Abstract:Diverse Neoarchean granitoid assemblages, which generally include tonalites−trondhjemites−granodiorites (TTGs) and various K-rich granitoids, are prevalent in most basement terranes of the North China Craton. However, the Hengshan terrane is an exceptional case in the North China Craton; it is dominated by late Neoarchean sodic diorite-TTGs (DTTGs) and sanukitoids. These sanukitoids are the only high-K granitoids and show Mg-rich chemical features. The late Neoarchean DTTGs and sanukitoids were generated at ca. 2486−2537 Ma and show an intimate spatial association. The granitoid assemblages of the DTTGs and sanukitoids are characterized by high Mg# [100 × Mg/(Mg + Fetotal)] values (43−65) and enriched in light rare earth elements, large ion lithophile elements, heterogeneous zircon Lu−Hf (εHf = −1.6 to +7.4), and whole-rock Sm−Nd (εNd = +0.9 to +4.2) isotopic components, which indicates that they may be derived from varying degrees of interactions between mantle peridotite and subduction-related materials. Combined with the relatively high apparent geothermal gradient (∼17 ± 2 °C/km) and the relatively low basal heat flow of continental crust (∼25 ± 5 mW m−2), the crust-mantle interaction process indicates that the occurrence of late Neoarchean high-Mg magmatism was closely related to warm oceanic slab subduction in the Hengshan terrane, and the featured lithological association of DTTGs and sanukitoids most likely developed in the active continental margin at the end of the Archean.

Abstract:The composition of Archean granitoid rocks changed from predominantly tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) gneisses in the early Archean (4−3 Ga) to diversified granitoid rock assemblages in the late Archean (3.0−2.5 Ga), marking a crucial transformation in the geodynamic processes of early Earth. However, the reason for this major transition remains enigmatic because the petrogenetic features of different granitoid assemblages and their crust-mantle interactions during different periods are poorly understood. We use variations in the spatial-temporal distribution, lithological association, chemical composition, and petrogenesis of Neoarchean (2.7−2.5 Ga) granitoids and inferred correlative crust-mantle interactions in the Eastern Liaoning Range (ELR) of the northeastern North China craton to explore this geodynamic transition. The early Neoarchean (ca. 2.7 Ga) ELR granitoids were dominated by TTG gneisses, and the late Neoarchean (2.6−2.5 Ga) ELR granitoid typology and compositions became more complex, changing into TTGs and more K2O-rich granitoid rocks. The TTGs can be subdivided into a high-Ca group and a low-Ca group: The 2.71−2.68 Ga high-Ca group TTG magma originated from partial melting of subducted juvenile oceanic crust, and the low-Ca group TTG magma was derived from fractionation crystallization of the high-Ca group TTG magma. The chemical composition of the magmatic sources played a dominant role on the 2.60−2.50 Ga TTG magmatism: the high-Ca and low-Ca group TTG magmas came from low-K mafic rocks and tonalites, respectively. The 2.58−2.49 Ga K2O-rich granitoids can be divided into three petrogenetic series: (1) The high-Ca-Mg group K2O-rich granitoid magma originated from partial melting of high-K mafic rocks, (2) the low-Ca-Mg group K2O-rich granitoid magma was derived from partial melting of sedimentary rocks, and (3) the transition group K2O-rich granitoid magma was sourced from metagreywackes. The 2.71−2.68 Ga TTGs were generated in an island arc belt, and subducted slab melting and subsequent magmatic differentiation were the dominant mechanisms of the TTG magmatism. The 2.60−2.50 Ga diversified granitoids were formed in the oceanic-continental subduction process under the active continental margin; the complicated oceanic slab subduction and arc-arc and arc-continent collisions contributed to the diversity of late Neoarchean granitoid magmatism.

