Abstract:The Permian marine-terrestrial system of the North China block provides an exceptional window into the evolution of northern temperate ecosystems during the critical transition from icehouse to greenhouse following the late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA). Despite many studies on its rich hydrocarbon reserves and climate-sensitive fossil flora, uncertain temporal constraints and correlations have hampered a thorough understanding of the records of geologic, biologic, and climatic change from the North China block. We present a new chronostratigraphy based on high-precision U-Pb chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) geochronology of tuffs from a near-complete latest Carboniferous–Permian succession in North China. The results indicate that the predominance of continental red beds, climate aridification, and the disappearance of coals and characteristic tropical flora were well under way during the Cisuralian (Early Permian) in the North China block, significantly earlier than previously thought. A nearly 20 m.y. hiatus spanning the early Kungurian to the mid-Guadalupian (or later) is revealed in the northern North China block to have close temporal and spatial associations with the closure and/or subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and its related tectonic convergence. This long hiatus was concomitant with the prominent loss of the highly diverse and abundant Cathaysian floras and the widespread invasion of the monotonous Angaran floras under arid climate conditions in the North China block. Similarities in the floral and climate shift histories between Euramerica and North China suggest that aside from the regional tectonic controls and continental movement, extensive volcanism during the Cisuralian may have played a major role in the global warming and aridification in the aftermath of the LPIA.

Abstract:The southeastern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) is characterized by zircon ages of dominantly >2.6 Ga and differs significantly from most other regions in the NCC with mostly similar to 2.5 Ga zircons. In order to better understand the Precambrian crustal evolution of the NCC, we conducted a study of in situ zircon U-Pb dating, trace element and Hf isotope analyses as well as whole-rock geochemistry on a comprehensive set of core samples from three drilling holes intersecting the basement rocks of the Huoqiu area at the southeastern margin of the NCC. Our data reveal three magmatic events at similar to 3.02 Ga, similar to 2.77 Ga and similar to 2.71 Ga. In addition, seven analyses of possibly inherited zircon cores plot along a discordant line with an upper intercept age of 3262 35 Ma, indicating possible existence of a Paleoarchean crystalline basement. The similar to 3.02 Ga zircons have positive epsilon(Hf)(t) values close to the depleted mantle growth curve and their U-Pb ages are only slightly younger than the T-DM1 model ages, hence recording a Mesoarchean crust-forming event. The similar to 2.77 Ga zircons also register a period of crustal growth, but probably with some involvement of older crust. The similar to 2.71 Ga zircons have lower epsilon(Hf)(t) values and older T-DM1 model ages than the similar to 2.77 Ga zircons, suggesting that the former were mainly derived from older continental crust, in contrast to the traditional idea that similar to 2.7 Ga was a major period of crustal growth in the NCC. Geochemistry and Detrital Zircon U–Pb and Hf Isotopes of the Paragneiss Suite from the Quanji Massif, SE Tarim Craton: Implications for Paleoproterozoic Tectonics in NW China

