Abstract:This work proposes a new lateral foreland thrusting model based on geological evidence and 3-D particle discrete-element simulation to explain the Longmenshan southeastward thrusting during the closure of the Songpan-Ganze basin. The Late Triassic NE−SW compression caused by the northward movement of the Qiangtang Block and the resulting differential shortening within the wedge-shaped Songpan-Ganze terrane produced southeastward topographic gradient. The thick sedimentary pile, driven by the horizontal tectonic force and the deviatoric stress generated from gravitational effect, and decoupled from the subducting basement by the low-strength décollement, was laterally extruded and resulted in the southeastward Longmenshan thrusting. Therefore, the Longmenshan thrust belt is a lateral foreland thrust belt of the Songpan-Ganze terrane. For the first time, 3-D particle discrete-element simulation was used for the geological study of the Longmenshan area, and it clearly reproduces the dynamical process of the Longmenshan southeastward thrusting and well predicts the Xiaojin Arcuate Zone. The particle discrete-element simulation results verify the new model and reveal that two key factors facilitate the lateral foreland thrusting: the wedge-shaped geometry that produces differential shortening and lateral topographic gradient, and the low-strength décollement that decouples the extruded sedimentary pile from the basement. The lateral foreland thrust belt, which is unique in its tectonic location and dynamic behavior, is a new kind of foreland thrust belt that is different from the pro-foreland and retro-foreland thrust belts, and it provides new insight into the tectonic evolution of collisional orogens.
Oblique Thrusting and Strain Partitioning in the Longmen Shan Fold‐and‐Thrust Belt, Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Eastern Tibet is an important example of oblique convergence and associated strain partitioning, as suggested by recent 2‐D and 3‐D structural interpretations, yet the nature and evolution of oblique strain partitioning of this region remain poorly known. Here we use seismic reflection profiles, borehole data, and field investigations in the Longmen Shan piedmont to determine the subsurface structural architecture, and we observe several nearly N‐S striking thrusts and reactivation of NE striking preexisting faults. We interpret that this behavior is due to a regional principal compressional stress oriented in the E‐W direction, oblique to the NE striking Longmen Shan. Using the records of fault activity and related Late Pliocene and Quaternary foreland sediments and growth strata, as well as the coseismic rupture of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, we demonstrate that the Longmen Shan has experienced E‐W crustal shortening and oblique motion since ~5–2 Ma. We present two strain partitioning models arising from oblique thrusting in eastern Tibet and suggest that the eastward extrusion from Tibet is mainly accommodated on the strike‐slip Longriba fault and the dip‐slip Longmen Shan‐Min Shan fault zones. These results enhance our understanding of the tectonic relationship between the Songpan‐Ganzi terrane and the Sichuan basin and provide additional constraints for studies of the geodynamic response of eastern Tibet to the ongoing India‐Eurasia collision.

Abstract:Though it is widely accepted that the Paleo-Pacific Plate has a subducted beneath the eastern Asian continent, controversy still exists regarding the initial timing and geodynamic model of the subduction. In this contribution, we report new geochronology and geochemical data of granitic plutons within the Gan-Hang Belt in Southeast China. The Damaoshan pluton yields zircon U-Pb ages of 139.60 ± 0.69 Ma and 133.90 ± 1.70 Ma, and the Qianshan and Fenglonggu plutons are dated at 135.70 ± 1.30 Ma and 135.33 ± 0.93 Ma, respectively. The Hecun and Huangtuling plutons yield ages of 157.85 ± 0.77 Ma and 167.10 ± 7.50 Ma, respectively. The Damaoshan pluton has an obvious A-type geochemical signature in terms of major and trace element compositions, such as high K2O + Na2O contents (average 8.46 wt%) and FeOT/MgO ratios (average 10.29). The low CaO/Na2O ratios but high Al2O3/TiO2 (average is 110.05), Rb/Ba (average is 9.14), and Rb/Sr (average is 22.53) ratios indicate a derivation from pelite-derived melt. Meanwhile, we also studied the Mesozoic adakites related to magmatic ore formed during a compressive tectonic setting as well as the later bimodal dikes and A-type granitic plutons formed during the extensional tectonic setting in the Gan-Hang Belt. The multiphase qualitative plutons with geochemical characteristics of the adakitic and island arc types (175–150 Ma) related to the northwestward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate, several bimodal dikes, and A-type granitic plutons (135–123 Ma) related to the subducted slab roll-back are found within the Gan-Hang Belt. All of these plutons show a decreasing trend of isotopic ages from the inland area to the coast, from SW to NE. We propose that the distribution pattern of these plutons in Southeast China was controlled by a scissors-like subduction and slab roll-back of the Paleo-Pacific Plate, which occurred roughly from SW to NE along the continental margin approximately during the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous.

