Abstract:Fold-and-thrust belts (FTBs) develop widely in and around active orogenic belts on Earth. With the accumulation of structural shortening, thrust-related folds can grow by increasing their amplitudes and lengths, providing insights into the structural evolution of FTBs. Investigations of fold growth patterns and landscape responses through time and space have important implications for hydrocarbon exploration and geo-hazard assessment. Evidence for lateral fold propagation (i.e., increase in length) usually comes from geochronological constraints based on differences in onset timings along strike. However, these traditional methods are time consuming and economically costly. Alternatively, previous studies have proposed the use of geomorphic features to investigate the lateral fold propagation, including spatial variations in the patterns and densities of river channels, the configuration of the topographic profile along the fold crest, and the occurrence of wind gaps. However, such analyses are based on morphological features of present-day landscapes, which still need process-based validations. Here, we conduct a series of landscape evolution models to reproduce fold growth and their associated geomorphic adjustments. Our results show that deflected rivers and inflected fold-crest elevation profile with decreasing gradient are reliable evidence of lateral fold propagation. The location of propagation is in accordance with the distribution of crest-profile slope breaks and the position where river deflection began. Then, we apply these findings to two natural examples located at the deformation fronts of the Tian Shan (NW China). Results suggest that 1) the Kashi anticline has experienced lateral propagation both westwards and eastwards; and 2) that the Yaken anticline has experienced accelerated tectonic uplift as well as eastwards propagation. These findings are supported by the constraints from geochronological dating and quantitative structural analysis. Future work that integrates folding mechanisms may provide novel insights into landscape response to complex deformation in active FTBs.
Improved Geometric Model of Extensional Fault-Bend Folding

Abstract:Extensional fault-bend folds, also called rollovers, are one of the most common structures in extensional settings. Numerous studies have shown that oblique simple shear is the most appropriate mechanism for quantitative modeling of geometric relations between normal faults and the strata in their hanging walls. However, the oblique simple shear has a rather serious issue derived from the shear direction, particularly above convex bends. We use geometric and experimental methods to study the deformation of extensional fault-bend folds on convex bends. The results indicate that whether the fault bends are concave or convex, the shear direction of the hanging wall dips toward the main fault. On this basis, we improve the previous geometric model by changing the shear direction above the convex bends. To illustrate basin history, our model highlights the importance of the outer limit of folding instead of the growth axial. Moreover, we propose a new expression for the expansion index that is applicable to the condition of no deposition on the footwall. This model is validated by modeling a natural structure of the East China Sea Basin.
A Geometric Model of Faulted Detachment Folding with Pure Shear and Its Application in the Tarim Basin, NW China

Abstract:We present an improved geometric model of faulted detachment folding with pure shear that is characterized by core thickening and a ramp-discordant backlimb. The model includes a two-stage evolution: 1) detachment folding involving pure shear with fixed hinges, and 2) faulted detachment folding, in which the core of anticline thrusts above a break-through fault in forelimb by limb rotation. The growth strata patterns of the model are also discussed with respect to factors such as limb rotation, tectonic uplift rate, and sedimentation rate. A thrust-related fold, called a TBE thrust fold, in the Tarim Basin in NW China, is analyzed as an example of the theoretical model. The result indicates that the TBE thrust fold has undergone a two-stage evolution with shortening of a few hundred meters. Both the theoretical model and the actual example indicate that the shortening in the detachment folding stage takes up a large proportion of the total shortening. The structural restoration of the TBE thrust fold also provides new evidence that the formation of a series of thin-skinned structures in the SE Tarim Basin initiated in the Late Ordovician. The model may be applicable to low-amplitude faulted detachment folds.

