Abstract:Whistlers are magnetized plasma waves in planetary magnetospheres. Bounded whistlers, known as helicons, can create high-density laboratory plasmas. We demonstrate reversal of the plasma discharge direction by changing either antenna helicity or magnetic field direction. Simulations reproduce these findings only in the presence of a radial density gradient. Inclusion of such a gradient in the wave equation gives rise to azimuthal shear currents which for the first time consistently explains the preference of right- over left-handed whistlers and the discharge directionality in helicon plasmas.

Whistler waves in the quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular magnetosheath

Abstract:In the Earth's magnetosheath (MSH), several processes contribute to energy dissipation and plasma heating, one of which is wave-particle interactions between whistler waves and electrons. However, the overall impact of whistlers on electron dynamics in the MSH remains to be quantified. We analyze 18 hours of burst-mode measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, including data from the unbiased magnetosheath campaign during February-March 2023. We present a statistical study of 34,409 whistler waves found using automatic detection. We compare wave occurrence in the different MSH geometries and find three times higher occurrence in the quasi-perpendicular MSH compared to the quasi-parallel case. We also study the wave properties and find that the waves propagate quasi-parallel to the background magnetic field, have a median frequency of 0.2 times the electron cyclotron frequency, median amplitude of 0.03-0.06 nT (30-60 pT), and median duration of a few tens of wave periods. The whistler waves are preferentially observed in local magnetic dips and density peaks and are not associated with an increased temperature anisotropy. Also, almost no whistlers are observed in regions with parallel electron plasma beta lower than 0.1. Importantly, when estimating pitch-angle diffusion times we find that the whistler waves cause significant pitch-angle scattering of electrons in the MSH.

Abstract:The nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic (EM) electron-cyclotron waves (whistlers) along an external magnetic field, and their modulation by electrostatic small but finite amplitude ion-acoustic density perturbations are investigated in a uniform quantum plasma with intrinsic spin of electrons. The effects of the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential and the combined effects of the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive forces (CPF and SPF respectively) are taken into consideration. The latter modify the local plasma density in a self-consistent manner. The coupled modes of wave propagation is shown to be governed by a modified set of nonlinear Schrödinger-Boussinesq-like equations which admit exact solutions in form of stationary localized envelopes. Numerical simulation reveals the existence of large-scale density fluctuations that are self-consistently created by the localized whistlers in a strongly magnetized high density plasma. The conditions for the modulational instability (MI) and the value of its growth rate are obtained. Possible applications of our results, e.g., in strongly magnetized dense plasmas and in the next generation laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments are discussed.

Abstract:We study wave instability in an collisionless, rarefied hot plasma (e.g. solar wind or corona). We consider the anisotropy produced by the magnetic field, when the thermal gas pressures across and along the field become unequal. We apply the 16-moment transport equations (obtained from the Boltzmann-Vlasov kinetic equation) including the anisotropic thermal fluxes. The general dispersion relation for the incompressible wave modes is derived. It is shown that a new, more complex wave spectrum with stable and unstable behavior is possible, in contrast to the classic fire-hose modes obtained in terms of the 13-moment integrated equations.

Two-fluid treatment of whistling behaviour and the warm Appleton-Hartree extension

Abstract:As an application of the completely general, ideal two-fluid analysis of waves in a warm ion-electron plasma, where six unique wave pair labels (S, A, F, M, O, and X) were identified, we here connect to the vast body of literature on whistler waves. We show that all six mode pairs can demonstrate whistling behaviour, when we allow for whistling of both descending and ascending frequency types, and when we study the more general case of oblique propagation to the background magnetic field. We show how the general theory recovers all known approximate group speed expressions for both classical whistlers and ion cyclotron whistlers, which we here extend to include ion contributions and deviations from parallel propagation. At oblique angles and at perpendicular propagation, whistlers are investigated using exact numerical evaluations of the two-fluid dispersion relation and their group speeds under Earth's magnetosphere conditions. This approach allows for a complete overview of all whistling behaviour and we quantify the typical frequency ranges where they must be observable. We use the generality of the theory to show that pair plasmas in pulsar magnetospheres also feature whistling behaviour, although not of the classical type at parallel propagation. Whistling of the high frequency modes is discussed as well, and we give the extension of the Appleton-Hartree relation for cold plasmas, to include the effect of a non-zero thermal electron velocity. We use it to quantify the Faraday rotation effect at all angles, and compare its predictions between the cold and warm Appleton-Hartree equation.