Abstract:The Lantian-Xiaoqinling region, located at the southern margin of the North China Craton (S-NCC), exposes large-scale Late Mesozoic granitoids associated with molybdenum and hydrothermal gold deposits. This study presents zircon U-Pb-Hf isotope, whole-rock element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data of granitoids from two representative plutons (Laoniushan and Huashan) of the Lantian-Xiaoqinling region including previous data from the Lantian pluton. Zircon UPb dating supports a prolonged magmatic history from c. 150 to 130 Ma. Different to the thick continental crust-derived high Sr/Y granitoids from the Dabie Mts., the granitoids of the Lantian-Xiaoqinling region are ordinary calc-alkaline granitoids which show evidence for fractional crystallization, implying no need for the existence of a thick continental crust during magmatism. The plutons share similar high whole-rock initial 87Sr/86Sr values ranging from 0.7070 to 0.7109, but variable εNd(t) (−23.4 to −9.0) and zircon εHf(t) values (−46.9 to −2.7) as well as continental crust-like initial Pb isotopes with 206Pb/204Pb(t) ratios of 17.1 to 17.9; 207Pb/204Pb(t) of 15.40 to 15.57 and 208Pb/204Pb(t) of 37.6 to 38.35. Nd-Hf-Pb isotopic compositions are more depleted compared to ancient lower NCC crust as represented by the Taihua and Xiong'er Groups and suggest involvement of some juvenile materials into the magma source. Positive correlation between SiO2 and εNd(t) values suggests that the juvenile material was silica-rich with slightly negative εNd(t) values. Such material cannot be produced from a mantle source as previously stated. These compositional features make Neoproterozoic continental crust of Yangtze Block a likely source for the juvenile material. It is argued that the juvenile material originated from partial melting of subducted Neoproterozoic continental crust with abundant black shale. We propose that the Late Mesozoic granitoid plutons in the Lantian-Xiaoqinling region stem from a composite source, including rocks similar to the ancient lower NCC crust and a juvenile felsic melt derived from the subducted Yangtze plate. Heat input and melting was triggered by asthenosphere upwelling caused by subduction of the Paleo-Pacific oceanic plate.

Abstract:Granitoid gneisses dominated by tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic (TTG) compositions, with metamorphic supracrustal rocks consisting of sedimentary and volcanic rocks, are widely exposed in the Eastern Hebei terrane, North China Craton (NCC). This study presents systematic zircon U–Pb geochronological and whole-rock geochemical data of the Neoarchean granitoid gneisses and supracrustal rocks in Eastern Hebei. Zircon U–Pb isotopic dating for the representative samples reveals that magmatic precursors of granitoid gneisses were emplaced between 2524 ± 7 and 2503 ± 12 Ma, and the protoliths of the pelitic granulites were deposited in the Late Neoarchean era. Both of them have been subjected to granulite facies metamorphism during 2508 ± 10 to 2468 ± 33 Ma, coeval with the intrusion of syenogranitic pegmatite (2488 ± 5 Ma). Zircon ages of 2.45–2.01 Ga obtained from the analyzed samples were considered mixed data from 2.53–2.48 Ga and 1.9–1.8 Ga and were chronologically meaningless. Paleoproterozoic metamorphic zircon ages of 1.9–1.8 Ga were usually neglected because of hardly being obtained from TTG gneisses and supracrustal rocks. The tectonic regime during the Neoarchean era was considered to be dominated by vertical tectonism in the Eastern Hebei terrane.
Nd‐Sr Isotopic Geochemistry of the Late Archean‐Paleoproterozoic Granitoids in the Lüliang‐Wutai Terrain, North China Craton, and Implications for Petrogenesis