Abstract:The Delingha paragneiss suite in the Quanji massif, southeastern Tarim Craton, is composed of mica schist, paragneiss, leptynite and quartzite, similar to the 'khondalite suites' described from elsewhere in the world. The mica schist is rich in Al2O3 (up to similar to 26 wt%) and contains graphite and diagnostic minerals including sillimanite and garnet, with metamorphism under amphibolite-facies to locally granulite-facies conditions as manifested by association with amphibolite and granulite. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages and geochemical data indicate that the protolith materials of the Delingha paragneiss suite were mainly sourced from 2.20 to 2.45 Ga granites, felsic volcanic rocks and TTG, and were deposited at 2.17-1.92 Ga. The detrital zircon Hf and whole-rock Nd isotopes document important crustal growth at similar to 2.5-2.7 Ga. The detrital zircon age spectra, the whole rock Nd and zircon Hf model ages, the low-maturity of the protolith, and short-distance transportation suggest that the detritus were derived from the underlying Delingha Complex and the lower Dakendaban sub-Group. The timing of magmatic activities in the source region, the depositional age and metamorphic histories of the Delingha paragneiss suite are all comparable to those recorded in the khondalite belt along northern margin of the Ordos Block in the North China Craton. Our study shows that the 2.2-2.45 Ga magmatic rocks were generated in arc or active continental margin settings, suggesting a prolonged subduction and accretion history prior to final amalgamation (similar to 2.5-1.8 Ga) to form the unified North China Craton and the assembly of the Tarim Craton in NW China. Abstract:The Carboniferous-Permian strata in the North China Block (NCB) contain abundant fossils, coals and natural gases. Establishing a high-resolution timescale for the Carboniferous and Permian in the NCB is essential to understand the geologic events and explore the spatial and temporal distributions of the natural resources. The upper Carboniferous and the basal part of Permian are relatively well correlated because they yield marine conodont and fusuline fossils. However, the Permian terrestrial strata mostly rely on poorly constrained palynostratigraphy and phytostratigraphy and are short of the precise geochronologic constraints on the correlation with the marine strata. This study provides a critical review on the state-of-the-art of the latest Carboniferous and Permian chronostratigraphic and biostratigraphic frameworks and stratigraphic correlation in the NCB. The Penchi Formation ranges from lower Bashkirian to lower Gzhelian; the Taiyuan Formation is assigned to the upper Gzhelian to lower Asselian; the Shansi and Lower Shihhotse formations are from middle Asselian to lower Sakmarian; the Upper Shihhotse Formation is assigned to upper Artinskian to lower Kungurian, and the Sunjiagou Formation was assigned to Lopingian, respectively. A long hiatus up to ∼20 Myr between the Upper Shihhotse and Sunjiagou formations, mainly marked by a large-scale erosional surface at the base of a coarse conglomeratic sandstone unit and/or multiple paleosol layers as well as significant differences of floras between these two lithostratigraphic units, is present probably due to tectonic uplift in association with the closure of the Paleo Asian Ocean (PAO) during the Cisuralian and Guadalupian. The possible amplitude of sea-level changes from Carboniferous to Permian on the NCB is estimated from 0 to 40 m. The floral succession, depositional records and organic carbon isotope profiles suggest that the latest Carboniferous and earliest Permian was a favorable period for coal accumulation under an ever-wet and warm climate, followed by a prominent shift to dry climate from early-middle Cisuralian. This climatic shift during the Permian was mainly resulted from northward migration of the Pangea and the closure of the PAO, which is comparable with the Carboniferous and Permian trends in central Europe.

Abstract:The southwestern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) is located between the Alax Terrane to the northwest, the North Qilian Orogen to the west and the North Qinling Orogen to the south. However, the paleogeographic and tectonic evolution for the southwestern part of the NCC in the Late Paleozoic is still poorly constrained. In order to constrain the Late Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the southwestern NCC, we carried out detailed field work and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological research on Middle–Late Permian sedimentary rocks at the southwestern margin of the NCC. The U-Pb age spectra of detrital zircons from six samples are similar, showing four populations of 2.6–2.4 Ga, 2.0–1.7 Ga, 500–360 Ma and 350–250 Ma. Moreover, on the basis of the weighted-mean age of the youngest detrital zircons (257±4 Ma), combined with the published results and volcanic interlayers, we propose that the Shangshihezi Formation formed during the Middle–Late Permian. Our results and published data indicate that the detrital zircons with age groups of 2.6 - 2.4 Ga and 2.0 - 1.7 Ga were likely derived from the Khondalite Belt and Yinshan Block in the northwestern NCC. The junction part between the North Qinling and North Qilian Orogen may provide the 500–360 Ma detrital zircons for the study area. The 350–250 Ma detrital zircons were probably derived from the northwestern part of the NCC. The majority of materials from Shangshihezi Formation within the study area were derived from the northwestern part of the NCC, indicating that the northwestern part of the NCC was strongly uplifted possibly resulting from the progressive subduction and closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. A small amount of materials were sourced from southwestern part of the NCC, indicating that the North Qinling Orogen experienced a minor uplift resulting from the northward subduction of the South Qinling terrane.

