Abstract:The North Wulan terrane forms part of the micro-continental blocks in the early Paleozoic Qilian and North Qaidam orogenic belts in NW China. LA-ICP-MS dating of magmatic zircons from two gray gneisses from this terrane yielded U-Pb ages of 1519 +/- 5 Ma and 1497 +/- 8 Ma, suggesting emplacement of their precursor magmas at similar to 1.5 Ga. The rocks have high SiO2 (70.6-75.6 wt.%) and Na2O (3.96-4.84 wt.%), but relatively low Al2O3 (mostly <15 wt.%) and K2O (0.90-2.52 wt.%) contents. They possess low contents of Ni, Cr, Sc, Sr, Rb and moderate Y, with slightly enriched LREE ((La/Yb)(N) = 3.46-11.3) and flat HREE ((Gd/ Yb)(N) = 0.95-2.06) patterns and strongly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*- 0.22-0.38). Thus, these rocks have trondhjemite compositions and are comparable to the low-Al or low-pressure TTG gneisses worldwide. Zircons from these rocks yielded epsilon Hf(t) and T-DM2 values of -2.2-5.1 and 1.93-2.39 Ga, respectively. Our data suggest that the precursor low-Al trondhjemite magma was generated from partial melting of the early Paleoproterozoic mafic rocks at shallow crust level through possible heat input from upwelling mantle in a continental rifting setting. We suggest that these similar to 1.5 Ga gneissic rocks were formed in a tectonic setting identical to that of coeval mafic sills and dykes in the northern Tarim Craton and western Yangtze Craton, and can be broadly correlated with the anorogenic magmatism associated with the initial fragmentation of the supercontinent Columbia. Abstract:An early Paleozoic eclogite belt extends discontinuously for 500 km in the East Kunlun Orogen, northwestern China, which provides insight into the evolution of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. However, the nature and age of the eclogite protoliths and subsequent metamorphism are unclear. Here, we report mineral chemical, zircon, and titanite geochronological; whole -rock major and trace elemental; and Sr-Nd isotopic data for eclogites from the Xiarihamu area in the western East Kunlun Orogen. At a minimum, these eclogites underwent peak eclogite-facies metamorphism at 27-28 kbar and 630-650 degrees C, post -peak decompression, and retrograde amphibolite-facies overprinting. Geochemically, eclogites have characteristics typical of enriched mid -oceanic -ridge basalts and oceanic -island basalts. Inherited magmatic zircon cores yielded a protolith age of 828 Ma, and metamorphic zircons yielded peak and post -peak decompression ages of 443 Ma and 422 Ma, respectively. A titanite U-Pb age of 413 Ma constrains the timing of later amphibolite-facies overprinting. The protoliths of the Xiarihamu eclogites were the products of continental rift -related basaltic magmatism, which was generated during the initial breakup of Rodinia. The protoliths experienced eclogite-facies metamorphism in a continental subduction/collisional setting during the early Paleozoic. The formation of the Xiarihamu eclogites suggests that the Proto-Tethys Ocean had closed by 443 Ma. Given the spatio-temporal relationship between the Xiarihamu magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide deposit and the eclogites studied, the former may have formed in a post-collisional extensional setting. The eclogites and magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide deposit from the Xiarihamu area jointly reveal the evolution of East Kunlun Orogen from Neoproterozoic supercontinent breakup to early Paleozoic tectonic transitions from collisional convergence to post-collisional extension.

Protolith origin of eclogites from the North Qaidam UHP metamorphic Belt, NW China: Implications for the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent

Abstract:The North Qaidam ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt (NQUB) is distinguished by the widespread distribution of eclogites. However, the protolith nature of these eclogites remains controversial. This study reports new zircon LA-ICP-MS U–Pb ages and whole-rock geochemistry as well as Sr–Nd isotopic data on the Yuka and Dulan eclogites in the NQUB. Zircon U–Pb dating results of these eclogites indicate that the protolith and metamorphic ages are 831–809 Ma and 439–433 Ma. Based on distinct geochemical features, the samples can be classified into high-Ti/Y type (Group 1) and low-Ti/Y type (Group 2 and Group 3). The Group 1 eclogite protoliths are geochemically similar to oceanic island basalts (OIB) and likely originated from garnet-spinel peridotite mantle sources. The protoliths of Group 2 eclogites have a similar mantle source to those of the Group 1 protoliths, but experienced a higher degree of fractional crystallization and crustal contamination. The Group 3 eclogites have N-MORB-like affinity, and may be derived from shallower mantle sources in the spinel stability field. The differences in mantle sources of enriched (Group 1 and Group 2) and depleted (Group 3) eclogite protoliths can be ascribed to varying extents of mixing between enriched plume and depleted MORB-type mantle components at various melting depths. Our results suggest that the Neoproterozoic protoliths of eclogites in the NQUB belonged to a part of widespread Neoproterozoic rift-related mafic magmatism in the Altun-Qilian-Kunlun Orogenic Belt. These rocks could be the products of mantle plume activities that caused the breakup of Rodinia. Most Neoproterozoic mafic rocks in the NQUB experienced early Paleozoic HP/UHP metamorphism.

Abstract:The tectonic evolution of the Proto- and Paleo-Tethys oceans had a significant influence on ocean-continent distributions in East Asia in the Phanerozoic, and major implications for continental growth in the region. However, it remains ambiguous when and how the Proto-Tethys Ocean transformed into the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Here we present petrologic, mineralogical, chronological and geochemical data for Early Devonian mafic igneous rocks, located in the East Kunlun Orogen. The mafic igneous rocks include basaltic lavas and diabase dykes, and are tholeiitic in composition. Geochemical and SrNd isotopic data indicate that the basaltic lavas were derived from melting of a spinel-bearing asthenospheric mantle (E-MORB) at normal mantle potential temperatures (1384–1400 °C) with negligible (1–4%) crustal contamination. The diabase dykes probably originated from melting of a spinel-bearing lithospheric mantle metasomatized by subduction-related fluids, with 5–20% crustal contamination, and crystallized at 1100–1135 °C. Both basaltic lavas and diabase dykes have the geochemical characteristics of within-plate basalts. Magmatic zircons from the mafic rocks yield Early Devonian ages (407–403 Ma), postdating the East Kunlun ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism by 19–25 Myr. Comparing our results with the location and timing of the high- and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt, we conclude that the mafic igneous rocks formed in a post-collisional extensional setting. Their generation was associated with both the terminal stages of the Proto-Tethys orogenic belt, (with orogenic collapse promoted by repeated and localized delamination of lithospheric mantle), and early continental rifting related to the evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean to the south. The period of ~426–390 Ma is important for the transition from Proto- to Paleo-Tethys oceans in the East Kunlun Orogen.

Abstract:The East Kunlun–Qaidam Block, situated in the northeastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, preserves numerous geological records associated with the evolution of the Rodinia supercontinent. However, the Precambrian tectonic evolutionary history and continental affinity of the East Kunlun–Qaidam Block have long been controversial. In the present study, the results of zircon U–Pb dating reveal that the precursor rocks of the granitic gneisses from the East Kunlun–Qaidam Block were formed between 935 and 928 Ma. The geochemical and Nd–Hf isotope data of these granitic gneisses, coupled with the fact that they contain Paleo-Mesoproterozoic inherited zircons and Al-rich minerals, reveal that their protoliths are S-type granites formed through the partial melting of the Paleo-Mesoproterozoic sedimentary rocks. Combined with available regional geological data, we suggest that the protoliths of the studied granitic gneisses most likely formed in syn-collisional settings during the amalgamation of Rodinia. The 1.0–0.9 Ga granitic magmatism in the East Kunlun–Qaidam and Qilian areas recorded tectonic conversion from oceanic subduction, continental collision, and post-collision. The detrital zircon ages of the studied Mesoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks in the North Qaidam ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt show a major age population at 1.97–1.72 Ga, and the Yangtze Block might be the dominant sedimentary provenance, contributing a large volume of the exotic detritus. The Mesoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks from the Shaliuhe Group might have been deposited in a passive continental margin environment during the late Mesoproterozoic. The youngest detrital zircon ages (713–618 Ma) from the Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks in the East Kunlun–Qaidam Block suggest that they were most probably formed in the middle–late Neoproterozoic era. Zircons from the Neoproterozoic strata both have a major age cluster of 1.0–0.9 Ga, which were mainly derived from the East Kunlun–Qaidam Block. The Neoproterozoic strata were deposited in a continental rift setting during the breakup of Rodinia. Our study further supports that the East Kunlun–Qaidam Block has a tectonic affinity with the western Yangtze Block from late Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic.