Abstract:Understanding the interplay among fault slip, fold growth, and earthquakes is crucial for assessing earthquake risk and deciphering the relationship between long-term and short-term deformation in fold-thrust belts. While fault-related folding theories have dominated previous studies, the role of the buckling process—characterized by bed-parallel contraction—in seismicity and fold development has been underreported. Herein, we attempt to address this issue through an examination of the 28 March 2019 M5.0 Mangya earthquake in the Shizigou anticline, western Qaidam Basin (northern Tibetan Plateau), based on 3-D seismic imaging data, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) analysis, and borehole loggings. We show that this earthquake was not caused by slip along known faults, but by interbed slip due to buckling in the limb of the anticline, demonstrating for the first time that buckling could result in moderate earthquakes. The buckling process not only leads to coseismic uplift deviating from the folding crest induced by slip on the underlying fault, but also modulates the long-term geometric growth of the Shizigou anticline. Our findings underscore the significance of the buckling process in contributing to short-term coseismic slip and long-term fold growth in active fold-thrust belts.
Deformational in Curved Fold-and-thrust Belts: As a Function of Backstop Shape and Basal Friction: Insights from Analogue Modeling and Application to the Pamir Salient, Hindu Kush Region

Abstract:Curved fold-and-thrust belt (CFTB) is a common structural phenomenon in orogenic belts and accretionary wedges, which has attracted the attention of several geologists. However, the formation mechanism of CFTB, particularly the cause of Pamir salient, has been greatly controversial. Therefore, based on previous studies, CFTB was studied by 12 groups of analogue modeling using the different shapes of the backstop and variable basal friction properties, and different compression velocities. The results show that the formation of CFTB is closely associated with the initial geometric characteristics of CFTB, the strength of the basal ductile layer, and the influence of lateral friction. Although the variation in backstop geometries is dominated by the pure Coulomb wedge, CFTB with completely different structural styles can form because of different boundary shapes. The CFTB formed by lower basement friction strength has a larger deformation range, and the CFTB formed by high strength of basal friction, which is narrow, has a high uplift amplitude, forming a tensile structure around its uplift. A high compressional rate forms the higher arc curvature, and a lower compressional rate forms the smaller arc curvature. Models of a brittle basement with triangular backstop and models with ductile basement and boundary parallel to the compression direction may provide a more reliable explanation for the formation of the forward thrust, backward thrust, and symmetrical pop-up structures of the Pamir salient and its structural vergence from south to north. This study further reveals that initial boundary geometry, stratigraphic structure, and rheology with a difference in brittle and ductile layers will yield more complex structural styles and different kinematic characteristics.
Oblique Thrusting and Strain Partitioning in the Longmen Shan Fold‐and‐Thrust Belt, Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Eastern Tibet is an important example of oblique convergence and associated strain partitioning, as suggested by recent 2‐D and 3‐D structural interpretations, yet the nature and evolution of oblique strain partitioning of this region remain poorly known. Here we use seismic reflection profiles, borehole data, and field investigations in the Longmen Shan piedmont to determine the subsurface structural architecture, and we observe several nearly N‐S striking thrusts and reactivation of NE striking preexisting faults. We interpret that this behavior is due to a regional principal compressional stress oriented in the E‐W direction, oblique to the NE striking Longmen Shan. Using the records of fault activity and related Late Pliocene and Quaternary foreland sediments and growth strata, as well as the coseismic rupture of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, we demonstrate that the Longmen Shan has experienced E‐W crustal shortening and oblique motion since ~5–2 Ma. We present two strain partitioning models arising from oblique thrusting in eastern Tibet and suggest that the eastward extrusion from Tibet is mainly accommodated on the strike‐slip Longriba fault and the dip‐slip Longmen Shan‐Min Shan fault zones. These results enhance our understanding of the tectonic relationship between the Songpan‐Ganzi terrane and the Sichuan basin and provide additional constraints for studies of the geodynamic response of eastern Tibet to the ongoing India‐Eurasia collision.
Structural Deformation of Fold-Thrust Belt in the North Margin of Kashi,Southern Tien Shan