Whistler Waves as a Signature of Converging Magnetic Holes in Space Plasmas

Abstract:Magnetic holes are plasma structures that trap a large number of particles in a magnetic field that is weaker than the field in its surroundings. The unprecedented high time-resolution observations by NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission enable us to study the particle dynamics in magnetic holes in the Earth's magnetosheath in great detail. We reveal the local generation mechanism of whistler waves by a combination of Landau-resonant and cyclotron-resonant wave–particle interactions of electrons in response to the large-scale evolution of a magnetic hole. As the magnetic hole converges, a pair of counter-streaming electron beams form near the hole's center as a consequence of the combined action of betatron and Fermi effects. The beams trigger the generation of slightly oblique whistler waves. Our conceptual prediction is supported by a remarkable agreement between our observations and numerical predictions from the Arbitrary Linear Plasma Solver. Our study shows that wave–particle interactions are fundamental to the evolution of magnetic holes in space and astrophysical plasmas.

Abstract:A 2(1)/(2)-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code is used to investigate the wave phenomena in the plasma sheet of collisionless magnetic reconnection. The results show that these waves have the following characteristics: they are right-hand circularity polarized, with propagation direction nearly parallel to local magnetic field, and frequency between 0.07 and 0.17 times of local electron cyclotron frequency. Therefore we conclude that such waves are Whistler waves, and their possible excitation mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract:Propagation of whistler-mode waves in a magnetized plasma structure is investigated in the Keda linear magnetized plasma device.The magnetized plasma structure has its density peak in the center,and the background magnetic field is homogeneous along the axial direction.A whistler-mode wave with a frequency of 0.3 times of electron cyclotron frequency(fce)is launched into the plasma structure.The wave normal angle(WNA)is about 25°,and the wavefront exhibits a wedge structure.During propagation of the whistler wave,both the propagating angle and WNA slowly approach zero,and then the wave is converged toward the center of the structure.Therefore,the wave tends to be trapped in the plasma structure.The results present observational evidence of the propagation of a whistler-mode wave trapped in the enhanced-density structure in a laboratory plasma.This trapping effect is consistent with satellite observations in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Near-parallel and highly oblique magnetosonic/whistler (M/W) mode waves are frequently observed in solar wind and interplanetary shocks. These observed waves are usually analyzed by the plasma kinetic and fluid theories. This study compares the dispersion surface and electromagnetic responses of the M/W mode wave under both kinetic and fluid theories in the plasmas with beta(p) = beta(e) similar or equal to 1 in detail. In comparison with the kinetic theory, it proposes that the hot fluid theory is suitable to obtain the dispersion relation, the ratio of the parallel to perpendicular magnetic fluctuation B-z/B-perpendicular to, and the ratio of the electric to magnetic fluctuation E/B. Except the near-parallel low-frequency M/W mode, the hot fluid theory would be used to calculate the ratio between two magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the wave vector B-1/B-2, the magnetic helicity sigma, and the ratio of the parallel to perpendicular electric fluctuation E-z/E-perpendicular to of the M/W mode waves. The cold fluid theory is good at describing the magnetic responses including B-z/B-perpendicular to, B-1/B-2, and sigma, but it underestimates omega, E/B, and E-z/E-perpendicular to for the obliquely propagating M/W mode wave. Furthermore, both hot and cold fluid theories can obtain the ratio of the longitudinal to transverse electric fluctuation relative to the wave vector E-L/E-P of the obliquely propagating low-frequency M/W mode. These results provide an indicator about how to choose the adequate theory to analyze the observations of the M/W mode waves in the solar wind and interplanetary shocks. Besides, from the dispersion surface in kinetic theory, it shows that the relative weak damping arises for the low-frequency branch at the angle around 0 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees and for the high-frequency branch with omega similar to [omega(cp), 300 omega(cp)] at the normal angle smaller than 60 degrees, which indicates the possible angle and frequency of the freely propagating M/W mode waves. Whistler Wave Turbulence in Solar Wind Plasma