Abstract:Abstract: In this paper we report geochemical and Nd‐Sr isotopic data for a late Archean gneissic granitic pluton (Hengling pluton), an early Paleoproterozoic complex (Xipan complex) and a late Paleoproterozoic granitic pluton (Yunzhongshan granites) from the Lüliang‐Wutai terrain, North China, to trace the source of these late Archean‐Paleoproterozoic granitoids and, particularly, to understand the nature and mechanism of continental growth at that time. The Hengling granitic gneisses (ca. 2.51 Ga) are characterized by high Na2O and LILEs, TTG‐like REE patterns (highly depleted HREE and minor Eu anomalies) and moderately depleted Nd‐Sr isotopic compositions (∍Nd(t) =1.2‐2.7, ISr=0.7015‐0.7019), and were considered as being products of arc magmatism that was developed upon the North China craton. The Xipan complex (ca. 2.2 Ga) contain gabbroic diorite and monzonite, mostly being Na2O‐rich, highly fractionated REE patterns and isotopically enriched (∍Nd(t) =−1.5 to −4.1, ISr=0.7038‐0.706). The gabbroic diorites probably originated from melting of an enriched mantle source, but significantly contaminated by lower crustal material, and the monzonites probably represent a product of a mixture between the gabbroic dioritic magma and granitic melts of crustal origin. The Yunzhongshan post‐collisional granitoids (ca. 1.8 Ga) are characterized by high‐K affinity and highly‐enriched and homogeneous Nd isotopic compositions (∍Nd(t) = −4.9 to −5.7), although they split into two groups in terms of REE patterns: one group showing elevated HREE (and Sc, Y and Zr) with significant negative Eu anomalies and the other showing highly depleted HREE and, to a lesser extent, mid‐REE with negligible Eu anomalies. These granites are genetically related to a process of extensional collapse of a thickened orogen. They formed through magma mixing between mantle‐derived basaltic magmas and crust‐derived granitic melts, followed by significant fractionation of ferromagnesian phases (like hornblende and Cpx) and feldspar and accessory zircons. Some Yunzhongshan granites show very old Nd model ages (2.9‐3.0 Ga), suggesting the existence of continental crust older than 2.7 Ga, which is supported by our zircon Hf isotopic data for these granites.
Geochemistry and Zircon U-Pb-Hf Isotopes of the Late Neoarchean Granodiorite-Monzogranite-Quartz Syenite Intrusions in the Northern Liaoning Block, North China Craton: Petrogenesis and Implications for Geodynamic Processes

Abstract:Late Neoarchean weakly foliated to massive granodiorite-monzogranite-quartz syenite intrusions are widely distributed in the Northern Liaoning Block, North China Craton. LA-ICP-MS zircon dating reveals that these rocks were emplaced during 2.56-2.53 Ga and underwent regional metamorphism at similar to 2.51 Ga. These granitoid rocks that contain abundant K-feldspar and high K2O contents with high K2O/Na2O ratios can be subdivided into four lithological types based on their lithological and geochemical characteristics, including porphyritic granodiorites, medium-grained granodiorites, medium-grained monzogranites and porphyritic quartz syenitic gneisses. The porphyritic granodiorites contain biotite as the main mafic mineral, and are characterized by high (La/Yb)N (16-60) and Sr/Y (46-93) ratios, low Yb and Y contents, and weakly positive Eu anomalies for most samples. They also show depletion of Nb, Ta and Ti in the primitive mantle-normalized spidergrams, with zircon epsilon(Hf)(t(2)) values of +3.8 to +6.3, suggesting that they were derived from partial melting of juvenile high-K mafic rocks at the lower crust. The medium-grained granodiorites have major mafic minerals of hornblende and biotite. They display zircon epsilon(Hf)(t(2)) values (+4.6 to +7.5) similar to the porphyritic granodiorites, and have higher CaO contents, molar CaO/(MgO+FeOtot) ratios and Yb, Y contents, with relatively lower (La/Yb)(N) (9-34) and Sr/Y (29-43) ratios for most samples. They show weakly negative Eu and Sr anomalies for most samples, with significant Nb, Ta and Ti depletion, indicating that they might be produced by partial melting of calcalkaline volcanic sources with higher CaO contents at relatively higher levels of the lower crust, compared with the porphyritic granodiorites. The medium-grained monzogranites show the highest Si02 contents (69.71-77.64 wt%), strongly to moderately fractionated REE patterns ((La/Yb)N = 25-69 for most samples), and weakly positive to significantly negative Eu and Sr anomalies, with zircon epsilon(Hf)(t2) values of +2.4 to +4.7, indicating that they may be produced by partial melting of metagreywackes at middle to lower crustal levels. The porphyritic quartz syenitic gneisses exhibit the highest K2O concentrations of 5.11-7.05 wt% and are attributed to the shoshonitic series, and they are featured by high (La/Yb) ratios (34-45), and positive Eu and Sr anomalies, with zero-straddling zircon epsilon(Hf)(t(2)) values (-2.4 to +4.1). We consider that they might be derived from partial melting of a mixed source of juvenile mafic rocks and ancient continental materials in the deep lower crust.Integrating the available data from the previous studies, we conclude that a late Neoarchean active continental margin setting can account for the generation of these granodiorite-monzogranite-quartz syenite intrusions. Guangtoushan Granites and Their Enclaves: Implications for Triassic Mantle Upwelling in the Northern Margin of the North China Craton

