Abstract:We report here a detailed investigation of mineral chemistry, phase modelling and geochronology for garnetites from the Bashiwake ultrahigh pressure (UHP) terrane, South Altyn Tagh, West China. Three generations of mineral assemblages including two stages of melting were identified. The first generation is represented by the zoning with decreasing grossular and increasing pyrope and multiphase inclusions in garnet core. It records an early‐stage prograde evolution from amphibolite facies to eclogite facies (1.7–2.5 GPa/710–850 °C) where the first stage of melting occurs. The second generation is characterized by the zoning in garnet mantle with increasing grossular and nearly constant pyrope, defining a later‐stage prograde evolution to UHP peak with the minimum condition of 6.5–7.0 GPa/990 °C. The pressure is consistent with that constrained from the pigeonite exsolution particularly along (401) planes in clinopyroxene. The third generation includes the presence of perthite, plagioclase along with amphibole, suggesting the decompression from eclogite facies to HP–ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT) granulite facies (~3.3–1.2 GPa/960–1020 °C) coupled with the second stage of melting. It is for the first time to get two metamorphic ages about 500 Ma and 486 Ma using in situ SIMS zircon dating which represent the prograde eclogite facies and decompressional granulite facies stages, suggesting the rocks staying at mantle depths for ~14 million years. The garnetites have recorded a complete metamorphic P–T–t history of continental ultradeep subduction to mantle depths of ~200 km or more followed by diapiring exhumation to the crust bottom.

Abstract:Metamorphic rocks encode invaluable information on the burial and exhumation history of rocks that is critical to our understanding of orogens. In this work, zircon U−Pb dating, pseudosection, and garnet zoning modeling were performed on samples from the North Altyn area, SE Tarim Craton, NW China. Zircon U−Pb geochronological data indicate that the peak metamorphism occurred at ca. 2.0 Ga. Pseudosection isopleth thermobarometry using garnet growth zoning of the sample from the northern part of the North Altyn area (Kalatashtagh) reveals a decompression and heating path to a peak temperature of 735 °C and 0.74 GPa under the equilibrium crystallization model. The preservation of growth zoning under high temperature requires relatively rapid cooling. In contrast, garnet from the southern part of the North Altyn area (Aktashtagh) preserves diffusion zoning. Metamorphic peak occurs at 670−735 °C and 0.67−0.73 GPa, which suggests a high dT/dP-type metamorphism. Diffusion zoning modeling suggests an extremely slow cooling rate of 1−5 °C/m.y., which indicates prolonged (∼100 m.y.) crustal residence time at high temperature. This requires a long-term heat supply, most likely from radiogenic heat from buried sediments or heat conducted from the asthenosphere. The high dT/dP and slow cooling rate, combined with extensive crustal anatexis from previous studies, indicate that the late Paleoproterozoic North Altyn Orogen is a long-lived hot orogen rather than a subduction−accretionary complex. We propose a tectonic model that involves a ca. 2.1−2.0 Ga arc−back-arc system in the SE Tarim Craton. The back-arc basin was subsequently closed by northward underthrusting due to arc−arc/continental collision at ca. 2.0−1.95 Ga during the integration of the Tarim Craton into the Columbia/Nuna supercontinent.