Abstract:The structural and deformational features of fold-thrust belt in the north margin of Kashi,southern Tien Shan were disclosed based on various data such as 2D seismic profile and field geologic survey.The results show that the fold-thrust belt can be divided into several rows of anticlines,including Kaboketuoer-Wenguer,Tuopa-Kangxiweier,Atushi and Kashi on plane,and the development of Atushi anticlines and its north side are controlled by the activity of the thrust system originated along the middle Cambrian Awatage group from north to south.The fold-thrust belt can be divided into two different spatial levels:the shallow tectonic is a large scale imbricate thrust system,the detachment surface is uplifted from Cambrian system to Neogene system;the deep structure is a buried duplex structure system,the faults in floor and roof are located at gypsic horizon in Cambrian and Neogene system respectively.Based on the structural deformation analyzing and balanced section technology,the distribution of each anticlinal belts and the structure style of the low and deep thrust systems are confirmed.In this area the distance is shortened by 32.64-49.1 km from north to south since Pliocene with the scalage of 40.5%-50.51%,and its average crustal shortening rate is 9.11-13.71 mm/a.

Abstract:The foreland fold-and-thrust belts develop much more complex imbricate structures that continue to offer substantial and rich challenges. Quilitake anticline in Kuqa thrust belt and Bapanshuime anticline in Keping thrust belt along the piedmonts of the southem Tianshan are such complex imbricate folds. In order to determine the geometry and kinematics of these two folds, we present the models of the folds that are constructed using dipping and strike data of surface strata, 2-D seismic reflection profiles, and well drilling logging data. The concepts and methods of fault-related folding are used in our research which are helpful to understand the imbricate thrusts and folds in quantitative details.
Late Cenozoic Active Fold-and-Thrust Belts in the Southern and Northern Flanks of Tianshan

Abstract:The Tianshan Mountain range related to the India-Eurasia collision has been considered as an ideal laboratory to understand the dynamic processes responsible for intracontinental mountain building. The active fold-and-thrust beltsin its both flanks offer an exceptional opportunity to study the processes of growth folding above imbricate thrust systems and their interaction with sedimentation and displacement, which are emphasized more and more by the worldwide neotectonic community. In order to present a detailed and quantitative analysis of the timing, rates and process of deformationon these active fold-and-thrust belts, depth-converted seismic reflection profiles, wells, together with detailed surface structural measurements, have been usedto construct balanced cross-sections in the Kuqa river and Jingou-Anjihai river areas, located in the southern and northern piedmonts of Tianshan respectively. Growth strata and growth unconformitiesanalysis correlated to the available magnetostratigraphyindicates actively deforming structuresin both areasmay have mainly developedsince the early Pliocene (4.2~5 Ma). In Kuqa river cross-section, the displacements on three thrust faults, estimatedby geometric analysis,vary from 5.7 km to 6.3 km, and to 18 km, which reveals an acceleration of deformation since the Oligocene.Based on these measurements, we infer a long-term (23Ma) shortening rate of the Kuqa thrust-and-fold belt of about 1.3 mm/a, and the short-term (4.2~5 Ma)shortening rate of about 3.6 mm/a.In the Jingou-Anjihai river cross-section, the total displacementon thrust faults in deep wedges near the mountain front is estimated to be about 16.9 km, in which only 6 km is transferredto the Huo'erguoshi anticline, and has decreased to 0.22~0.28 km near the Anjihai anticline. Based on these measurements, we infer the shortening rate of the upper and lower structural layers of about 2.6~3.1 mm/aand 3.8~4.5 mm/a, respectively, and the deep structural wedges near the mountain front, Huo'erguoshi deep anticline and Anjihai anticline in the lower structural layer of about 3.9~4.6 mm/a, 1.2~1.4 mm/aand 0.04~0.38 mm/a, respectively.
Lateral Structural Variations and Drainage Response along the Misikantage Anticline in the Western Kuqa Fold-and-thrust Belt, Southern Tianshan, NW China

