Abstract:The Qaidam Basin is the largest sedimentary basin within the Tibetan Plateau, with up to ∼15-km-thick deposits accumulated in the Cenozoic. Understanding how it deformed in response to the far-field effects of India-Eurasia collision is critical to improving our knowledge of the mechanism underlying northward plateau growth. Unlike typical compressional basins, where upper-crustal deformation concentrates at their margins, the Qaidam Basin features the development of many NW- to WNW-striking folds across the entire basin. Why crustal shortening occurred in the interior of Qaidam Basin, ∼100 km away from the margins, together with the underground geometries beneath these folds, remains unknown. Herein, based on newly acquired three- and two-dimensional (3-D and 2-D) seismic reflection data, borehole logging, and scaled physical analog modeling, we investigated the geometries, kinematics, and formation mechanisms of the folds within the interior of Qaidam Basin. For the first time, we reveal three local weak layers in the Lulehe, Upper Xiaganchaigou, and Shangyoushashan Formations, respectively. They consist mainly of mudstone intercalated with evaporites and limestones, and they have different spatial distributions that are likely confined by major faults and folds. These mechanically weak layers became locally thickened or thinned in response to tectonic loading and/or facilitated detachment slip to form many décollement folds that were observed at the surface. The shallow deformation above the weak layers is largely decoupled from underlying basement-involved faulting and folding, which mostly terminate upward in these weak layers. Analog modeling results suggest that the lowermost and widely distributed décollement layer in the Lulehe Formation likely facilitated long-distance rapid propagation of deformation into the basin interior. In sum, our study highlights the significance of multiple weak layers during Cenozoic deformation in the Qaidam Basin interior.

Abstract:The Qaidam Basin is located in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and provides an excellent field laboratory in understanding the history and mechanism of the plateau growth. It deformed widely over the northwest during the Cenozoic but with little thrust loading along the margins, where no foreland depression is observed. Based on satellite images, seismic and borehole data, we investigated the structural deformation pattern (including the structural style and timing of deformation) and its formation mechanism within the northwestern Qaidam Basin during the Cenozoic era. Mapping of surface geology shows that the modern Qaidam Basin is characterized by five SE-trending anticlinal belts. Each belt consists of several right-step en echelon anticlines with plenty of normal and strike-slip faults crossing the crests. Those anticlines are generally dominated by double fault systems at different depths: an upper thrust fault system, controlling the anticlines identified on the surface and a lower dextral transpressional fault system characterized by typical flower structures. They are separated by weak layers in the upper Xiaganchaigou or the Shangganchaigou formations. The upper system yields shortening strain 2–5 times larger than that of the lower system and the additional strain is interpreted to be accommodated by hinge-parallel elongation in the upper system. Growth strata indicate that deformation within the Qaidam Basin initiated in the middle Miocene (~15Ma) and accelerated in the late Miocene (~8Ma). A simple Riedel-P-Shear model is used to explain the deformation mechanism within the northwestern Qaidam Basin.
Oblique Thrusting and Strain Partitioning in the Longmen Shan Fold‐and‐Thrust Belt, Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Eastern Tibet is an important example of oblique convergence and associated strain partitioning, as suggested by recent 2‐D and 3‐D structural interpretations, yet the nature and evolution of oblique strain partitioning of this region remain poorly known. Here we use seismic reflection profiles, borehole data, and field investigations in the Longmen Shan piedmont to determine the subsurface structural architecture, and we observe several nearly N‐S striking thrusts and reactivation of NE striking preexisting faults. We interpret that this behavior is due to a regional principal compressional stress oriented in the E‐W direction, oblique to the NE striking Longmen Shan. Using the records of fault activity and related Late Pliocene and Quaternary foreland sediments and growth strata, as well as the coseismic rupture of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, we demonstrate that the Longmen Shan has experienced E‐W crustal shortening and oblique motion since ~5–2 Ma. We present two strain partitioning models arising from oblique thrusting in eastern Tibet and suggest that the eastward extrusion from Tibet is mainly accommodated on the strike‐slip Longriba fault and the dip‐slip Longmen Shan‐Min Shan fault zones. These results enhance our understanding of the tectonic relationship between the Songpan‐Ganzi terrane and the Sichuan basin and provide additional constraints for studies of the geodynamic response of eastern Tibet to the ongoing India‐Eurasia collision.

