Abstract:The initiation and evolution of compressional intracontinental orogens are favored by rheologically weak lithosphere underneath; however, how this weakened lithosphere responds to the regional stress regime remains vigorously debated. The Tien Shan mountains in central Asia provide the best example to illustrate the deep deformational responses to intracontinental orogenesis. We present new constraints on the nature of seismic anisotropy in the crust and upper mantle of the central Tien Shan through shear-wave splitting analyses. Our results reveal a sharp change in the orientations of crustal anisotropic fabrics on two sides of the mountains. The convergence-parallel fast orientations in the northern segment are closely related to the lower-crustal simple-shear deformation caused by the underthrusting of the Kazakh Shield, whereas the depth-independent orogen-parallel fast orientations in the southern segment suggest vertically coherent pure-shear thickening of the Tien Shan lithosphere in response to the northward indentation of the Tarim Basin. The thickened lithosphere has partly foundered into the deep mantle, contributing to the accelerated shortening deformation in the late Cenozoic. Our observations demonstrate the complex tectonic processes in the Tien Shan and suggest that the rheological properties of bounding blocks can play a significant role in shaping the lithospheric structures of intracontinental orogens.

Abstract:The mechanisms causing the uplifting of the Tien Shan, one of the largest and most active intracontinental orogenic belts on Earth, have been vigorously debated for decades. Seismic investigation is a fundamental tool used for deep structural exploration and is key to understanding continental geodynamics. As such, in this study, we reviewed the recent research progress on the crustal and upper-mantle structures of the Tien Shan and the remaining controversies. The results showed that the Tien Shan and adjacent basins exhibit contrasting structural and physical properties from the crust down to the upper mantle in various aspects, such as crustal thickness, Moho morphology, mantle transition-zone thickness, seismic velocity, and seismic attenuation. The mountainous areas have complex crustal seismic anisotropy patterns, whereas orogen-parallel anisotropic fabrics dominate at upper mantle depths. Low-velocity anomalies pervasively exist in the mid-lower crust and uppermost mantle of Tien Shan. Taken together, these observations provide evidence of the important roles played by intracontinental subduction and mantle upwelling in Cenozoic orogenesis of the Tien Shan. However, further development of our understanding of the geodynamics in Tien Shan has been hindered by the low imaging resolution of seismic anisotropy, lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, and mantle transition zone in eastern Tien Shan. And some important geophysical parameters and their implications are still far from being well-understood. Future deployment of dense temporary seismic arrays in the eastern Tien Shan and joint inversion of multiple and complementary geophysical data will considerably increase the resolution of seismic models and ultimately enhance our knowledge of geodynamic evolution in compressional intracontinental orogens.
Distinct Orogenic Processes in the South- and North-Central Tien Shan From Receiver Functions

Abstract:Uplifting mechanisms for the Tien Shan, an active intracontinental orogenic belt, have been under debate for decades, a key issue being how the convergence has been accommodated at depth. Here we investigate the Moho structure across the Central Tien Shan by common-conversion-point imaging and H-k-c stacking of receiver functions from a dense array. The observed Moho exhibits distinct characteristics among subblocks. A southward-dipping diffuse Moho is imaged in the South-Central Tien Shan (SCTS), in contrast with the relatively flat and sharp Moho beneath the Tarim Basin. This feature along with the large Moho offset beneath the South-Boundary Fault suggests that the shortening and thickening of the Tien Shan crust rather than the underthrusting of the Tarim Basin are responsible for the uplift of the SCTS. In the North-Central Tien Shan, however, the imaged Moho doublet provides direct evidence for the underthrusting of the Kazakh Shield accommodating the convergence there. Plain Language Summary The formation of the Tien Shan mountains, situated similar to 1,500 km north of the plate boundary between India and Eurasia, has puzzled scientists for decades. Tectonic activities at depth could deform and thus leave footprints on subsurface interfaces such as the crust-mantle boundary (Moho). In this study, we reveal distinct Moho structure in the southern and northern parts of the Central Tien Shan through analyses of seismic records, suggesting different mountain building processes in the two regions. The strong Tarim Basin to the south squeezes the weak South-Central Tien Shan mass just as a wooden block squeezes plasticine. The Kazakh lower crust in the north, on the other hand, underthrusts beneath the North-Central Tien Shan. The combined effects of the two processes lead to the rapid growth of the present-day Tien Shan.