Abstract:The Cenozoic Kuqa fold-and-thrust belt (KFTB) along the southern piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains (NW China) provides excellent chances for investigating active deformation and its controls on landscape topography. In contrast to the well-imaged eastern KFTB, the structural deformation in the western part complicated by the development of early-stage salt structures still has not been well investigated. On the basis of seismic reflection profiles, well data and surface geology, combined with previously determined paleomagnetic ages, this study focuses on the deformation style, onset and average shortening rate of the Misikantage anticline in the western KFTB. Together with the morphometric analysis of satellite images and digital elevation models (DEMs), we have demonstrated that: 1) the Misikantage anticline is an asymmetric detachment fold, where the fold geometry, amounts of shortening, outcropping strata and channel network patterns vary along strike; 2) syntectonic growth strata recognized from seismic profiles combined with paleomagnetic ages indicate that the folding started at ~2.4Ma and resulted in ~0.3–0.9km of shortening, yielding an average shortening rate of ~0.12–0.38mm/yr; 3) the landscape topography and drainage networks markedly change in response to lateral structural variations. These findings would provide a basis for further comparisons of compressional structures between the eastern and western KFTB, which are also helpful in better understanding active folding in fold-and-thrust belts particularly where thick salt is involved in deformation.
Effects of Fault Slip Distribution on the Geometry and Kinematics of the Southern Junggar Fold-and-thrust Belt, Northern Tian Shan

Abstract:At the foreland edge of fold-and-thrust belts (FTBs), tectonic shortening could either be accommodated by thick-skinned faulting and/or structural wedges developed near range-fronts, or be transferred along detachment layers further into basins, forming thin-skinned structures. Although the geometry and kinematics of each structure have been well-investigated, studies that characterize slip distribution along a specific fault as well as the effects of variations in magnitude of fault displacement on the development of fault-related folds are still lacking. In this study, we present a case study of the southern Junggar Thrust (SJT), a seismically-active fault developed in the southern Junggar FTB, northern Tian Shan with an overall vergence to the north. The results of structural interpretations of seismic reflection profiles combined with the age constraints provided by previous magnetostratigraphic studies demonstrate that: 1) The kinematics of the SJT vary along strike from purely structural wedging to classical fault-bend folding. Besides these end-member models, intermediate cases exist between them, in which fault slip is partitioned by two-stage structural deformation, i.e., fault-bend folding subsequent to structural wedging at the range front. As a result, part of the displacement is transferred northward, forming the Tugulu anticline. 2) Along-strike variations in displacement along the Tugulu fault (frontal fault of the SJT) also affect the geometry and kinematics of the Tugulu anticline, varying from detachment folding, trishear fault-propagation folding with a pure-shear fault-bend folding back-limb, and classical trishear fault-propagation folding to fault-bend folding with increasing displacement. 3) The SJT has an average Quaternary slip rate of 3.9 +/- 0.4 mm/yr, serving as a principal structure accommodating tectonic shortening in the southern Junggar FTB. The results of this study are helpful for seismic hazard assessments of the study area, which may also shed light on structural evolution of fault-related folds in other FTBs.
Structural Styles and Evolution of a Thin-Skinned Fold-and-thrust Belt with Multiple Detachments in the Eastern Sichuan Basin, South China

Abstract:The structural deformation of the eastern Sichuan Basin, South China, is characterized by a thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belt with exposed, approximately parallel narrow anticlines and wide synclines. A 196-km long regional cross section has been constructed parallel to the shortening direction to analyze structural styles and evolution of the fold-thrust belt. The stratigraphic succession is composed of competent layers separated by three main incompetent layers which act as detachments. The basal detachment, the Cambrian evaporites, played a dominant role in the deformation; the middle and top detachments accommodated the displacement during deformation. Structural styles are dominated by faulted detachment folds with the breakthroughs of the fore- and/or backlimbs. Balanced restoration shows that the shortening between basal and top detachments is about 26 km with the shortening ratio of 12.4-18.6%. Integrated analyses of kinematics and balanced restoration reveal the evolution succession of kink bands, detachment folds, and faulted detachment folds. Kink bands initiated and evolved into detachment folds above the basal detachment as the shortening took place; with progressive shortening the back- and/or forelimbs of these folds developed thrusts.
Influence of Regional Erosion and Sedimentary Loading on Fault Activities in Active Fold-Thrust Belts: Insights From Discrete Element Simulation and the Southern and Central Longmen Shan Fold-Thrust Belt

