Abstract:As an application of the completely general, ideal two-fluid analysis of waves in a warm ion-electron plasma, where six unique wave pair labels (S, A, F, M, O, and X) were identified, we here connect to the vast body of literature on whistler waves. We show that all six mode pairs can demonstrate whistling behaviour, when we allow for whistling of both descending and ascending frequency types, and when we study the more general case of oblique propagation to the background magnetic field. We show how the general theory recovers all known approximate group speed expressions for both classical whistlers and ion cyclotron whistlers, which we here extend to include ion contributions and deviations from parallel propagation. At oblique angles and at perpendicular propagation, whistlers are investigated using exact numerical evaluations of the two-fluid dispersion relation and their group speeds under Earth's magnetosphere conditions. This approach allows for a complete overview of all whistling behaviour and we quantify the typical frequency ranges where they must be observable. We use the generality of the theory to show that pair plasmas in pulsar magnetospheres also feature whistling behaviour, although not of the classical type at parallel propagation. Whistling of the high frequency modes is discussed as well, and we give the extension of the Appleton-Hartree relation for cold plasmas, to include the effect of a non-zero thermal electron velocity. We use it to quantify the Faraday rotation effect at all angles, and compare its predictions between the cold and warm Appleton-Hartree equation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are related to the behavior of whistler waves in the Earth's magnetosphere and their characteristics at different propagation angles. Specifically, the research focuses on: 1. **Extension of whistler wave behavior**: The paper aims to show that all six mode pairs (S, A, F, M, O, and X) can exhibit whistler wave behavior, which includes not only the frequency - decreasing type of whistler waves but also the frequency - increasing type. In addition, the study also explores the whistler wave behavior of these modes in the case of non - parallel propagation relative to the background magnetic field. 2. **Extension of group velocity approximation**: The paper extends the classical whistler wave group velocity approximation to be applicable to non - parallel propagation cases and takes into account the contribution of ions. These approximate formulas can better describe the change in the group velocity of whistler waves at different propagation angles. 3. **Extension of the Appleton - Hartree equation**: The paper extends the widely - used cold - plasma Appleton - Hartree equation to include the influence of non - zero electron thermal velocities. This extension helps to more accurately describe the Faraday rotation effect and compare the Faraday rotation effects in cold and warm plasmas. 4. **Numerical calculation and analysis**: By numerically calculating the two - fluid dispersion relation and its group velocity, the paper provides a complete overview of the behavior of whistler waves under Earth magnetosphere conditions and quantifies the observability of these behaviors within a typical frequency range. 5. **Whistler waves in the pulsar magnetosphere**: The paper also explores whether whistler wave behavior exists in the two - component plasma in the pulsar magnetosphere, although this behavior is different from the classical whistler waves in the case of parallel propagation. ### Specific problems and solutions - **Identification of whistler wave behavior**: - Through numerical calculation and theoretical analysis, the paper shows that all six mode pairs can exhibit whistler wave behavior at different propagation angles. - Special attention is paid to the frequency - decreasing and frequency - increasing types of whistler waves and their performance under non - parallel propagation conditions. - **Improvement of group velocity approximation**: - The paper derives the whistler wave group velocity approximation formula considering the contribution of ions and non - parallel propagation. - These approximation formulas are verified in the frequency ranges of classical whistler waves and ion - cyclotron whistler waves and are compared with numerical results. - **Extension of the Appleton - Hartree equation**: - The paper extends the Appleton - Hartree equation of cold plasma to include the influence of non - zero electron thermal velocities. - Through this extension, the paper can more accurately describe the Faraday rotation effect and compare the Faraday rotation effects in cold and warm plasmas. - **Numerical calculation and experimental verification**: - The paper verifies the accuracy of the theoretical model by numerically calculating the two - fluid dispersion relation and its group velocity. - The numerical results are compared with the known whistler wave observation data to further verify the validity of the model. - **Whistler waves in the pulsar magnetosphere**: - The paper explores whether whistler wave behavior exists in the two - component plasma in the pulsar magnetosphere. - The results show that although the whistler wave behavior in the pulsar magnetosphere is different from the classical whistler waves, it does exist. Through these studies, the paper not only expands the understanding of whistler wave behavior but also provides new theoretical tools and methods for future research.
