Abstract:Magnetic holes are plasma structures that trap a large number of particles in a magnetic field that is weaker than the field in its surroundings. The unprecedented high time-resolution observations by NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission enable us to study the particle dynamics in magnetic holes in the Earth's magnetosheath in great detail. We reveal the local generation mechanism of whistler waves by a combination of Landau-resonant and cyclotron-resonant wave–particle interactions of electrons in response to the large-scale evolution of a magnetic hole. As the magnetic hole converges, a pair of counter-streaming electron beams form near the hole's center as a consequence of the combined action of betatron and Fermi effects. The beams trigger the generation of slightly oblique whistler waves. Our conceptual prediction is supported by a remarkable agreement between our observations and numerical predictions from the Arbitrary Linear Plasma Solver. Our study shows that wave–particle interactions are fundamental to the evolution of magnetic holes in space and astrophysical plasmas.

Abstract:Abstract The whistler-mode wave extending from the fast-magnetosonic wave branch is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory, and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves is a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyze observational data with a high time resolution from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft in front of the terrestrial bow shock (e.g., foreshock). We develop a novel approach to extract the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions (δf e( V )) from their background (f e0( V )), and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between fluctuating electrons (δf e( V )) and wavelike electromagnetic fields (δ B , δ E ) at an unprecedentedly high frequency (>1 Hz) for investigating wave–particle interactions. We provide that the unstable whistler wave grows rapidly over a timescale that is much shorter than the proton gyro-period. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, we find the ion distributions consisting of the solar wind ion flows and the ion beams reflected from the shock play crucial roles in providing the free energy and determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate and the characterization of wave–particle interactions for the instability driver can significantly advance the understandings of wave evolution and energy conversion between multisource multispecies particles and wave electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:Whistler‐mode waves are electromagnetic waves pervasively observed in the Earth's and other planetary magnetospheres. They are considered to be mainly responsible for producing the hazardous radiation and diffuse aurora, which heavily relies on their properties. Density irregularities, frequently observed in the Earth's magnetospheres, are found to change largely the properties of whistler‐mode waves. Here we report, using Van Allen Probes measurements, whistler‐mode waves strongly modulated by two different density enhancements. With particle‐in‐cell simulations, we propose wave trapping caused by field‐aligned density irregularities (ducts) may account for this phenomenon. Simulation results show that whistler‐mode waves can be trapped inside the enhanced density ducts. These trapped waves remain quasi‐parallel and usually get much larger amplitudes than those unducted whistler waves during propagation away from the magnetic equator, and tend to focus at a spatially narrow channel, consistent with observations. Abstract:Whistler mode wave is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory and astrophysics. Here, we analyse data with the high time resolution from the multi-scale magnetospheric spacecraft in the weak magnetic environment (i.e., foreshock) enabling a relatively long gyro-period of whistler mode wave. Moreover, we develop a novel approach to separate the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions from their background, and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between electrons and electromagnetic fields at high frequency, providing the resultant growth rate of unstable whistler waves. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, the ion distributions are found to also play crucial roles in determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate can significantly advance the understandings of the wave evolution and the energy conversion with particles.

Abstract:Propagation of whistler-mode waves in a magnetized plasma structure is investigated in the Keda linear magnetized plasma device.The magnetized plasma structure has its density peak in the center,and the background magnetic field is homogeneous along the axial direction.A whistler-mode wave with a frequency of 0.3 times of electron cyclotron frequency(fce)is launched into the plasma structure.The wave normal angle(WNA)is about 25°,and the wavefront exhibits a wedge structure.During propagation of the whistler wave,both the propagating angle and WNA slowly approach zero,and then the wave is converged toward the center of the structure.Therefore,the wave tends to be trapped in the plasma structure.The results present observational evidence of the propagation of a whistler-mode wave trapped in the enhanced-density structure in a laboratory plasma.This trapping effect is consistent with satellite observations in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:A new type of electron-scale coherent structure, referred to as electron vortex magnetic holes, was identified recently in the Earth’s magnetosheath turbulent plasma. These electron-scale magnetic holes are characterized by magnetic field strength depression, electron density enhancement, temperature and temperature anisotropy increase (a significant increase in perpendicular temperature and a decrease in parallel temperature), and an electron vortex formed by the trapped electrons. The strong increase of electron temperature indicates that these magnetic holes have a strong connection with the energization of electrons. Here, using high time resolution in situ measurements from the MMS mission, it is further shown that electron-scale whistler waves coexist with electron-scale magnetic holes. These whistler waves were found not propagating from remote regions, but generated locally due to electron temperature anisotropy (Te⊥/Te∥) inside the magnetic holes. This study provides new insights into the electron-scale plasma dynamics in turbulent plasmas.