Abstract:Four groups of discrete element models (DEMs) were set-up to simulate and analyze the influence of regional erosion and sedimentary loading on the formation and spatial-temporal evolution of faults in the southern and central Longmen Shan (LMS) active fold-thrust belt. The interior characteristics of faults in the southern and central LMS fold-thrust belt were also evaluated during the interaction of tectonic processes and surface processes according to the stress-strain analysis from DEM results. The results showed that synkinematic erosion promoted the reactivation of pre-existing faults in thrust wedges and also retarded the formation and development of new incipient faults in the pre-wedge regions. Meanwhile, synkinematic sedimentation also delayed the development of new incipient faults in the pre-wedge regions by promoting the development of thrust faults in the front of thrust wedges, causing these thrust wedges in supercritical stages with relatively narrow wedge lengths. According to these DEM results, we infer that: 1) The characteristics of erosion and sedimentation in the central and southern LMS have important influences on the activities of large faults which are extended into the deep detachment layer; 2) Besides differential erosion, the differential sedimentary loading may also be one of the important factors for the along-strike differential evolution of the LMS fold-thrust belt. This kind of differential deposition may lead to differential fault activity and uplift in the interior thrust wedge and pre-wedge region in the central and southern LMS; 3) Compared to the northern LMS, the central LMS and southern LMS is more conducive to the occurrence of earthquakes, because of synkinematic sedimentation (such as the growth of Chengdu plain) has a greater blocking effect on the stress propagation and strain convergence on the fault planes of front faults of an active thrust wedge.
Active Bending‐Moment Faulting: Geomorphic Expression, Controlling Conditions, Accommodation of Fold Deformation

Abstract:Bending-moment faults and flexural-slip faults (FSFs), as two basic fault styles due to bending-related tangential longitudinal strain, extensively and prominently crop out as surface scarps in the Pamir-western Kunlun and southern Tian Shan regions, northwestern China. Characteristic geomorphic expression, favorable formation conditions, and the role in folding accommodation of active FSFs have been systematically summarized in our recent studies. Here we investigate similar properties for well-developed bending-moment normal fault (BMnF) scarps at four sites. Our study concludes the following: (i) BMnF scarps are relatively sinuous compared to FSF scarps and probably trend obliquely to the fold hinge. A group of BMnF scarps can delineate a single asymmetric graben or create grabens alternating with horsts. (ii) BMnF scarps primarily overlie poorly-layered conglomerates. The fold's interlimb angle can range from 160 degrees to <40 degrees, and the folding kinematics can vary from active-hinge migration to fixed-hinge rotation. (iii) The fault-zone width, fault spacing, and efficiency in folding accommodation significantly decrease with (a) thinner conglomerate beds, (b) a smaller interlimb angle, and (c) the transition of the hinge from migrated to fixed. (iv) Different bed lithologies and fold geometries beneath the surface account for the predominance of BMnF scarps on the western Kunlun piedmont and FSF scarps in the Pamir-Tian Shan convergent zone. (v) Presence of BMnF scarps on the western Kunlun piedmont indicates that 4km of fault slip is transferred northward along a detachment at the base of the Cenozoic and is ultimately absorbed by the Mazatagh Thrust in the Tarim Basin. Abstract:Structural deformation of fold-and-thrust belts is influenced by the properties of décollements (number, rheology, thickness, etc.), the presence of inherited structures in the basement as well as the amount of syntectonic sedimentation, among others. Although the effect of each of these parameters has been well constrained with a series of numerical and experimental works in the literature, few sandbox models comprehensively consider all these parameters together, and particularly investigate the effect of their lateral variation. In this context, we carried out several 3-D sandbox models to investigate the effect of increasing syntectonic sedimentation rate on kinematic evolution of fold‐and‐thrust systems which contain a basal brittle detachment layer and a shallow detachment layer that changed from a brittle to a viscous domain along the mountain strike. The influence of different basement width structures, affecting the kinematics and geometry of the interbedded viscous décollement, has been also tested.Results indicate that the rate of syntectonic sedimentation exerts a first-order control on the kinematic evolution of fold‐and‐thrust belts since increasing syntectonic sedimentation rate stops (in the brittle domain) or delays (in the viscous domain) the propagation of deformation towards the foreland. Moreover, syntectonic sedimentation prohibits the propagation of deformation in the deep décollement level due to the modification of the taper angle. Structural evolution of the transfer zone in between the brittle and viscous domain is also affected since if becomes narrower and more orthogonal to the mountain front at higher sedimentation rates. Specifically, in the brittle domain, the fault dip angle increases with the increase in syn-sedimentation rate and its cross-sectional geometry becomes straighter. In the viscous domain, syntectonic sedimentation affects the partitioning of deformation with development of long-lived and complex 3-D salt structures near the hinterland (such as squeezed diapirs, salt welds and salt tongue), whereas frontal structure becomes more cylindrical. Toward the hinterland, syntectonic sedimentation increases backthrust activity, which becomes increasingly different between the brittle and viscous domain. For instance, the increase in backthrust displacement in the ductile domain is greater than the one in the brittle domain. About the basement high, our study reveals that it has a strong controlling effect on the viscous domain, dominating the development of structural belt on the top of the basement high and promoting the propagation of deformation front to the pinch-out of the salt layer. Besides, syntectonic sedimentation simplifies the structural style between the basement high and the hinterland. It strengthens the structural influence of the transfer zone, which localizes into a single strike-slip transfer fault which increases the frontal fault displacement.Our experimental results are compared with structures in the Wushi-Kuqa fold-and-thrust belts in Southern Tianshan (Central Asia) and help better understanding interaction between syntectonic sedimentation, décollement properties and basement configuration.
GEOMETRY AND KINEMATICS OF THE KUQA FOLD-AND-THRUST BELT IN THE SOUTHERN TIANSHAN

