Abstract:Widespread accumulation of thick carbonates is not typical of orogenic settings. During the mid-Cretaceous, near the Bangong suture in the northern Lhasa terrane, the shallow-marine carbonates of the Langshan Formation, reaching a thickness up to similar to 1 km, accumulated in an epicontinental seaway over a modern area of 132 x 10(3) km(2), about half of the Arabian/Persian Gulf. The origin of basin-wide carbonate deposits located close to a newly formed orogenic belt is not well understood, partly because of the scarcity of paleogeographic studies on the evolution of the northern Lhasa. Based on a detailed sedimentological and stratigraphic investigation, three stages in the mid-Cretaceous paleogeographic evolution of northern Lhasa were defined: (1) remnant clastic sea with deposition of Duoni/Duba formations (Early to early Late Aptian, ca. 125-116 Ma); (2) expanding carbonate seaway of Langshan Formation (latest Aptian-earliest Cenomanian, ca. 116-99 Ma); and (3) closure of the carbonate seaway represented by the Daxiong/Jingzhushan formations (Early Cenomanian to Turonian, ca. 99-92 Ma). Combined with data on tectonic subsidence and eustatic curves, we emphasized the largely eustatic control on the paleogeographic evolution of the northern Lhasa during the latest Aptian-earliest Cenomanian when the Langshan carbonates accumulated, modulated by long-term slow tectonic subsidence and high carbonate productivity.

Abstract:An E-W-trending late Cretaceous terrestrial molasse with a thickness of 1800 m deposited in the Coqen basin,central Lhasa terrane.Detailed measurement on the well outcropped Xiagezi section near Neidaxiong village in the study area was carried out.This set of the strata can be divided into five members as follow:medium-coarse grained sandstones,massive conglemerates,medium grained sandstones interbedded with siltstones and mudstones,massive siltstones/mudstones,and homogeneous mediumgrained sandstones.The strata unconformabley overlays over the Langshan limestones and are covered by Cenozoic sediments.Analysis of lithogical facies assemblage and sedimentary structures shows that the strata formed under the alluvial fan-braided river systems.Phacinoides occurring in the interbedded volcanic rocks and the underlying Langshan limestones indicate that the strata formed at ～98～91 Ma,and this is consistent with the age of the youngest detrital zircons.Statistic results also show that conglomerate and sandstone modal compositions imply a "magmatic arc" source area.The detrital zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes suggest that the widely spread Early Cretaceous Zenong volcanic rocks on the central Lhasa terrane may be the main source.Based on distribution,composition and the provenance of the Late Cretaceous terrestrial sediments,this study defined the "Daxiong Formation" and compared it with the Jingzhushan Formation in the north of the central Lhasa terrane.The study suggests that the two may represent early tectonic uplifting of the central Lhasa terrane during the early Late Cretaceous (～98～91 Ma),and this provides geological evidence for the uplifting of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau prior to the IndoAsian continental collision.