Abstract:Mineral electron microprobe, bulk rock major, trace elements and Nd isotopes, and zircon U–Pb and Hf isotopic data are reported for granites and dioritic enclaves from the Guangtoushan granitic complex in the northern margin of the North China Craton. The zircon U–Pb dating identifies two stages of magmatism. The early stage enclave and host granite have identical ages (250±2Ma) and similar bulk rock Nd isotopes (εNd(t)=−11.5 to −12.2) as well as similar zircon Hf isotopes (εHf(t)=−13.3 to −17.4). However, although the late stage enclave (206±2Ma), host granite (208±1Ma) and leucogranite (207±3Ma) display comparable ages, but exhibit distinct isotopic features: the granite displays moderate bulk rock Nd isotopic value (εNd(t)=−8.3) and zircon εHf(t) from −2.6 to −10.4; the enclave shows least negative bulk rock εNd(t) of −3.9 and zircon εHf(t) from 0 to −5.4; and the leucogranite possesses more pronounced negative bulk rock Nd (εNd(t)=−17.2) and zircon Hf isotopic compositions (εHf(t)=−6.2 to −19.0). An integration of field observations, geochronology, geochemistry and zircon Hf isotopic data points to a complex petrogenetic history, where the early stage enclave–granite pair is a product of the early crystallization of felsic magmas that evolved from a mafic magma, whereas the late stage enclave and granite were derived by magma mixing. The late stage leucogranite is considered as a product of remelting of Phanerozoic igneous rocks within this region. The Guangtoushan granitic complex offers robust evidence for a gradual mantle upwelling during Triassic in the northern margin of the North China Craton.

Abstract:The Jianping gneissic terrane (JPGT), Western Liaoning Province (WLP) at the northwestern margin of the Eastern Block of the North China Craton is one of the major Neoarchean high-grade metamorphic terranes. The region is composed dominantly of metamorphosed volcanic and pyroclastic rocks and granitoid gneisses. Geological and petrological features together with geochemical data suggest that the magmatic precursors of these granitoid gneisses are tonalite, trondhjemite, granodiorite (TTG), diorite and monzogranite. Whereas the TTGs show strong gneissic fabric, the monzogranitic rocks are only weakly gneissic and generally display massive structures. LA-ICPMS zircon U–Pb isotopic analyses reveal that the dioritic and TTG gneisses formed at 2506–2532Ma, followed by the emplacement of the monzogranitic gneisses at ∼2496Ma. These granitoid gneisses can be classified into two groups: a low silica group (LSG) and a high silica group (HSG). Detailed petrogenetic studies suggest that the dioritic gneisses (LSG) were derived from the partial melting of an enriched mantle source metasomatized by slab fluids, whereas the tonalitic and granodioritic gneisses of the LSG were produced by the partial melting of subducted oceanic slabs and the melts were contaminated by mantle peridotites during their ascent. In comparison, the HSG granitoid gneisses were generated by the partial melting of the lower continental crust composed mainly of metamorphosed basaltic (garnet amphibolites) and pelitic rocks.
Petrogenesis of Late Neoarchean High-K Granitoids in the Western Shandong Terrane, North China Craton, and Their Implications for Crust-Mantle Interactions