Abstract:Competing geodynamic models, such as rigid-block extrusion, continuous deformation, and the mid-lower crustal flow, have been proposed to describe the growth and expansion of eastern Tibet. However, the dynamic processes responsible for plateau evolution and deformation remain poorly understood partly due to resolution limitations of previous models of lithospheric structure. On the basis of joint inversion of Rayleigh wave dispersion and receiver functions using data from a newly deployed seismic array, we have obtained a high-resolution 3D image that reveals the distribution of low-velocity zones (LVZs) with unprecedented clarity. The prominent feature of our model is two low-velocity channels that bound major strike-slip faults in SE Tibet and wrap around the Eastern Himalaya Syntaxis, consistent with the clockwise movement of crustal material in this region. Most large earthquakes in this region occurred in the boundaries of the LVZs. We propose that ductile flow within these channels, in addition to shear motion along strike-slip faults, played a significant role in accommodating intensive lithospheric deformation during the eastward expansion of Tibet in the Cenozoic.
Structural Coupling Between the Qiman Tagh and the Qaidam Basin, Northern Tibetan Plateau: A Perspective From the Yingxiong Range by Integrating Field Mapping, Seismic Imaging, and Analogue Modeling

Abstract:The Qiman Tagh and the Qaidam Basin within the northern Tibetan Plateau are contrasting in geomorphological, geological, and geophysical features. The Yingxiong Range is the largest anticlinal belt in the SW Qaidam Basin and holds a key in understanding the relationship between the above two tectonic units. Herein, we investigated the geometry, shortening, timing and mechanism of the structural deformation across the Yingxiong Range by integrating field mapping, interpretation of 3-D/2-D seismic reflection data and analogue modeling. The structural interpretation demonstrates that the Yingxiong Range is primarily controlled by NE-directed basement-involved reverse faults. These faults likely sole into a decollement layer at depth of similar to 15 km through the excess area-depth analysis. This pattern is complicated by the development of a local salt layer that decouples the deformation of underlying and overlying strata, as indicated by analogue modeling. Deformation initially occurred at similar to 8.1 Ma but strengthened at similar to 2.5 Ma, with total shortening up to similar to 5 km in the NW part but decreasing to <2 km to the SE. Together with published results, our findings revealed an NE-directed thrust system involving the Qiman Tagh and the SW Qaidam Basin, with the Yingxiong Range as the front of this system. We further inferred that this NE-directed thrust system in the upper crust, together with the previously identified SW-directed deep reverse fault offsetting the Moho, may form a southwestward tapering tectonic wedge, which likely results from the heterogeneity of lithospheric mantle between the Qaidam Basin and the Qiman Tagh-East Kunlun Shan.
Basement Controls on Deformation During Oblique Convergence: Transpressive Structures in the Western Qaidam Basin, Northern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Qaidam Basin, especially its western part, is characterized by numerous northwest-trending folds and faults. Understanding the style and formation mechanism of these structures is crucial for unravelling the deformation of the Qaidam Basin and the broader tectonics of the northern part of the Tibetan Plateau. Based on seismic data, we reconstruct the structural framework of the central part of the western Qaidam Basin, and find that: (1) the structures in this area display positive flower geometries in two-dimensional (2D) seismic profiles and helicoidal shapes in 3D space; (2) these positive flower structures began to develop during the middle to late Miocene (15-8 Ma); and (3) these positive flower structures are controlled by left-lateral basement faults and formed in a random temporal sequence. The left-lateral features represent the strike-slip component of distributed deformation, consistent with published global positioning system and seismicity data for oblique convergence across the north of the Tibetan Plateau. Collectively, they perform the same role as the discrete Haiyuan, Kunlun, and Altyn Tagh faults in adjacent areas.