Abstract:In central Asia, the Tianshan mountains have undergone a series of subduction-collision-accretion processes during Paleozoic times that resulted in forming basement structures later reactivated during the Cenozoic rejuvenation of the range. In the northern Tianshan-South Junggar foreland basin, en échelon W-E / WNW-ESE folds constitute the large-scale fold-and-thrust belt (FTB). Using recent industrial 2-D and 3-D seismic surveys carried out in the western area of the FTB, we have analyzed outcropping structures (Dushanzi and Xihu anticlines) and buried structures (Gaoquan, Kadong, Kayindike, and Dunan anticlines). Observing that the strike of these structures changes from W-E in the east to NW-SE in the west, we investigated the parameters that controlled this lateral variation along the FTB. We particularly analyzed the structural and kinematic relationships between deep Mesozoic and shallow Neogene-Quaternary structures. We support our investigation by using seismic interpretation and balanced restoration. Our results provide new insights into the structural and kinematical history of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the northern Tianshan foreland basin, and into the record of deformation propagation. We first demonstrated that the tectonic and sedimentary evolution during the Triassic and Jurassic is characterized by NW-SE and NNW-SSE strike-slip faults that controlled the development of pull-apart and restraining bend systems. These features were partially reactivated during the Neogene-Quaternary contractional deformation, depending on their position relative to the mountain front. Second, we quantified that about 7 km of total S-N shortening has been accommodated across the western area of the FTB. We also quantified the displacement rate accommodated on every single structure. It is ~0.13-0.2 mm/yr in the Gaoquan anticline since Quaternary, ~0.19-0.30 mm/yr in the Dunan anticline since Quaternary, ~0.36 mm/yr in Dushanzi anticline since Pliocene and ~0.30-1.2 mm/yr in the Xihu, Kadong and Kayindike anticlines during Quaternary times. Additionally, the rate of thrusting above the reactivated strike-slip faults in the Gaoquan anticline is 3 to 6 times lower than that of thrusting above the inactive strike-slip faults of the Kadong and Kayindike anticlines. This suggests that the reactivation of the basement strike-slip fault zone partitioned the contractional strain during Quaternary times. Finally, we integrate our results in a 3-D model of the western area of the FTB that illustrates the spatial pattern of structures at depth. Notably, it emphasizes how deep Mesozoic structures exerted a primary control on the growth of Cenozoic thrust-related folds by localizing the nucleation of thrust ramps during compression. This pattern of deep vs. shallow deformation interaction might be applied in some other areas of the Tianshan foreland basin.
Mantle Seismic Anisotropy Beneath NE China and Implications for the Lithospheric Delamination Hypothesis Beneath the Southern Great Xing'an Range

Abstract:We measured shear wave splitting from SKS data recorded by the transcontinental NECESSArray in NE China to constrain lithosphere deformation and sublithospheric flows beneath the area. We selected several hundreds of high quality SKS/SKKS waveforms from 32 teleseismic earthquakes occurring between 09/01/2009 and 08/31/2011 recorded by 125 broadband stations. These stations cover a variety of tectonic terranes, including the Songliao basin, the Changbaishan mountain range and Zhangguancai range in the east, the Great Xing'an range in the west and the Yanshan orogenic belt in the southwest. We assumed each station is underlaid by a single anisotropic layer and employed a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) weighted multi-event stacking method to estimate the two splitting parameters (the fast polarization direction φ, and delay time, δt) that gives the best fit to all the SKS/SKKS waveforms recorded at each station. Overall, the measured fast polarization direction lies more or less along the NW–SE direction, which significantly differs from the absolute plate motion direction, but is roughly consistent with the regional extension direction. This suggests that lithosphere deformation is likely the general cause of the observed seismic anisotropy. The most complicated anisotropic structure is observed beneath the southern Great Xing'an range and southwest Songliao basin. The observed large variations in splitting parameters and the seismic tomographic images of the area are consistent with ongoing lithospheric delamination beneath this region.
Lateral Structural Variations and Drainage Response along the Misikantage Anticline in the Western Kuqa Fold-and-thrust Belt, Southern Tianshan, NW China