Abstract:The Tianshan was one of the largest and the most active intracontinental mountain ranges in the world. The active fold-and-thrust belts flanked both sides of the mountains. The Kuqa fold-and-thrust belt of the southern Tianshan extended for 350 km along strike and reached a maximum width at 80 ∼ 100 km. Using detailed surface geology surveys, seismic reflection profiles and satellite images, this paper describes a profile section across the central part, the Kuqa river area, of the Kuqa belt. The Kuqa fold-and-thrust belt was divided into four structural units, which were, in southward order, the North Linear Anticline Zone, the Keyi Thrust Zone, the Quilitake Anticline Zone and the Yaken Anticline Zone. The east-west trending fault-related folds should be basic deformation styles of the belt. The deformation was propagated from the north to the south in the belt. The unconformity between the Miocene Jidike Formation and the Paleogene Sueyi Formation in the north region of the belt implied that the timing of deformation might be in the pre-Miocene on the North Linear Anticline Zone and the Keyi Thrust Zone. The growth strata in the south region of the belt indicated the syntectonic sedimentary strata of the Yaken Anticline. Combining with the magnetostratigraphic sections on the both sides of the East Quilitake Anticline, the timing of deformation was represented in Early Pliocene (5.2 ± 0.2 Ma) on the Quilitake Anticline Zone and the Yaken Anticline Zone, and the slip rate of the major thrust of the Quilitake Anticline Zone being 1.5 mm/a in average since Early Pliocene.
Numerical Constraints on Folding and Thrusting in Jiudong Basin: Implication for the Northeastward Growth of Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Under regional tectonic shortening in the northern margin of Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, the fold-and-thrust belts composed of four thrust faults (North Qilian-Shan, North Yumu-Shan, South Heli-Shan, and North Jintanan-Shan) formed from southwest to northeast discontinuously sequentially in the Jiudong Basin area during Late Cenozoic. Meanwhile, the North Qilian-Shan, Yumu-Shan, and Heli-Shan ranges were formed successively, as the Earth's local surface was unequally uplifted. In this study, based on geological and geophysical observations, a simple two-dimensional elastic-plastic numerical finite element method model for a southwest-northeast section in Jiudong Basin is successfully established to simulate the spatiotemporal evolution of the local fold-and-thrust belts. Results show that the computed equivalent plastic strain concentration zones and the four observed thrust faults are consistently correlated in spatial position orientation and time sequence. The simulated upper-surface deformation is congruent with the observed topographic peaks and uplift sequences of the North Qilian-Shan, Yumu-Shan, and Heli-Shan ranges. This study provides a geodynamic basis for understanding the growth mechanism of the northern margin of Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau under tectonic horizontal shortening. Also, we provide a thorough sensitivity analysis for the model parameters of this particular geologic setting. Our sensitivity simulations, considering systematic case variations about the regional geometrical-material parameters, suggest the manifestation of three different possible evolution patterns of fold-and-thrust belts for a wedge above a decollement layer, with wedge plastic deformation migrating from 1) thick to thin end (well-known), 2) thin to thick end, and 3) both ends to middle. Finally, our results suggest that in this region, further growth of mountain ranges is expected to continue in the future.