Abstract:Abstract The Qaidam basin, bounded by the Altyn Tagh fault in the north, is located in the northeast of the Tibet plateau, and it has important implications for understanding the history and mechanism of Tibetan plateau formation during the Cenozoic Indo-Eurasia collision. In this study, we constructed the main geological structures and surfaces in three dimensions through the interpolation of regularly spaced 2D seismic sections, constrained by wells data and surface geology of the Qaidam basin in northeast Tibet. Meanwhile the Cenozoic tectonic history of the Qaidam basin was reconstructed and the uplift mechanism of the Tibetan plateau was discussed. This study presents the subsurface data in conjunction with observations and analysis of the stratigraphic and sedimentary evolution. The Cenozoic deformation history of the Qaidam basin shows geologic synchroneity with uplifting history of the Tibet Plateau. It is therefore proposed that the deformation and uplifting in the south and north edges of the Tibet Plateau was almost synchronous. The total shortening and shortening rate during Cenozoic reached 25.5 km and 11.2% respectively across the Qaidam basin, indicating that the loss of the left-lateral strike slip rates of the Altyn Tagh fault has been structurally transformed into local crustal thickening across NW-trending folds and thrust faults. Meanwhile there is an about 11° vertical component along the strike-slip Altyn Tagh fault, the block oblique slip shows one more growth mechanism of the northeast Tibet.

Abstract:Based on field geology, seismic reflection profiling data and isopach maps, the structural deformation pattern, timing of deformation, and mechanism of formation of the western part of the NE Qaidam Basin (including the Pingtai Uplift, Lenghu and Eboliang structural belts) during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras have been investigated. Several anticlines in the Lenghu and Eboliang structural belts are generally characterized by double fault systems at different structural levels. At shallower crustal levels, a thrust fault system dominates and at lower levels positive flower structures accommodate oblique shortening, and these are mainly separated by weak strata layers in the Upper Xiaganchaigou Formation, of late Eocene age. Left-step en echelon distributed normal faults and trailing extensional imbricate fan structures consistently demonstrate that the Lenghu and Eboliang structural belts are dominated by dextral transpressional deformation. The western part of the NE Qaidam Basin experienced an initial stage of extension in the Jurassic, which was associated with the formation of several NW-striking normal faults. We hypothesize that most of the deep compressional structures and shallow anticlines were formed due to the SW-directed thrusting of the Qilian Shan since the early Eocene, as a far-field effect of the Indo-Asian “hard” collision. The NNE-directed shortening was associated with dextral transpressional deformation within the western part of the NE Qaidam Basin that took place after the deposition of the Shangyoushashan Formation, of middle-late Miocene age. We interpret this phase of deformation to have been an integral part of the pulsed growth of the whole Tibetan Plateau.
3-D Structural Analysis on the Kuqa's Qiulitag Anticline Zone of the Southern Tianshan Mountains, China