Abstract:The Carboniferous-Permian strata of the North China Block (NCB) contain significant economic reserves of coal and gas. In this paper, a comprehensive dataset comprising 401 stratigraphic sections encompassing the Carboniferous-Permian transition in the NCB is compiled from the OneStratigraphy and Geobiodiversity databases. We conducted quantitative analyses of this dataset using ArcGIS and GPlates software, and utilized an up to date plate motion model, to perform a dynamic palaeogeographical reconstruction. The spatio-temporal distribution of depositional facies were also analysed, including basement terranes, fluvio-lacustrine settings, swamps, shorelines, tidal flats, and carbonate platforms. Our reconstructions reveal that the NCB was flanked by basement areas of the Yinshan-Yanshan landmass in the north and the Qinling-Dabie landmass in the south. Peat (coal) deposition occurred across a range of terrestrial to coastal environments, including fluvio-lacustrine settings, deltas, shorelines and and tidal flats. Carbonaceous and organic-rich clastic rocks also developed in these areas while organic-rich carbonate rocks were primarily deposited in carbonate platform. The conditions conducive to peat (coal) formation were intricately connected to eustatic fluctuations, which resulted in frequent transgressions and regressions. The sea-level fluctuations during the Pennsylvanian might be, in part, a response to both the waxing and waning of continental ice sheets and tectonic process in the northern margin of the NCB. In contrast, sea-level changes during the early Permian were probably controlled by the tectonic process only. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of palaeogeographical evolution of the NCB during the Carboniferous and Permian transition, in response to eustatic and palaeoclimate change, and sheds light on resource accumulation based on quantitative analyses.

Abstract:A series of tectonic activities induced by the subduction of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) in the Palaeozoic have been recorded in the North China Craton (NCC). Sedimentary strata provide some precious records to reconstruct the basin evolution in the NCC. In this study, we carried out detrital zircon LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating, sandstone modal analysis, bulk‐rock major, and trace elemental measurements for the Sunjiagou and Liujiagou formations in the eastern Ordos Basin to trace the material source. The results show that the sedimentary rocks were mostly sourced from active continental margins. The detrital zircon ages of the Sunjiagou and Liujiagou formations spread from >3,000 to 250 Ma with peaks of main age populations at 2,508, 1,890, 430, and 270 Ma. Based on the age comparison and the southward palaeocurrents, we consider that the source material of these sedimentary rocks comes from the northern margin of the NCC. This in turn indicates that the amalgamation of the PAO and the NCC should have finished at least by the end of the Late Permian.

Abstract:The nothern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) preseves the tectonic imprints of early Paleozoic to Triassic tectonic processes. Here we investigate the geochronology, geochemistry, zircon hafnium and whole rock Nd isotope data on a suite of magmatic rocks from the Ningcheng pyroxenite-gabbro-diorite complex and the Jiwangyingzi Formation in the Inner Mongolia region of the northern NCC. The zircon U-Pb dating identifies multiple stages of mafic to intermediate magmatism from Early Permian (298 +/- 4 Ma) to Middle Triassic (219 +/- 1 Ma) in this area and their hafnium isotopes display diverse mantle sources. An integration of field observations, geochronology and elemental and isotopic geochemistry indicates a complex petrogenetic history for the magmatic suite. The Ningcheng pyroxenite-gabbro-diorite complex is a product of multiple pulses of magmas with crystal fractionation, hybridization and assimilation, with the involvement of melts derived from lithospheric mantle and even the asthenosphere. Our data reveal an increasing involvement of mantle component from Late Permian to Triassic. The features of progressive mantle upwelling correlate with tectonic processes associated with the closure of Paleo-Asian Ocean and subsequent post collisional extension, resulting in active magmatism from Carboniferous to Triassic in this region. Abstract:The amount of zircon U-Pb geochronological data for China has grown rapidly in recent years. Nearly 410,000 items of zircon U-Pb geochronological data, representing more than 7,000 relevant articles in the Elsevier Science Database, have been collected to a database in this research. Statistics on the ages and absolute errors of these collated data, yielded smallest standard errors for (Pb-206/U-238), (Pb-207/U-235), and (Pb-207/Pb-206) ages within respective time intervals of < 1388.96 Ma, 1388.96-3282.52 Ma, and > 3282.52 Ma. The ages and their absolute errors were determined using three main geochronology methods, based on laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS), sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP), and secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) measurements. We compared the influence of these different methods on errors for each age interval. In addition, using a Gaussian model of multi-peak fitting of zircon U-Pb age frequencies, we identified seven growth peaks in zircons from the Chinese continental crust, which are 48.60 Ma, 131.49 Ma, 249.91 Ma, 444.27 Ma, 835.95 Ma, 1860.65 Ma, and 2505.54 Ma. It is clear that there are correspondences between these ages and various geological events, namely, the Wutai movement, Lvliang movement, Jinning movement, Caledonian movement, Indo-China movement, Yanshan movement, and Himalayaorogeny movement, respectively. The time and spatial distributions of these zircons correspond to distinct geological events on the Chinese continent, reflecting its crustal evolution.
Preliminary analysis of the Chinese sub-database of the Chinese crust single-grain zircon U-Pb geochronology database