Abstract:Late Neoarchean plutonic rocks in the eastern range of the Western Shandong (WSD) terrane, North China Craton, consist of fine-grained monzogranites (Group #1), fine-grained monzogranitic gneisses (Group #2), coarse-grained granodioritic gneisses (Group #3) and coarse-grained gabbro-diorites (Group #4). The first three groups of granitoids exhibit high SiO2 and K2O contents and plot in the quartz monzonite, granodiorite and granite fields in the TAS classification diagram and the high-K calc-alkaline series field in the SiO2 and K2O diagram. These granitoids show meta- to peraluminous characteristics in the A/NK versus A/CNK plot. In contrast, the gabbro and diorite samples display low SiO2 and K2O contents. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb isotopic dating reveals that the high-K granitoids (Groups #1, 2 and 3) were emplaced at similar to 2511-2497 Ma and that the gabbro-diorites were emplaced at similar to 2511 Ma. All of these samples generally underwent regional metamorphism at similar to 2475-2451 Ma. Detailed petrogenetic and geochemical studies suggest that the fine-grained monzogranites (Group #1) were derived from the hydrous partial melting of juvenile sediments at mid-crustal levels, while the fine-grained monzogranitic gneisses (Group #2) were most likely derived from the partial melting of metagreywackes at lower to mid-crustal levels. The gabbro-diorites (Group #4) were derived from the partial melting of a fluid-metasomatized mantle source at relatively deeper levels of the upper mantle. The granodioritic gneisses (Group #3) were generated from magma mixing between melts derived from the partial melting of metagreywackes similar to 90%) and melts derived from a metasomatized depleted mantle source (similar to 10%) with minor ancient basement material additions. These findings, combined with previously obtained zircon U-Pb dating and Lu-Hf isotope data, suggest that crust-mantle interaction constituted the essential mechanism for the formation of high-K granitoids in the WSD terrane. The upwelling and underplating of mantle-derived magmas (Group #4) not only provided sufficient heat for melting crustal materials at various levels (Group #1 and #2) but also mixed mantle materials with crustal-derived melts, thereby generating the magmatic precursors of the granodioritic gneisses (Group #3).

Here we present an integrated investigation of the lithology, geochronology, and geochemistry of Neoarchean plutonic granitoid gneisses and supracrustal rocks from Xintai to Feixian within the Western Shandong Province (WSP) granite-greenstone belt of the North China Craton (NCC). Six main lithological assemblages are identified within the WSP granite-greenstone belt: (1) The similar to 2.69-2.68 Ga tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) gneisses, which were derived from the partial melting of low-K mafic rocks at lower crust, have low MgO contents (0.68-2.11 wt%) and high (La/Yb)(N) ratios (16.7-92). (2) The similar to 2.53 Ga granodioritic gneisses exhibit a low MgO content (0.87-1.91 wt%) but high K2O content (3.06-4.66 wt%), their magma originated from the partial melting of high-K mafic rocks. (3) The similar to 2.54-2.49 Ga monzogranitic gneisses show the highest SiO2 content (71.67-75.26 wt%), and their magma was formed from the partial melting of metagreywackes. (4) The similar to 2.56-2.52 Ga TTG gneisses also have low MgO content (1.42-1.69 wt%) and relatively low (La/Yb)(N) ratios (17.1-23); their magma was produced by the partial melting of low-K mafic rocks at lower crustal levels. (5) The similar to 2.53-2.52 Ga quartz syenites have the highest alkali content (9.66-11.23 wt%) but relatively low MgO content (0.71-1.50 wt%), and their magma was generated by the partial melting of juvenile basaltic rocks associated with recycled sediments. (6) An similar to 2.73 Ga xenolith of plagioclase amphibolite is characterized by high positive epsilon Hf(t(2)) values from + 5.2 to + 8.8, and fractionated chondrite-normalized REE patterns, indicating it may have been derived from a depleted mantle source enriched either by the addition of melt or by fluid metasomatism. The oxygen fugacity values of the crust-derived Neoarchean granitoid magmas are calculated based on a zircon trace element oxybarometer, the results show that the log (f O-2) values for the similar to 2.7 Ga TTG gneisses that range from FMQ-7.4 to FMQ + 5.5 with an average value of FMQ + 0.5, whereas the various similar to 2.5 Ga granitoid gneisses have log (f O-2) values ranging from FMQ-4.3 to FMQ + 8.9 with an average value of FMQ + 3.3. In conjunction with mineralogical results, we consider that the similar to 2.7 Ga continental crust was in a relatively more reduced state than the similar to 2.5 Ga continental crust in the WSP, which may be associated with differences in their source regions and compositions.