Abstract:Syn- to post-collisional mafic igneous rocks are widely distributed along continental collision orogenic belts and can be used to constrain the nature of the orogenic mantle and relevant chemical geodynamic processes during orogenesis. However, there is uncertainty about the mechanisms of recycling of continental crustal materials in continental subduction channels. We report chronological and geochemical data for syn- and post-collisional mafic dikes from the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB), western China, which provide insights into the processes of geochemical transfer and geodynamic evolution of this fossil orogen. Zircon U-Pb dating of the mafic dikes yields ages of 433 Ma and 409-407 Ma, corresponding to syn- and post-collisional magmatism, respectively. The rocks exhibit typical arc-like trace-element characteristics and weakly enriched Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic compositions, as well as variable zircon O isotopic compositions. These geochemical characteristics are comparable to those of Neoproterozoic paragneiss influenced by Early Paleozoic metamorphism associated with high-ultrahigh-pressure eclogitization in the EKOB and indicate that paragneiss-derived hydrous melts were likely involved in the mantle source of the studied mafic igneous rocks during continental collision. This qualitative interpretation is supported by quantitative modeling of the geochemical transfer in the continental subduction zone. We propose that the syn-collisional mafic igneous rocks were formed during the continental collision between Central Kunlun and South Kunlun Belts, whereas the post-collisional mafic igneous rocks formed in an extensional regime associated with orogenic lithosphere thinning and asthenospheric upwelling.
Neoproterozoic lithospheric extension related to break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent: Constraints from a newly-identified granite porphyry in southeastern Yunnan, China

Abstract:Although the southeastern Yunnan region preserves an important record of the evolution of the South China block (SCB), its Precambrian geology is not well understood due to poor exposure. The newly-discovered Laojunshan granite porphyry (LNGP) is the only Precambrian unmetamorphosed granitoid unit exposed in the southwestern SCB. Here, we present integrated studies of the LNGP including whole-rock major and trace-element geochemistry and Nd isotopes, together with zircon U-Pb chronology and Lu-Hf isotopes by LA-ICP-MS. Zircon U-Pb dating results for two granite porphyry dykes yielded ages of 811.2 ± 7.0 Ma and 830.3 ± 5.2 Ma. The studied samples have high total alkalis (6.46–9.68 wt%), SiO 2 (69.44–75.6 wt%), P 2 O 5 (0.11–0.33 wt%) and Al 2 O 3 (10.44–14.39 wt%) but low CaO (0.09–1.29 wt%) contents; these characteristics together with high Al saturation indices (1.1–1.7), indicate the LNGP is of strongly peraluminous S-type granite affinity. The LNGP is characterized by Rb-Th-U-K enrichments and Ba-Sr-Nb-Ti-Ta depletions, and right-sloping REE patterns with obvious negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.2–0.4). Major and trace elements show good correlations with SiO 2 . Diagrams of Th vs Th/Nd, La vs La/Sm and Zr vs Zr/Sm indicate that fractional crystallization was an important process in the genesis of the LNGP. The Ba vs Eu, Sr vs Eu and Ba vs Sr correlations and high Rb/Sr (8.2–74) and Ca/Sr (12–614) ratios demonstrate that magmatic evolution involved extensive fractionation of plagioclase and K-feldspar. The initial zircon Hf isotopic composition of the porphyry varies widely (ε Hf (t) = −10.1 to +6.7), with corresponding two-stage Hf model ages of 1291–2331 Ma; whereas whole-rock Nd isotopes are relatively uniform (ε Nd (t) = −5.8 to −4.6), with two-stage Nd model ages of 1886–2130 Ma. The variable zircon Hf isotopic compositions suggest a heterogenous source for the LNGP, containing juvenile components (with higher ε Hf (t) values) and ancient reworked crustal materials (with lower ε Hf (t) values). Geochemical data, including Rb/Sr, Rb/Ba, Al 2 O 3 /(MgO + Fe 2 O 3 T ), CaO/(MgO + Fe 2 O 3 T ) and (Na 2 O + K 2 O)/(Fe 2 O 3 T + MgO + TiO 2 ) ratios and (Na 2 O + K 2 O + Fe 2 O 3 T + MgO + TiO 2 ) content suggests a meta-pelite/greywacke source. Early arc-continent or continent–continent collision may produce mixtures of juvenile sediments formed by erosion of with ancient crustal materials that were strongly folded and deeply buried in the studied area. The LNGP has medium to high magmatic temperatures (761–875 °C) and low oxygen fugacity (ΔFMQ −5.4 to ΔFMQ −2.8). The LNGP was emplaced at middle-upper crustal levels (pressure < 5kbar) in an extensional setting analogous to granitoid associated with the Neoproterozoic age rift-related Nanhua and Kangdian magmatic belts that bound the periphery of the Yangtze block. These belts are interpreted to be the result of the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent during the period 850 to 700 Ma. We similarly interpret the emplacement of the LNGP, which occurred within an extensional setting, to be a response to the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent.