Abstract:The tectonic evolution of the Lhasa terrane (southern Tibetan Plateau) played a fundamental role in the formation of the Tibetan Plateau. However, many uncertainties remain with regard to the tectonic and paleogeographic evolution of the Lhasa terrane prior to the India-Asia collision. To determine the early tectonic processes that controlled the topographic evolution of the Lhasa terrane, we analyze the Cretaceous strata exposed in the Coqen Basin (northern Lhasa subterrane), which comprises the Langshan and Daxiong Formations. The Langshan Formation unconformably overlies the volcanic rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Zelong Group and consists of similar to 80 m of Orbitolina-bearing limestones, which were deposited in a low-energy, shallow marine environment. Micropaleontological analysis indicates that the Langshan Formation in the Coqen Basin was deposited from late Aptian to early Cenomanian times (ca. 113-96 Ma). The overlying Daxiong Formation (similar to 1700 m thick) consists of conglomerate, coarse sandstone, and siltstone with interbedded mudstone, and represents deposits of alluvial fans and braided rivers. The Daxiong Formation was deposited after the early Cenomanian (ca. 96 Ma) and accumulated until at least ca. 91 Ma, indicating accumulation rates of greater than 0.3 km m.y.(-1). By combining paleocurrent data, sandstone petrology, detrital zircon U-Pb ages, and Hf isotope analysis, we demonstrate that the Daxiong Formation was derived from Lower Cretaceous volcanic rocks and pre-Cretaceous strata in the northern Lhasa subterrane. During Late Cretaceous time, two thrust systems with opposite vergence were responsible for transforming the northern Lhasa subterrane into an elevated mountain range. This process resulted in the evolution from a shallow marine environment (Langshan Formation) into a terrestrial depositional environment (Daxiong Formation) on the southern margin of the northern Lhasa subterrane. Given the regional paleogeographic context, we conclude that the Daxiong Formation in the Coqen Basin records local crustal shortening and flexure resulting in foreland basin development on the southern margin of the northern Lhasa subterrane, which implies early topographic growth of the northern Lhasa subterrane in southern Tibet prior to the India-Asia collision.

Abstract:This study of mid-Cretaceous foraminifera from the Linzhou, the Cogen and the Xigaze Basins in the southern Tibetan Plateau has provided the first high resolution biostratigraphic description of these limestones and interpretation of their paleoenvironmental settings. The fossil assemblages are dominated primarily by orbitolinid larger benthic foraminifera. We reassessed the identification of many taxa, dividing the South Tibetan sedimentary successions of Aptian to Early Cenomanian age into eight new foraminiferal biozones (TLK1 a-h): (i) (TLK1a) a shallow reefal environment corresponding to planktonic foraminifera zone (PZ) Aptian 1-2, dominated by Palorbitolina and Praeorbitolina spp.; (ii) (TLK1b) a transgressive, reefal to forereefal environment corresponding to PZ Aptian 3, characterized by the first appearance of Mesorbitolina parva; (iii) (TLK1c) a shallow reefal to backreef environment of Late Aptian (PZ Aptian 4) age, characterized by the first appearance of Mesorbitolina texana; (iv) (TLK1d) a transgressive phase of forereef to an inner neritic environment of Albian (PZ Albian 1) age, characterized by the first appearance of Cuneolina pavonia; (v) (TLKe) an open marine reefal environment of Albian (PZ Albian 2) age, with assemblages dominated by flat to slightly conical orbitolinids, characterized by the first appearance of Palorbitolinoides hedini; (vi) (TLK1f) a shallow, open-marine reefal to forereef environment of Middle Albian (PZ Albian 3) age, dominated by flat and convex orbitolinids, and characterized by the first appearance of Mesorbitolina aperta; (vii) (TLK1g) a reefal to forereef environment of end Albian (PZ Albian 4) age, characterized by the appearance of Conicorbitolina cf. cuvillieri and Pseudochoffatella cuvillieri, and in which Early Aptian species of Praeorbitolina cf. wienandsi have been recorded for the first time from the Late Albian; (viii) (TLK1h) a shallow reefal environment of Early Cenomanian age characterized by the first appearance of Conicorbitolina sp. A and Nezzazata conica. The eight new biozones provided biostratigraphic correlation of the Langshan, Sangzugang and Takena Formations in the Lhasa terrane, while the observed evolution of the environmentally controlled microfacies corresponds closely with the current, inferred global sea-level variation of the period. The almost continuous sedimentary sequences studied allowed previously defined orbitolinid phylogenetic linages to be confirmed.
Early Cretaceous Topographic Growth of the Lhasaplano, Tibetan Plateau: Constraints from the Damxung Conglomerate

