels of turbulence were measured after a minor sudden stratospheric warming when the circulation continued to be disturbed by planetary waves and winds remained weak in the stratosphere and mesosphere. Ground-based lidar measurements characterized the ensemble of inertia-gravity waves and monochromatic gravity waves. The ensemble of inertia-gravity waves had a specific potential energy of 0.8 J/kg over the 40- to 50-km altitude region, one of the lowest values recorded at Chatanika. The turbulence measurements coincided with the overturning of a 2.5-hr monochromatic gravity wave in a depth of 3 km at 85 km. The energy dissipation rates were estimated to be 3 mW/kg for the ensemble of waves and 18 mW/kg for the monochromatic wave. The MTeX observations reveal low levels of turbulence associated with low levels of gravity wave activity. In the light of other Arctic observations and model studies, these observations suggest that there may be reduced turbulence during disturbed winters.
Multi-Instrumental Observations Of The Quasi-16-Day Variations From The Lower Thermosphere To The Topside Ionosphere In The Low-Latitude Eastern Asian Sector During The 2017 Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event

Abstract:Variations of the low-latitude ionosphere in the eastern Asian sector during the 2017 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) were studied with multi-instrumental observations that correspond to different altitudes. Specifically, the variations of the topside ionosphere as high as over 830 km were investigated with data from the Swarm B satellite (similar to 500 km), the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F15 satellite (similar to 830 km), and the Meteorological Operational satellite-A (similar to 830 km). The main results are as follows. (1) Simultaneous variations were detected in the ionospheric parameters from the E region to the topside ionosphere around the first peak warming of the 2017 SSW. (2) These variations exhibited similar quasi-16-day (Q16D; similar to 14.5-day) periods, and these periods were most significant just before the first peak warming. (3) These simultaneous Q16D variations were not due to the solar extreme ultraviolet irradiance or geomagnetic activities but were probably driven from below, by planetary waves or semidiurnal lunar tides that enhanced during the SSW. (4) The Q16D variation of the topside ionospheric electron density at similar to 830 km was probably driven not only by the upward mapping electric field modulated in the E region dynamo but also by the electric field modulated in the F region dynamo.
On the Different Quasi-2-Day Wave Behaviors during Sudden Stratospheric Warming Periods

Abstract:The temporal variations in the sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events in the winter stratosphere always coincide with the quasi-2-day wave (Q2DW) in the summer mesosphere, and the impact of SSW on Q2DW is interesting but still a mystery. Major SSWs occurred in both 2006 and 2009, while the Q2DW activity was quite different. The Second Modern Era-Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2) reanalysis dataset was used to comparatively analyze these two major SSW events and elucidate the reasons for the different Q2DW behaviors. We noticed that the summer easterly jet shows a large interannual variability. We conclude that the summer mesospheric Q2DWs are modulated by the winter SSW, whereas the modulation process is also affected by the interannual variability of the summer easterly flow itself. The effects of the SSW on the Q2DWs may differ from year to year due to the variability of the summer easterly flow itself, resulting in different anomalous Q2DW behavior. This conclusion may also be true for the interannual variability of other phenomena during the SSW period.

Observations of a strong intraseasonal oscillation in the MLT region during the 2015/2016 winter over Mohe, China