Abstract:The Cenozoic Kuqa fold-and-thrust belt (KFTB) along the southern piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains (NW China) provides excellent chances for investigating active deformation and its controls on landscape topography. In contrast to the well-imaged eastern KFTB, the structural deformation in the western part complicated by the development of early-stage salt structures still has not been well investigated. On the basis of seismic reflection profiles, well data and surface geology, combined with previously determined paleomagnetic ages, this study focuses on the deformation style, onset and average shortening rate of the Misikantage anticline in the western KFTB. Together with the morphometric analysis of satellite images and digital elevation models (DEMs), we have demonstrated that: 1) the Misikantage anticline is an asymmetric detachment fold, where the fold geometry, amounts of shortening, outcropping strata and channel network patterns vary along strike; 2) syntectonic growth strata recognized from seismic profiles combined with paleomagnetic ages indicate that the folding started at ~2.4Ma and resulted in ~0.3–0.9km of shortening, yielding an average shortening rate of ~0.12–0.38mm/yr; 3) the landscape topography and drainage networks markedly change in response to lateral structural variations. These findings would provide a basis for further comparisons of compressional structures between the eastern and western KFTB, which are also helpful in better understanding active folding in fold-and-thrust belts particularly where thick salt is involved in deformation.

Abstract:In this study, we obtain a three-dimensional (3-D) high resolution seismic anisotropy model of NE Tibet using ambient noise double beamforming (DBF) tomography with ChinArray-Himalaya II data. DBF tomography technique allows for the simultaneous derivation of local phase velocity and azimuthal anisotropy from ambient noise cross-correlations without performing tomographic inversion. Based on the DBF tomography results, we have constructed a high resolution 3-D azimuthal anisotropic shear wave velocity model of NE Tibet. Our model indicates the presence of prominent low velocities and strong azimuthal anisotropy in the mid-to lower crust beneath the Songpan-Ganzi belt, while the mid-to lower crust of the Qilian belt exhibits relatively weak low velocity and azimuthal anisotropy. We propose that crustal channel flow may be the primary mechanism driving crustal deformation in the Songpan-Ganzi belt, which is in the mature part of the plateau. As the Qilian belt is at an early stage of plateau formation, it is characterized by crustal shortening with the development of a sub-vertical foliation. Additionally, the misalignment between predicted and observed shear wave splitting reveals decoupled crust and upper mantle deformation west of the Ordos block where eastward mantle flow is deflected by the lithospheric keel of Ordos.

Abstract:Abstract Widespread rotations of maximum compressive stress in the upper crust are revealed in eastern Tibet by the focal mechanism stress inversion technique. Because of the good correlation with locations of folds, anticlines, and mountains in the region, the upper crustal stress variation is related to the lateral displacement of upper crust. To compare deformations in upper crust and upper mantle, we use SKS/SKKS splitting measurements to investigate the seismic anisotropy in eastern Tibet. The fast polarization directions subparallel to the strikes of faults in Chuandian fragment and southern boundary tectonic belt. This may indicate that the induced anisotropy mainly resulted from alignment of fault fabrics by strong shearing along strike‐slip faults, while the widespread stress rotations and systemic angular difference between upper crustal stress field and seismic anisotropy suggest that the decoupling of upper crustal deformation from middle‐lower crust by a series of detachments in the process of the crust thickening resulted from the obstruction of eastward expansion by Sichuan Basin.