Abstract:The Delingha paragneiss suite in the Quanji massif, southeastern Tarim Craton, is composed of mica schist, paragneiss, leptynite and quartzite, similar to the 'khondalite suites' described from elsewhere in the world. The mica schist is rich in Al2O3 (up to similar to 26 wt%) and contains graphite and diagnostic minerals including sillimanite and garnet, with metamorphism under amphibolite-facies to locally granulite-facies conditions as manifested by association with amphibolite and granulite. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages and geochemical data indicate that the protolith materials of the Delingha paragneiss suite were mainly sourced from 2.20 to 2.45 Ga granites, felsic volcanic rocks and TTG, and were deposited at 2.17-1.92 Ga. The detrital zircon Hf and whole-rock Nd isotopes document important crustal growth at similar to 2.5-2.7 Ga. The detrital zircon age spectra, the whole rock Nd and zircon Hf model ages, the low-maturity of the protolith, and short-distance transportation suggest that the detritus were derived from the underlying Delingha Complex and the lower Dakendaban sub-Group. The timing of magmatic activities in the source region, the depositional age and metamorphic histories of the Delingha paragneiss suite are all comparable to those recorded in the khondalite belt along northern margin of the Ordos Block in the North China Craton. Our study shows that the 2.2-2.45 Ga magmatic rocks were generated in arc or active continental margin settings, suggesting a prolonged subduction and accretion history prior to final amalgamation (similar to 2.5-1.8 Ga) to form the unified North China Craton and the assembly of the Tarim Craton in NW China. Abstract:Garnet-orthoamphibole rock (GOR) from southern Hengshan of the North China Craton (NCC) shows a prominent porphyroblastic texture involving garnet, orthoamphibole, kyanite, sillimanite, chlorite, rutile and quartz, with or without talc, hornblende and staurolite. Garnet develops coronae or symplectite assemblages of cordierite, anthophyllite, ilmenite and quartz. The P-T and P-H2O evolution for three representative samples were determined by using pseudosections calculated with THERMOCALC. Generalized prograde paths are inferred from subtle garnet growth zoning, chlorite compositions and inclusion assemblages in garnet. The peak mineral assemblages are predicted to be characteristic of presence of garnet, gedrite, chlorite, kyanite and rutile under P-T conditions estimated to be 9-12 kbar and 650-670 degrees C. The post-peak history is characterized by isothermal decompression, developing coronae and symplectite assemblages under a mix of fluid-present and fluid-absent conditions. An idealized P-X-Mg [=Mg/(Mg + Fe) in mole] pseudosection drawn at T=655 degrees C and a P-M(H2O) pseudosection at T=630 degrees C suggest that the garnet-free cordierite-orthoamphibole rock (COR) can form from decompression of GOR assemblages when the rock is high-in X-Mg value or the decompression temperature is low. Zircon U-Pb dating yields a metamorphic age of 1964 +/- 25 Ma (similar to 1.95 Ga) and a protolith age of 2533 +/- 14 Ma, where the former was interpreted to represent the prograde- or peak stages of metamorphism. This paper validates an argument that the amalgamation of the NCC via a crust thickening event occurred at similar to 1.95 Ga, followed by an isothermal decompression and a prolonged nearly isobaric cooling process from 1.90 to 1.78 Ga. Synchronous Crustal Growth and Reworking Recorded in Late Paleoproterozoic Granitoids in the Northern Tarim Craton: in Situ Zircon U-Pb-Hf-O Isotopic and Geochemical Constraints and Tectonic Implications

Abstract:Identifying the relative contribution of various crustal and mantle materials in the source of granitoids is crucial for the study of granite petrogenesis and crustal growth. Extensive and diverse late Paleoproterozoic metamorphosed granitoids are exposed in the western Kuruktag block, northern Tarim craton, marking an important tectonothermal event. Here, we report sensitive high-reso lution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb ages, in situ zircon Hf-O isotopic data, and whole-rock geochemical data for a variety of granitoids, including monzogranite, quartz diorite/quartz monzonite, garnet-bearing granodiorite, tonalite, and trondhjemite. Geochronological data show that all these granitoids were emplaced in a relatively short period at ca. 1.93-1.94 Ga and were immediately metamorphosed at ca. 1.91-1.92 Ga. In situ zircon Hf-O isotopic data suggest that both mantle-derived juvenile materials and supracrustal rocks (i.e., the Xingditag Group) were involved in magma genesis. The sodic trondhjemite and tonalite were generated by partial melting of newly underplated mafic lower crust originating from both depleted and relatively enriched mantle, with some assimilation of sedimentary materials. In contrast, the other (mostly high-K) granitoids (monzo granite, quartz diorite/quartz monzonite, and garnetbearing granodiorite) were produced by partial melting of metasedimentary rocks due to intrusion of, and mixing with, variable amounts of mantle-derived mafic magmas, suggesting that these granitoids may also have recorded substantial crustal growth. These petrogenetic interpretations imply that most granitoids in the study area were a result of synchronous crustal growth and reworking, which must be carefully considered in models of continental growth. The adakitic trondhjemite and tonalite have high Sr/Y, La/Yb, Gd/Yb, Nb/Ta, and Zr/Sm ratios, suggesting partial melting with a rutile eclogite residue and implying significant crustal thickening (> 50 km). This tectonothermal event most likely occurred in an Andean-type continental arc and was followed by continental collision at ca. 1.85 Ga along the newly recognized late Paleoproterozoic North Tarim orogen. Such an accretion-to-collisional orogen implies an interior position of this area within the Columbia (or Nuna) supercontinent. Based on geological correlations, a Tarim-North China connection is suggested for Columbia reconstruction.