Abstract:Neoarchean granitoid gneisses are widely distributed throughout Eastern Hebei, eastern North China Craton, which are dominated by deformed and metamorphosed tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG), diorite, and granite. This study presents the results of systematic zircon U-Pb geochronological, whole-rock geochemical and Sm-Nd isotopic analyses of the Neoarchean granitoid gneisses in Eastern Hebei. These data provide insights into the Archean-Paleoproterozoic multiple tectonothermal events as well as the petrogenesis of these gneisses. Zircon U-Pb isotopic dating indicate that the granitoid gneisses were contemporaneously emplaced between 2546 +/- 10 and 2510 +/- 10 Ma, reflecting a giant Neoarchean igneous event throughout Eastern Hebei. Subsequently these rocks were subjected to regional amphibolite facies metamorphism at 2.48-2.45 Ga. The close spatial and temporal relationships in terms of magmatism and metamorphism at ca. 2.5 Ga suggest a uniform tectonothermal evolution of Eastern Hebei. The granitic gneisses have mainly originated from the partial melting of juvenile metamorphosed greywackes, with minor involvement of basalts. The large geochemical and isotopic variations within the dioritic and TTG gneisses both provide evidence for the mixing of mafic and felsic magmas, coupled with fractional crystallization. However, the chemical differences between the dioritic and TTG gneisses might result from individual mafic magma sources, viz. basaltic and high-Mg melts. The mafic magma may also form the basalt or komatiite within the greenstone belt or evolve via fractional crystallization prior to the magma mixing. Large-scale granitoid activities were possibly related to mafic magma underplating. The combined geochronological, geochemical, and geological data support an Archean proto-mantle plume model for a geodynamic interpretation of the eastern North China Craton during the Neoarchean.
Neoarchean Magmatic Arc in the Western Liaoning Province, Northern North China Craton: Geochemical and Isotopic Constraints from Sanukitoids and Associated Granitoids

Abstract:The Neoarchean Western Liaoning basement terranes in the northern part of North China Craton chiefly consist of tholeiitic basalts in the north, TTG gneisses and metavolcanic rocks in the northwest, and K-rich granitoids in the southeast. In the southeastern zone, porphyritic monzodioritic-quartz monzodioritic-granodioritic-monzogranitic (MQGM) gneisses are the major lithological assemblage, and locally contain minor xenoliths of TTG gneisses. Based on the major mafic mineral phases, the porphyritic MQGM gneisses can be divided into amphibole-dominated and biotite-dominated groups. Zircon U-Pb isotopic dating indicates that the amphibole-dominated MQGM gneisses, biotite-dominated MQGM gneisses, and tonalitic gneiss xenolith were emplaced during 2546-2529 Ma, 2546-2531 Ma, and at 2563 Ma, respectively. The 2563 Ma tonalitic gneiss xenolith displays geochemical affinities to high-SiO2 adakites, and may be formed by the partial melting of descending oceanic slabs, with the melt contaminated by mantle peridotite. The amphibole-dominated MQGM gneisses are geochemically analogous to sanukitoids, and their magmatic precursors were formed by partial melting of lithospheric mantle, which was metasomatized by dehydration fluids and melts derived from subducted oceanic sediments and slabs. The magmatic precursors of the biotite-dominated MQGM gneisses were generated by the partial melting of medium-K to high-K mafic rocks at medium pressures. Integrated with previous studies on supracrustal sequences and granitoids in Western Liaoning Province, the Neoarchean lithological assemblages in the southeastern zone were most likely formed in an active continental margin setting. New discovery of 3.84−3.64 Ga diverse granitoids in eastern Hebei, North China Craton: Petrogenesis and significance