Abstract:Using meteor radar measurements at Mohe (MH, 53.5°N, 122.3°E) and the reanalysis data from 2011 to 2020, the characteristics of intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region over MH are investigated for the first time. The radar observation shows a prominent ISO with periods of 40‐60 days in the zonal wind during the 2015/2016 winter. The observed ISO is the strongest in the oscillation period of 30‐60 days during nearly a decade of observation. The ISO amplitude reaches a maximum of 16 m/s at 90 km. The vertical structure indicates that intraseasonal variabilities in the lower mesosphere contribute to the ISO in the MLT region. By bandpassing the zonal wind obtained from the reanalysis data along 122.5°E at 52 km in the Northern Hemisphere with cutoff periods of 40 and 60 days, we show that ISOs in the tropical and mid‐latitude mesosphere are related to each other. Our results also indicate that the tropical mesospheric ISO and the tropospheric Madden‐Julian Oscillations (MJO) are highly correlated. Our analysis suggests that the MJO in the equatorial troposphere may contribute to the enhancement of the ISO in the MLT region over MH. Additionally, a very strong El Niño during the 2015/2016 winter was accompanied by the positive Indian Ocean Dipole, which confines the active MJO in phases 2‐4 for a long time. This may be the reason that in the oscillation period of 30‐60 days, the ISO observed at MH is the strongest during almost a decade of observation. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In this study, the neutral density and horizontal wind observed by the four meteor radars, as well as the temperature measured by the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) onboard the Aura satellite are used to examine the response of neutral density, wind, and temperature in the MLT region to the stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) during 2005 to 2021 in the Northern Hemisphere. The four meteor radars include the Svalbard (78.3°N, 16°E) and Tromsø (69.6°N, 19.2°E) meteor radars at high latitudes and the Mohe (53.5°N, 122.3°E) and Beijing (40.3°N, 116.2°E) meteor radars at middle latitudes. The superposed epoch analysis results indicate that: 1) the neutral density over Svalbard and Tromsø at high latitude increased at the beginning of SSWs and decreased after the zonal mean stratospheric temperature reached the maximum. However, the neutral density over Mohe at midlatitudes decreased in neutral density at the beginning of SSW and increase after the zonal mean stratospheric temperature reached the maximum. 2) The zonal wind at high latitudes show a westward enhancement at the beginning of SSWs and then shows an eastward enhancement after the stratospheric temperature reaches maximum. However, the zonal wind at midlatitudes shows an opposite variation to at high latitudes, with an eastward enhancement at the onset and changing to westward enhancements after the stratospheric temperature maximum. The meridional winds at high and midlatitudes show a southward enhancement after the onset of SSW and then show a northward enhancement after the stratospheric temperature maximum. 3) In general, the temperature in the MLT region decreased throughout SSWs. However, as the latitudes decrease, the temperature cooling appears to lag a few days to the higher latitudes, and the degree of cooling will decrease relatively.
Rapid Warming of the Arctic Troposphere in the Winter During 2015–2016 and Its Relationship to the Mid‐high Latitude Teleconnection Wave Train

Abstract:During the winter of 2015-2016, an extraordinary warming event occurred in the troposphere in the Arctic region. The above-normal temperatures extended from the surface to 300 hPa in the Arctic. The number of extremely warm days derived from the surface air temperature revealed that this event was the most significant warming event since 1980. It was found that the tropospheric warming anomaly was not fully dependent on the warming anomalies at lower levels, and it formed earlier than the lower anomalies. In December 2015, there were three obvious warm centers in the troposphere in the mid-high latitude regions in eastern North America, northern Europe, and western Asia. Albeit the strongest warming anomaly occurred in North America, the prominent warm advection to the Arctic region was transported from northern Europe during the initial stage of the Arctic mid-upper tropospheric warming. Further investigation revealed that the teleconnection wave train stretching across North America to the North Atlantic and northern Europe contributed significantly to the existence of a poleward transport channel from northern Europe to the Arctic. The wave train spread from west to east and produced a strong southerly wind disturbance over the warm region in northern Europe. As a result, extraordinary poleward heat and water vapour transport occurred across the polar boundary causing substantial warming in the Arctic mid-upper troposphere. During the extreme Arctic tropospheric warming event, the dynamic processes related to the heat transport over northern Europe directly contributed to the advanced rapid warming in the Arctic mid-upper troposphere; whereas, the dynamic and thermal processes associated with the transport across the Arctic boundary jointly maintained the late stage of Arctic warming.

Abstract:Using observations from the Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission, we investigate post‐sunset ionospheric responses to the September 2019 Antarctic sudden stratospheric warming –first ever from a synoptic perspective. Observations reveal a prevalent quasi‐6‐day periodicity in the equatorial ionization anomaly region over South America and the Atlantic, coincident with enhanced quasi‐6‐day wave (Q6DW) activity in the mesosphere (Liu et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020JA028909). The atmosphere‐ionosphere coupling via large‐scale waves is rarely studied over the ocean due to the lack of observations. More importantly, further analyses suggest that multiple pathways are involved in transmitting the quasi‐6‐day periodicity from the middle atmosphere into the post‐sunset F‐region ionosphere, including modulation of F‐region field aligned winds and pre‐reversal enhancements by the tides and or Q6DW. A remarkable depletion in electron density, attributable to the overall change in thermosphere composition driven by the dissipative tides and or Q6DWs, is also seen during the period of enhanced Q6DW activity.