Abstract:The Sanjiang Tethyan Orogen plays a pivotal role in elucidating the geodynamic processes related to the evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Research on the Gicha Complex within this orogen is imperative for comprehending the intricate evolution of the region. This study presents new findings from zircon U‒Pb dating, Hf isotope analysis, and whole-rock elemental analyses of gabbro, olivine gabbro, and the recently discovered mylonitic rhyolite and diabase in the Gicha Complex. The zircon U‒Pb dating yields ages of 703 ± 3 Ma for the diabase, 296 ± 2 Ma for the gabbro, and 231 ± 1 and 228 ± 2 Ma for the mylonitic rhyolite, demonstrating that these rocks record the extended evolution from the breakup of Rodinia to the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. The Neoproterozoic diabase samples exhibit shoshonitic and arc-like geochemical properties, with positive zircon ε Hf (t) values ranging from 1.1 to 3.7 and high Th/Yb values ranging from 1.34 to 3.07, suggesting that they were generated by partial melting of enriched subduction-modified lithospheric mantle in an active continental margin. The early Permian gabbro samples are part of the tholeiitic series and exhibit low SiO 2 and K 2 O contents; depletions in Nb, Ta and Ti; and enrichment in Pb, indicating derivation from a combination of depleted mantle peridotite and subduction-related components. The whole-rock geochemical features suggest that these rocks formed in a back-arc setting featuring a small, mature ocean basin. The mylonitic rhyolite samples exhibit weakly peraluminous characteristics (A/CNK = 0.98–1.12) with high-K calc-alkaline geochemical features. The samples are depleted in Ba, Nb, Ta, and Ti and enriched in Th, U, Pb, and LREEs and exhibit negative to positive zircon ε Hf (t) values ranging from − 0.5 to + 5.9, indicating that they originated from partial melting of Meso-Neoproterozoic juvenile lower crust. Geochronological, petrological, and geochemical analyses indicate that the subduction of oceanic crust occurred along the western margin of the Yangtze Block until the late Neoproterozoic (~ 703 Ma).

Origin and evolution of the Neoproterozoic Dengganping Granitic Complex in the western margin of the Yangtze Block, SW China: Implications for breakup of Rodina Supercontinent