Abstract:Constraining the timing of early topographic growth on the Tibetan plateau is critical for any models of India‐Asia collision, Himalayan orogeny and subsequent plateau development in the Cenozoic. Stratigraphic, sedimentological and provenance analysis of the Lower Cretaceous red‐beds of the Damxung Conglomerate provide new key information to reconstruct the paleogeography and the tectonic evolution of the Lhasa terrane at the time. The over 700‐m‐thick Damxung Conglomerate documents distal alluvial fan to braidplain sedimentation passing upward to proximal alluvial fan sedimentation. Deposition began near sea level, as documented by limestone beds occurring at the base of the unit. Zircon U–Pb dating of interbedded tuff layers constrain deposition age at ca. 111 Ma. Abundance of volcanic clasts, Cretaceous U–Pb ages and Hf isotopes of detrital zircons yielding mainly negative εHf(t) values together with paleocurrent data indicate an active volcanic source located in the North Lhasa subterrane. Pre‐Mesozoic‐aged zircon, recycled quartz and (meta) sedimentary rock fragments increase up‐section, indicating progressive erosional exhumation of the Paleozoic sedimentary/metasedimentary basement. The Damxung Conglomerate thus records a significant uplift and unroofing stage in the source region, implying initial topographic growth on the Lhasa terrane at early Albian time. Early Cretaceous topographic growth on the Lhasa terrane is supported by the stratigraphic record in the Linzhou basin, the Xigaze forearc basin and the southern Nima basin. In contrast, marine strata in the central‐western Lhasa terrane lasted until the early Cenomanian (ca. 96 Ma), indicating diachronous marine regression on the Lhasa terrane from east to west.
Early Cretaceous Sedimentary Evolution of the Northern Lhasa Terrane and the Timing of Initial Lhasa-Qiangtang Collision

Abstract:Lower Cretaceous strata in the Baingoin basin of the northern Lhasa terrane record initial collision between the Lhasa and Qiangtang blocks, followed by the early uplift of central Tibet. North-south traverses across the Baingoin basin highlight m a jor differences between the Duba Formation in the north and the quasi-coeval Duoni Formation in the south. The Duba Formation documents upward transition from shallow shelf and deltaic environments to coarse-grained siliciclastic fluvial sedimentation. Abundance of detrital zircons yielding Jurassic-Cretaceous ages with epsilon Hf(t) values mainly between -2 and +10, occurrence of chert, Cr-spinel, and pyroxene grains, together with southward paleocurrent directions indicate that the Duba Formation was sourced from the southern Qiangtang terrane and Bangong-Nujiang suture zone to the north. The Duoni Formation in the south was deposited in shelfal to fan-delta and fluvial environments. Abundant volcanic lasts, detrital zircons yielding Cretaceous ages with mainly negative epsilon Hf(t) values, and northward paleocurrents indicate an active volcanic source located in the central Lhasa terrane to the south, with minor input from the northern Lhasa terrane. Only the northern part of the Baingoin basin was directly controlled by the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision and may thus be considered a peripheral foreland basin, whereas the southern part was mainly influenced by tectonic processes related to the northward subduction of Neotethyan lithosphere, and may thus be comparable to a retroarc foreland basin. But these sedimentary features and the 139-79 Ma Baingoin plutonic intrusion do not fit well with classical foreland-basin models. Zircon chronostratigraphy constrains the final consumption of Bangong-Nujiang oceanic lithosphere and initial collision between the Lhasa and Qiangtang microcontinents to have taken place by 122 Ma, which has major implications for paleotectonic reconstructions of the Tibetan Plateau. Jurassic Carbonate Microfacies and Relative Sea-Level Changes in the Tethys Himalaya (southern Tibet)