Abstract:The zircon U-Pb geochronology method has become an indispensable method for geologic research. This paper collected the zircon U-Pb geochronology data scattered in various publications such as journal articles and Master or Doctoral Dissertations in China since 1980s, and built a sub-database of the Chinese single-grain zircon age database. The sub-database covers 2331 documents published by the end of 2017, with valid data reaching 154,768 entries, which can be used for preliminary analysis of the big data and related earth science research. The analysis of the age-age absolute error relationships in the sub-database shows that the errors of Age ((206)pb/U-238), Age (Pb-207/U-235), and Age (Pb-207/Pb-206) are different in different geological time intervals. Because of their smallest errors and best confidences, Age (Pb-206/U-238) , Age (Pb-207/U-235), and Age (Pb-207/Pb-206) can be selected as the recommended ages for different geological time intervals. Age (Ph-206/U-238), Age (Pb-207/U-235) , and Age (Pb-207/Pb-206) can be selected as the recommended age in the age range of less than 1684. 4Ma, 1684.4 -2855. 2Ma, and greater than 2855. 2Ma, respectively, although Age (Pb-207/U-235) is complicated. The recommended age chosen was applied to the comparison of LA-ICP-MS, SHRIMP and SIMS, and it was found that the three different methods are applicable to different geological ages. The recommended age is applied to draw the age-frequency diagram, then Gaussian multi-peak fitting is used to find that there are six growth peaks in zircons in China of 131.71 Ma, 255. 17 Ma , 442. 42Ma , 811. 56Ma , 1868. 36 Ma and 2505. 31 Ma, and seven peaks in the Cenozoic in smaller scales, i. e. , 16. 99Ma, 27. 64Ma, 35. 26Ma, 43. 44Ma, 48. 27Ma, 52. 74Ma and 62. 07Ma. The location distribution of test points which represent every peak and every peak itself can correspond to geological events in the mainland China.
Application of in situ U-Pb carbonate geochronology to Stenian-Tonian successions of North China

Abstract:Linking geological and biological events requires a robust geochronologic framework, which is especially challenging for poorly fossiliferous Precambrian strata. Although this can be achieved through zircon U-Pb dating, only maximum or minimum ages can typically be obtained, with rare interbedded volcanic ash beds providing precise depositional ages. U-Pb dating of authigenic carbonates could potentially become a more widely applicable geochronometer, but only if carbonate minerals can be dated with sufficient precision. A renaissance in carbonate U-Pb geochronology, utilizing the in situ laser ablation method, has opened new doors in the application of this method to geological problems. Here we apply laser ablation U-Pb dating to carbonate-rich sedimentary strata of likely Meso-Neoproterozoic age on the southeastern margin of the North China Craton, resulting in two meaningful U-Pb ages of 1036 ± 45 Ma and 1010 ± 36 Ma (2σ), from early diagenetic fine-grained microspar samples. As well as being mutually consistent, these new ages show that precision approaching the limiting uncertainty of the reference material used (∼2.5% 2σ) can be achieved. Success in this study holds promise for dating other key Precambrian successions.

Unraveling the Early Devonian Provenance of the Longmenshan Region Through Detrital Zircon Records: Implications for Floral Differentiation in South China