Abstract:The NE margin of the Tibetan plateau influenced by multiple blocks, the regional dynamic model and lithospheric deformation characteristics are still controversial. In this study, 15 years data from permanent broadband seismic stations of the seismic network in the study area were adopted for splitting analyses of teleseismic phases XKS (SKS PKS and SKKS, shortly named XKS) using a grid search method, longer observations provided each station with a large number of clear seismic phases. The results show that the fast wave directions of XKS splitting are oriented toward WNW or NW, with reference to the direction of absolute plate motion, the lithospheric deformation is dominantly driven by the asthenosphere, although there are local variations. On both sides of the Haiyuan fault zone, there is a noticeable variation in lithospheric azimuthal anisotropy, further enhances the possibility that it is an extended boundary of the Tibetan plateau. Rheological anisotropic features on the western side of the Ordos block emphasize the obstruction of the rigid Ordos lithosphere. The crust and mantle seem to be coupled below the Qinling orogen, possibly related to the lateral movement of lithospheric material. However, in the Hexi corridor, there may be layered anisotropy within the lithosphere, which is inferred to relate to the subductions of the Alxa block and the Qilian orogen. The thicker lithosphere on the southern margin of the Alxa block may influence the asthenospheric flow. In addition, anisotropy results at the southeastern edge of the Alxa block and the Yinchuan graben reflect the possibility that the lithosphere may be characterized by a combination of horizontal and vertical movements. These results have greatly improved our understanding of the dynamic models and lithospheric deformation characteristics of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan plateau and adjacent areas.

Abstract:Abstract To investigate continental dynamics underneath the south‐central Tibetan plateau, which composes the Himalayan, Lhasa, and Qiangtang blocks, we have conducted comprehensive examinations of seismic azimuthal anisotropy in the crust using receiver functions (RFs) and crustal and mantle anisotropy using teleseismic shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis. In the Qiangtang block, the observed predominantly E‐W fast orientations from RF and SWS analyses with similar magnitude are interpreted as resulting from eastward crustal flow with minor contributions from the mantle. In the Lhasa block, the crustal anisotropy is approximately N‐S oriented, which is parallel to the strike of rift basins and southward crustal flow. Anisotropy revealed by SWS demonstrates a rotation from E‐W in the north to NE‐SW in the south, which can be interpreted as reflecting mantle flow field induced by the northward movement of the subducting Indian plate. The addition of PKS and SKKS measurements and extension of epicentral distance range to 171.8° for SWS analysis revealed dominantly strong E‐W oriented anisotropy in most parts of the Himalayan block, where most previous studies reported pervasively null measurements. The absence of azimuthal anisotropy is observed in two regions in the Himalayan block which is attributable to mantle upwelling through a previously identified slab window. A two‐layered anisotropy structure with different fast orientations for the upper and lower layers can be constrained in the southern Qiangtang and the vicinity of the Main Boundary Thrust.

Abstract:Abstract The southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau has undergone complex deformation since the Cenozoic, resulting in a high level of seismicity and seismic hazard. Knowledge about the seismic anisotropy provides important insight about the deformation mechanism and the regional seismotectonics beneath this tectonically active region. In this study, we conduct fullwave multi‐scale tomography to investigate the seismic anisotropy in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Broadband records at 111 permanent stations in the region from 470 teleseismic events are used to obtain 5,216 high‐quality SKS splitting intensity (SI) measurements, which are then inverted in conjunction with 3D sensitivity kernels to obtain an anisotropic model with multi‐scale resolution. Resolution tests show that our data set recovers anisotropy anomalies reasonably well on the scale of 1° × 1° horizontally and ∼100 km vertically. Our result suggests that in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau the deformation in the lithosphere and asthenosphere are decoupled. The anisotropy in the lithosphere varies both laterally and vertically as a result of dynamic interactions of neighboring blocks as well as lithospheric reactivation. The anisotropy in the asthenosphere largely follows the direction of regional absolute plate motion. The SKS splittings observed at the surface are shown to be consistent with the vertical integral of our depth‐dependent anisotropy model over lithospheric and asthenospheric depths.