Abstract:Eoarchean rocks are scarce worldwide, limiting our understanding of Earth’s early history. This contribution presents the field geology, sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb zircon dating, Nd-Hf-O isotopic analysis, and whole-rock geochemical study of Eoarchean granitoids newly discovered in the Labashan area, eastern Hebei, North China Craton. Eoarchean rocks, including 3838−3754 Ma trondhjemitic gneisses (4 samples), 3786−3773 Ma granodioritic gneisses (4 samples), 3775 Ma quartz monzonite gneiss (1 sample), and 3786−3640 Ma potassic granite gneisses (3 samples), are identified in a tract 1 km long. They are in tectonic contact with 3.4−3.1 Ga supracrustal rocks, with both occurring as enclaves in 2.5 Ga potassic granite. The trondhjemitic gneisses show low (La/Yb)N values (23.4−56.8) and insignificant Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.86−1.24). Compared with the trondhjemitic gneisses, the granodioritic gneisses and quartz monzonite gneiss have lower (La/Yb)N ratios (9.2−11.3) and lower Eu/Eu* values (0.62−0.79). The potassic granites have (La/Yb)N ratios of 20.7−55.2 and Eu/Eu* values of 0.75−1.84. Zircon saturation temperatures of the granitoids range from 667 °C to 878 °C. They have whole-rock εNd(t) of −4.6 to 1.0 and tCHUR(Nd) of 4.3−3.6 Ga, and zircon εHf(t) values of −6.9 to 0.4 and tCHUR(Hf) ages of 4.1−3.5 Ga (mainly 4.1−3.8 Ga) and δ18O of 4.6‰−7.5‰ (CHUR—chondritic uniform reservoir). It is speculated that different amounts of low-K mafic rocks and tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite rocks with prior crustal residence times were the source of the spectrum of trondhjemitic to granitic compositions at Labashan. Two possible models, magma underplating and convergent plate boundary processes, are explored for the tectonic regime forming these Eoarchean granitoids.

Abstract:Northeast China is located in the eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) and was influenced by Paleo-Pacific subduction during the Mesozoic. Abundant granitoids from the late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic in NE China record this process, including the Khanka Lake granitoids, which resulted in extensive growth of continental crust in the area. However, the question of how and when the Paleo-Pacific tectonic system began to affect NE China is still highly controversial. The Khanka Lake granitoids can be subdivided into two main components based on their geochemical characteristics, namely granodiorite and syenogranite. The granodiorite has a U–Pb age of 249Ma and is adakite-like (enriched in LREE and LILEs with high Mg#, Sr, La/Yb, Sr/Y and Na2O/K2O), with zircon εHf(t) values of −0.65 to 1.61, produced by the magma mixing between melting of the lower continental crust and juvenile basaltic magma. The syenogranite has zircon U–Pb ages of 209 to 199Ma and geochemical features of highly fractionated I-type granites, with high SiO2, total alkalis and low Mg (and Mg#), Fe, Cr and Ni, and positive zircon εHf(t) of 1.72 to 5.12, indicating an origin from remelting of juvenile crust. The granitoids were intruded by felsic veins between 195 and 184Ma with positive zircon εHf(t) from 0.57 to 5.32. The εHf(t) values of the granitoids become more positive as the zircon U–Pb ages become younger, suggesting continuous melting of juvenile crust during subduction. It is concluded that the Khanka Lake granitoids record the early stage of subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Oceanic plate, which commenced at least ca. 250Ma ago.