Abstract:The Longmenshan region is the geographical boundary between the Sichuan Basin and the eastern Tibetan Plateau, but whether it is the tectonic boundary between the Yangtze Block and Songpan-Garze terrane is still controversial. Meanwhile, the Early Devonian floral differentiation between the Longmenshan region and the southern part of the Yangtze Block, such as Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, also leads to controversy. Here we report U -Pb ages of detrital zircons from Lower Devonian sandstones of the Longmenshan region, providing evidence to discuss the tectonic affinity of the Longmenshan region and possible reasons for the Early Devonian floral differentiation. Detrital zircon U -Pb age patterns show that the Pingyipu Group defines three principal age populations of 2.6-2.4 Ga, 1.2-0.7 Ga, and 0.7-0.5 Ga, with two minor distributions of 1.8-1.5 Ga and 480-420 Ma. This U -Pb age spectrum is consistent with that of the Lower Devonian Danlin Formation of Guizhou, indicating that the Pingyipu Group and the Danlin Formation might share the same or similar sources. Together with fossil evidence, it is suggested that the Devonian sedimentary successions in the Longmenshan region are deposited in the western margin of the Yangtze Block, indicating the western boundary of this block is likely in somewhere to the west of Longmenshan fault, such as the Longriba fault. The Neoproterozoic strata located between the Longmenshan region and Yunnan-Guizhou provinces contain dominant Paleoproterozoic detrital zircons (2.1-1.9 Ga), however, this population is almost absent in the Pingyipu Group and the Danlin Formation, suggesting that there might not exist a denudation area (about 3000 masl) to supply sediments for Lower Devonian strata and separate the Longmenshan region and Guizhou. Therefore, the Early Devonian floral differentiation between the Longmenshan region and Yunnan-Guizhou provinces might not be caused by tectonic or mountainous barriers as previously suggested, but instead, might be caused by different depositional ages of the strata at a finer temporal resolution and environmental factors, such as different climatic conditions and/or habitat heterogeneity. Abstract:In the last few decades, the Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic tectonic evolution of South China has been quite controversial. The focus of debate is on both the age of ophiolites and the Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic geological and geodynamic environment. The Huaiyu Domain is located in the NE part of South China and exposes numerous significant geological features that are keys to understand the tectonics of South China. In this paper, we present some new evidence on stratigraphy, petrology and SHRIMP zircon U-Pb geochronology, and together with other geological and geochemical data available in the literature, and the following conclusions are suggested: 1) The eastern Jiangnan ophiolites belt, dated at 858±11 Ma by SHRIMP zircon U-Pb method, was generated during the Neoproterozoic, but not the Late Paleozoic; 2) The sedimentary rocks associated with these oceanic rocks do not contain radiolarian but Neoproterozoic acritarchs; 3) During Permian–Early Triassic times, the Huaiyu Domain was dominantly characterized by a shallow sea depositional environment since deep sea sediments are absent; and 4) The pre-Devonian tectonics of South China has been reworked by late polyphase tectonism through the Triassic and the Cretaceous periods. A Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic deep marine domain floored by oceanic crust never existed in the study area. The geochronological and structural data do not comply with a Late Paleozoic– Early Mesozoic South China Ocean.
Biostratigraphy and correlation of several Permian-Triassic boundary sections in southwestern China

Abstract:Detailed investigations of five complete Permian-Triassic boundary sections in southwestern China demonstrate the transitional nature of the Permian-Triassic boundary and the presence of a white clay at the boundary in the working area. The uppermost Permian is represented by the Neochonetes substrophomenoides-Notothyris crassa-Waagenites pigmaea brachiopod assemblage or the Clarkina changxingensis-C. deflecta conodont zone. The transitional beds of basal Triassic are represented by the Lingula fuyuanensis-Crurithyris flabelliformis brachiopod assemblage, or the Pteria ussurica variabilis-Towapteria scythicum-Eumorphotis multiformis bivalve assemblage, which is overlain everywhere by the Pseudoclaraia wangi bivalve zone. Faunal correlations show that the stratigraphy and faunal composition of the Permian-Triassic boundary sections in southwestern China do not differ substantially from the other two Global Stratotype Section Point candidates in south China and the transitional beds approximately correspond to the Otoceras woodwardi ammonoid zone, but the Hindeodus parvus conodont zone only corresponds to the upper part of transitional beds.
Subduction history of the Paleo-Asian oceanic slab along the northern margin of the North China Craton: A case study of zircons and cherts from central Jilin Province, NE China

Abstract:This paper presents U-Pb ages and Hf isotope data for detrital zircons and whole-rock geochemical data for siliceous-clastic sedimentary rocks of the Shitoukoumen Formation, central Jilin Province, NE China. The new data combined with published data for the northern North China Craton enable us to constrain the temporal changes in crustal thickness along the Solonker−Xar Moron−Changchun−Yanji suture belt (SXCYB). The Shitoukoumen Formation contains ophiolitic lenses, radiolarian-bearing cherts, and volcanic-sedimentary units of various ages. A radiolarian-bearing volcanic-sedimentary unit exhibits a Bouma sequence, in which detrital zircons from a rhyolitic tuff and siliceous-clastic sedimentary rocks yielded youngest ages of 278−273 Ma, which constrain the depositional age of the unit. The geochemical compositions of the cherts suggest the pelagic deposits contain some continent-derived clastic material and may be near-trench gravity flow deposits. The dominantly depleted zircon εHf(t) values of the sedimentary rocks in the Shitoukoumen Formation record extensive crustal growth during the Paleozoic. The variations in the crustal thicknesses during the Paleozoic to early Mesozoic record a tectonic transition from subduction initiation, mature continental arc, and finally to Paleo-Asian ocean closure. The thickest crust (∼58 km) at ca. 245 Ma might have been related to an orogenic peak during the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean along the SXCYB.