Abstract:In this study, we analyzed the dynamical evolution of the major 2012–2013 Northern Hemisphere (NH) stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) on the basis of ERA-Interim reanalysis data provided by the ECMWF. The intermittent upward-propagating planetary wave activities beginning in late November 2012 led to a prominent wavenumber-2 disturbance of the polar vortex in early December 2012. However, no major SSW occurred. In mid December 2012, when the polar vortex had not fully recovered, a mixture of persistent wavenumber-1 and -2 planetary waves led to gradual weakening of the polar vortex before the vortex split on 7 January 2013. Evolution of the geopotential height and Eliassen-Palm flux between 500 and 5 hPa indicates that the frequent occurrence of tropospheric ridges over North Pacific and the west coast of North America contributed to the pronounced upward planetary wave activities throughout the troposphere and stratosphere. After mid January 2013, the wavenumber-2 planetary waves became enhanced again within the troposphere, with a deepened trough over East Asia and North America and two ridges between the troughs. The enhanced tropospheric planetary waves may contribute to the long-lasting splitting of the polar vortex in the lower stratosphere. The 2012–2013 SSW shows combined features of both vortex displacement and vortex splitting. Therefore, the anomalies of tropospheric circulation and surface temperature after the 2012–2013 SSW resemble neither vortex-displaced nor vortex-split SSWs, but the combination of all SSWs. The remarkable tropospheric ridge extending from the Bering Sea into the Arctic Ocean together with the resulting deepened East Asian trough may play important roles in bringing cold air from the high Arctic to central North America and northern Eurasia at the surface.

Abstract:The representation of the Arctic stratospheric circulation and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) during the period 1981–2019 in a 40-yr Chinese global reanalysis dataset (CRA-40) is evaluated by comparing two widely used reanalysis datasets, ERA-5 and MERRA-2. CRA-40 demonstrates a comparable performance with ERA-5 and MERRA-2 in characterizing the winter and spring circulation in the lower and middle Arctic stratosphere. Specifically, differences in the climatological polar-mean temperature and polar night jet among the three reanalyses are within ±0.5 K and ±0.5 m s −1 , respectively. The onset dates of the stratospheric sudden warming and stratospheric final warming events at 10 hPa in CRA-40, together with the dynamics and circulation anomalies during the onset process of warming events, are nearly identical to the other two reanalyses with slight differences. By contrast, the CRA-40 dataset demonstrates a deteriorated performance in describing the QBO below 10 hPa compared to the other two reanalysis products, manifested by the larger easterly biases of the QBO index, the remarkably weaker amplitude of the QBO, and the weaker wavelet power of the QBO period. Such pronounced biases are mainly concentrated in the period 1981–98 and largely reduced by at least 39% in 1999–2019. Thus, particular caution is needed in studying the QBO based on CRA-40. All three reanalyses exhibit greater disagreement in the upper stratosphere compared to the lower and middle stratosphere for both the polar region and the tropics.

Perturbations of Global Wave Dynamics During Stratospheric Warming Events of the Solar Cycle 24

Abstract:<p>The paper presents analysis and interpretation of observed perturbations of global wave dynamics in the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) during the recent mid-winter Arctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events under solar minimum (2009, 2010, 2018, and 2019), transition to solar maximum (2012) and solar maximum (2013) conditions of the Solar Cycle 24. Employing the 116-level configuration of the thermosphere extension of Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCMX-116L), constrained by the meteorological troposphere-stratosphere analyses of Goddard Earth Observing System, version 5 (GEOS-5) of Global Modeling and Data Assimilation Office, we study and characterize the striking amplifications of the solar thermal semidiurnal tide, as one of the main drivers of the ITM variability, after onsets of major and minor SSW events. The dominance and growth of the semidiurnal tide over the diurnal and terdiurnal modes in the lower thermosphere above ~100 km are typical features of the tidal dynamics during major SSW events of the Solar Cycle 24 as suggested by model predictions. The growth of the semidiurnal tidal mode during SSW events is also supported by observational analysis of diurnal cycles from temperature space-borne observations (SABER/TIMED). In the vertical domain of the meteor radar observations at the Southern extra-tropics and low latitudes the model and data revealed the systematic presence of the strong quasi two-day wave wind oscillations that prevail over the tidal winds between 80 and 100 km during mid-January SSW events. In the high and middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere model simulations are capable to reproduce the day-to-day variability of tidal and PW oscillations deduced from satellite temperature data. The self-consistent whole atmosphere predictions of global-scale components of neutral dynamics (prevailing winds, planetary waves and tides) become important factor to reproduce and forecast the perturbed state of the ITM as observed from the ground and the space during SSW events of the Solar Cycle 24. The SSW-driven global perturbations of tides can significantly change diurnal cycles of the plasma in the low-latitude and extra-tropical E-region of the ionosphere as will be briefly illustrated by day-day variations of observed and simulated total electron content and plasma drifts.</p>