Abstract:Granulite occupies the root of orogenic belts, and understanding its formation and evolution may provide critical information on orogenic processes. Previous studies have mainly focused on garnet-bearing high-pressure and medium-pressure granulites, whereas the metamorphic evolution and pressure-temperature (P-T) paths of garnet-absent, low-pressure granulites are more difficult to constrain. Here, we present zircon U-Pb ages and mineral chemistry for a suite of newly discovered two-pyroxene granulites in the North Altyn Tagh area, southeastern Tarim craton, northwestern China. Conventional geothermobarometry and phase equilibrium modeling revealed that these rocks experienced a peak granulite-facies metamorphism at T = 790-890 degrees C and P = 8-11 kbar. The mineral compositions and retrograde symplectites record a clockwise cooling and exhumation path, possibly involving near-isothermal decompression followed by near-isobaric cooling. Zircon U-Pb dating yielded a ca. 1.97 Ga metamorphic age, which likely represents the initial cooling age, based on Ti-in-zircon thermometry. Combined with regional geological records, we interpret that these granulites originated from the basement rocks of a late Paleoproterozoic magmatic arc that was subsequently involved in a collisional orogen in the southern Tarim craton, presumably related to the assembly of the Columbia/Nuna supercontinent. The clockwise P-T paths of the granulites record crustal thickening and burial followed by crustal thinning and exhumation in the upper plate of the collisional orogen. Our data indicate that the initial exhumation of this orogen probably occurred no later than ca. 1.97 Ga, which is supported by widespread 1.93-1.85 Ga postorogenic magmatism in this area.

Abstract:Garnet porphyroblasts with complex growth zonation and mineral inclusion are recognized in the ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) eclogites from Donghai area, southern Sulu orogenic belt. By investigating of petrography and mineral chemistry, four metamorphic stages have been revealed. They are the prograde epidote-amphibolite facies, coesite-eclogite facies, retrograde quartz-eclogite facies and amphibolite facies metamorphism. Using the compositions of the mantle segment of porphyroblastic garnets (with the lowest Fe/Mg ratio) and adjacent omphacite inclusion, and the related geothermobarometers, P-T conditions of >900℃ and 4. 1 -4.5GPa are estimated for the stage of UHP metamorphism. Combining with the P-T conditions of other stages of metamorphism, a clockwise P-T path are reconstructed. It is characterized by the prograde trajectory is parallel nearly to the segment of retrogression, and the early retrograde metamorphism with coupling of decompression with a temperature decrease. Preservation of the growth zoning of eclogitic garnets suggests that the UHP rocks have a short residence time before the retrograde metamorphism and have a very high uplift rate. A temperature decrease during the early retrograde metamorphism of the UHP eclogites may be another favorable condition for preservation of garnet growth zoning.