Abstract:Diverse late Neoarchean granitoids are widely exposed in the Western Shandong province (WSP). According to geological relationships, lithological features, magmatic zircon U-Pb-Lu-Hf isotopes and whole-rock chemical characteristics, eight main lithological assemblages are identified, and their petrogenesis is determined. (1) The similar to 2.54 Ga and similar to 2.51 Ga potassic granites show the highest SiO2 contents (67.06-75.84 wt%) and were sourced from partial melting of metamorphic greywackes. (2) The similar to 2.53 Ga quartz syenites exhibit the highest alkali contents (10.32-11.23 wt%) and were sourced from mantle-derived basaltic rocks and recycled sediments. (3) The similar to 2.53-2.52 Ga quartz diorites (less-differentiated sanukitoids) formed from partial melting of metasomatized mantle. (4) The similar to 2.53 Ga hornblendites have crystallization ages and Lu-Hf isotopes similar to those of the quartz diorites, implying that they are cogenetic cumulates from the quartz dioritic magmas. (5) The similar to 2.56-2.52 Ga tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) gneisses were formed by melting of thickened crust. (6) The similar to 2.53 Ga high-Mg granodiorites (differentiated sanukitoids) were formed by mixing of crust-mantle melts. (7) The similar to 2.51-2.49 Ga gabbros originated from partial melting of fluid-metasomatized mantle. (8) The similar to 2.54-2.53 Ga high-Mg andesites (boninites) originated from partial melting of refractory mantle that experienced the extraction of basaltic magma at earlier stage and was then enriched in LILEs and LREEs by slab-derived melts. Integrating the petrogenesis of these late Neoarchean diversified granitoids and associated volcanic rocks, we consider that the late Neoarchean was a crucial period of crust-mantle interaction in the WSP, and partial melting of the metasomatized mantle produced intermediate-mafic melts, then underplating of the mantle-derived magmas caused the partial melting of crustal materials, further led to the mixing of crust-mantle magmas. The above complex crust-mantle interactions triggered the transfer of energy and materials from the Earth's interior to the surface, forming modern-like continental crust thickness and geothermal gradient. Moreover, combining late Neoarchean intense granitic magmatism and similar to 2.49 Ga mafic dike swarms implies that the North China Craton experienced cratonization processes at the end of the Neoarchean.

Abstract:The appearance of voluminous K-rich granitoids within nearly all ancient cratons represents one major characteristic of late Archean Earth, which hold the key to understand the transitional geodynamic regimes globally during this period. The genetic regimes and links among different K-rich granitoids and their implications for crustal growth and evolution remain controversial. A series of late Neoarchean K-rich granitoids, including quartz dioritic, granodioritic, and monzogranitic gneisses, occur in the Jiaobei terrane of North China Craton. Zircon U-Pb isotopic data reveal that they emplaced during similar to 2544-2494 Ma, coeval with regional similar to 2530-2470 Ma high-grade metamorphism. The quartz dioritic-granodioritic gneisses are magnesian rocks, and they show low Si and Ti, but high K and Mg, similar to Archean low-Ti sanukitoids. The Sr/Y and (La/Yb)(N) are high (mostly 59.99-119.32 and 8.56-61.42), with moderate to high Nb (up to 11.79 ppm). Geochemical modeling, combined with depleted zircon epsilon Hf(t(2)) (+0.5 - +7.2) and the presence of minor xenocrystic zircons, indicate that these low silica samples were derived from a metasomatized depleted mantle source with inputs of slab-derived fluids and melts, and minor contamination by ancient crustal materials. The monzogranitic rocks are ferroan rocks showing high Si, K, and Fe, but low Mg. They are divided into two subgroups: the first displays low TREE of 44.00-127.00 ppm and positive Eu anomalies (Eu-N/Eu*(N) = 1.06-1.60), whereas the second shows high TREE of 85.76-819.02 ppm but negative Eu anomalies (Eu-N/Eu*(N) = 0.51-0.62). Geochemical modeling and depleted zircon epsilon Hf(t(2)) of +2.6-+8.4 suggest their formation by partial melting of juvenile crustal sources involving tonalitic and some metasedimentary rocks at diverse crustal levels. Combined with regional geological data, these late Neoarchean K-rich granitoids were generated by coupled melting of metasomatized depleted mantle and dominantly juvenile crustal materials during crustal stabilization. Furthermore, the Jiaobei terrane experienced similar to 2.6-2.5 Ga crustal growth under a subduction-accretion setting. (C) 2020 International Association for Gondwana Research.