Abstract:Detailed microfacies analysis of carbonate rocks from the Tingri and Nyalam areas of southern Tibet allowed us to reconstruct the evolution of sedimentary environments and relative sea-level changes during the Early to Middle Jurassic. Based on texture, sedimentary structure, grain composition, and fossil content of ~500 thin sections, 17 microfacies overall were identified, and three evolutionary stages of sedimentary environments were defined. Stage 1 (Rhaetian?–lower Sinemurian Zhamure Formation) is characterized by siliciclastic and mixed siliciclastic-carbonate sedimentation on a barrier island environment. Stage 2 (upper Sinemurian–Pliensbachian Pupuga Formation) is characterized by high-energy grainstones with rich benthic faunas thriving on a carbonate platform, documenting transgressions in the early and late Pliensbachian. Stage 3 (Toarcian–lower Bajocian Nieniexiongla Formation) is characterized by low-energy mudstones intercalated with frequent storm layers on a carbonate ramp, documenting the climax of the early Toarcian transgression in the beginning of the unit. The transition from Stage 1 to Stage 2 points to a paleogeographic and paleoclimatic change, as the Tibetan Tethys Himalaya moved toward tropical latitudes characterized by highly suitable climatic and ecological conditions for carbonate sedimentation. The abrupt change from Stage 2 to Stage 3 is interpreted as a consequence of the early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, accompanied by short-term warming and sea-level rise. The failed recovery from the carbonate crisis in the early Bajocian, with continuing deposition on a low-energy carbonate ramp, may reflect tectonic migration toward higher southern latitudes and/or a reduction of the effect of warm tropical currents reaching the southern Tethys.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau was formed by long-term terrane accretion and block collision, controlled by complicated Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic mechanisms. However, its detail Cretaceous evolution history remains controversial. This study compiles available low-temperature thermochronology results and adakitic rocks data from the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes to investigate its evolution. Two collected datasets synthetically demonstrate a deep-surface coupling relationship with rapid exhumation and crustal thickening during ~120–80 Ma over the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes. These terranes amalgamated before 120 Ma, resulting in rapid uplift and crustal thickening of southern Qiangtang during 120–80 Ma. Meanwhile, other sub-terranes outside of the southern Qiangtang terrane, including northern Qiangtang, northern Lhasa, and central Lhasa, also underwent stepwise surface uplift due to intense folding and thrusting. Instead of continuous crustal thickening, the northern and central Lhasa sub-terranes experienced intense erosion and delamination of early thickened crust during ~90–80 Ma. Furthermore, the southern Lhasa sub-terrane rapidly uplifted during 70–60 Ma due to the Neo-Tethyan subduction. Eventually, the Cretaceous high geomorphic configuration across the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes was shaped by terrane collision, lower crustal delamination, and Neo-Tethyan subduction prior to the India-Asia continental collision.

Abstract:The Lower Cretaceous sedimentary strata in the Lhasa Terrane record the palaeogeographic and tectonic history of the Tibetan Plateau prior to the India-Asia collision. The Lower Cretaceous strata in the Coqen Basin of the northern Lhasa subterrane include the Duoni and Langshan Formations. The Duoni Formation is composed of conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones and mudstones in the south deposited in a fluvial environment and quartzose-lithic sandstones, siltstones and mudstones in the north deposited in a shelf-coastal environment. The overlying Langshan Formation is characterized by abundant Orbitolina- and rudist-bearing wackestones and packstones, which were deposited on a low-energy carbonate ramp. The Langshan Formation in the Coqen Basin was deposited between ~119–115Ma and ~98Ma based on its large benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Age constraints based on the interbedded tuff and conformably overlying Langshan Formation indicate that the Duoni Formation was deposited between ~123 and 115Ma. Sandstone detrital modal compositions further indicate that the Duoni Formation was primarily derived from magmatic arc and recycled orogen sources. Detrital zircons from the Duoni Formation yield a primary age population of 160–110Ma (peaking at ~130Ma), with negative εHf(t) values (−18.7 to −2.7), and additional age ranges of 550–500, 1200–900, and 1600–1500Ma, thereby indicating that the Zenong volcanic rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary bedrocks in the northern Lhasa subterrane are the most likely sources. The palaeogeography of the northern Lhasa subterrane can be approximately described in two stages. During the Aptian (~123–115Ma), with the eruption of the Zenong volcanic rocks, the Duoni Formation accumulated in fluvial and shelf-coastal environments and was sourced from the Zenong volcanic rocks and basement rocks from the southern region of the northern Lhasa subterrane. The enhanced magmatic activities in the northern Lhasa subterrane may have influenced the Duoni Formation deposition. During the Late Aptian-Early Cenomanian (~115–98Ma), a north-south transgression occurred, causing the majority of the northern Lhasa region to be dominated by shallow-marine limestones of the Langshan Formation.
Crustal thickening and uplift of the northwestern Lhasa Terrane, central Tibetan Plateau: Insights from Mid-Eocene volcanic rocks in the Gerze Region