Abstract:Since the Late Cenozoic, the central-southern Longmen Shan (LMS) region is characterized by a two-decollement thrust-fold system with a localized upper evaporite weaker layer just beneath the Sichuan Basin and the lower stronger decollement beneath the LMS. To date, the role of upper decollement and erosion in shaping the structural deformation of the LMS remains unknown. The investigation of this question may shed lights on the assessment of the structural evolution and the further discrimination of mountain building mechanism. In this work, a 2D finite difference method is applied with regards to the variations of viscosity/friction angle, and lengths of upper decollement under different erosion rates. Two types of numerical models are setup, with purely lower-upper frictional (FF) decollements and lower-frictional upper-viscous (FV) decollements. Tectonic evolution with FF models exhibits large similarity with that of FV models. Meanwhile, our results underline the presence of in-sequence fault propagation procedures during most of the stages. The development of the boundary ramp, the Range Frontal Blind fault, is strongly induced by a prerequisite with upper decollement of necessary length. The activation of Beichuan/Pengguan faults or blind ramp piercing to the surface is extremely mechanically sensitive to the viscosity of the salt decollement, erosion rate, and the length of the upper decollement. Out-of-sequence thrusting, shallow and possible basal accretion processes beneath the Sichuan Basin are found when deformation transfers from the thick-skinned LMS to the thin-skinned Sichuan Basin at the very late stage, supporting upper crustal shortening dominates the mountain building mechanism.

Abstract:In response to the multistage convergences across the western margin of the Sichuan Basin, a complex thrust belt developed along the Longmen Shan thrust belt (LTB). Compressional analogue modeling with double weak detachments is carried out to shed light on the development and kinematics of the triangle zone at the front of the northern LTB. (1) Two weak detachments create an essential configuration for the development of duplexes. Each detachment displays different mechanical behaviors during the evolution of the thrust belt and decouples deformation at different depths. (2) Regular erosion at the thrust front can effectively localize strain and promote the development of the back-thrust along the upper detachment to generate a sustained passive-roof duplex in the front. The similarity of the tectonic deformation between the analogue modeling and northern LTB implies a possible evolutionary mechanism of the Shuangyushi Structure. The Middle Triassic and early Cambrian weak layers act as two pivotal detachments, decoupling the tectonic styles at different depths. During the Indosinian and Yanshanian period, continuous compression contributed to the establishment of the main tectonic framework of a passive-roof duplex. In the following Himalayan period, the eastward compression complicated the middle structural layer and uplifted the thrust front, and was accompanied by regular erosion, contributing to the development of a passive-roof duplex.

Abstract:The Lancang metamorphic complex is a key component of the Three River Tethys Orogen in the SE Tibetan Plateau, with typical rock assemblages and deformation fabrics recording the subduction of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and subsequent continental collision. In this study, we present new petrographic and structural observations, together with zircon U-Pb and mica 40Ar/39Ar geochronologic data, to reveal the deformation and kinematics of the Lancang metamorphic complex, thus providing insights into the Permian−Triassic evolution of the eastern Paleo-Tethys domain. The subduction of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and subsequent collision resulted in a range of structural features, including penetrative regional foliations, thrusts, asymmetric folds at various scales, and ductile deformation fabrics such as asymmetric boudins and porphyroclasts. Zircon U-Pb dating of foliated gabbro and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mica schist and mylonite, which preserve shortening fabrics, suggest that the Paleo-Tethys Ocean was subducted during the Late Carboniferous to Permian−Early Triassic, and the collision of the Baoshan and Simao blocks mainly occurred during ca. 237−230 Ma in the SE Tibetan Plateau. Regional deformation likely shifted from shortening to extension ca. 230 Ma, as reflected by post-collision high-K calc-alkaline magmatism. Our results document regional structural patterns and place timing constraints on the evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean.

Abstract:Multi-scale intracontinental deformations were developed in response to the tectonic evolution of the southern Longmenshan tectonic belt (LMS) on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Detailed studies, including field structural analysis and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), were conducted on sedimentary rocks in the foreland basin of the southern Longmenshan tectonic belt (FBSL) in order to better understand the tectonic evolution of the southern LMS. Field observations show that FBSL deformations are mainly characterized by broad and gentle folds in a NE–SW direction and shallow thrust faults. At least two sedimentary discontinuities and two-stage deformations occurred after the deposition of Cretaceous strata. Samples of magnetic fabrics from the Qionglai–Changshiba profile were characterized by the triaxial magnetic susceptibility ellipsoids common in sedimentary rocks. The magnetic fabrics of the profile represent a weak deformation that was associated with layer-parallel shortening before folding and mainly reflect the Mesozoic–Cenozoic NW–SE convergence. There are also the following atypical magnetic fabrics: magnetic foliation that is oblique to the bedding and that was associated with layer-parallel simple shearing during folding; and magnetic lineation that is to varying degrees oblique to the strike of bedding and represents a superposition of structures. Based on the correlation results of magnetic fabrics for samples of different ages, a tectonic superposition since the Late Indosinian Orogeny was found in FBSL. By combining field structural analysis and magnetic fabrics, it was suggested herein that the FBSL is a propagation product of Mesozoic–Cenozoic deformations of southern LMS to the southeast, which therefore experienced a composite superposition of deformations. This finding provides the basis for a comprehensive understanding of the southern LMS and may shed light on the uplift of the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau and the tectonic response of its eastern boundary.