Abstract:U–Pb geochronologic and Hf isotopic results of seven sandstones collected from Late Carboniferous through Early Triassic strata of the south-central part of the North China Craton record a dramatic provenance shift near the end of the Late Carboniferous. Detrital zircons from the Late Carboniferous sandstones are dominated by the Early Paleozoic components with positive εHf(t) values, implying the existence of a significant volume of juvenile crust at this age in the source regions. Moreover, there are also three minor peaks at ca. 2.5Ga, 1.87Ga and 1.1–0.9Ga. Based on our new data, in conjunction with existing zircon ages and Hf isotopic data in the North China Craton (NCC), Central China Orogenic Belt (CCOB) and Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), it can be concluded that Early Paleozoic and Neoproterozoic detritus in the south-central NCC were derived from the CCOB. Zircons with ages of 1.9–1.7Ga were derived from the NCC. However, the oldest components can't be distinguished, possibly from either the NCC or the CCOB, or both. In contrast, detrital zircons from the Permian and Triassic sandstones are characterized by three major groups of U–Pb ages (2.6–2.4Ga, 1.9–1.7Ga and Late Paleozoic ages). Specially, most of the Late Paleozoic zircons show negative εHf(t) values, similar to the igneous zircons from intrusive rocks of the Inner Mongolia Paleo-Uplift (IMPU), indicating that the Late Paleozoic detritus were derived from the northern part of the NCC. This provenance shift could be approximately constrained at the end of the Late Carboniferous and probably hints that tectonic uplift firstly occurred between the CCOB and the NCC as a result of the collision between the South and North Qinling microcontinental terranes, and then switched to the domain between the CAOB and the NCC. Additionally, on the basis of Lu–Hf isotopic data, we reveal the pre-Triassic crustal growth history for the NCC. In comparison among the three crustal growth curves obtained from modern river sands, our samples, and the Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, we realize that old components are apparently underestimated by zircons from the younger sedimentary rocks and modern river sands. Hence, cautions should be taken when using this method to investigate growth history of continental crust.
U–Pb Ages and Lu–Hf Isotopes of Detrital Zircons from the Southern Qinling Orogen: Implications for Precambrian to Phanerozoic Tectonics in Central China

Abstract:The Qinling Orogen, central China, was constructed during the Mesozoic collision between the North China and Yangtze continental plates. The orogen includes four tectonic units, from north to south, the Huaxiong Block (reactivated southern margin of the North China Craton), North Qinling Accretion Belt, South Qinling Fold Belt (or block) and Songpan Fold Belt, evolved from the northernmost Paleo-Tethys Ocean separating the Gondwana and Laurentia supercontinents. Here we employ detrital zircons from the Early Cretaceous alluvial sediments within the Qinling Orogen to trace the tectonic evolution of the orogen. The U–Pb ages of the detrital zircon grains from the Early Cretaceous Donghe Group sediments in the South Qinling Fold Belt cluster around 2600–2300Ma, 2050–1800Ma, 1200–700Ma, 650–400Ma and 350–200Ma, corresponding to the global Kenorland, Columbia, Rodinia, Gondwana and Pangaea supercontinent events, respectively. The distributions of ages and εHf(t) values of zircon grains show that the Donghe Group sediments have a complex source comprising components mainly recycled from the North Qinling Accretion Belt and the North China Craton, suggesting that the South Qinling Fold Belt was a part of the united Qinling–North China continental plate, rather than an isolated microcontinent, during the Devonian–Triassic. The youngest age peak of 350–200Ma reflects the magmatic event related to subduction and termination of the Mian-Lue oceanic plate, followed by the collision between the Yangtze Craton and the united Qinling–North China continent that came into existence at the Triassic–Jurassic transition. The interval of 208–145Ma between the sedimentation of the Early Cretaceous Donghe Group and the youngest age of detrital zircons was coeval with the post-subduction collision between the Yangtze and the North China continental plates in Jurassic.