Abstract:In the Earth's magnetosheath (MSH), several processes contribute to energy dissipation and plasma heating, one of which is wave-particle interactions between whistler waves and electrons. However, the overall impact of whistlers on electron dynamics in the MSH remains to be quantified. We analyze 18 hours of burst-mode measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, including data from the unbiased magnetosheath campaign during February-March 2023. We present a statistical study of 34,409 whistler waves found using automatic detection. We compare wave occurrence in the different MSH geometries and find three times higher occurrence in the quasi-perpendicular MSH compared to the quasi-parallel case. We also study the wave properties and find that the waves propagate quasi-parallel to the background magnetic field, have a median frequency of 0.2 times the electron cyclotron frequency, median amplitude of 0.03-0.06 nT (30-60 pT), and median duration of a few tens of wave periods. The whistler waves are preferentially observed in local magnetic dips and density peaks and are not associated with an increased temperature anisotropy. Also, almost no whistlers are observed in regions with parallel electron plasma beta lower than 0.1. Importantly, when estimating pitch-angle diffusion times we find that the whistler waves cause significant pitch-angle scattering of electrons in the MSH.

Despite the prevalence of different electromagnetic waves in space, there is still a lack of understanding of fundamental aspects of wave--particle interactions, particularly in terms of energy flow and velocity-space characteristics. In this study, we combine a novel quasilinear model with observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to reveal the signatures of resonant interactions between electrons and whistler waves in magnetic holes, which are coherent structures often found in the Earth's magnetosheath. We investigate the energy transfer rates and velocity-space characteristics associated with Landau and cyclotron resonances between electrons and slightly oblique propagating whistler waves. In the case of our observed magnetic hole, the loss of electron kinetic energy primarily contributes to the growth of whistler waves through the $n=-1$ cyclotron resonance, where $n$ is the order of the resonance expansion in linear Vlasov--Maxwell theory. The excitation of whistler waves leads to a reduction of the temperature anisotropy and parallel heating of the electrons. Our study offers a new and self-consistent understanding of resonant energy transfer in turbulent plasmas.

Abstract:Whistler mode waves in the plasmasphere and plumes drive significant losses of energetic electrons from the Earth's radiation belts into the upper atmosphere. In this study, we conducted a survey of amplitude‐dependent whistler wave properties and analyzed their associated background plasma conditions and electron fluxes in the plasmasphere and plumes. Our findings indicate that extremely large amplitude (>400 pT) whistler waves (a) tend to occur at L > 4 over the midnight‐dawn‐noon sectors and have small wave normal angles; (b) are more likely to occur during active geomagnetic conditions associated with higher fluxes of anisotropic electrons at 10 s keV energies; and (c) tend to occur at higher latitudes up to 20° with increasing amplitude. These results suggest that extremely large amplitude whistler waves in the plasmasphere and plumes could be generated locally by injected electrons during substorms and further amplified when propagating to higher latitudes.

Abstract:The nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic (EM) electron-cyclotron waves (whistlers) along an external magnetic field, and their modulation by electrostatic small but finite amplitude ion-acoustic density perturbations are investigated in a uniform quantum plasma with intrinsic spin of electrons. The effects of the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential and the combined effects of the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive forces (CPF and SPF respectively) are taken into consideration. The latter modify the local plasma density in a self-consistent manner. The coupled modes of wave propagation is shown to be governed by a modified set of nonlinear Schrödinger-Boussinesq-like equations which admit exact solutions in form of stationary localized envelopes. Numerical simulation reveals the existence of large-scale density fluctuations that are self-consistently created by the localized whistlers in a strongly magnetized high density plasma. The conditions for the modulational instability (MI) and the value of its growth rate are obtained. Possible applications of our results, e.g., in strongly magnetized dense plasmas and in the next generation laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments are discussed.

