Abstract:We present a simple theoretical description of recently measured giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in granular ferromagnetic systems. We propose that single-domain ferromagnetic particles embedded in a metallic medium form a series of randomly distributed and spin-dependent potential barriers and wells. This spin-dependent scattering is considered as the main origin of the GMR effect. Good agreement with experiment is found for phase-separated Co x Cu 1−x samples.

Abstract:A quantum explanation based on the previous semi-classical theory has been presented for the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in this letter. A simple model Hamiltonian has been proposed for the conduction electrons in the magnetic layered structures in which the interaction of the conduction electrons with the local spins and the spin-dependent scattering potential have been considered, then an analytical expression of the effective electric conductivity is derived after some simplifying procedures. The main feature of the GMR effect may be explained by this simple model qualitatively.

Abstract:Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) were studied in spin valves of FeCo/Cu/(FeCo)(1-x)Gd-x and magnetic tunnel junctions of FeCo/AlO/(FeCo)(1-x)Gd-x, respectively. When the FeCoGd layer is thick enough, both GMR and TMR ratios change their signs from positive to negative at the compensation composition with 0.293 <= x(0)<= 0.337 as the Gd content is increased. This scenario is originated from a competition of rare-earth and transition-metal spins in FeCoGd layers with antiferromagnetic coupling. Accordingly, it is deduced that in the FeCoGd layer the spin polarizations P-N of electrons at the Fermi level and tunneling spin polarization P-TSP are negative and positive for x < x(0), respectively, and vice versa for x>x(0). Abstract:The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) characteristics of hybrid perpendicular/Cu/in-plane magnetic anisotropy [Pd/Co]/Cu/Co single spin valves and [Pd/Co]/Cu/Co/Cu/[Co/Pd] dual spin valves with applied field perpendicular and parallel to the film plane are studied. Linear and nonhysteretic GMR behaviors are observed for the two spin valves in perpendicular-to-plane applied fields due to the coherent rotation of the Co layer driven by the in-plane shape anisotropy. The GMR value of the dual spin valve is 1.8 times as large as that of the single spin valve. The correlations between the magnetic configuration of the devices and the resistance evolvement are analyzed. In-plane GMR curves with maximum applied field of 30 kOe deviate from the linear behavior and can be well described by the Stoner–Wohlfarth model including high order anisotropy terms. Moreover, obvious hysteresis behavior is observed in the in-plane GMR curve of the dual spin valve. This phenomenon results from the hindered rotation of the Co/Pd moments due to the magnetostatic coupling between the top and bottom Co/Pd multilayers in the dual spin valve.
Dependence of GMR on NiFe Layer Thickness in High Sensitive Simple Spin Valve

Abstract:The dependence of the giant magnetoresistance on Ni81Fe19 soft magnetic layer thickness is investigated experimentally for a simple spin valve with a top-pinned structure of Ta (6 nm)/Ni81Fe19/Co90Fe10 (1 nm)/Cu (1.8 nm)/Co90Fe10 (3.5 nm)/Ir20Mn80 (8 nm)/Ta (6 nm). With Ni81Fe19 thickness increased from 6 nm to 7 nm, the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio decreases sharply from 8.34% to 3.34%, whereas it changes only slightly within the thickness ranges from 2-6 nm and from 7-12 run, and larger MR ratios are obtained in the range from 2-6 nm. For a spin valve with an optimized thickness of Ir20Mn80 (11 nm) and top Ta (3 nm), the MR dependence is in accordance with the former structure when Ni81Fe19 thickness changes from 3.5 to 5.5 nm, and an optimized spin valve with 4.5-nm-thick Ni81Fe19 is obtained. This spin valve has a large MR ratio (9.15%), low coercive force (0.85 Oe), and high sensitivity, which makes it promising for applications.

Abstract:The transport in a system with inhomogeneous elastic scattering is described in terms of a probabilityconserved Boltzmann equation. We demonstrate that the spatially varied current density depends only on the voltage drop between the ends of the sample. This fact enables us to develop a formal and general theory for the conductivity without determining the actual electric field inside the sample. The theory is first applied to multilayer systems and shown to recover the previous theory. By including the spin-dependent interface scattering and bulk scattering, we employ our theory to account for the giant magnetoresistance (MR) in magnetic granular systems with both spherical and cylindrical granules. The results obtained reproduce the experimental dependence of the MR on annealing temperature.