Abstract:The Sanjiang lateral collision zone is a key region to understand the Tibetan Plateau's tectonic structure and the Tethys-Himalayan's tectonic evolution. Complex tectonic structures, intense crustal deformation, frequent seismicity, and abundant metal deposits are all present. With the seismic data recorded by a temporary array (SJ-Array) and permanent stations (Nov. 2018 ~ Dec. 2020), this paper adopts the S wave splitting technique to obtain the essential properties of upper crustal anisotropy. In the interested area, it is shown that the dominant polarization of the fast S wave is NNW, with a mean polarization direction of 167.9°. In addition, the study area can be divided into three subzones from the west to the east: A, B, and C, according to the various mean polarizations varying from NNW, NS to NNE. The mean normalized time delay between the two split S waves is 4.0 ms/km, and the range of time delay is from 2.0 to 6.3 ms/km. The largest time delay is located at the east side of the western boundary of the Sichuan-Yunnan rhombus block. Furthermore, there is a strip area of strong anisotropy stretching along the western segment of the Lijiang-Xiaojinhe fault. These all demonstrate the local tectonic differences and indicate that the crustal structure may be strongly controlled by the fault and block boundary strike.

Abstract:As one of the world’s most active intracontinental mountain belts, Tien Shan has posed questions for researchers regarding the formation of different tectonic units and active shallow seismicity. Here, we used a huge data set comprising of 7094 earthquakes from local, regional and teleseismic seismic stations. We used waveform modeling and multi-scale double-difference earthquake relocation technique to better constrain the source parameters of the earthquakes. The new set of events provided us with better initial earthquake locations for further tomographic investigation. We found that reverse-faulting earthquakes dominate the whole study area while the fault plane solutions for earthquakes beneath the northwestern Tarim Basin and the Main Pamir Thrust are diverse. There is a low-velocity anomaly beneath Bashkaingdy at depth of 80 km, and high-velocity anomalies beneath central Tien Shan at shallower depths. These observations are the keys to understand the mechanism of Tien Shan’s formation because of Tarim Basin northward and Kazakh Shield’s southward subduction in the south and north respectively. Velocities beneath western Tien Shan are relatively high. We thus infer that the Western Tien Shan is relatively less deformed than the eastern Tien Shan primarily due to a relatively brittle mantle.

Abstract:The collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, to the east of the eastern Himalayan syntaxes, forms the Sanjiang lateral collision zone in the southeast (SE) margin of the Tibetan Plateau, where there are intense crustal deformation, active faults, earthquakes, as well as a metallogenic belt. Given the lack of adequate seismic data, shear‐wave splitting (SWS) in this area has not been studied. With seismic data from a temporary seismic linear array (the SL Array), as well as permanent seismic stations, this paper adopts the identification on microseismic event (IMSE) to pick more events and obtains SWS parameters from local earthquakes. From the west to the east, the study area can be divided into three subzones. The "fast" polarization (i.e. the polarization of the fast shear‐wave) varies gradually from NNW to NS to NNE in these three subzones. The time delay of the slow shear‐wave (i.e. the time difference between the two split shear‐waves) also increases in the same direction, indicating the presence of seismic anisotropy above 25 km in the crust. Both SWS parameters are closely related to stress, faults and tectonics. The scatter and the "dual" (i.e. two) dominant orientations of the fast polarizations at several stations indicate strong distortions caused by nearby faults or deep tectonics. The anisotropic parameters are found to be related to some degree to the metallogenic belt. It is worth to further analyze the link between the anisotropic pattern and the metallogenic area, which suggests that SWS could be applied to study metallogeny. This paper demonstrates that the identification on microseismic event is a useful tool in detecting SWS details and exploring its tectonic implications.This article is protected by copyright.