Abstract:The south margin of the Tianshan Mountains has undergone multiple phases of compressional deformation since the Oilgocene and Pleistocene. This deformation created the EW-striking Qiulitag anticline zone, 300 km long and 15 - 20 km wide, which is part of the Kuqa thrust-and-fold belt along the southern piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains. This paper presents a detailed description and analysis of a 3-D geometrical and kinematical model of the Qiulitag anticline zone. Over 3000 km-long 2-D seismic refection profiles, five exploratory wells and 1: 100000 scale geological mapping were used in the analysis. Two different thrust systems characterized by southward tectonic transport were found: an upper imbricate fault zone, which deforms Cenozoic strata with fault-propagation folds in the hanging wall, and a duplex structure of fault-bend-folds and fault ramps composed of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene rocks. The shallow folds of the Qiulitag anticline zone are tight and asymmetric, while the core of the Qiulitag anticline may be disharmonically folded at the level of Plaeogene shale and gypsum. The restoring balanced cross sections suggest that the minimum shortening of the deep fault system in the Qiulitag anticline zone is more than 10 km and decreases eastwards and westwards along its strike. The ramp height of the deep fault system is 3 km in the east regional cross section (where a sole thrust fault is developed) and declines westwards by 1 km to somewhere an imbricate fault is developed.
An Analysis of Distributed Strike‐Slip Shear Deformation of the Qaidam Basin, Northern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The interior structure of the Qaidam Basin records kinematic information related to the regional deformation of the northern Tibetan Plateau. Based on balanced cross sections and depth structure maps covering two individual anticlines in the western Qaidam Basin, we calculate shortening and strike-slip amounts on the structures. Strain analyses reveal a complex deformation mechanism for them, comprising similar to 7 degrees-10 degrees clockwise rotation and oblique convergence, with block rotation having contributed more to the sinistral slip than has oblique convergence. Considering the similarities in geometry, kinematics, and onset time of the pervasive northwest trending structures within the basin, we propose that they were developed during distributed dextral shear that has affected the Qaidam Basin since the early Miocene. The bulk shear strikes at similar to N55 degrees E, which is consistent with the northeastward decrease in gravitational potential energy away from the central Tibetan Plateau, and is facilitated by the movement on the Altyn Tagh and eastern Kunlun faults. Plain Language Summary The conceptual model of distributed strike-slip shear deformation has been tested in analog experiments and is thought to be relevant to regions affected by major strike-slip faults. However, whether this phenomenon is taking place on the Tibetan Plateau during continental collision remains uncertain, due mainly to insufficient kinematic constraints on local structures. We examine faults and anticlines in the western Qaidam Basin on the northern Tibetan Plateau. We find that the pervasive northwest trending structures in the basin show similarities in structural architecture and onset time. We retrace the deformation process based on kinematic calculations for the structures using subsurface exploration data. The results reveal that both clockwise rotation and oblique convergence have contributed to deformation of the structures and that block rotation has contributed more to the sinistral slip than has oblique convergence. We infer that this scenario reflects the outward decrease in gravitational potential energy away from the central Tibetan Plateau since the early Miocene, which gives rise to the northeastward dextral distributed strike-slip shear deformation of the Qaidam Basin. The Altyn Tagh fault acts as a relatively free boundary to the Qaidam Basin, while the eastern Kunlun fault transfers continuous, but laterally changing strain to the Qaidam Basin.

Abstract:Based on high-resolution Corona stereo pairs, QuickBird and LandSat7 ETM + multispectral imageries we quantitatively interpreted the surface deformation in Qiulitag belt of southern Tianshan Mountain, China. And according to the field survey we analysised its subsurface structural character and geomorphology. ETM + multispectral imageries are always used to distinguish petrology as well as structural character at macro scale, while high-resolution Corona stereo pairs and QuickBird are helpful in extraction of detailed structural parameters. It is favorable to quantitatively extract structural geomorphology from remote mapping by draping remote sensing imageries and geologic maps over digital elevation models (DEM) and integration of multisource-based remote sensing imageries. The structural intersection between western plunge portion of Kuqa Taw anticline and eastern plunge portion of southern Qiulitag anticline formed complex surface deformation in the middle segment of the Qiutag belt. Intensive deformation was observed in Jidike ( N1j) and Kangcun ( N 1K) formations of Middle Neogene, with several folds and faults formed on the surface. The strata of Kuqa(N2K)of Upper Neogene were twisted but continued, and the deformation were getting smaller with the strata ages ranging from old to new, which displayed that this area had depositing and at the same time getting deformation since Pliocene. The growing strata developed in Kuqa formation and Quaternary also indicated the belt was active.
Seismic Azimuthal Anisotropy of Northeastern Tibetan Plateau From Ambient Noise Double Beamforming Tomography: Implications for Crustal Deformation

Abstract:In this study, we obtain a three-dimensional (3-D) high resolution seismic anisotropy model of NE Tibet using ambient noise double beamforming (DBF) tomography with ChinArray-Himalaya II data. DBF tomography technique allows for the simultaneous derivation of local phase velocity and azimuthal anisotropy from ambient noise cross-correlations without performing tomographic inversion. Based on the DBF tomography results, we have constructed a high resolution 3-D azimuthal anisotropic shear wave velocity model of NE Tibet. Our model indicates the presence of prominent low velocities and strong azimuthal anisotropy in the mid-to lower crust beneath the Songpan-Ganzi belt, while the mid-to lower crust of the Qilian belt exhibits relatively weak low velocity and azimuthal anisotropy. We propose that crustal channel flow may be the primary mechanism driving crustal deformation in the Songpan-Ganzi belt, which is in the mature part of the plateau. As the Qilian belt is at an early stage of plateau formation, it is characterized by crustal shortening with the development of a sub-vertical foliation. Additionally, the misalignment between predicted and observed shear wave splitting reveals decoupled crust and upper mantle deformation west of the Ordos block where eastward mantle flow is deflected by the lithospheric keel of Ordos.
The bivergent growth of the Cenozoic Qilian Shan, northeastern Tibetan Plateau: Insights from numerical models