Abstract:The timing of raising the northern Lhasa crust to its present-day value remains controversial. Here, we address this issue through the geochemical makeup of Eocene (ca. 37 Ma; zircon UPb dating) volcanic rocks erupted in the Gerze Region, northwestern Lhasa Terrane. The Gerze volcanic rocks (GVRs) possess uniform whole-rock (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.7045–0.7059) and εNd(t) (0.78–1.50), and zircon εHf(t) (5.25–9.83) and δ18O (6.74‰–7.81‰) values. However, based on the differences in major and trace elements, the GVRs are classified into two groups. The Group I rocks show adakitic affinities, as evidenced by their high SiO2 (67.62–70.66 wt%), Sr (399–519 ppm), low Y (8.2–10.8 ppm), and Yb (0.78–1.15 ppm) concentrations, and absence of negative Eu anomalies. In conjunction with the intra-block setting of the study area during the Eocene, the lack of coeval mafic rocks, and the low Mg# (<41) and compatible element concentrations (e.g., Ni <35 ppm), we propose that the Group I rocks were formed by partially molten thickened lower continental crust with garnet and minor amphibole in the melting residue. The Group II rocks, in comparison, have higher SiO2 (70.08–77.48 wt%), lower Sr (155–244 ppm) values, and distinctly negative Eu anomalies, which, coupled with their similar Sr-Nd-Hf-O isotopic makeup with that of the Group I rocks, suggest they were most likely evolved from the pristine lower crust-derived magmas through removal of feldspar, biotite, and accessory minerals. Quantitative estimates of the paleo-crustal thickness (70.2 ± 12.7 km) and elevation (5.7 ± 0.6 km) through the whole-rock (La/Yb)N and Sr/Y ratios suggest that the northern Lhasa Terrane, at least part of its western segment, had achieved its present-day thickness and elevation by the Mid-Eocene, as a result of horizontally tectonic shortening of continental crust according to a synthesis of our new and the regionally tectonmagamtic data.

Abstract:This study presents a detailed stratigraphic record of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in the Gamba area of the Tethyan Himalaya, a carbonate-platform succession originally deposited along the southern margin of the eastern Tethys Ocean. The Paleocene-Eocene boundary interval is marked by a negative carbon isotope excursion at the boundary between members 3 and 4 of the Zongpu Formation. The succession is erosionally truncated at this surface, which is overlain by an intraformational carbonate conglomerate, and only the upper part of the PETM interval is preserved. Foraminiferal assemblages of Shallow Benthic Zone 4 are present below the conglomerate bed, but are replaced by assemblages of Shallow Benthic Zone 6 above the conglomerate. Depositional facies also change across this surface; below the disconformity, floatstones and packstones containing nummulitid forams record progressive transgression in an open-marine environment, whereas restricted or lagoonal inner-ramp deposits containing Alveolina and Orbitolites are typical above the disconformity. The prominent negative excursion observed in the δ13C of whole-rock carbonate (−1.0‰ at Zongpu, −2.4‰ at Zengbudong) and organic matter (−24.7‰, at Zengbudong) is correlated to the characteristic PETM carbon isotope excursion. This major negative excursion in shallow-marine carbonates may have partly resulted from syndepositional alteration of organic matter. The erosional unconformity can be constrained to the lower PETM interval (between 56 and 55.5Ma), and is identifiable throughout the Tethyan Himalaya. This widespread disconformity is attributable to tectonic uplift associated with the southward migration of an orogenic wave, originated 3±1Ma earlier in the middle Paleocene at the first site of India-Asia continent-continent collision. A possible eustatic component of the pre-PETM sea-level fall, which resulted in the excavation of incised valleys filled during the subsequent sea-level rise when the conglomerate bed was deposited, remains to be assessed.
Late Triassic Orogenic Assembly Of The Tibetan Plateau: Constraints From Magmatism And Metamorphism In The East Lhasa Terrane