Abstract:The Ganzi–Litang fault zone, an outstanding tectonic element in the eastern Tibetan Plateau has been intensively debated as an in-situ suture zone marking relict of a subducted Palaeo-Tethyan oceanic crust or a failed intracontinental rift. This paper reports the garnet amphibolites discovered along the Ganzi–Litang fault zone, eastern Tibetan Plateau. These garnet amphibolites are characterized by the garnet–hornblende–rutile–sphene–plagioclase–quartz assemblage. Conventional geothermobarometry figures out the metamorphic temperature and pressure conditions at 582–626°C and 1.61–1.82 GPa, respectively. Geochemical analysis (no Nb–Ta deletions and left-inclined to flat patterns of rare-earth elements) indicates that the garnet amphibolites could represent metamorphic product of the mid-ocean-ridge (MORB)-type mafic rocks that were contaminated by a mantle plume. The protolith of the garnet amphibolites was dated at 236 Ma using in-situ U–Pb zircon method, and the retrograde metamorphism was dated at 218 Ma using in-situ U–Pb sphene method. A comprehensive analysis combined with the development of the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean and the Yidun arc through geologic time indicates a Triassic to Early Jurassic age (236–195 Ma) for the metamorphism of the garnet amphibolites. The low geothermal gradient of 9.8ºC/km and the N-MORB nature of the garnet amphibolites suggest a subduction-zone environment for the high-pressure metamorphism. Therefore, the Ganzi–Litang fault zone is a Palaeo-Tethyan suture separating the Yidun arc and the Songpan–Ganzi terrane, representing the relics of a branch of the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean that was contaminated by a mantle plume.

The Sanweishan-Dongshuigou Na-rich rhyolite and granite formed at ca. 1.84-1.82 Ga exhibit enriched light rare earth elements (LREEs), depleted heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and insignificant Eu anomalies, with low Y (3.44-6.39 ppm) and Yb (0.29-0.53 ppm) but relatively high Mg# (54.5-58.5) and Sr (368-643 ppm), and variable Cr (5.58-29.7 ppm) and Ni (2.82-15.6 ppm) contents, as well as negative to positive εHf(t) (-6.1-+6.4) values, indicating subduction-related arc magmatism accompanied by crustal-mantle interaction. The Shuwozi granitic gneiss crystallized at ca. 1.81 Ga displays S-type granite affinity (A/CNK>1.1) and has low Sr/Y (1.0-1.3) and (Gd/Yb)N (1.50-1.98) ratios, and negative εHf(t) (-20.3 to -5.1) and εNd(t) (-4.3) values, suggesting partial melting of crustal rocks at shallow crustal depth. The Hanxia amphibolite with protolith age of ca. 1.86-1.84 Ga is featured by depleted LREE and flat HREE patterns, insignificant Eu anomalies, low Nb/Ta (11.0-12.0), Ta/Yb (0.02-0.04), Th/Yb (0.01-0.04) and Th/Ta (0.7-1.3) but high Ti/V (22.9-26.7) ratios, and positive εNd(t) (2.7-4.0) values, resembling depleted mantle-derived N-MORB- or BABB (back-arc-basin basalt) geochemical affinities. The metapelite, characterized by mineral assemblage of garnet, biotite, sillimanite, plagioclase, K-feldspar, quartz and rutile, documented ca. 1.81 Ga upper amphibolite-facies metamorphism with peak metamorphic P-T conditions being restricted to 690-810 °C and 5.3-6.4 kbar based on conventional geothermobarometry. These magmatic and metamorphic rocks were variously altered and deformed during Paleozoic (ca. 430-360 Ma) tectonothermal event. Integrated with published data, it can be inferred that the Dunhuang terrane underwent ca. 1.89-1.81 Ga subduction-collisional orogeny related to late Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.0-1.8 Ga) global assembly of the Columbia supercontinent, similar as those recorded in the northern Tarim Craton, Alxa Block and Quanji massif, and then overprinted Paleozoic (ca. 440-360 Ma) orogenic process, corresponding to the previously proposed composite orogeny in the Dunhuang terrane.