The Effect of Overburden Thickness on Deformation Mechanisms in the Keping Fold-Thrust Belt, Southwestern Chinese Tian Shan Mountains: Insights from Analogue Modeling

Abstract:The structural evolution of the Keping fold-thrust belt in the South Chinese Tian Shan, NW China is poorly understood. Here, we present the results of a series of scaled sandbox models based on the structural architecture of the Keping fold-thrust belt in our investigation of the effect of overburden thickness on deformation mechanisms in fold-thrust belts. These models simulated the evolution of the Keping fold-thrust belt, where the western segment was shortened with a thicker overburden relative to the eastern segment. Model results confirm that fewer thrust faults with wider spacing develop in thicker cover units, whereas more thrust faults with narrower spacing develop in thinner cover units. Transfer zones also form as a result of faster and farther propagation in a segment with thicker overburden, consistent with the prediction of the critical taper theory. Our modeling further shows that due to the episodic accretion of thrust wedges and non-simultaneous formation of thrust faults, the deformation front may locally propagate farther in the thinner overburden. Alternatively, there may not be so much difference between two parts of sand layers with different thicknesses, an observation that is inconsistent with the theoretical prediction. The similarities between the model and real geological observations suggest that the variations in the overburden thicknesses across the Piqiang Fault transfer zone strongly influenced the development of the structural architecture of the Keping fold-thrust belt. They further indicate that the growth of fold-thrust belts in nature is episodic, and that the propagation of deformation front cannot be simply predicted by the critical taper theory. The overburden thickness variations across the Piqiang Fault transfer zone were produced by high angle reverse faulting along the pre-existing Piqiang-Selibuya Fault during the late Pliocene and associated crustal uplift and erosion of the hanging wall strata.
Influence of Surface Processes on Strain Localization and Seismic Activity in the Longmen Shan Fold-and-Thrust Belt: Insights from Discrete-Element Modeling

Abstract:We investigated interactions between structural deformation and surface processes in the Longmen Shan fold-and-thrust belt and the adjacent western Sichuan foreland basin (WSFB) in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The discrete-element modeling (DEM) method was used to study the influences of the various mechanical properties of the detachments and syn-tectonic erosion/deposition on the structural evolution of the Longmen Shan and WSFB. DEM simulations demonstrated two stages of surface processes during the Late Cenozoic profoundly influenced thrusting sequences and strain localization in the hinterland and foreland portions of the Longmen Shan. Models indicate that the fold-and-thrust belt lacking surface processes propagate in a forward-breaking manner, whereas those with surface processes develop following an out-of-sequence thrusting pattern. We infer that large-scale erosion propagation from the Sichuan Basin westward to the Tibetan Plateau since Late Cenozoic caused the Longmen Shan hinterland to reach a subcritical wedge state. Tectonic activity retreats to the edge of Plateau, enhancing the rapid uplift of the Longmen Shan and inhibiting the propagation of substantial shortening deformation to the foreland basin. The foreland thrust belt slides stably along the shallow detachment, causing the initiation and growth of the Longquan fault in the leading front. These results explain why both the Longmen Shan hinterland and the western Sichuan foreland thrust belts are currently in a state of simultaneous seismic activity. Our findings offer important implications regarding the seismic potentials of other fold-and-thrust belts that interact with dynamic surface processes.