Abstract:Whistlers are magnetized plasma waves in planetary magnetospheres. Bounded whistlers, known as helicons, can create high-density laboratory plasmas. We demonstrate reversal of the plasma discharge direction by changing either antenna helicity or magnetic field direction. Simulations reproduce these findings only in the presence of a radial density gradient. Inclusion of such a gradient in the wave equation gives rise to azimuthal shear currents which for the first time consistently explains the preference of right- over left-handed whistlers and the discharge directionality in helicon plasmas.

Abstract:The Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS) has perceived whistler wave generation, coherent structures, and related turbulence close to the magnetopause reconnection zones. The current research examines coherent structure of whistler wave driven by an intense electron beam at the magnetopause's magnetic reconnection sites as well as by the dynamic growth of magnetic islands. A nonlinear model of high-frequency whistler wave and low-frequency magnetosonic wave has been developed by using the two-fluid approximation. Nonlinear dynamics of 3D whistler wave and magnetosonic wave have been solved by the pseudo spectral method along with the predictor-corrector method and finite difference method. The simulation's outcomes demonstrate the temporal and spatial development of the whistler localized structures and current sheets as a witness to the turbulence's existence. Moreover, the turbulent power spectra have been investigated. The formation of the thermal tail of energetic electrons has been studied using the power-law scaling of turbulence development. We determined the scale sizes of current sheets and localized structures using a semi-analytic model and showed that these scale sizes rely on the power of whistler wave. We predict that the acceleration of the energetic electrons and heating in the Magnetopause may be caused by whistler wave.

Abstract:Abstract The wave–particle cyclotron interaction is a basic process in collisionless plasmas, which results in the redistribution of the energy between plasma waves and charged particles. This paper presents an event observation in order to explore the dynamics of charged particles and plasma waves, i.e., mirror, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC), and whistler waves, in the Earth’s magnetosheath. It shows that when ions have a high-speed streaming velocity parallel to the magnetic field, EMIC waves arise. We also find that the frequency distribution of nearly parallel and nearly antiparallel whistler waves depends on the parallel streaming velocity of electrons. Based on the linear kinetic theory and the fitting plasma parameters, we show that the differential flows among ion components can enhance the ion cyclotron anisotropy instability that is even stronger than the mirror instability. The differential electron flows induce an asymmetry of the growth rate of counter-propagating whistler waves in the electron cyclotron anisotropy instability. On the other hand, the low-frequency EMIC and transverse electromagnetic waves modulate the ion pitch angle distribution. Moreover, when charged particles flow across the magnetic field, both low- and high-energy electrons are deeply trapped by mirror waves. These results illustrate new features of the observed plasma waves and charged particles in the Earth’s magnetosheath, which could inspire improvement of the wave models therein.

Abstract:The role of whistler-mode waves in the solar wind and the relationship between their electromagnetic fields and charged particles is a fundamental question in space physics. Using high-temporal-resolution electromagnetic field and plasma data from the Magnetospheric MultiScale spacecraft, we report observations of low-frequency whistler waves and associated electromagnetic fields and particle behavior in the Earth's foreshock. The frequency of these whistler waves is close to half the lower-hybrid frequency (similar to 2 Hz), with their wavelength close to the ion gyroradius. The electron bulk flows are strongly modulated by these waves, with a modulation amplitude comparable to the solar wind velocity. At such a spatial scale, the electron flows are forcibly separated from the ion flows by the waves, resulting in strong electric currents and anisotropic ion distributions. Furthermore, we find that the low-frequency whistler wave propagates obliquely to the background magnetic field ( B (0)), and results in spatially periodic magnetic gradients in the direction parallel to B (0). Under such conditions, large pitch-angle electrons are trapped in wave magnetic valleys by the magnetic mirror force, and may provide free perpendicular electron energy to excite higher-frequency whistler waves. This study offers important clues and new insights into wave-particle interactions, wave generation, and microscale energy conversion processes in the solar wind.