Abstract:<p>The Qilian Shan orogenic belt, located in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, undergoes intensive Cenozoic structural deformation with large lateral growth since the Miocene. The Cenozoic growth of the Qilian Shan is possibly resulted by the passive subduction of the North China Craton due to the far-field effect of the continuous Indo-Asian collision. Thus, the Qilian Shan can be seen as a syntectonic crustal-scale accretionary wedge above a middle intra-crustal weak layer. To date, the detailed Cenozoic crustal deformation manner of the Qilian Shan and its adjacent two basins remains unclear, especially for the southward propagation towards the Qaidam Basin. Whereas, the spatio-temporal characteristics of deformation distribution between the Qilian Shan and the adjacent two basins are critical to fulfill the lateral growth of the Tibetan Plateau. Hence, we conducted a series of high-resolution 2-D numerical models to investigate factors that influence crustal strain distribution. The first series models are thick-skinned models with single d&#233;collement, while Series II are two-d&#233;collement layer model, regarding the interaction between thick- and thin-skinned tectonics beneath the two adjacent basins. After 150 km of total convergence, model results suggest that the single d&#233;collement layer model is not sufficient in depicting the present-day crustal deformation pattern, while strain localization pattern from two-d&#233;collement layer model meets well with the geological and geophysical observations. The Hexi Corridor Basin may be involved with deep-crustal thrusting while the dominant deformation is still thin-skinned tectonics. Series III adds the filling-up sedimentation based on the conditions of Series II. We reveal that the differential sedimentation types between the Qaidam Basin and the Hexi Corridor Basin greatly depress fault propagation towards the Qaidam Basin. Note that, how deformation transfers into the Qaidam Basin remains controversial. To date, the above models still need to evolve. Temporal and spatial patterns of Cenozoic deformation across the Qaidam Basin, Northern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:We conducted a systematic analysis of the temporal and spatial patterns of Cenozoic deformation of the northeastern (NE) and southwestern (SW) parts of the Qaidam Basin, the largest and thickest Cenozoic sedimentary basin within the Tibetan Plateau, by constructing balanced cross‐sections traversing the whole basin using high‐resolution seismic‐reflection data. We found that that these two parts deformed synchronously with similar temporal patterns involving nearly constant NE–SW contraction before c. 2.5 Ma and much more intense shortening, possibly enhanced by fierce wind erosion, since then. However, the spatial deformation patterns of these two areas differ markedly: an eastward weakening trend in the SW part is not observed in the NE part. We believe that this difference is due to their different boundary conditions. This result places new constraints on the formation mechanisms of the northern Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract:Abstract The Paleogene Lulehe Formation marks the onset of deposition in the Qaidam basin and preserves evidence of the initial topographic growth of northern Tibet. However, limited outcrops impede understanding of the sedimentary features of the Lulehe Formation as well as the tectonic relationship between the basin and surrounding topography. To fill this gap, we investigated core samples along the basin margin and conducted flexural modeling to estimate the topographic load of the Qilian Shan and Eastern Kunlun Shan during the deposition of the Lulehe Formation. Core samples reveal that the Lulehe Formation mainly consists of distal fluvial to marginal lacustrine deposits and proximal fluvial deposits along the southern margin of the basin while characterized by proximal alluvial fan deposits along the northern margin of the basin. Together with evidence for faulting shown on the seismic profiles, we infer that simultaneous deformation within the Qilian Shan and Altyn Tagh Shan during the Paleogene resulted in accumulation of coarse detrital deposits in the northwestern and northeastern Qaidam basin. The simultaneous deformation within the Altyn Tagh Shan and Qilian Shan since the Paleogene supports the idea that deformation in these two regions is kinematically linked. One‐load and two‐load beam flexural modeling indicate that the topographic load generated by both the Eastern Kunlun Shan and the Qilian Shan is responsible for the subsidence of the Qaidam basin during deposition of the Lulehe Formation. Our results highlight the initial relative high topography in the northern Tibetan plateau during the early Cenozoic.