Abstract:A better understanding of the origin and evolution of widespread Neoproterozoic granites along the western margin of the Yangtze Block is important in locating the position of South China within the Rodinia Supercontinent, and the mechanism by which the supercontinent was fragmented. Published and our new detailed geochronological and geochemical data from the Dengganping Complex show that it formed during an extended magmatic event during the Neoproterozoic. This was during the emplacement of a fractionated ca. 815 Ma syenogranite, which was followed by partial melting during ca. 740 Ma and the emplacement of a biotite monzogranite. The geochemistry of the syenogranite indicates it is: (1) a peraluminous high-K type of granite; (2) calc-alkaline; (3) fractionated; (4) enriched in Th, U, Zr, Hf and LREE (LREE/HREE values of 5.3–9); (5) depleted in Nb and Sr; (6) has a negative Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.3–0.5); (7) has whole rock εNd(t) value of −0.7 to +0.5; (8) has zircon εHf(t) value of −1.7 to +5.2; and (9) has zircon 18O values ranging from 5.13 to 7.38‰. These characteristics are indicative of a source derived from the partial melting of crustal material. The biotite monzogranite is: (i) peraluminous calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline; (ii) enriched in LREE (LREE/HREE = 9.9–14.6), Rb, Ba, Th and U; (iii) depleted in Nb and Ta; (iv) has weak negative δEu and δCe anomalies; (v) has whole rock εNd(t) value of between −3.2 and − 1.8; has relatively high positive zircon εHf(t) values of +4.1 to +13; and has zircon 18O values ranging from 3.44 to 6.75‰. These features are indicative of partial melting of a juvenile mafic crust that might have experienced a high-temperature water-rock interaction. By comparing the geochronology of Neoproterozoic magmatic rocks along the faulted western margin of the Yangtze Block, it is suggested that the region was part of the Rodinia Supercontinent when it started to breakup during widespread rifting between ca. 825 and 710 Ma. We believe the fault zone formed in response to an opening ocean was induced by the presence of a mantle plume during this period.

Abstract:The protoliths for different types of UHP metamorphic rocks - eclogite, garnet amphibolite, paragneiss and orthogneiss in the south Sulu UHP metamorphic terrane formed under the extensional environment at the passive continental margin composed of continental basaltic rocks, supercruct rocks and granites. Zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating for the south Sulu UHP metamorphic rocks in the CCSD-MH shows 780 ∼ 680Ma ages for the protoliths of granitic gneiss, 765 ∼ 730Ma ages for protoliths of eclogite and garnet amphibolite; as well as 730Ma, 680Ma, 621Ma, and even yonger ages for inherited detrital zircons and magmatic zircons of paragneiss. Aboved-mentioned dating combined with previous data shows that the protoliths of the south Sulu UHP metamorphic rocks had been inferenced by Neoprotorozoic Rodinia supercontinent breakup event represented by granitic and basic magmatisms. The supercruct protolith of paragneiss as volcano-sedimental covers of the Yangtze passive continental margin formed during Neoprotorozoic-Paleozoic. Both of them had experienced UHP metamorphism during 240 ∼ 220Ma.
Discovery and its geological significance of Early Paleozoic edogite in Xiarihamu-Suhaitu area, western part of the East Kunlun

Abstract:Eclogite and the retrograde amphibolitic eclogite, occurred as tectonic lenses, are found in the metamorphic basement, western part of the East Kunlun, based on the results of 1 : 250000 regional geological survey. They are intermittently scattering about 20km along Xiaozaohuo-Suhaitu-Xiaiihamu-Laningzaohuo area. Most of the eclogites are retrograded into amphibolitic eclogites, they consist of the peak metamorphic mineral assemblage (garnet + omphacite + ilmenite + ruffle) and the later stage retrograde mineral assemblage (hornblende ( green) + plagioclase). The edge of the garnet grains develops needle-like hornblende and particulate plagioclase symplectic corona texture, forming white eye rims about 0.15 similar to 1 cm in size. The composition of garnet is Alm(52-53)And(4-2) Spesso(0.7-1.2)Gross(21.7-22)Pyr(19-20), Jadeite molecular in omphacite is 30.14mol% similar to 37.7mol%. Estimation of eclogite-facies metamorphic conditions shows P approximate to 20kbar, T approximate to 660 similar to 700 degrees C, and the amphibolite facies retrograde metamorphic conditions of P approximate to 7kbar, T approximate to 550 degrees C. The rocks had experienced a retrogressive process of significant cooling and decompression. Most of the CL images of zircons from the eclogites show sector zoning or "fir leaves" structure. Th/U ratio ranges in 0.007 similar to 0.09. Zircon U-Pb age (LA-ICP-MS) is 411.1 +/- 1.9Ma (n = 17), which represents the peak metamorphism age of eclogite-facies. Combined with the analysis of regional metamorphic and magmatic events, the peak stage of the high-pressure metamorphism is determined to be Late Silurian-Early Devonian, which is probably associated with a massive continent-continent collision event. The discovery is significant for the tectonic study of the Kunlun orogenic belt.