Abstract:The early Mesozoic evolution of the Lhasa terrane, which represents a major component of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen, remains highly controversial. In particular, geological units and events documented either side of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis (EHS) are poorly correlated. Here, we report new petrological, geochemical and geochronological data for cogenetic peraluminous S-type granites and metamorphic rocks (gneiss and schist) from the Motuo-Bomi-Chayu region of the eastern Lhasa terrane, located on the eastern flank of the EHS. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that these units record both Late Triassic magmatic (216-206 Ma) and metamorphic (209-198 Ma) episodes. The granites were derived from a Paleoproterozoic crustal source with negative zircon EHf(t) values (-5.5 to -16.6) and T-DM2 model ages of 1.51-1.99 Ga, and are interpreted to have formed by crustal anatexis of nearby metasediments during collisional orogeny and crustal thickening. The gneisses and schists experienced similar upper amphibolite-facies peak metamorphism and associated partial melting, followed by decompressional cooling and retrograde metamorphism. These rocks were buried to lower-crustal depths and then exhumed to the surface in a collisional orogenic setting during plate convergence. From comparison of these data with those for other metamorphic belts with similar grades and ages, and association of coeval granitic magmatism widespread in the central-east Lhasa terrane, we propose that the studied cogenetic magmatism and metamorphism in the Motuo-Bomi-Chayu region records Late Triassic accretion of the North Lhasa and South Lhasa terranes, which represents the first evidence of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean closure in this part of Asia. These data provide new constraints on the spatial and temporal evolution of the Paleo-Tethyan Wilson Cycle and provide a 'missing link' to correlate the geology and tectonic history of the Lhasa terrane continental crust on either side of the EHS.

Abstract:The organic carbon isotope (δ 13 C org ) curve for ~1.7-km-thick mid-Cretaceous strata of the Chaqiela section in Gamba area, southern Tibet is presented in this study. C-isotopic chemostratigraphic correlation combined with biostratigraphic constraints show that the Chaqiela section spans early Aptian through early Campanian period, and that almost all of the carbon cycle perturbations and Oceanic Anoxic Events during the mid-Cretaceous period are well recorded in the continental margin area of the southeastern Tethys Ocean. Significantly, two levels of methane-derived authigenic carbonates were identified at the onset of OAE1b near the Aptian-Albian boundary. We suggest that an increase in methane release from gas hydrates, potentially driven by sea-level fall and bottom water temperature increase, may have contributed to the large negative δ 13 C org excursions and global warming during OAE1b.

Abstract:The Late Cretaceous to early Paleogene shallow marine carbonates in the Tethys Himalaya in southern Tibet are important historical witnesses of the evolution of the northern Indian continental margin, the closure of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the initial India-Asia continental collision. The polarizing microscope was used to collect polarizing microphotographs of carbonate or mixed carbonate-siliciclastic rocks from late Cretaceous Bolinxiala Formation, Jiubao Formation, Zhepure Shanpo Formation and early Paleogene Zongpu Formation in the Tethys Himalaya of southern Tibet. The photomicrograph dataset includes 445 carbonate or mixed carbonate-siliciclastic samples from 5 stratigraphic sections. The location, stratigraphic age, petrographic characteristics of these samples are described in detail. It is expected to provide basic geological information for the reconstruction of sedimentary environment before and after the initial Indi-Asia continental collision and the timing of initial India-Asia continental collision.