Difference of shortening strain for the crustal deformation model in the eastern and western Qaidam Basin and their implications, northern Tibetan Plateau, China

Abstract:To recognize the differences in the west–east crustal deformation model of the Qaidam Basin, we presented the shortening amount of each fold and fault along 12 sections. According to the eastward weakening trend of shortening strain in the southwestern part of the basin and the non-continuous trend in the northeastern part of the basin, the Qaidam Basin can be divided by a new line into the western Qaidam Basin (WQB) and the eastern Qaidam Basin (EQB). The WQB is characterized by a maximum shortening strain of 25%, transpressional structures, and crust–mantle decoupling, which is possibly weakened by the eastward extension of the crust–mantle mix zone caused by upwelling material along the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF). In contrast, the EQB is characterized by a minimum shortening strain of 2%, pure thrust boundary faults, and gentle folds, which is defined as a rigid craton basin. The crust–mantle mix zone beneath ATF and the low-velocity zone beneath the eastern Kunlun Shan show the limited impact of the lithospheric weakening on the EQB. The Miocene reorganization of the ATF is the key tectonic event that accounts for the differences in the east–west crustal deformation model of the Qaidam Basin, as it weakened the lithosphere and facilitated the transpressional structures of the WQB. The WQB was originally a rigid craton basin like the EQB, but it became a destabilized craton after the a forementioned tectonic event.

Multiscale lithospheric buckling dominates the Cenozoic subsidence and deformation of the Qaidam Basin: A new model for the growth of the northern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:How the present-day northern Tibetan Plateau was involved in the plateau formation process in context of the Cenozoic India – Eurasia collision has been disputed for decades. As the largest sedimentary basin within the Tibetan Plateau and enclosed by high mountains such as the Qiman Tagh – East Kunlun Shan and the Qilian Shan in the Cenozoic, the Qaidam Basin preserves a continuous and complete record that is key to addressing this issue. Herein, we review the sedimentary and structural features of the Qaidam Basin in the Cenozoic, as well as their relationship with surrounding orogenic belts. The review suggests that the subsidence and in-filling of the Qaidam Basin are closely linked to the uplifting and exhumation of the bordering orogenic belts during the Cenozoic. Therefore, the tectonic subsidence pattern of the Qaidam Basin could be applied to investigate the deformation mechanism of the northern Tibetan Plateau. Guided by this, we implement two-dimensional (2-D) subsidence analysis and related numerical modeling to investigate the subsidence and deformation mechanisms of the Cenozoic Qaidam Basin. The tectonic-driven subsidence across the Qaidam Basin has occurred since the deposition of the Lulehe Formation, the lowermost Cenozoic stratum in the basin, and is largest (several kilometers) near the center but decreases gradually toward the margins. This subsidence pattern is best explained by lithospheric buckling with a wavelength of ~200 km, which is likely controlled by the strength of entire lithosphere. Structural observations further reveal that parallel folds with a peak wavelength of ~20 km prevail in the basin interior, and are likely caused by upper-crustal buckling controlled by the strength of upper crust. These observations suggest that the northern Tibetan Plateau initially responded to the India – Eurasia collision by long-wavelength lithospheric buckling in Eocene to Oligocene. As a result, the Qaidam Basin tectonically subsided as a synclinal depression. Destruction of the lithospheric buckling folds occurred under continued horizontal force, and may generate major bounding reverse faults of the Qaidam Basin, leading to strain localization and thus rapid crustal thickening in the surrounding mountains since the middle Miocene. At the same time, shorter-wavelength upper-crustal buckling folds developed in the interior of the Qaidam Basin. Our findings portray a multiscale buckling mechanism, which is controlled by a strong upper crust and uppermost mantle with a weaker lower crust beneath the Qaidam Basin, and suggest that horizontal contraction plays a dominant role in driving the tectonic evolution of the entire northern Tibetan Plateau.