Abstract:Whistler waves are present in solar wind plasma. These waves possess characteristic turbulent fluctuations that are characterized typically by the frequency and length scales that are respectively bigger than ion gyro frequency and smaller than ion gyro radius. The electron inertial length is an intrinsic length scale in whistler wave turbulence that distinguishably divides the high frequency solar wind turbulent spectra into scales smaller and bigger than the electron inertial length. We present nonlinear three dimensional, time dependent, fluid simulations of whistler wave turbulence to investigate their role in solar wind plasma. Our simulations find that the dispersive whistler modes evolve entirely differently in the two regimes. While the dispersive whistler wave effects are stronger in the large scale regime, they do not influence the spectral cascades which are describable by a Kolmogorov-like $k^{-7/3}$ spectrum. By contrast, the small scale turbulent fluctuations exhibit a Navier-Stokes like evolution where characteristic turbulent eddies exhibit a typical $k^{-5/3}$ hydrodynamic turbulent spectrum. By virtue of equipartition between the wave velocity and magnetic fields, we quantify the role of whistler waves in the solar wind plasma fluctuations.

Abstract:Context. Whistler waves are electromagnetic waves produced by electron-driven instabilities, that in turn can reshape the electron distributions via wave-particle interactions. In the solar wind, they are one of the main candidates for explaining the scattering of the strahl electron population into the halo at increasing radial distances from the Sun and for subsequently regulating the solar wind heat flux. However, it is unclear what type of instability dominates to drive whistlers in the solar wind. Aims. Our goal is to study whistler wave parameters in the young solar wind sampled by Parker Solar Probe (PSP). The wave normal angle (WNA) in particular is a key parameter to discriminate between the generation mechanisms of these waves. Methods. We analyze the cross-spectral matrices of magnetic fieldfluctuations measured by the Search-Coil Magnetometer (SCM) and processed by the Digital Fields Board (DFB) from the FIELDS suite during PSP's first perihelion. Results. Among the 2701 wave packets detected in the cross spectra, namely individual bins in time and frequency, most were quasi-parallel to the background magnetic field but a significant part (3%) of observed waves had oblique (> 45°) WNA. The validation analysis conducted with the time-series waveforms reveal that this percentage is a lower limit. Moreover, we find that about 64% of the whistler waves detected in the spectra are associated with at least one magnetic dip. Conclusions. We conclude that magnetic dips provides favorable conditions for the generation of whistler waves. We hypothesize that the whistlers detected in magnetic dips are locally generated by the thermal anisotropy as quasi-parallel and can gain obliqueness during their propagation. We finally discuss the implication of our results for the scattering of the strahl in the solar wind.

Inhomogeneous whistler turbulence in low beta space plasmas

Abstract:A nonlinear two dimensional fluid model of whistler turbulence is developed that nonlinearly couples wave magnetic field with electron density perturbations. This coupling leads essentially to finite compressibility effects in whistler turbulence model. Interestingly it is found from our simulations that despite strong compressibility effects, the density fluctuations couple only weakly to the wave magnetic field fluctuations. In a characteristic regime where large scale whistlers are predominant, the weakly coupled density fluctuations do not modify inertial range energy cascade processes. Consequently, the turbulent energy is dominated by the large scale (compared to electron inertial length) eddies and it follows a Kolmogorov-like $k^{-7/3}$ spectrum, where $k$ is a characteristic wavenumber. The weak coupling of the density fluctuations is explained on the basis of a whistler wave parameter that quantifies the contribution of density perturbations in the wave magnetic field.

Abstract:Whistler‐mode waves are electromagnetic waves pervasively observed in the Earth's and other planetary magnetospheres. They are considered to be mainly responsible for producing the hazardous radiation and diffuse aurora, which heavily relies on their properties. Density irregularities, frequently observed in the Earth's magnetospheres, are found to change largely the properties of whistler‐mode waves. Here we report, using Van Allen Probes measurements, whistler‐mode waves strongly modulated by two different density enhancements. With particle‐in‐cell simulations, we propose wave trapping caused by field‐aligned density irregularities (ducts) may account for this phenomenon. Simulation results show that whistler‐mode waves can be trapped inside the enhanced density ducts. These trapped waves remain quasi‐parallel and usually get much larger amplitudes than those unducted whistler waves during propagation away from the magnetic equator, and tend to focus at a spatially narrow channel, consistent with observations.
